We present a case of an 82-year-old female with a painless left latero-cervical swelling, which increased in size over the course of 6 months, compressing adjacent organs. The histopathological examination, following dissection of the left thyroid lobe and ipsilateral cervical lymph nodes, yielded two intermingled morphologically distinct histotypes that included conventional papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with cystic features. The clinical presentation, the immunophenotype, and the genotype, especially of the malignant squamous component with partial expression of TTF1, marked expression of p63 and mutation of BRAF, were consistent with the diagnosis of a papillary thyroid carcinoma with squamous component. The possibility of a squamous cell carcinoma of unknown origin metastasizing to a primary papillary thyroid carcinoma cannot be completely ruled out. This particular presentation of thyroid carcinoma carries a poor prognosis in 20% of cases, with high recurrence rates and distant metastasis.

This qualitative study analyzed, from the teacher’s perspective, if the principle of comprehensiveness is included in child healthcare teaching in nursing education. The participants were 16 teachers involved in teaching child healthcare in eight undergraduate nursing programs. Data collection was performed through interviews that were submitted to thematic content analysis. The theory in teaching incorporates comprehensive care, as it is based on children’s epidemiological profile, child healthcare policies and programs, and included interventions for the promotion/prevention/rehabilitation in primary health care, hospitals, daycare centers and preschools. The comprehensive conception of health-disease process allows for understanding the child within his/her family and community. However, a contradiction exists between what is proposed and what is practiced, because the teaching is fragmented, without any integration among disciplines, with theory dissociated from practice, and isolated practical teaching that compromises the incorporation of the principle of comprehensiveness in child healthcare teaching.

A investigação “Do Jardim-de-infância ao Centro de Actividades de Tempos Livres: Representações das Crianças sobre o Brincar” reconhece as crianças como actores sociais, sujeitos de direitos, entre eles, o direito à participação em assuntos que lhes digam directamente respeito, a assuntos de seu interesse, nomeadamente o direito ao brincar. O brincar é uma actividade lúdica, assim como o jogar, importante no processo de crescimento e desenvolvimento da criança e, nos tempos que correm, a sociedade, de uma forma geral, e particularmente as famílias, preocupam-se muito com o trabalho e colocam as necessidades básicas das crianças em segundo plano ao valorizarem acima de tudo o sucesso e o desempenho das mesmas. Assim, se participar significa “tomar parte em”, reconhece-se a necessidade de ouvir as crianças e o que elas têm a dizer sobre essa actividade lúdica, sobre a forma como organizam o seu dia e o tempo que despendem para brincar e sobre a forma como gostariam de ver os seus dias ocupados. É neste pressuposto, de que é através da acção e da voz das crianças, que é possível a construção de um conhecimento teórico e válido que contribua para uma melhor intervenção educativa com as crianças. Esta investigação, que decorreu numa instituição com várias vertentes, entre elas a vertente da Animação Infantil, enquadra-se no paradigma qualitativo de natureza participativa, e procura interpretar os significados atribuídos pelas crianças, que frequentam o Jardim-deinfância da rede pública e a mesma instituição, na condição de Componente de Apoio à Família, ao brincar, às suas vivências no que concerne à gestão do seu quotidiano, quer no que refere ao tempo que passam no Jardim-de-infância, quer no que passam no Prolongamento de Horário/Actividades de Tempos Livres. Neste trabalho de investigação que decorreu numa instituição situada numa freguesia pertencente ao Distrito de Viana do Castelo e que disponibiliza os serviços de ATL, participaram como protagonistas as crianças da faixa etária entre os três e os seis anos de idade e que frequentam dois contextos: educacional e lúdico. Este trabalho é sustentado por um referencial teórico que engloba o brincar na sociedade actual e a sua importância, a educação pré-escolar e as suas funções, a natureza da componente de apoio à família, a animação sócio-educativa e os contextos de vida das crianças, que permitiram questionar a participação infantil em assuntos de seu interesse. Ainda que este estudo não permita generalizações, reflecte-se sobre a realidade existente, dá voz às crianças e indica aspectos que, de uma forma geral, precisam de mais atenção. Afinal o brincar na infância é um assunto sério…

Historically, alcohol is the most prevalent substance of use and abuse by adults in Iowa. Research from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System compiled by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that almost six of every ten adult Iowans are classified as current drinkers of alcoholic beverages. Further, one in five adult Iowans is classified as a binge drinker of alcoholic beverages, a classification indicative of abuse of, or addiction to, the substance.

This report presents the results of a number of detailed Iowa access management case studies. Case studies were selected to provide a cross-section of locations and community sizes in Iowa as well as a variety of project types. Generally, access management projects completed during the mid-1990s were chosen as case studies. Projects ranging from driveway consolidation to full raised medians were analyzed on a before and after basis in terms of traffic safety, traffic operations, and adjacent business vitality. Sources of information used for the case study analysis included: road project files; traffic accident records; state sales tax records; and personal interviews of business owners, business customers, and local officials. The case study results from Iowa essentially confirm results of previous access management research from around the nation. Recent access in Iowa had significant, positive impacts in terms of traffic safety. The average reduction of annual accidents and accident rates on improved roadways was approximately 40%. Improvements in access management also led to significantly better roadway operations for most case studies. Although a small number of individual businesses do report sales losses and/or customer complaints once projects have been completed, access management projects in Iowa have not had an adverse impact on the majority of businesses located along them. In fact, some access management projects in Iowa seem to have contributed to an improved business environment along the corridors that have been improved. The results from the Iowa case studies presented in this report will be used to develop access management education materials for Iowa transportation professionals and other audiences interested in the impacts of access management.

Individuals with depression process information in an overly negative or biased way (e.g., Henriques & Leitenberg, 2002) and demonstrate significant interpersonal dysfunction (e.g., Zlotnick, Kohn, Keitner, & Della Grotta, 2000). This study examined the relationship between cognitive errors (CEs) and interpersonal interactions in early psychotherapy sessions of 25 female patients with major depression. Transcripts were rated for CEs using the Cognitive Error Rating Scale (Drapeau, Perry, & Dunkley, 2008). Interpersonal patterns were assessed using the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (Benjamin, 1974). Significant associations were found between CEs and markers of interpersonal functioning in selected contexts. The implications of these findings in bridging the gap between research and practice, enhancing treatment outcome, and improving therapist training are discussed. Aquest treball és una recerca entorn la necessitat de repensar i repracticar l‟educació des de l‟idea de xarxa. Està estructurat en tres grans blocs: un primer, on es justifica des de l‟àmbit personal, educatiu i científic el per què de la tria de la nostra recerca i on es planteja la pregunta inicial des de la qual es desenvoluparà tot el treball: En quina situació es troba el treball educatiu en xarxa en les escoles Pereanton, Camí del mig, Guillem de Mont-rodon i Artur Martorell?. Un segon, centrat en la fonamentació conceptual del que els referents teòrics han dit sobre el tema. I un tercer, de caire més pràctic, on per una banda s‟exposa el paradigma, la orientació metodològica i les eines de recollida de dades utilitzades en l‟estudi de camp . I per altra, s‟analitzen les informacions obtingudes amb l‟objectiu de determinar quin és el grau d‟aplicació de treball en xarxa a cada un dels centres estudiats. Finalment la recerca es tanca amb les conclusions pràctiques fruit del contrast entre el marc teòric i el resultat pràctic obtingut de l‟anàlisi de la visita als centres.

Advancements in high-throughput technologies to measure increasingly complex biological phenomena at the genomic level are rapidly changing the face of biological research from the single-gene single-protein experimental approach to studying the behavior of a gene in the context of the entire genome (and proteome). This shift in research methodologies has resulted in a new field of network biology that deals with modeling cellular behavior in terms of network structures such as signaling pathways and gene regulatory networks. In these networks, different biological entities such as genes, proteins, and metabolites interact with each other, giving rise to a dynamical system. Even though there exists a mature field of dynamical systems theory to model such network structures, some technical challenges are unique to biology such as the inability to measure precise kinetic information on gene-gene or gene-protein interactions and the need to model increasingly large networks comprising thousands of nodes. These challenges have renewed interest in developing new computational techniques for modeling complex biological systems. This chapter presents a modeling framework based on Boolean algebra and finite-state machines that are reminiscent of the approach used for digital circuit synthesis and simulation in the field of very-large-scale integration (VLSI). The proposed formalism enables a common mathematical framework to develop computational techniques for modeling different aspects of the regulatory networks such as steady-state behavior, stochasticity, and gene perturbation experiments.

This article presents preliminary research from an instructional design perspective on the design of the case method as an integral part of pedagogy and technology. Key features and benefitsusing this teaching and learning strategy in a Virtual Teaching and Learning Environment(VTLE) are identified, taking into account the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) for a competence-based curricula design. The implications of these findings for alearning object approach exploring the possibilities of learning personalization, reusability and interoperability trough IMS LD, are also analyzed.

Aim of this contribution is to illustrate the state of the art of smart antenna research from several perspectives. The bow is drawn from transmitter issues via channel measurements and modeling, receiver signal processing, network aspects, technological challenges towards first smart antenna applications and current status of standardization. Moreover, some future prospects of different disciplines in smart antenna research are given.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää paikallisten metsäteollisuuteen toimittavien pienten ja keskisuurten ohjelmistoyritysten nykytilannetta, hyviä käytäntöjä ja toiminnan ongelmia. Tunnistamalla pienten ja keskisuurten ohjelmistoyritysten nykytilanne on mahdollista suunnitella konkreettisia yrityksille suunnattavia kehittämistoimenpiteitä. Työssä on keskitytty tutkimaan metsäteollisuuteen toimittavia kaakkoissuomaisia pieniä ja keskisuuria ohjelmistoyrityksiä. Työn viitekehyksenä esitellään metsäteollisuuden nykytilannetta, kehitystrendejä sekä kehitystrendien vaikutusta metsäteollisuusyritysten tietojärjestelmätarpeisiin. Lisäksi työn viitekehyksessä esitellään tutkimuksessa käytetyt kvalitatiiviset tutkimusmenetelmät.Tutkimus on luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen ja tutkimusotteeltaan deskriptiivinen eli kuvaileva. Tutkimusaineisto koostui 19 asiantuntijahaastattelusta ja dokumenttiaineistosta. Tutkimusaineiston analysoinnissa käytin aineistopohjaista meneelmää ja tapaustutkimusta. Tutkimustulosten perusteella pystyttiinkuvaamaan tutkimuksessa mukana olleille 10 paikalliselle pienelle ja keskisuurelle ohjelmistoyritykselle yhteisiä ominaisuuksia. Tämän lisäksi pystyttiin tunnistamaan ohjelmistoyrityksistä kolme erilaista tyyppiä ja luonnehtimaan kunkin tyypin nykytilannetta, hyviä käytäntöjä ja toiminnan ongelmia. Tunnistetut paikallisten pienten ja keskisuurten ohjelmistoyritysten tyypit ovat: erikoistuja, ennakoija ja keräilijä. Tutkimustulokset antavat hyvän lähtökohdan tulevaisuuden kehitystrendien tunnistamisessa ja toiminnankehitystoimenpiteiden suunnittelussa.

In this research from the late medieval period, we want to analyze diferent aspects related to funerary world through Brunissèn d’Alentorn’s will. The document is compared with other wills from Lleida’s area that acquire knowledge to these customs, for instance, the draps d’or’s uses. These were provided of deceased’ heraldry, and were comissioned to cover the tomb. Also, in Lleida’s case, they were used to decorate the ancient cathedral’s presbitery during the main festivities, and the patrons’ wedding bed. Artistic patronage, social prestige, family arms ostentation, pomp and devotion are other aspects that would be emphasized in this tour, just as the private devotions in the chapels and altars that were founded regarding this topic.

Making correct causal claims is important for research and practice. This article explains what causality is, and how it can be established via experimental design. Because experiments are infeasible in many applied settings, researchers often use "observational" methods to estimate causal models. In these situations, it is likely that model estimates are compromised by endogeneity. The article discusses the conditions that engender endogeneity and methods that can eliminate it.

Palautejärjestelmät mahdollistavat tiedon siirron suurissa organisaatioissa toimittajan ja sisäisten asiakkaiden välillä. Kun palaute on saatu kerättyä, on vasta ensimmäinen askel toiminnan kehittämisessä otettu. Keräämisen jälkeen tieto pitää vielä käsitellä, analysoida ja jakaa eteenpäin. Viimeisenä vaiheena tulee ajan kuluttua tarkastaa, onko palautteesta pystytty hyötymään. Palautteen keräysmahdollisuuksia on kahdenlaisia: Ihmisten välinen ja sähköinen tiedonkeruu. Toteutettaessa ihmisten välistä palautteen keräämistä on tutkimusmenetelmä poikkeuksetta kvalitatiivinen. Sähköisesti toteutettavat tiedon hankinnat taas ovat yleensä kvantitatiivisia. Tämä Pro- Gradu keskittyy valaisemaan asioita, jotka liittyvät palautejärjestelmiin kvalitatiivisen tutkimuksen kautta. Läpi tutkielman mukana kulkevat myös tiiviisti palautteen keräämiseen tukevasti nivoutuvat laatujohtaminen, prosessijohtaminen sekä asiakastyytyväisyys.
