Does it pay to be socially responsible? Evidence from spanish retail banking sector

This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of strategic competition in retail banking when some of the financial firms are non-profit organisations that invest in social activities. Banking literature about competition is fairly large, but the strategic interaction between profit maximizing and non profit maximizers has not been extensively analysed except for Purroy and Salas (1999). In this paper, a completely different approach is taken. An adaptation of Hotelling’s two stage model of spatial competition is developed to take into account consumer perceptions respect to the two different types of financial institutions. The empirical analysis confirms that consumers take into account other features different from the price, such as social contribution or closer service to make a deposit or mortgage decision. The proliferation of Web-based learning objects makes finding and evaluating online resources problematic. While established Learning Analytics methods use Web interaction to evaluate learner engagement, there is uncertainty regarding the appropriateness of these measures. In this paper we propose a method for evaluating pedagogical activity in Web-based comments using a pedagogical framework, and present a preliminary study that assigns a Pedagogical Value (PV) to comments. This has value as it categorises discussion in terms of pedagogical activity rather than Web interaction. Results show that PV is distinct from typical interactional measures; there are negative or insignificant correlations with established Learning Analytics methods, but strong correlations with relevant linguistic indicators of learning, suggesting that the use of pedagogical frameworks may produce more accurate indicators than interaction analysis, and that linguistic rather than interaction analysis has the potential to automatically identify learning behaviour.

El proyecto arranca de una idea central que consiste en programar todas las clases de inglés que correspondan a los dos ciclos de la ESO, partiendo de dos realidades culturales, como son: -la isla en la que vive el alumno con sus implicaciones en la región 'I shall show you my island'. -El lugar donde se habla la lengua, objeto de aprendizaje (inglés) 'You will show me your country'. El grupo de trabajo está compuesto por 19 docentes tanto de EGB como de bachillerato, y pertenecen a la isla de La Palma todos ellos. El objetivo general que se propone es lograr desarrollar las capacidades de los alumnos en los ámbitos cognitivos, afectivos y sociales tomando como base para su logro las vivencias que el medio en que se desarrollan les son consustanciales con su propia vida. Desde un principio se propuso llevar a cabo una unidad didáctica conectada al 'proyecto general', de tal manera que fuese coherente y siguiese una línea general y espiral con el resto de las once unidades restantes que forman en su conjunto todo el proyecto de enseñanza de la ESO. La unidad didáctica como un 'todo' organizado no se ha llevado a la práctica este curso, sin embargo a medida que se iba elaborando material, se iba investigando en el aula. Además de la aportación de la asesora de inglés, este trabajo se ha apoyado en: libros de texto, revistas pedagógicas, material de reprografía, medios informáticos, etc. En cuanto a la valoración del proyecto ha sido muy positiva tanto por el propio grupo de trabajo como por el público asistente a las Jornadas de Innovación celebradas en La Palma y donde pudo presentarse la experiencia..

"Tell me who you hang out with": Classroom peer effects on psychoactive substances consumption

I look for classroom peer effects for psychoactive substance consumption among Colombian high school students and attempt to identify channels that rationalize for these effects. To do so, I use data for Colombian schools from 2011. I identify peer effects using household consumption behavior to instrument average classroom consumption. I find that an increase of 10% in the proportion of classroom users of alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine increases the probability of students to use alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine in 3.14%, 4.29%, and 2.38% respectively. I find no significant effect on cigarette smoking for the full sample but after exploring heterogeneous effects I find suggestive evidence that the effect is positive in some grades. I find some evidence that indicate that peer effects on alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine consumption operate through risk perception and easiness of access to psychoactive substances, meaning that the increase of likelihood of consumption could be explained because it is easier to access to drugs for students that interact with consumers or because a decrease in the risk students perceive of consuming these substances. Finally, through the use of a SUR and a 3SLS estimator I find strong correlations between smoking cigarettes and consuming cannabis (55 %), and cocaine (60 %).

Esta investigación se centra en la Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) como organización política. Intenta responder dos interrogantes primordiales: 1) ¿cómo la FIFA ha constituido el poder que tiene actualmente y, así, hacerse del monopolio indiscutido del fútbol? Y 2) ¿cómo ha cambiado en el tiempo la política interna de FIFA y su vínculo con la política internacional? Para lograr esto, se realiza un estudio histórico, basado principalmente en documentos, que intenta caracterizar y analizar los cambios de la organización en el tiempo. Se enfatizan las últimas dos presidencias de FIFA, de João Havelange y Joseph Blatter, como casos de estudio.
