The aim of this work is to propose a flow spectrophotometric procedure for manganese determination in steel based on electrochemical oxidation of Mn(II) to Mn(VII) at a Pt electrode surface by means of the catalytic effect of Ag(I). The on-line oxidation step was obtained by injecting sample and electrolyte solution directly into an electrolytic cell. After electrolysis, the injectate was homogenized by bubbling air. The permanganate ions produced were passed through the spectrophotometer where absorbance was monitored at 545 nm. Effects of direct current, silver concentration, timing, flow rates, concentration and composition of support electrolyte were investigated. Direct current and silver content manifested themselves as the most relevant parameters. For determination of manganese in the 5.00 - 150 mg L -1 range (r=0,9998) and 60 s electrolysis time, the sample throughput was 20 h -1. Accuracy was assessed by analyzing ten steel standard reference materials. Results are precise (R.S.D. <3%) and in agreement with certified values of reference materials and with standard methods at 95% confidence level.

This experiment was developed in order to evaluation the efficiency of pheromone to control the pink bollworm and the total time of its release in cotton field. The experiment was installed in field conditions, in Chapadao do Sul/SP/Brazil, from January to April, 1998. The treatments consisted of 2 areas, being one of 30ha, where it was applied the pheromone and another of 10ha that was chosen as control area and did not receive pheromone. In the treated area, the laboratory synthesized sex pheromone (PB-Rope) was used thought of dispensers that allowed the slow and gradual release of the active substance. A total of 250 dispenser per hectare were evenly hand distributed in the area. The dispensers were wrapped around the plants. Both areas (treated area and untreated area) were monitored by delta trap. For evaluation of the boll damage, the treatment area was divided into 4 sub-areas. Twenty five green bolls were collected at random from each sub-area at 48 and 65 days after pheromone treatment. Bolls were cracked open by hand, and number of the bolls with symptoms of pink bollworm attacks was recorded. For evaluation of the productivity four areas were demarcated in each treatment, where all fibers and seeds harvested were weighted. Release rate of pheromone from dispenser was evaluated through of the weigh of the dispensers. Were marked and weighed in analytic scale, 20 dispensers contend the pheromone, being placed 10 dispensers under the cotton plants in treated area and other 10 dispensers in an open area. To every 15 days the dispensers were retired and weighed in analytic scale and soon after put back in the field in the same places. The results showed that only one application of mating disrupt pheromone, used in a dosage of 250 dispenser/ha, reached 80% of control for pink bollworm. the release period of pheromone from dispenser, after the application, was 120 days.

The application of on-line C30-reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is described for the analysis of tetraglycosylated flavonoids in aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves of Maytenus aquifolium (Celastraceae). Triacontyl stationary phases showed adequate separation for on-line 1H-NMR measurements at 600 MHz and allowed the characterisation of these flavonoids by detection of both aromatic and anomeric proton signals. A rapid and sensitive method was developed to determine trace levels of Cd2+ ions in an aqueous medium by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, using on-line preconcentration in a mini-column packed with 100 mg of 2-aminothiazol modified silica gel (SiAT). The Cd2+ ions were sorbed at pH 5.0. The preconcentrated Cd2+ ions were directly eluted from the column to the spectrometer's nebulizer-burner system using 100 μL of 2 mol L-1 hydrochloric acid. A retention efficiency of over 95% was achieved. The enrichment factor (calculated as the ratio of slopes of the calibration graphs) obtained with preconcentrations in a mini-column packed with SiAT (A = -1.3 × 10-3 + 1.8 × 10-3 [Cd2+]) and without preconcentrations (A = 4 × 10-5 + 3.5 × 10-3[Cd2+]), was 51 and the detection limit calculated was 0.38 μg L-1. The preconcentration procedure was applied to determine trace levels of Cd in river water samples. The optimum preconcentration conditions are discussed herein.

In last decades, control of nonlinear dynamic systems became an important and interesting problem studied by many authors, what results the appearance of lots of works about this subject in the scientific literature. In this paper, an Atomic Force Microscope micro cantilever operating in tapping mode was modeled, and its behavior was studied using bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, time history, Poincare maps and Lyapunov exponents. Chaos was detected in an interval of time; those phenomena undermine the achievement of accurate images by the sample surface. In the mathematical model, periodic and chaotic motion was obtained by changing parameters. To control the chaotic behavior of the system were implemented two control techniques. The SDRE control (State Dependent Riccati Equation) and Time-delayed feedback control. Simulation results show the feasibility of the bothmethods, for chaos control of an AFM system. This paper proposes a new switched control design method for some classes of linear time-invariant systems with polytopic uncertainties. This method uses a quadratic Lyapunov function to design the feedback controller gains based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The controller gain is chosen by a switching law that returns the smallest value of the time derivative of the Lyapunov function. The proposed methodology offers less conservative alternative than the well-known controller for uncertain systems with only one state feedback gain. This paper describes the application of a technique, known as synchrophasing, to the control of machinery vibration. It is applicable to machinery installations, in which several synchronous machines, such as those driven by electrical motors, are fitted to an isolated common structure known as a machinery raft. To reduce the vibration transmitted to the host structure to which the machinery raft is attached, the phase of the electrical supply to the motors is adjusted so that the net transmitted force to the host structure is minimised. It is shown that while this is relatively simple for an installation consisting of two machines, it is more complicated for installations in which there are more than two machines, because of the interaction between the forces generated by each machine. The development of a synchrophasing scheme, which has been applied to propeller aircraft, and is known as Propeller Signature Theory (PST) is discussed. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally, that this is an efficient way of controlling the phase of multiple machines. It is also shown that synchrophasing is a worthwhile vibration control technique, which has the potential to suppress vibration transmitted to the host structure by up to 20 dB at certain frequencies. Although the principle of synchronisation has been demonstrated on a one-dimensional structure, it is believed that this captures the key features of the approach. However, it should be realised that the mode-shapes of a machinery raft may be more complex than that of a one-dimensional structure and this may need to be taken into account in a real application. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
