High intensity ultrasound can be used for the production of novel nanomaterials, including metal oxides. According to previous works in this field, the most notable effects are consequence of acoustic cavitation. In this context, we have studied the preparation of different materials in the presence of ultrasound, including N-doped TiO2 nanopowder, NiTiO3 nanorods and MnOx thin films. Ultrasound did not show a significant effect in all the cases. Exclusively for NiTiO3 nanorods a reduction of the final particle size occurs upon ultrasonic irradiation. From these results, it can be concluded that the ultrasound irradiation does not always play a key role during the synthesis of metal oxides. The effects seem to be particularly relevant in those cases where mass transport is highly hindered and in those procedures that require the rupture of nanoparticle aggregates to obtain a homogenous dispersion.

Quantum-confined systems are one of the most promising ways to enable us to control a material's interactions with light. Nanorods in particular offer the right dimensions for exploring and manipulating the terahertz region of the spectrum. In this thesis, we model excitons confined inside a nanorod using the envelope function approximation. A region-matching transfer matrix method allows us to simulate excitonic states inside arbitrary heterostructures grown along the length of the rod. We apply the method to colloidal CdSe rods 70 nm in length and under 10 nm in diameter, capped with ligands of DDPA and pyridine. We extend past studies on these types of rods by taking into account their dielectric permittivity mismatch. Compared to previous calculations and experimentally measured terahertz absorption, we predict a higher energy main 1S$z$ to 2P$z$ transition peak. This indicates that the rods are likely larger in diameter than previously thought. We also investigate a nanorod with GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As coupled double dots. The excitonic transitions were found to be manipulable by varying the strength of an applied electric field. We employ quasi-static state population distributions to simulate the effects of exciton relaxation from optically active states to dim ground states. A critical value of the applied field, corresponding to the exciton binding energy of ~18 meV, was found to dramatically alter the terahertz absorption due to state mixing. Above this critical field, more nuanced shifts in transition energies were observed, and gain from radiative relaxation to the ground state is predicted.

High purity one-dimensional ZnO nanobelts were synthesized by thermally evaporating commercial ZnS powders in a hydrogen-oxygen mixture gas at 1050 degrees C. It was found that these ZnO nanobelts had a single crystal hexagonal wurtzite structure growing along the [0001] direction. They had a rectangle-shaped cross-section with typical widths of 20 to 100 nanometers and lengths of up to hundreds of micrometers with lattice constants of a = 0.325 nm and c = 0.520 nm. The self-catalytic hydrogen-oxygen assisted growth of ZnO nanobelt is discussed. The photoluminescence (PL) characterization of the ZnO nanobelts shows strong near-band UV emission (about 383 nm) and one broad peak at 501 nm, which indicates that the ZnO nanobelts have good potential application in optoelectronic devices.

A thermal evaporation method developed in the research group enables to grow and design several morphologies of semiconducting oxide nanostructures, such as Ga_2O_3, GeO_2 or Sb_2O_3, among others, and some ternary oxide compounds (ZnGa_2O_4, Zn_2GeO_4). In order to tailor physical properties, a successful doping of these nanostructures is required. However, for nanostructured materials, doping may affect not only their physical properties, but also their morphology during the thermal growth process. In this paper, we will show some examples of how the addition of impurities may result into the formation of complex structures, or changes in the structural phase of the material. In particular, we will consider the addition of Sn and Cr impurities into the precursors used to grow Ga_2O_3, Zn_2GeO_4 and Sb_2O_3 nanowires, nanorods or complex nanostructures, such as crossing wires or hierarchical structures. Structural and optical properties were assessed by electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), confocal microscopy, spatially resolved cathodoluminescence (CL), photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopies. The growth mechanisms, the luminescence bands and the optical confinement in the obtained oxide nanostructures will be discussed. In particular, some of these nanostructures have been found to be of interest as optical microcavities. These nanomaterials may have applications in optical sensing and energy devices.

Plasmonic resonant cavities are capable of confining light at the nanoscale, resulting in both enhanced local electromagnetic fields and lower mode volumes. However, conventional plasmonic resonant cavities possess large Ohmic losses at metal-dielectric interfaces. Plasmonic near-field coupling plays a key role in a design of photonic components based on the resonant cavities because of the possibility to reduce losses. Here, we study the plasmonic near-field coupling in the silver nanorod metamaterials treated as resonant nanostructured optical cavities. Reflectance measurements reveal the existence of multiple resonance modes of the nanorod metamaterials, which is consistent with our theoretical analysis. Furthermore, our numerical simulations show that the electric field at the longitudinal resonances forms standing waves in the nanocavities due to the near-field coupling between the adjacent nanorods, and a new hybrid mode emerges due to a coupling between nanorods and a gold-film substrate. We demonstrate that this coupling can be controlled by changing the gap between the silver nanorod array and gold substrate.

We report the comparative structural-vibrational study of nanostructures of nanourchins, nanotubes, and nanorods of vanadium oxide. The tube walls comprise layers of vanadium oxide with the organic surfactant intercalated between atomic layers. Both Raman scattering and infrared spectroscopies showed that the structure of nanourchins, nanotubes, and nanorods of vanadium oxide nanocomposite are strongly dependent on the valency of the vanadium, its associated interactions with the organic surfactant template, and on the packing mechanism and arrangement of the surfactant between vanadate layers. Accurate assignment of the vibrational modes to the V-O coordinations has allowed their comparative classification and relation to atomic layer structure. Although all structures are formed from the same precursor, differences in vanadate conformations due to the hydrothermal treatment and surfactant type result in variable degrees of crystalline order in the final nanostructure. The nanotube-containing nanourchins contain vanadate layers in the nanotubes that are in a distorted γ- V5+ conformation, whereas the the nanorods, by comparison, show evidence for V5+ and V4+ species-containing ordered VOx lamina.

Controlling the growth mechanism for nano-structures is one of the most critical topics in material science. In the past 10 years there has been intensive research worldwide in IIIN based nanowires for its many unique photonic and electrical properties at this scale. There are several advantages to nanostructuring III-N materials, including increased light extraction, increased device efficiency, reduction of efficiency droop, and reduction in crystallographic defect density. High defect densities that normally plague III-N materials and reduce the device efficiency are not an issue for nano-structured devices such as LEDs, due to the effective strain relaxation. Additionally regions of the light spectrum such as green and yellow, once found difficult to achieve in bulk planar LEDs, can be produced by manipulating the confinement and crystal facet growth directions of the active regions. A cheap and easily repeatable self-assembly nano-patterning technique at wafer scale was designed during this thesis for top down production of III-N nanowires. Through annealing under ammonia and N2 gas flow, the first reported dislocation defect bending was observed in III-N nanorods by in-situ transmission electron microscopy heating. By growing on these etched top down nanorods as a template, ultra-dense nanowires with apex tipped semi-polar tops were produced. The uniform spacing of 5nm between each wire is the highest reported space-filling factor at 98%. Finally by using these ultra-dense nanorods bridging the green gap of the light spectrum was possible, producing the first reported red, yellow, green light emission from a single nano-tip.

We report a method of growing site controlled InGaN multiple quantum discs (QDs) at uniform wafer scale on coalescence free ultra-high density (>80%) nanorod templates by metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD). The dislocation and coalescence free nature of the GaN space filling nanorod arrays eliminates the well-known emission problems seen in InGaN based visible light sources that these types of crystallographic defects cause. Correlative scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping and cathodoluminescence (CL) hyperspectral imaging illustrates the controlled site selection of the red, yellow and green (RYG) emission at these nano tips. This article reveals that the nanorod tips' broad emission in the RYG visible range is in fact achieved by manipulating the InGaN QD's confinement dimensions, rather than significantly increasing the In%. This article details the easily controlled method of manipulating the QDs dimensions producing high crystal quality InGaN without complicated growth conditions needed for strain relaxation and alloy compositional changes seen for bulk planar GaN templates.

Upconverting nanoparticles have attracted much attention in science recently, specifically in view of medical and biological applications such as live imaging of cell temperatures or cancer treatment. The previously studied system of gadolinium oxide nanorods co-doped with erbium and ytterbium and decorated with different number densities of gold nanoparticles has been studied. So far, these particles have been proven as efficient nanothermometers in a temperature range from 300 up to 2000 K. In this work, a more detailed study on the morphological and radiative behaviour of these particles has been conducted. It was found that the laser power threshold for the onset of the black body radiation decreases strongly with the increase in the gold concentration. The temperature of the onset itself seems to remain approximately constant. The heating efficiency was determined to increase significantly with the gold concentration. The morphological study revealed that the temperature at the black body radiation threshold was not enough to induce any significant transformation in neither the nanorods nor the gold nanoparticles, as was expected from comparison with literature. However, significant changes in radiative properties and the morphology were detected for powders that underwent strong laser heating until the emission of brightly visible black body radiation.

Liquid crystals (LCs) have revolutionized the display and communication technologies. Doping of LCs with inorganic nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes, gold nanoparticles and ferroelectric nanoparticles have garnered the interest of research community as they aid in improving the electro-optic performance. In this thesis, we examine a hybrid nanocomposite comprising of 5CB liquid crystal and block copolymer functionalized barium titanate ferroelectric nanoparticles. This hybrid system exhibits a giant soft-memory effect. Here, spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric nanoparticles couples synergistically with the radially aligned BCP chains to create nanoscopic domains that can be rotated electromechanically and locked in space even after the removal of the applied electric field. The resulting non-volatile memory is several times larger than the non-functionalized sample and provides an insight into the role of non-covalent polymer functionalization. We also present the latest results from the dielectric and spectroscopic study of field assisted alignment of gold nanorods.

Hollow electrospun V2O5 and Au/V2O5 nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by combining emulsion electrospinning (EE) and post calcination treatment. Immiscible polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)/metal salts/dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and polystyrene (PS)/DMF solution are chosen for the EE to form PS PVP/metal salts) core-sheath nanofibers, in which PS nanorods were formed and encapsulated within in the PVP/metal salts nanofibers owing to the stretching forces and de-emulsified force during the electrospinning. Excellent sensitivity and rapid response-recovery behaviors against ethanol have been successfully achieved based on our hollow ceramic (V2O5 and Au/V2O5) nanotubes.
