Surveillance of influenza in Northern Ireland 2012-2013

The 2012/13 influenza season started earlier than in 2011/12; however it lasted longer, with GP consultation rates being elevated for approximately four months. Clinical indices began to increase in late December and peaked in early January, with the only two instances of community syndromic indicators exceeding the baseline threshold occurring in this month. GP influenza-like illness consultation rates in 2012/13 were higher than those in the 2011/12 season for the majority of the season but remained low overall.Overall no one age-group appeared predominantly affected; however, older adults predominated during the peak period, with rates increasing in children during February. Rates for those aged 65 and over increased late in the season, and this was associated with influenza outbreaks in care homes for the elderly.

Commissioning Plan 2013/14

This Commissioning Plan describes the actions that will be taken across health and social care during 2013/14 to ensure continued improvement in the health and wellbeing of the people of Northern Ireland.The plan, developed in partnership by the Health and Social Care Board and the Public Health Agency, responds to the Commissioning Plan Direction published by the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety on the 28 of January 2013. In doing so, it outlines a range of actions that have been developed in partnership with patients and the public which are driven by need, clear goals and budgetary transparency.

Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Team (West) 2012 / 2013 Annual Report

In 2012/13 the Western Health Improvement Team invested over �4 million in a range of initiatives to address health and social wellbeing improvement and target inequalities.The range of initiatives access over 170 projects, which includes a mix of regular commissioning work and innovative development work testing new ideas. Over 250,000 individuals and groups were direct beneficiaries of the programmes; however, previous evaluations have demonstrated that the cascade effect of these initiatives was at least threefold.This comprehensive report outlines the broad range of activities and initiatives that the Western Health Improvement Team has supported during 2012/2013.

Organ donation: Public attitudes and stakeholder engagement in Northern Ireland 2013

In June 2013, a representative sample of the public (n=1,012) responded to a survey about their attitudes towards organ donation. At the same time, a process of stakeholder engagement began, which involved 16 discussion groups with key stakeholders as requested by the Health Minister (including organ donation charities, those on the transplant waiting list, transplant recipients, donor families, and Health and Social Care staff). Discussion groups took place between June and August 2013 and proformas were also completed. The central purpose of this public and stakeholder engagement process was to inform the direction of a public information campaign that will be developed by the Public Health Agency (PHA).The�report highlights the findings from this programme of work.

Patient and Client Experience Annual Report 2012-2013

The Patient and Client Experience Annual Report 2012-13 demonstrates that although healthcare is often highly pressurised, all Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts are ensuring that patient experience remains a priority.The report provides an analysis of the patient and client monitoring including evidence-based statements from patients; highlights areas of good practice within each of the HSC Trusts and outlines areas where further improvements are required to enhance the experience of patients and clients.The comprehensive programme of work undertaken by the six HSC Trusts in conjunction with the HSC Board and PHA to support the implementation of the Patient Client Experience Standards demonstrates a commitment to learn and an assurance to act upon the experience of patients and clients locally and regionally.

Northern Ireland Primary and Secondary Care Opioid Substitute Treatment Guidelines (2013)

The guidelines are intended for all those involved in providing support for drug misusers, especially those providing pharmacological interventions as a component of drug misuse treatment.

HIV surveillance in Northern Ireland 2013 : An analysis of data for the calendar year 2012.

This report aims to provide an overview of HIV epidemiology in Northern Ireland by collating and analysing information from a number of sources. Although it reflects epidemiological trends over time, its main focus will be on data collected in 2012.

Northern Ireland Infectious Disease Incident / Outbreak Plan 2013

The new Northern Ireland Infectious Disease Outbreak Plan 2013 developed by the Public Health Agency in liaison with Trust and DHSSPS colleagues. The Plan is based on the most up-to-date guidance available on leading and managing an incident or outbreak, and was developed as part of the implementation of the RQIA Review of Outbreaks of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Neonatal Units in Northern Ireland, 2012.

GP influenza-like illness consultation rates in 2013/14 were lower than those in the 2012/13 season for the majority of the season and remained low overall.Overall no one age group appeared predominantly affected with rates fluctuating throughout the season. The highest rate overall however was noted among the youngest age group during the peak period.
