The Andalusian Public Health System Virtual Library. Four years on

The Andalusian Public Health System Virtual Library (Biblioteca Virtual del Sistema Sanitario Público de Andalucía, BV-SSPA) set up in June 2006 was determined by the II Quality Plan 2005-2008. It consists of a regional government action with the aim of democratizing the health professional access to quality scientific information, regardless of the professional workplace. Andalusia is a region with more than 8 million inhabitants, with 92,000 health professionals for 41 hospitals, 1,500 primary healthcare centres, and 10 centres for non-medical attention purposes. • To obtain documentary resources for health professionals. • To help citizens to find health information. • To coordinate the Andalusian Health Documentary centres. • To establish strategic agreements with organizations. • To contribute to the Knowledge Management Development • The BV-SSPA acquires in a centralised way, all of the information resources for the whole system. • It offers services for all professionals: o Document Supply Service o Online Learning o User service • Remote access to these resources and services. • Communication and marketing plan to promote the knowledge and use of the BV-SSPA. Presently the BV-SSPA has reached: • The subscription of 2,431 electronic reviews, 8 data bases and other scientific information resources. • The establishment of the Document Supply Service, which focuses all the article orders from and for the Andalusian Public Health System. • The starting up for the online learning platform. • The introduction of the user service and virtual reference service in beta mode. • The use of appropriate tools, as the meta-researcher and the link resolver, which allow the presentation of resources and services in a tidy, easily findable way, through a Web 2.0 page where the user can take part with his contributions and where his offers and suggestion are gathered. • Access to the resources, for the Andalusian Health Professionals worldwide requiring only an internet connection. Andalusian Health Professionals have access to the greatest Health Science Electronic Resources Collection in Spain. The BV-SSPA has become the undisputed medium for the Health Research and Clinical Healthcare in our region, being consolidated as the Knowledge Manager into the Andalusian Public Health System. In 2010, it faces new projects such as the institutional repository creation, HypatiaSalud; the analysis of our research activity; and the drafting of a normalised licence model for the contracting of electronic resources.

Engaging students in an e-learning experience : how to manage information resources through wikis and web blogs

The purpose of this paper is to describe the collaboration between librarians and scholars, from a virtual university, in order to facilitate collaborative learning on how to manage information resources. The personal information behaviour of e-learning students when managing information resources for academic, professional and daily life purposes was studied from 24 semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The results of the content analysis of the interview' transcriptions, highlighted that in the workplace and daily life contexts, competent information behaviour is always linked to a proactive attitude, that is to say, that participants seek for information without some extrinsic reward or avoiding punishment. In the academic context, it was observed a low level of information literacy and it seems to be related with a prevalent uninvolved attitude.

Quality of Web-based information on obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: The Internet is increasingly used as a source of information for mental health issues. The burden of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) may lead persons with diagnosed or undiagnosed OCD, and their relatives, to search for good quality information on the Web. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of Web-based information on English-language sites dealing with OCD and to compare the quality of websites found through a general and a medically specialized search engine. METHODS: Keywords related to OCD were entered into Google and OmniMedicalSearch. Websites were assessed on the basis of accountability, interactivity, readability, and content quality. The "Health on the Net" (HON) quality label and the Brief DISCERN scale score were used as possible content quality indicators. Of the 235 links identified, 53 websites were analyzed. RESULTS: The content quality of the OCD websites examined was relatively good. The use of a specialized search engine did not offer an advantage in finding websites with better content quality. A score ≥16 on the Brief DISCERN scale is associated with better content quality. CONCLUSION: This study shows the acceptability of the content quality of OCD websites. There is no advantage in searching for information with a specialized search engine rather than a general one. Practical implications: The Internet offers a number of high quality OCD websites. It remains critical, however, to have a provider-patient talk about the information found on the Web.

Application development for mobile devices has evolved substantially in recent years. Creating apps for mobile systems is becoming a standard in order to create better solutions to meet the market demand. Currently, half of the US population own Smartphones. This market comprises 150 million people, and 28% of these people consider mobiles their primary way of accessing the Web (Hales, 2013). A common feature of most websites tailored for mobile devices is that they are reduced versions of the desktop site. Several factors that must be considered when making this transition from desktop sites to mobile devices are: identifying elements from the desktop website that should be displayed on the mobile device screen; the amount of information the institution (BSU in this case) wishes to provide and designing an interface that will please the users;

HTPSELEX--a database of high-throughput SELEX libraries for transcription factor binding sites.

HTPSELEX is a public database providing access to primary and derived data from high-throughput SELEX experiments aimed at characterizing the binding specificity of transcription factors. The resource is primarily intended to serve computational biologists interested in building models of transcription factor binding sites from large sets of binding sequences. The guiding principle is to make available all information that is relevant for this purpose. For each experiment, we try to provide accurate information about the protein material used, details of the wet lab protocol, an archive of sequencing trace files, assembled clone sequences (concatemers) and complete sets of in vitro selected protein-binding tags. In addition, we offer in-house derived binding sites models. HTPSELEX also offers reasonably large SELEX libraries obtained with conventional low-throughput protocols. The FTP site contains the trace archives and database flatfiles. The web server offers user-friendly interfaces for viewing individual entries and quality-controlled download of SELEX sequence libraries according to a user-defined sequencing quality threshold. Desenvolvimento Web usando Padrões e Tecnologias Web O caso da FAM-F

Muitos websites são desenvolvidos de uma maneira que, por muitas vezes, fica difícil prestar uma futura manutenção, não encontrando o erro facilmente. Tudo isto deve-se ao facto de esses websites não serem desenvolvidos dentro dos padrões Web. Pensando nisso, o consórcio W3C elaborou uma série de normas e padrões Web que irão auxiliar os desenvolvedores para que sejam desenvolvidos sites com foco na acessibilidade e usabilidade permitindo que utilizadores portadores de alguma necessidade especial, possam usufruir do universo chamada Internet. Desta forma, o presente trabalho possui como objectivo principal entender as principais técnicas para o desenvolvimento de websites e aplicar algumas delas no desenvolvimento do website da FAM-F.

DIGITAL LIBRARY FOR DIGITAL DIVIDE AND ENVIRONMENT OF SCARCE ACCESS TO PRINTED MATERIALS: THE CASE OF UNIVERSITY JEAN PIAGET OF CAPE VERDE

With the failure of the traditional mechanisms of distributing bibliographic materials into developing countries, digital libraries show up as a strong alternative in accomplishing such job, despite the challenges of the digital divide. This paper discusses the challenges of building a digital library (DL) in a developing country. The case of Cape Verde as a digital divide country is analyzed, in terms of current digital library usage and its potentiality for fighting the difficulties in accessing bibliographic resources in the country. The paper also introduces an undergoing project of building a digital library at the University Jean Piaget of Cape Verde.

Segurança nos sites governamentais de Cabo Verde

Nos últimos anos, Cabo verde tem estado a apostar fortemente nas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação, com grande foco na governação electrónica, e conseguintemente na disponibilização de informações e serviços aos cidadãos através de sites, aplicações Web e outros meios. Neste contexto, torna-se necessário que esses websites e aplicações estejam dotados de mecanismos capazes de minimizar os riscos de eventuais cyberataques. Este artigo analisa as principais vulnerabilidades existentes nos sites das instituições do governo de Cabo Verde, e apresenta recomendações sobre as medidas que deverão ser implementadas para minimizar esses problemas.

Del prestatge a la web: la transformació de la formació de les col·leccions a les biblioteques universitàries

L’existència d’una xarxa mundial de comunicacions ubiqua i barata que cada vegada més permet obtenir documents de manera fàcil i gratuïta requerirà una transformació de les pràctiques de la formació de col·leccions a les biblioteques universitàries. Això estarà impulsat per una sèrie d’avenços específics, que inclouen la digitalització de continguts; el desenvolupament de repositoris d’impresos; el desenvolupament de lectors de llibres electrònics i de l’edició mitjançant la impressió sota demanda; el creixement de l’accés obert; els reptes per establir estructures d’edició acadèmica; i el creixement de noves formes d’activitats acadèmiques basades en l’obertura i la productivitat social. Si les biblioteques universitàries volen tenir èxit, hauran de desmuntar les col·leccions impreses patrimonials; passar de la selecció de llibres ítem a ítem a la compra sota demanda i a les subscripcions; gestionar la transició cap a revistes d’accés obert; centrar-se en conservar ítems únics; i desenvolupar nous mecanismes per finançar una infraestructura nacional.
