This review assesses the circumpolar occurrence of emerged marine macrofossils and sediments from Antarctic coastal areas in relation to Late Quaternary climate changes. Radiocarbon ages of the macrofossils, which are interpreted in view of the complexities of the Antarctic marine radiocarbon reservoir and resolution of this dating technique, show a bimodal distribution. The data indicate that marine species inhabited coastal environments from at least 35000 to 20000 yr sp, during Marine Isotope Stage 3 when extensive iceberg calving created a 'meltwater lid' over the Southern Ocean. The general absence of these marine species from 20000 to 8500 yr sp coincides with the subsequent advance of the Antarctic ice sheets during the Last Glacial Maximum. Synchronous re-appearance of the Antarctic marine fossils in emerged beaches around the continent, all of wh ich have Holocene marine-limit elevations an order of magnitude lower than those in the Arctic, reflect minimal isostatic rebound as relative sea-level rise decelerated. Antarctic coastal marine habitat changes around the continent also coincided with increasing sea-ice extent and outlet glacial advances during the mid-Holocene. in view of the diverse environmental changes that occurred around the Earth during this period, it is suggested that Antarctic coastal areas were responding to a mid-Holocene climatic shift associated with the hydrological cycle. This synthesis of Late Quaternary emerged marine deposits demonstrates the application of evaluating circum-Antarctic phenomena from the glacial-terrestrial-marine transition zone.

The Jakobshavns Effect may have been a significant factor in hastening the collapse of palaeo ice sheets with the advent of climatic warming after 18,000 years ago and may precipitate partial collapse of the present‐day Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets following CO2‐induced climatic warming in the decades ahead. The Jakobshavns Effect is observed today on Jakobshavns Glacier, which is located at 69°10′N on the west coast of Greenland. The Jakobshavns Effect is a group of positive feedback mechanisms which allow Jakobshavns Glacier to literally pull ice out of the Greenland Ice Sheet at a rate exceeding 7 km/a across a floating terminus 800 m thick and 6 km wide. The pulling power results from an imbalance of horizontal hydrostatic forces in ice and water columns at the grounding line of the floating terminus. Positive feedback mechanisms that sustain the rapid ice discharge rate are ubiquitous surface crevassing, high summer rates of surface melting, extending creep flow, progressive basal uncoupling, progressive lateral uncoupling, and rapid iceberg calving.

Millennial to orbital-scale rainfall changes in the Mediterranean region and corresponding variations in vegetation patterns were the result of large-scale atmospheric reorganizations. In spite of recent efforts to reconstruct this variability using a range of proxy archives, the underlying physical mechanisms have remained elusive. Through the analysis of a new high-resolution sedimentary section from Lake Van (Turkey) along with climate modeling experiments, we identify massive droughts in the Eastern Med- iterranean for the past four glacial cycles, which have a pervasive link with known intervals of enhanced North Atlantic glacial iceberg calving, weaker Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and Dansgaard-Oeschger cold conditions. On orbital timescales, the topographic effect of large Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and periods with minimum insolation seasonality further exacerbated drought intensities by suppressing both summer and winter precipitation.

Calving of ice is a relatively new area of research in the still young field of glaciology. In the short time that calving has been studied, it has been mainly treated as an afterthought, with the predominant mode of thinking being that it will happen so to concern oneself with why is not important. Many studies dealt with observations of calving front positions over time vs. ice velocity in an attempt to quantify the calving rate as the difference between the two, while others have attempted to deduce some empirical relationship between calving rate and variables such as water depth or temperature. This study instead addresses the question of why, where, and when ice will first become crevassed, which is an obviously necessary condition for a later calving event to occur. Previous work examining the causes of calving used ideas put forth from a variety of fields, including civil engineering, materials science, and results from basic physics and mechanics. These theories are re-examined here and presented as part of a larger whole. Important results from the field of fracture mechanics are utilized frequently, and these results can be used as a predictor of ice behavior and intrinsic properties of ice, as well as properties like back stresses induced by local pinning points and resistive shears along glacial ice boundaries. A theory of fracture for a material experiencing creep is also presented with applications to ice shelves and crevasse penetration. Finally, a speculative theory regarding large scale iceberg formation is presented. It is meant mainly as an impetus to further discussion on the topic, with the hope that a model relating crevasse geometries to flow parameters can result in crevasse spacings that could produce the tabular icebergs which are so newsworthy. The primary focus of this thesis is to move away from the "after the fact" studies that are so common in calving research, and instead devote energy to determining what creates the conditions that drive the calving of ice in the first place.

Clasts from the Cape Roberts Project cores CRP-2/2A and CRP-3 provide indications of glacially influenced depositional environments in Oligocene and Miocene strata in the western Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica. CRP-2/2A is interpreted to represent strongly glacially influenced, unconformity bound depositional sequences produced by repeated advance and retreat of floating and grounded ice across the shelf. A similar interpretation is extended to the upper 330 meters of the CRP-3 core, but the lower part of the core records shallow marine deposition with significantly less glacial influence. Clast shape analysis from selected coarse-grained facies throughout the cored interval indicates that most clasts are glacially sourced, with little distinction between diamictite and conglomeratic facies. Three dimensional clast fabric analysis from units immediately above sequence boundaries generally display weak or random fabrics and do not suggest that grounded ice actually reached the drillsite at these intervals. Striated and outsized clasts present in fine-grained lithofacies throughout the cores provide further evidence of sub-glacially transported sediment and iceberg rafting. The distribution of these striated and out-sized clasts indicate that a significant glacial influence persisted through most of the time represented by the cores with glaciers actively calving at sea-level introducing ice-berg rafted glacial debris even in the earliest Oligocene.

Cape Roberts Project drill core 3 (CRP-3) was obtained from Roberts ridge, a sea-floor high located at 77°S, 12 km offshore from Cape Roberts in western McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The recovered core is about 939 m long and comprises strata dated as being early Oligocene (possibly latest Eocene) in age, resting unconformably on ~116 m of basement rocks consisting of Palaeozoic Beacon Supergroup sediments. The core includes ten facies commonly occurring in five major associations that are repeated in particular sequences throughout the core and which are interpreted as representing different depositional environments through time. Depositional systems inferred to be represented in the succession include: outer shelf, inner shelf, nearshore to shoreface each under iceberg influence, deltaic and/or grounding-line fan, and ice proximal-ice marginal-subglacial (mass flow/rainout diamictite/subglacial till) singly or in combination. The record is taken to represent the initial talus/alluvial fan setting of a glaciated rift margin adjacent to the block-uplifted Transantarctic Mountains. Development of a deltaic succession upcore was probably associated with the formation of palaeo-Mackay valley with temperate glaciers in its headwaters. At that stage glaciation was intense enough to support glaciers ending in the sea elsewhere along the coast, but a local glacier was fluctuating down to the sea by the time the youngest part of CRP-3 was being deposited. Changes in palaeoenvironmental interpretations in this youngest part of the core are used to estimate relative glacial proximity to the drillsite through time. These inferred glacial fluctuations are compared with the global d180 and Mg/Ca curves to evaluate the potential of glacial fluctuations on Antarctica for influencing these records of global change. Although the comparisons are tentative at present, the records do have similarities, but there are also some differences that require further evaluation.

The IMAGES core MD99-2343, recovered from a sediment drift north of the island of Minorca, in the north-western Mediterranean Sea, holds a high-resolution sequence that is perfectly suited to study the oscillations of the overturning system of the Western Mediterranean Deep Water (WMDW). Detailed analysis of grain-size and bulk geochemical composition reveals the sensitivity of this region to climate changes at both orbital and centennial-millennial temporal scales during the last 50 kyr. The dominant orbital pattern in the K/Al record indicates that sediment supply to the basin was controlled by the insolation evolution at 40°N, which forced changes in the fluvial regime, with more efficient sediment transport during insolation maxima. This orbital control also modulated the long-term pattern of the WMDW intensity as illustrated by the silt/clay ratio. However, deep convection was particularly sensitive to climatic changes at shorter time-scales, i.e. to centennial-millennial glacial and Holocene oscillations that are well documented by all the paleocurrent intensity proxies (Si/Al, Ti/Al and silt/clay ratios). Benthic isotopic records (d13C and d18O) show a Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) pattern of variability of WMDW properties, which can be associated with changing intensities of the deep currents system. The most prominent reduction on the WMDW overturning was caused by the post-glacial sea level rise. Three main scenarios of WMDW overturning are revealed: a strong mode during D-O Stadials, a weak mode during D-O Interstadials and an intermediate mode during cooling transitions. In addition, D-O Stadials associated with Heinrich events (HEs) have a very distinct signature as the strong mode of circulation, typical for the other D-O Stadials, was never reached during HE due to the surface freshening induced by the inflowing polar waters. Consequently, the WMDW overturning system oscillated around the intermediate mode of circulation during HE. Though surface conditions were more stable during the Holocene, the WMDW overturning cell still reacted synchronously to short-lived events, as shown by increments in the planktonic d18O record, triggering quick reinforcements of the deep water circulation. Overall, these results highlight the sensitivity of the WMDW to rapid climate change which in the recent past were likely induced by oceanographic and atmospheric reorganizations in the North Atlantic region.

Este artículo apunta a mostrar que el concepto de identidad e incluso el de su politización no son más que una punta de iceberg para entender procesos mucho más complejos de individuación y comunalización que tornan diverso y a la vez ensamblan lo que se entiende y siente en torno a "ser mapuche hoy". Para ello se exploran factores que influyen en la diversificación de propuestas y respuestas al momento de fijar o aceptar políticas culturales para visibilizar al Pueblo Mapuche, haciendo foco en reflexiones y posicionamientos de los pu wece o jóvenes y en los diálogos explícitos e implícitos de crítica o apego que mantienen con otras perspectivas. El análisis se apoya en algunos conceptos explicativos anidados (formaciones nacionales y provinciales de alteridad, geografías estatales de exclusión/inclusión, movilidades estructuradas, aboriginalidad) que se han desarrollado en trabajos anteriores, e introduce el de formaciones Mapuche de sí, en tanto articulaciones no azarosas de individuación en términos de subjetividad, identidad y agencia.

Quantitative coccolithophore analyses were performed in core MD01-2446, located in the mid-latitude North Atlantic, to reconstruct climatically induced sea-surface water conditions throughout Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 14-9. The data are compared to new and available paleoenvironmental proxies from the same site as well as other nearby North Atlantic records that support the coccolithophore signature at glacial-interglacial to millennial climate scale. Total coccolithophore absolute abundance increases during interglacials but abruptly drops during the colder glacial phases and deglaciations. Coccolithophore warm-water taxa (wwt) indicate that MIS11c and MIS9e experienced warmer and more stable conditions throughout the whole photic zone compared to MIS13. MIS11 was a long-lasting warmer and stable interglacial characterized by a climate optimum during MIS11c when a more prominent influence of the subtropical front at the site is inferred. The wwt pattern also suggests distinct interstadial and stadial events lasting about 4-10 kyr. The glacial increases of Gephyrocapsa margereli-G. muellerae 3-4 µm along with higher values of Corg, additionally supported by the total alkenone abundance at Site U1313, indicate more productive surface waters, likely reflecting the migration of the polar front into the mid-latitude North Atlantic. Distinctive peaks of G. margereli-muellerae (> 4 µm), C. pelagicus pelagicus, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma left coiling, and reworked nannofossils, combined with minima in total nannofossil accumulation rate, are tracers of Heinrich-type events during MIS12 and MIS10. Additional Heinrich-type events are suggested during MIS12 and MIS14 based on biotic proxies, and we discuss possible iceberg sources at these times. Our results improve the understanding of mid-Brunhes paleoclimate and the impact on phytoplankton diversity in the mid-latitude North Atlantic region.

Surface and deepwater paleoclimate records in Irminger Sea core SO82-5 (59°N, 31°W) and Icelandic Sea core PS2644 (68°N, 22°W) exhibit large fluctuations in thermohaline circulation (THC) from 60 to 18 calendar kyr B.P., with a dominant periodicity of 1460 years from 46 to 22 calendar kyr B.P., matching the Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) cycles in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) temperature record [Grootes and Stuiver, 1997, doi:10.1029/97JC00880]. During interstadials, summer sea surface temperatures (SSTsu) in the Irminger Sea averaged to 8°C, and sea surface salinities (SSS) averaged to ~36.5, recording a strong Irminger Current and Atlantic THC. During stadials, SSTsu dropped to 2°-4°C, in phase with SSS drops by ~1-2. They reveal major meltwater injections along with the East Greenland Current, which turned off the North Atlantic deepwater convection and hence the heat advection to the north, in harmony with various ocean circulation and ice models. On the basis of the IRD composition, icebergs came from Iceland, east Greenland, and perhaps Svalbard and other northern ice sheets. However, the southward drifting icebergs were initially jammed in the Denmark Strait, reaching the Irminger Sea only with a lag of 155-195 years. We also conclude that the abrupt stadial terminations, the D-O warming events, were tied to iceberg melt via abundant seasonal sea ice and brine water formation in the meltwater-covered northwestern North Atlantic. In the 1/1460-year frequency band, benthic ?18O brine water spikes led the temperature maxima above Greenland and in the Irminger Sea by as little as 95 years. Thus abundant brine formation, which was induced by seasonal freezing of large parts of the northwestern Atlantic, may have finally entrained a current of warm surface water from the subtropics and thereby triggered the sudden reactivation of the THC. In summary, the internal dynamics of the east Greenland ice sheet may have formed the ultimate pacemaker of D-O cycles.

Sediment core logs from six sediment cores in the Labrador Sea show millennial-scale climate variability during the last glacial by recording all Heinrich events and several major Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles. The same millennial-scale climate change is documented for surface-water d18O records of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (left coiled); hence the surface-water d18O record can be derived from sediment core logging by means of multiple linear regression, providing a paleoclimate proxy record at very high temporal resolution (70 yrs). For the Labrador Sea, sediment core logs contain important information about deep-water current velocities and also reflect the variable input of IRD from different sources as inferred from grain-size analysis, benthic d18O, the relation of density and p-wave velocity, and magnetic susceptibility. For the last glacial, faster deep-water currents which correspond to highs in sediment physical properties, occurred during iceberg discharge and lasted for a several centuries to a few millennia. Those enhanced currents might have contributed to increased production of intermediate waters during times of reduced production of North Atlantic Deep Water. Hudson Strait might have acted as a major supplier of detrital carbonate only during lowered sea level (greater ice extent). During coldest atmospheric temperatures over Greenland, deep-water currents increased during iceberg discharge in the Labrador Sea, then surface water freshened shortly after, while the abrupt atmospheric temperature rise happened after a larger time lag of >=1 kyr. The correlation implies a strong link and common forcing for atmosphere, sea surface, and deep water during the last glacial at millennial time scales but decoupling at orbital time scales.

En la provincia de La Pampa son escasos los datos sobre relevamiento de plagas y de especies benéficas en lechuga, por ello resulta necesario conocer e investigar los organismos perjudiciales y sus enemigos naturales y las condiciones predisponentes al incremento de sus poblaciones. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron determinar las especies fitófagas para dos variedades de lechuga, en dos sistemas de producción, e identificar las especies benéficas que puedan actuar como controladores biológicos. El estudio se realizó en la huerta de la Facultad de Agronomía de la UNLPam, con muestreos semanales, desde julio hasta octubre de 2004, a campo con riego complementario y bajo cubierta en macrotúnel con riego por goteo, con las variedades de lechuga Grand Rapid y Gallega de Invierno. En cada variedad y en cada sistema se revisaron 6 plantas al azar, registrándose: especie, número de individuos y su estado de desarrollo. Se comparó mediante ANOVA y test de Tukey (a = 0,05). Se detectó la presencia de dos especies de pulgones: Myzus persicae Sulzer (Homoptera: Aphididae) y Nasonovia ribisnigri (Mosley) (primera cita de N. ribisnigri para la provincia de La Pampa). El mayor número de pulgones se concentró en el cultivo protegido bajo cubierta. Se registraron dos enemigos naturales de los pulgones: un hongo entomopatógeno y un parasitoide: Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). También se encontraron, en bajas densidades, larvas de Naupactus leucoloma Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) que se alimentaban de las hojas.

A partir de 1990 la adopción de los invernáculos, así como la irrupción y crecimiento de la gran distribución (GD) generaron cambios en la estructura comercial y productiva del cinturón hortícola de Mar del Plata (Argentina). Para analizar las transformaciones más significativas se efectuó un estudio de caso considerando las innovaciones introducidas por 11 agricultores en diversos aspectos. Se enfatizaron los cultivos de tomate y pimiento porque acompañaron la expansión de la producción bajo cubierta y los de lechuga, tanto por su importancia a campo como por continuar la rotación de los dos anteriores dentro del invernáculo. Los productores más relacionados establemente con la GD planifican en función de la demanda. En cambio, los todavía vinculados con la comercialización tradicional tienden a diversificar su producción realizando las ventas en un puesto propio del mercado mayorista local o a acopiadores de otras zonas. Ambos grupos no sólo han buscado alternativas de mayor rentabilidad a través de la vía comercial; también las han aplicado en la organización del trabajo y las tecnologías utilizadas.

El objetivo fue determinar la concentración efectiva media de reducción del crecimiento radical (CE50), de una formulación del herbicida glifosato mediante bioensayos de germinación con semillas de lechuga y de trigo. Para lechuga se probaron 9 dosis/tratamientos decrecientes entre 1.215 y 0,01215 g i.a.ha-1 (formulado: Sal amónica de la N-Fosfonometil glicina, 40,5 [g e.a. glifosato 36,9% p/v]) y para trigo 5 dosis decrecientes (entre 12,15 y 1,215 g i.a.ha-1) y su respectivo control negativo (agua destilada). Se utilizaron cajas de Petri, con papel de filtro en la base humedecido con 3 ml de la solución correspondiente. Se sembraron 20 semillas por caja, distribuyéndose los tratamientos en bloques al azar con 4 repeticiones, en cámara de crecimiento a 20°C con alternancia de luz y oscuridad. Se midió la longitud radicular de todas las semillas de cada tratamiento con calibre digital. Se determinó el porcentaje de germinación y se calculó el índice de germinación. Las CE50, es decir, las dosis que redujeron en un 50% el crecimiento radical para lechuga y trigo, fueron 6,682 y 9,416 g i.a.ha-1, respectivamente. Los materiales probados resultaron sensibles a distintas dosis de glifosato y por lo tanto pueden utilizarse como indicadores biológicos de toxicidad específica.

“Decisiones Co0dianas” es un libro con historias reales, no son invenciones, son tes\‐ monios que Fundación Desa-o ha recopilado este úl\mo año y que sucedieron en varias provincias de nuestro país. Hemos escogido 12 tes\monios, los que creímos más representa \vos, aunque recopilamos muchos más. En este contexto presentamos un aspecto de la co\dianidad de la vida de las mujeres que \enen derecho a que su salud integral sea preservada si está embarazada, o que se revea si es justo que vivan maternidades forzadas y abortos injustos. Co\dianidad que demuestra la discriminación y violencia de un sistema que no informa a las mujeres y peor a las/los adolescentes sobre su sexualidad o sobre los métodos an\concep\vos. Esta es la punta de un iceberg el cual oculta la magnitud de un problema inmenso como es la violencia sexual y que nos invita a reflexionar sobre “¿de qué lado estamos?” cuando se trata de posicionarnos. Todas las mujeres de estos tes\monios \enen su propia historia, sus propias razones, todas son válidas para ellas y eso es lo único que importa. Al Estado ecuatoriano le toca legislar para que las mujeres sean iguales ante la ley y no objeto de discriminación por ser mujeres, ni el aborto se siga produciendo en condiciones de riesgo como el causante de este feminicidio social que cada año cobra la muerte y enfermedad de cientos de mujeres.
