Hydrogenated amorphous and nanocrystalline silicon, deposited by catalytic chemical vapour deposition, have been doped during deposition by the addition of diborane and phosphine in the feed gas, with concentrations in the region of 1%. The crystalline fraction, dopant concentration and electrical properties of the films are studied. The nanocrystalline films exhibited a high doping efficiency, both for n and p doping, and electrical characteristics similar to those of plasma-deposited films. The doping efficiency of n-type amorphous silicon is similar to that obtained for plasma-deposited electronic-grade amorphous silicon, whereas p-type layers show a doping efficiency of one order of magnitude lower. A higher deposition temperature of 450°C was required to achieve p-type films with electrical characteristics similar to those of plasma-deposited films.

Polymorphous Si is a nanostructured form of hydrogenated amorphous Si that contains a small fraction of Si nanocrystals or clusters. Its thermally induced transformations such as relaxation, dehydrogenation, and crystallization have been studied by calorimetry and evolved gas analysis as a complementary technique. The observed behavior has been compared to that of conventional hydrogenated amorphous Si and amorphous Si nanoparticles. In the temperature range of our experiments (650700 C), crystallization takes place at almost the same temperature in polymorphous and in amorphous Si. In contrast, dehydrogenation processes reflect the presence of different hydrogen states. The calorimetry and evolved gas analysis thermograms clearly show that polymorphous Si shares hydrogen states of both amorphous Si and Si nanoparticles. Finally, the total energy of the main SiH group present in polymorphous Si has been quantified.

Thin films of nanostructured silicon (ns-Si:H) were deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition in the presence of silicon nanoparticles at 100 C substrate temperature using silane and hydrogen gas mixture under continuous wave (cw) plasma conditions. The nanostructure of the films has been demonstrated by diverse ways: transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, which have shown the presence of ordered silicon clusters (1!=2 nm) embedded in an amorphous silicon matrix. Due to the presence of these ordered domains, the films crystallize faster than standard hydrogenated amorphous silicon samples, as evidenced by electrical measurements during the thermal annealing.

We present a study on the development and the evaluation of a fully automated radio-frequency glow discharge system devoted to the deposition of amorphous thin film semiconductors and insulators. The following aspects were carefully addressed in the design of the reactor: (1) cross contamination by dopants and unstable gases, (2) capability of a fully automated operation, (3) precise control of the discharge parameters, particularly the substrate temperature, and (4) high chemical purity. The new reactor, named ARCAM, is a multiplasma-monochamber system consisting of three separated plasma chambers located inside the same isothermal vacuum vessel. Thus, the system benefits from the advantages of multichamber systems but keeps the simplicity and low cost of monochamber systems. The evaluation of the reactor performances showed that the oven-like structure combined with a differential dynamic pumping provides a high chemical purity in the deposition chamber. Moreover, the studies of the effects associated with the plasma recycling of material from the walls and of the thermal decomposition of diborane showed that the multiplasma-monochamber design is efficient for the production of abrupt interfaces in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based devices. Also, special attention was paid to the optimization of plasma conditions for the deposition of low density of states a-Si:H. Hence, we also present the results concerning the effects of the geometry, the substrate temperature, the radio frequency power and the silane pressure on the properties of the a-Si:H films. We investigated the influence of a hydrogenated disordered carbon (a-C:H) layer on the nucleation of diamond. Substrates c-Si<100>, SiAlON, and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite {0001} were used in this study. The substrate surfaces were characterized with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) while diamond growth was followed with Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that on silicon and SiAlON substrates the presence of the a-C:H layer enabled diamond to grow readily without any polishing treatment. Moreover, more continuous diamond films could be grown when the substrate was polished with diamond powder prior to the deposition of the a-C:H layer. This important result suggests that the nucleation of diamond occurs readily on disordered carbon surfaces, and that the formation of this type of layer is indeed one step in the diamond nucleation mechanism. Altogether, the data refute the argument that silicon defects play a direct role in the nucleation process. Auger spectra revealed that for short deposition times and untreated silicon surfaces, the deposited layer corresponds to an amorphous carbon layer. In these cases, the subsequent diamond nucleation was found to be limited. However, when the diamond nucleation density was found to be high; i.e., after lengthy deposits of a¿C:H or after diamond polishing, the Auger spectra suggested diamondlike carbon layers.

Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels induce activation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), a stress-activated protein kinase potentially participating in the development of atherosclerosis. The nature of the lipoprotein components inducing p38 MAPK activation has remained unclear however. We show here that both LDLs and high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) have the ability to stimulate the p38 MAPKs with potencies that correlate with their cholesterol content. Cholesterol solubilized in methyl-beta-cyclodextrin was sufficient to activate the p38 MAPK pathway. Liposomes made of phosphatidylcholine (PC) or sphingomyelin, the two main phospholipids found in lipoproteins, were unable to stimulate the p38 MAPKs. In contrast, PC liposomes loaded with cholesterol potently activated this pathway. Reducing the cholesterol content of LDL particles lowered their ability to activate the p38 MAPKs. Cell lines representative of the three main cell types found in blood vessels (endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts) all activated their p38 MAPK pathway in response to LDLs or cholesterol-loaded PC liposomes. These results indicate that elevated cholesterol content in lipoproteins, as seen in hypercholesterolemia, favors the activation of the stress-activated p38 MAPK pathway in cells from the vessel wall, an event that might contribute to the development of atherosclerosis.

This study was undertaken in the framework of a larger European project dealing with the characterization of fat co- and by-products from the food chain, available for feed uses. In this study, we compare the effects, on the fatty acid (FA) and tocol composition of chicken and rabbit tissues, of the addition to feeds of a palm fatty acid distillate, very low in trans fatty acids (TFA), and two levels of the corresponding hydrogenated by-product, containing intermediate and high levels of TFA. Thus, the experimental design included three treatments, formulated for each species, containing the three levels of TFA defined above. Obviously, due to the use of hydrogenated fats, the levels of saturated fatty acids (SFA) show clear differences between the three dietary treatments. The results show that diets high in TFA (76 g/kg fat) compared with those low in TFA (4.4 g/kg fat) led to a lower content of tocopherols and tocotrienols in tissues, although these differences were not always statistically significant, and show a different pattern for rabbit and chicken. The TFA content in meat, liver and plasma increased from low-to-high TFA feeds in both chicken and rabbit. However, the transfer ratios from feed were not proportional to the TFA levels in feeds, reflecting certain differences according to the animal species. Moreover, feeds containing fats higher in TFA induced significant changes in tissue SFA, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids composition, but different patterns can be described for chicken and rabbit and for each type of tissue.

Snow and ice removal on public streets is a critical part of the work of departments of transportation in northern U.S. states, including Iowa. Iowa is also a state rich in agricultural resources, some of which undergo industrial processes that generate a number of byproducts, e.g., in converting corn to ethanol or soy to biodiesel. It would be desirable to find those that, with a minimum of additional processing, can be used as a deicing compound, either alone or in combination with products currently in use. The focus of this work is therefore to investigate by-products from agricultural processes that may be suitable for use as deicing applications. This topic has been investigated in the past by others, with many patented products described in the literature. An initial screening was carried out to assess the potential acceptability of selected commercial products, as well as a glycerol developed for this project. Based on the variety of parameters tested, the product combination that shows the greatest promise for future application consists of 80% glycerol with 20% NaCl.

We study the effects of the adoption of new agricultural technologies on structural transformation. To guide empirical work, we present a simple model where the effect of agriculturalproductivity on industrial development depends on the factor bias of technical change. We testthe predictions of the model by studying the introduction of genetically engineered soybeanseeds in Brazil, which had heterogeneous effects on agricultural productivity across areas withdifferent soil and weather characteristics. We find that technical change in soy production wasstrongly labor saving and lead to industrial growth, as predicted by the model.

Objectives: Dermatophytes are highly specialized fungi which are the most common agents of superficial mycoses in humans and animals. The particular ability of these microorganisms to invade and multiply within keratinized host structures is presumably linked to their secreted keratinolytic activity, which is therefore a major putative virulence attribute of these fungi. The overall adaptation and transcriptional response of dermatophytes during protein degradation and/or infection is largely unknown. Methods: A Trichophyton rubrum cDNA microarray was developed and used for the transcriptional analysis of T. rubrum and Arthroderma benhamiae cells during growth on protein substrates. Moreover, the gene expression profile in A. benhamiae cells was monitored during infection of guinea pigs. Results: T. rubrum and A. benhamiae cells activate a large set of genes encoding secreted endo- and exoproteases during growth on soy and keratin. In addition, other specifically induced factors with potential implication in protein utilization were identified, e.g. multiple transporters, metabolic enzymes, transcription factors and hypothetical proteins with unknown function. Notably however, the protease gene expression profile in the fungal cells during infection was significantly different from the pattern elicited during in vitro growth on keratin. Conclusions: Our results suggest specific functions of individual proteases during infection, which may not be restricted to the degradation of keratin. This first, broad in vivo transcriptional profiling approach in dermatophytes gives new molecular insights into pathogenicity associated adaptation mechanisms that make these microorganisms the most successful causitive agents of superficial mycoses.

Activation of cultured hepatic stellate cells correlated with an enhanced expression of proteins involved in uptake and storage of fatty acids (FA translocase CD36, Acyl-CoA synthetase 2) and retinol (cellular retinol binding protein type I, CRBP-I; lecithin:retinol acyltransferases, LRAT). The increased expression of CRBP-I and LRAT during hepatic stellate cells activation, both involved in retinol esterification, was in contrast with the simultaneous depletion of their typical lipid-vitamin A (vitA) reserves. Since hepatic stellate cells express high levels of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor beta (PPARbeta), which become further induced during transition into the activated phenotype, we investigated the potential role of PPARbeta in the regulation of these changes. Administration of L165041, a PPARbeta-specific agonist, further induced the expression of CD36, B-FABP, CRBP-I, and LRAT, whereas their expression was inhibited by antisense PPARbeta mRNA. PPARbeta-RXR dimers bound to CRBP-I promoter sequences. Our observations suggest that PPARbeta regulates the expression of these genes, and thus could play an important role in vitA storage. In vivo, we observed a striking association between the enhanced expression of PPARbeta and CRBP-I in activated myofibroblast-like hepatic stellate cells and the manifestation of vitA autofluorescent droplets in the fibrotic septa after injury with CCl4 or CCl4 in combination with retinol.

Two common lung-related complications in the neonate are respiratory distress syndrome, which is associated with a failure to generate low surface tension at the air-liquid interface because of pulmonary surfactant insufficiency, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung injury with reduced alveolarization. Surfactant phosphatidylcholine (PC) molecular species composition during alveolarization has not been examined. Mass spectrometry analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of rodents and humans revealed significant changes in surfactant PC during alveolar development and BPD. In rats, total PC content rose during alveolarization, which was caused by an increase in palmitoylmyristoyl-PC (16:0/14:0PC) concentration. Furthermore, two animal models of BPD exhibited a specific reduction in 16:0/14:0PC content. In humans, 16:0/14:0PC content was specifically decreased in patients with BPD and emphysema compared with patients without alveolar pathology. Palmitoylmyristoyl-PC content increased with increasing intrinsic surfactant curvature, suggesting that it affects surfactant function in the septating lung. The changes in acyl composition of PC were attributed to type II cells producing an altered surfactant during alveolar development. These data are compatible with extracellular surfactant 16:0/14:0PC content being an indicator of alveolar architecture of the lung.
