Surface morphology of polystyrene (PS) films on different substrates by spin-coating before and after annealing was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effects of polymer molecular weight, substrates, solvents, and annealing conditions on the morphology of the films were investigated. Before annealing, the grain height decreases, and simultaneously the grain diameter increases with molecular weight (M-w) within the measured molecular weight. After annealing. the situation is opposite, i.e., the grain height increases while the grain diameter decreases with M-w. Furthermore, after annealing the smaller surface roughness (Ra) was obtained. It was also found that film surface roughness (Ra) depends on the vapor pressure and dipole moment of different used solvents as well as the substrates. The experimental results show that when the used solvents have similar dipole moment but different vapor pressure, the Ra of PS film decreased with the decreasing vapor pressure of solvents whether on silicon or on mica. And when the used solvents have close vapor pressure but different dipole moment, the Ra decreased with the increasing of solvent dipole moments on both substrates.

The effect of the concentration of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6-(1,1,7, 7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) as dopant in tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminum (Alq(3)) on the charge carrier transport in Alq(3):DCJTB was investigated by measuring the steady current-voltage characteristics and the transient electroluminescence. The dopant concentration dependence of the current-voltage relationship clearly indicates the carrier trapping by the DCJTB molecule. The DCJTB concentration significantly affects the electron mobility in Alq(3):DCJTB. The mobility has a nontrivial dependence on the doping level. For relatively low doping levels, less than 1%, the electron mobility of Alq(3):DCJTB decreases with the doping level. An increasing mobility is then observed if the dopant concentration is further increased, followed by a decrease for doping levels larger than similar to2%. The change of the electron mobility with the DCJTB concentration in Alq(3) is attributed to the additional energetic disorder due to potential fluctuations caused by the dipole-dipole interaction of random distribution dopant at the relatively low doping concentration, and to the phase separation at the high doping concentration.

Electronic structures of the heterojunction between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPc) were studied with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. Band bending and an interface dipole were observed at the interface due to the formation of an electron accumulation layer and a depletion layer in F16CuPc and CuPc, respectively. Such an energy level alignment leads to interesting ambipolar characteristics for application of the CuPc/F16CuPc junction in organic field-effect transistors.

Four different sizes of citrate-protected silver nanoplates with the corresponding in-plane dipole resonance band at 530, 619, 778, and 858 nm, respectively, are synthesized for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) study. Their aggregation behaviors are monitored by use of UV-vis spectroscopy. During the aggregation process, a marked red shift of the in-plane dipole resonance of silver nanoplates is observed, whereas other resonance modes of them only have small alterations in the site or intensity. Aggregated silver nanoplates can serve as active SERS substrates with an enhancement factor of about 4.5 x 10(5) using 2-aminothiophenol as a probing molecule. The SERS performance of silver nanoplates is even superior to the commonly used Lee-Meisel silver colloid, making them very attractive for SERS applications.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials, and dissociation energies of the title molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied by use of density functional methods B3LYP, BLYP, BHLYP, BPW91, and B3PW91. The calculated results are compared with experiments and previous theoretical studies. It was found that the calculated properties are highly dependent on the functionals employed, in particular for the dissociation energy and vibrational frequency. For neutral species, pure density functional methods BLYP and BPW91 have relatively good performance in reproducing the experimental bond distance and vibrational frequency. For cations, hybrid exchange functional methods B3LYP and B3PW91 are good in predicting the dissociation energy. For both neutral and charged species, BHLYP tends to give smaller dissociation energy.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials, dissociation energies, and dipole moments of the title molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied using the density functional method. Ground state was assigned for each species. The bonding patterns were analyzed and compared with both the available data and across the series. It was found that besides an ionic component, covalent bonds are formed between the metal s, d orbitals and the silicon 3p orbital. The covalent character increases from ScSi (YSi) to NiSi (PdSi) for 3d (4d) metal monosilicides, then decreases. For 5d metal monosilicides, the covalent character increases from LaSi to OsSi, then decreases. For the dissociation of cations, the dissociation channel depends on the magnitude of the ionization potential between metal and silicon. If the ionization potential of the metal is smaller than that of silicon, channel MSi+-> M++Si is favored. Otherwise, MSi+-> M+Si+ will be favored. A similar behavior was observed for anions, in which the dissociation channel depends on the magnitude of electron affinity.

In this work, a new capping agent, cinnamic acid ( CA) was used to synthesize Au nanoparticles (NPs) under ambient conditions. The size of the NPs can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of reductant ( in our experiment sodium borohydride was used) or CA. The CA-stabilized Au NPs can self-assemble into 'nanowire-like' or 'pearl-necklace-like' nanostructures by adjusting the molar ratio of CA to HAuCl4 or by tuning the pH value of the Au colloidal solution. The process of Au NPs self-assembly was investigated by UV - vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that the induced dipole - dipole interaction is the driving force of Au NP linear assemblies.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, dissociation energies, electron affinities, ionization potentials and dipole moments of the title molecules in neutral and charged ions were studied by use of density functional method. Ground states for each molecule were assigned. For neutral and cationic molecules, the bond distance decreases from YC (YC+) to RhC (RhC+), then increases, while for anionic molecules, the bond distance decreases from YC- to RuC-, then increases. Opposite trend was observed for vibrational frequency. The bond ionic character decreases from ZrC to PdC for neutral molecules. The bonding patterns are discussed and compared with the available studies.

The fully relaxed single-bond torsional potentials and orientation-related rotational potentials of 2,2'-bithiophene (BT) under the interaction of an external electric field (EF) constructed by point charges have been evaluated with semi-empirical AMI and PM3 calculations. The torsional potentials are sensitive to both EF strength and direction. While the EF is parallel to the molecular long axis, the torsional barrier around C-x-C-x' bond obviously rises with increasing the EF strength, whereas the relative energies of syn and anti minima show a slight change. The interaction between the EF and the induced dipole moment has been proposed to elucidate this observation. On the other hand, the relative energy difference between the syn and anti minima shows an obvious change, while the EF is perpendicular to the molecular long axis. This feature has been ascribed to the interaction between the EF and the permanent dipole moment of BT. Furthermore, conformational and orientational analyses in two dimensions have been carried out by changing the torsional and rotational angles in the different EF. The conformation and orientation of a gas-phase BT in the EF are governed by both the above factors.

Conformational analysis of 2,2'-bithiophene (BT) under the influence of an electric field (EF) constructed by point charges has been performed by using semi-empirical Austin Model 1 (AM1) and Parametric model number 3 (PM3) calculations. When the EF perpendicular to the molecular conjugation chain is applied, both AM1 and PM3 calculations show an energy increase of the anti-conformation. AM1 predicts that the global minimum shifts to syn-conformation when the EF strength is larger than a critical value. and PM predicts that the local minimum in anti-conformation vanishes. This kind of EF effect has been ascribed to the EF and dipole moment interaction.

A liquid crystalline (LC) copolyether has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-dibromoundecane with a 50/50 (both in %) equal composition of the 7- and 11-methylene monomers [coTPP-7/11(5/5)]. A mono-domain with a homeotropic alignment can be induced by a thin film surface in the LC phase. When an electrostatic field is applied to the surface-induced mono-domains parallel to the thin film surface normal, the molecular alignment undergoes a change from the homeotropic to uniaxial homogeneous arrangement. However, when the field is applied to a direction perpendicular to the thin film surface normal. the molecular alignment is about 10 degrees -tilt with respect to the homeotropic alignment toward the a*-axis. This is because the permanent dipole moment of the copolyether is not right vertical to the molecular direction. The calculation of molecular dipoles indicates that the permanent dipole moment of this copolyether is about 70 degrees away from the molecular axis, which leads to a negative dielectric anisotropy. It is speculated that the 10 degrees- rather than 20 degrees -tilt is due to a balance between the alignment induced by the electrostatic field and the surface. In the electrostatic field, molecules are subjected to a torque tau, which is determined by the permanent dipole moment P and the electrostatic field E: tau = P x E. The molecular realignment in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the thin film surface normal is determined by satisfying the condition of tau = P x E = 0. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Spectra properties of Ce3+ ions and Eu2+ ions in KZnF3 were studied and energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ was observed in co-doped with Ce3+ and Eu2+ systems. Quantum yields of energy transfer were calculated, The investigated mechanism of energy transfer is electric dipole-dipole interactions, We also noticed that the existence of Ce3+ is conductive to observe f-f transition emission of Eu2+ ions.

Molecular dynamics is applied to the system of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate). The simulation shows that for the block copolymer system, a layered structure, which reflects microphase separation, is obtained and this structure is stable. In order to elucidate that the formation of the layered structure is reasonable, some static properties such as the radial distribution function and the dipole moment are analyzed in some detail.

The steady state voltammogram at a microdisk electrode is used to measure the diffusion coefficient and standard heterogeneous rate constant (k(s)) of ferrocene in polyelectrolyte PEG + LiClO4. The k(s) obtained is smaller in polyelectrolyte than in liquid medium. It is proposed that the polymer solvent electron transfer dynamics are affected by the relaxation rates of the ether dipole sites on the polymer chains, which are in turn constrained by the rates of polymer chain segment, or local structure, relaxations. The dependence of k(s) on temperature is observed. The k(s) increases with increasing temperature.

Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the influence of sterols on the lipophilic ion transport through the BLM. The mole fraction of the sterols (cholesterol, oxidized cholesterol). as referred to total lipid, was varied in a range of 0-0.8. Data demonstrate that a thin-layer model is suitable to this BLM system. By this model, the number of charges transported per lipophilic ion, the concentration of the ion in the membrane bulk phase and the aqueous/membrane phase partition coefficient could be calculated. These parameters proved that sterols had an obvious influence on the lipophilic ion transport. Cholesterol had a stronger influence on the ion transport than oxidized cholesterol. Its incorporation into egg lecithin membranes increased the partition coefficient beta of the ion up to more than 3-fold. Yet, oxidized cholesterol incorporated into egg lecithin membranes only increased the beta up to less than 2-fold, and the beta had no great variation at different oxidized cholesterol mole fractions. The higher beta obtained was partly due to the trace amount of solvent existing in the core of the lipid bilayers. At the different sterol mole fractions, combining the change of beta with the change of peak current, we also concluded that sterols had somewhat inhibiting effect on the ion transport at the higher sterols mole fraction (>0.4). These results are explained in terms of the possible change of dipole potential of the membrane produced by sterols and the decrease of the membrane fluidity caused by the condensation effect of sterols and the thinning effect caused by sterols. The substituting group (in the oxidized cholesterol) had some inhibiting effects on the ion transport at higher mole fractions (oxidized cholesterol mole fraction >0.4).
