We have investigated the structural evolution of La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 using temperature dependent high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction technique. In a wide temperature range, La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 reveals nanoscale structural inhomogeneity consisting of cubic and tetragonal phases. The present results suggest that domains of nanometer size of the tetragonal (low temperature) phase start nucleating in the cubic (high temperature) phase even above the Neel temperature (T-N). The tetragonal phase fraction increases substantially below T-N. Detailed analysis suggests that the twinned phase is tetragonal, orbital ordered, and insulating. At temperatures below 170 K, a small amount of the cubic phase is retained. The present results reveal the significance of the connectivity between the nanoscale structural phase separation with the physical properties.

We report on the single crystal growth of 50% Sr and Y doped multiferroic DyMnO3 using optical floating zone technique. A comparison of the effect of growth ambience and of chemical substitution on the crystal structure of DyMnO3 is attempted. It is observed that DyMnO3 adopts Pm3m cubic structure with 50% Sr doping whereas with 50% Y doping, the crystal structure is hexagonal P6(3)cm. Orthorhombic Pnma structure is adopted by DyMnO3 when grown in air, whereas hexagonal P6(3)cm structure is obtained when grown under the ambience of argon. The structural polymorphism is discussed in terms of difference in ionic sizes of Sr, Y and Dy, comparable Gibbs free energies and coordination schemes of surrounding oxygens for hexagonal and orthorhombic structures of DyMnO3. In submitted research; nanocrystalline powders having elements Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2 xInxO4 with varied amounts of indium ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were grown-up by modified citrate to nitrate alchemy. The realism of single phase cubic spinel creation of the synthesized ferrite samples was studied by the DTA-TGA, XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, VSM and dielectric measurements. SEM was applied to inspect the morphological variations and EDX was used to determine the compositional mass ratios. The studies on the dielectric constant (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon `'), loss tangent (tan delta), ac conductivity (sigma(ac)), resistive and reactive parts of the impedance analysis (Z' and Z `') at room temperature were also carried out. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) were determined using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Ms. decreased with the increase In3+ doping content, as Fe3+ of 5(mu B) ions are replaced by In3+ of 5 mu(B) ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Phase equilibria in the system Tm-Rh-O at 1200 K is established by isothermal equilibration of selected compositions and phase identification after quenching to room temperature. Six intermetallic phases (Tm3Rh, Tm7Rh3, Tm5Rh3, Tm3Rh2, TmRh, TmRh2 +/-delta) and a ternary oxide TmRhO3 are identified. Based on experimentally determined phase relations, a solid-state electrochemical cell is devised to measure the standard free energy of formation of orthorhombic perovskite TmRhO3 from cubic Tm2O3 and beta-Rh2O3 in the temperature range from (900 to 1300) K. The results can be summarized as: Delta G(f,ox)(o) +/- 104/J.mol(-1) = -46474 + 3.925(T/K). Invoking the Neumann-Kopp rule, the standard enthalpy of formation of TmRhO3 from its constituent elements at 298.15 K is estimated as -1193.89 (+/- 2.86) kJ.mol(-1). The standard entropy of TmRhO3 at 298.15 K is evaluated as 103.8 (+/- 1.6) J.mol(-1).K-1. The oxygen potential-composition diagram and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1200 K and temperature-composition diagrams at constant partial pressures of oxygen are computed from thermodynamic data. The compound TmRhO3 decomposes at 1688 (+/- 2) K in pure oxygen and at 1583 (+/- 2) K in air at standard pressure.

PbZr1-xTixO3 ceramics synthesised by low temperature calcination followed by sintering at 1280 degrees C show a Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB) for compositions of x=0.44-0.51. The morphotropic phase boundary is wider for samples with smaller grain sizes due to the synthesis route. A Rietveld analysis is performed on a composition of x=0.5 composition to quantify the phase fractions of the tetragonal and monoclinic phases present in the PZT system. Temperature dependent X-ray diffraction and dielectric studies of PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 composition demonstrated a phase transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal at 270 degrees C followed by a ferroelectric tetragonal to a paraelectric cubic transition at 370 degrees C. Thus, the poling of these ceramics should be performed below 270 degrees C to benefit from the presence of a monoclinic phase. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The deformation dynamics of metal foils (<0.25 mm thick) subjected to micro-blast wave are presented in this paper. The energy of micro-blast wave emanating from the open end of a polymer tube is used to deliver micro-particles for bio-medical applications. In these experiments metal foils are used to transfer the energy of the micro-blast wave to the micro-particles. Using cubic root scaling law the over pressure of the blast wave at the open end of the polymer tube is estimated and using this peak plate over pressure is estimated. The finite element analysis is used to estimate the velocity profile of the deforming metal foils. The finite element analysis results are compared with experimental results for the maximum deformation and deformed shape. Based on the deformation velocity, metal foil to be used for experiments is selected. Among the materials investigated 0.1 mm thick brass foil has the maximum velocity of 205 m/s and is used in the experiments. It is found from finite element analysis that the particles deposited within a radius of 0.5 mm will leave the foil with nearly equal velocity (error < 5%). The spray cone angle which is the angle of deviation of the path of particles from the axis of the polymer tube is also estimated and found to be less than 7 degrees up to a radius of 0.75 mm. Illustrative experiments are carried out to deliver micro particles (0.7 mu m diameter tungsten) into plant tissues. Particle penetration depth up to 460 mu m was achieved in ground tissue of potato tuber. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The combustion synthesis has been utilized to prepare nanophased powders of cobalt spinel ferrite using ODH and glycine fuels. The product was characterized by X‐ray diffraction; Fourier transformed spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV‐Vis absorption etc. The XRD patterns reveal spinal cubic structure. SEM profiles show the product is porous, agglomeration, irregular in shape. The crystallite size was estimated using Scherer’s formula and W‐H plots and show nano in size (13 nm: ODH & 36 nm: Glycine). The UV‐Vis absorption shows at ∼430 nm in both the samples.

Red light emitting cubic Y1.95Eu0.05O3 nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method using ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) as fuel. The systematic studies on the effect of calcination temperature on its structural, photoluminescence (PL), and thermoluminescence (TL) properties were reported. The crystallinity of the samples increases, and the strain is reduced with increasing calcination temperature. SEM micrographs reveal that samples lose their porous nature with an increase in calcination temperature. PL spectra show that the intensity of the red emission (611 nm) is highly dependent on the calcination temperature and is found to be 10 times higher when compared to as-formed samples. The optical band gap (E-g) was found to reduce with an increase of calcination temperature due to reduction of surface defects. The thermoluminescence (TL) intensity was found to be much enhanced in the 1000 degrees C calcined sample. The increase of PL and TL intensity with calcination temperature is attributed to the decrease of the nonradiative recombination probability, which occurs through the elimination of quenching defects. The trap parameters (E, b, s) were estimated from Chen's glow peak shape method and are discussed in detail for their possible usage in dosimetry.

Bulk texture measurement of multi-axial forged body center cubic interstitial free steel performed in this study using x-ray and neutron diffraction indicated the presence of a strong {101}aOE (c) 111 > single texture component. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations could successfully predict the formation of this texture component by incorporating the complicated strain path followed during this process and assuming the activity of {101}aOE (c) 111 > slip system. In addition, a first-order estimate of mechanical properties in terms of highly anisotropic yield locus and Lankford parameter was also obtained from the simulations.

A systematic x-ray and neutron powder diffraction study of the giant tetragonality multiferroic (1-x) BiFeO3-(x) PbTiO3 have revealed that the compositions close to the morphotropic phase boundary present two different structural phase transition scenarios on cooling from the cubic phase: (i) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) -> tetragonal (T-1) and (ii) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c) -> tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c). The comparatively larger tetragonality (c/a - 1) of the T-1 phase as compared to the coexisting isostructural T-2 phase is shown to be a result of significantly greater degree of overlap of the Pb/Bi-6s and Ti/Fe-3d with the O-2p orbitals as compared to that in the T-2 phase. The formation/suppression of the minor metastable rhombohedral phase seems to be governed by subtle play of local kinetic factors. In the scenario when the minor rhombohedral (R) phase is formed along with the tetragonal phases it is able to accommodate the large transformation stress in the system due to formation of the tetragonal phases, and prevent the solid from disintegration into powder after sintering. When the metastable rhombohedral phase is not formed, the large transformation strain ruptures the grain boundaries leading to fragmentation of the dense solid to powder. The role of crystallite size and clustering in influencing the stability of the structures of a large tetragonality ferroelectric system 0.6BiFeO(3)-0.4PbTiO(3) was investigated. The system exhibits cubic phase for a crystallite size similar to 25 nm, three times larger than the critical size reported for one of its end member PbTiO3. With increased degree of clustering for the same average crystallite size, partial stabilization of the ferroelectric tetragonal phase takes place. The results suggest that clustering helps in reducing the depolarization energy without the need for increasing the crystallite size of free particles.

The impact of high enthalpy shock wave on graphitic carbon nanoparticle (GCNP) films has been investigated and discussed in view of space and chemical engineering applications. The GCNP films were developed by using spray method and exposed to high enthalpy shock wave under an inert atmosphere. Upon shock wave treatment, two typical amendments such as weight loss in the deposited material and growth of second order nanostructures (SONS) have been observed. While increasing test gas pressure, the loss of material and density of SONs are gradually increased. Most of the shock wave induced SONS are highly crystalline and belong to the cubic diamond structure. Upon shock treatment as well as with increase of test gas pressure, a considerable improvement in the quality of GCNP films has been observed. Further, ablation of GCNPs exclusively on the top surface of the coatings and formation of hierarchical NPs (diamond NPs on GCNPs) has been observed.

CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared by solution combustion method. The nanoparticle are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PXRD reveals single phase, cubic spinel structure with Fd (3) over barm (227) space group. SEM micrograph shows the particles are agglomerated and porous in nature. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal g=2.150 and is attributed to super exchange between Fe3+ and Co2+. Magnetization values of CoFe2O4 nanoparticle are lower when compared to the literature values of bulk samples. This can be attributed to the surface spin canting due to large surface-to-volume ratio for a nanoscale system. The variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss, loss tangent and AC conductivity of as-synthesized nano CoFe2O4 particles at room temperature as a function of frequency has been studied. The magnetic and dielectric properties of the samples show that they are suitable for electronic and biomedical applications.

In the present investigation, efforts were made to study the different frictional responses of materials with varying crystal structure and hardness during sliding against a relatively harder material of different surface textures and roughness. In the experiments, pins were made of pure metals and alloys with significantly different hardness values. Pure metals were selected based on different class of crystal structures, such as face centered cubic (FCC), body centered cubic (BCC), body centered tetragonal (BCT) and hexagonal close packed (HCP) structures. The surface textures with varying roughness were generated on the counterpart plate which was made of H-11 die steel. The experiments were conducted under dry and lubricated conditions using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester for various normal loads at ambient environment. In the experiments, it was found that the coefficient of friction is controlled by the surface texture of the harder mating surfaces. Further, two kinds of frictional response, namely steady-state and stick-slip, were observed during sliding. More specifically, stead-state frictional response was observed for the FCC metals, alloys and materials with higher hardness. Stick-slip frictional response was observed for the metals which have limited number of slip systems such as BCT and HCP. In addition, the stick-slip frictional response was dependent on the normal load, lubrication, hardness and surface texture of the counterpart material. However, for a given kind of surface texture, the roughness of the surface affects neither the average coefficient of friction nor the amplitude of stick-slip oscillation significantly.

The paper reports exchange-spring soft and hard ferrite nanocomposites synthesized by chemical co-precipitation with or without the application of ultrasonic vibration. The composites contained BaFe12O19 as the hard phase and CoFe2O4/MgFe2O4 as the soft phase. X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples in the optimum calcined condition indicated the presence of soft ferrites as face-centred cubic (fcc) and hard ferrites as hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure respectively. Temperature dependence of magnetization in the range of 20-700 degrees C demonstrated distinct presence of soft and hard ferrites as magnetic phases which are characterized by wide difference in magnetic anisotropy and coercivity. Exchange-spring mechanism led these nanocomposite systems to exchange-coupled, which ultimately produced convex hysteresis loops characteristic of a single-phase permanent magnet. Fairly high value of coercivity and maximum energy product were observed for the samples in the optimum calcined conditions with a maximum applied field of 1600 kA/m (2 T).
