New Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes [ML2] (HL = a substituted 2,5-dihydro-5-oxo-1H-pyrazolone-1-carbothioamide) have been synthesized by reacting K2MCl4 (M = Pd, Pt) or Pd(OAc)(2) with beta-ketoester thiosemicarbazones. The structures of seven of these complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction. Although all exhibit a distorted square-planar coordination with trans- or (in one case) cis-[MN2S2] kernels, their supramolecular arrangements vary widely from isolated molecules to 3D-networks. The in vitro antitumoral assays performed with two HL ligands and their metal complexes showed significant cytostatic activity for the latter, with the most active [ML2] derivative (a palladium complex) being about sixteen times more active than cis-DDP against the cis-platinum-resistant cell line A2780cisR. Complexes [RuCl(H4NO(2)Fo4M)(bipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (1), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Fo4M)(Mebipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (2), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Fo4M)(phen)(dppb)]PF(6) (3), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Ac4M)(bipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (4), [RuCl(H4NO(2)Ac4M)(Mebipy)(dppb)]PF(6) (5) and [RuCl(H4NO(2)Ac4M)(phen)(dppb)]PF(6) (6) with N(4)-methyl-4-nitrobenzalde hyde thiosemicarbazone (H4NO(2)Fo4M) and N(4)-methyl-4-nitroacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (H4NO(2) Ac4M) were obtained from [RuCl(2)(bipy)(dppb)], [RuCl(2)(Mebipy)(dppb)], and [RuCl(2)(phen)(dppb)], (dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphospine)butane; bipy = 2,2`-bipyridine: Mebipy = 4,4`-dimethyl-2,2`-bipyridine: phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). In all cases the thiosemicarbazone is attached to the metal center through the sulfur atom. Complexes (1-6), together with the corresponding ligands and the Ru precursors were evaluated for their ability to in vitro suppress the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi. All complexes were more active than their corresponding ligands and precursors. Complexes (1-3) and (5) revealed to be the most active among all studied compounds with ID(50) = 0.6-0.8 mu M. In all cases the association of the thiosemicarbazone with ruthenium, dppb and bipyridine or phenanthroline in one same complex proved to be an excellent strategy for activity improvement. Red, blue and green emitting rare earth compounds (RE(3+) = Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Tb(3+)) containing the benzenetricarboxylate ligands (BTC) [hemimellitic (EMA), trimellitic (TLA) and trimesic (TMA)] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration, X-ray diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complexes presented the following formula: [RE(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [RE(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [RE(TMA)(H(2)O)(G)], except for Tb-TMA compound, which was obtained only as anhydrous. Phosphorescence data of Gd(3+)-(BTC) complexes showed that the triplet states (T) of the BTC(3-) anions have energy higher than the main emitting states of the Eu(3+) ((5)D(0)) and Tb(3+) ((5)D(4)), indicating that BTC ligands can act as intramolecular energy donors for these metal ions. The high values of experimental intensity parameters (Omega(2)) of Eu(3+)-(BTC) complexes indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. Based on the luminescence spectra, the energy transfer from the T state of BTC ligands to the excited (5)D(0) and (5)D(4) levels of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions is discussed. The emission quantum efficiencies (eta) of the (5)D(0) emitting level of the Eu(3+) ion have been also determined. In the case of the Tb(3+) ion, the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) (J=0-6), indicating that the BTC ligands are good sensitizers. The RE(3+)-(BTC) complexes act as efficient light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) and can be used as tricolor luminescent materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The heteroaggregation behavior between a new class of nonplanar cationic beta-octabrominated meso-alkylpyridinium zinc(II)-porphyrins (beta-Br(8)(ZnP)) and anionic tetrasulfonated metallophthalocyanines (MTSPc, M = Ni(II) and Cu(II)) has been studied by UV-Vis electronic spectroscopy, in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The heteroaggregate stoichiometry and the association constants were determined by means of Job plots. Dimers and unexpected trimers, taking into account the existence of axially coordinated DMSO molecules to the central metal in both beta-Br(8)(ZnP) and MTSPc complexes, are formed in solution. The spectroscopic properties of the heteroaggregates are markedly different from those observed in the correspondent planar cationic derivatives, the heteroaggregates showing major changes predominantly in the beta-Br(8)(ZnP) Soret band region and minor effects in the MTSPc Q bands. The observed changes in the Soret band region (red/blue shifts, decrease in the absorption intensities) depend on the nature of the alkyl substituent attached to the meso-pyridinium group. The greater versatility of the nonplanar porphyrins accommodating the meso-substituents in out-of-plane and in-plane conformations is proposed to explain the observed stoichiometries and the differences on the heteroaggregates spectroscopic properties for each beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compound. The likely conformations assumed by the meso-substituents in these beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compounds and its spectroscopic characteristics are in accordance with the participation of the substituents as the main factor on the extent of the observed red-shifted spectra in nonplanar porphyrins. The obtained association constants (K(IP)) for the dimers and trimers are lower than those previously found for the similar planar cationic porphyrin systems, due to the lack of extensive pi-pi interactions and to the less effective approximation between the ionic groups, resulting in loosened heteroaggregates, particularly for the trimeric systems. Furthermore, the experimental results suggest that the NiTSPc is more distorted in DMSO solution than the CuTSPc derivative, favoring the interaction with the nonplanar beta-Br(8)(ZnP) compounds. The catalase mimetic complex Mn(III)-salen chloride (EUK8) was found to be pro-oxidant under low hydrogen peroxide concentrations. The increase in the fluorescence rate of the probe 1,2,3-dihydrorhodamine (DHR) in solution, as well as the carbonyl content of human serum albumin were found to be maximum at H(2)O(2):EUK8 molar ratios ranging from 0 to 2, supporting previous findings regarding the mechanism of EUK8 catalase activity and the formation of highly oxidative Mn(V)-O(2-) species. This pro-oxidant effect is precluded by the presence of glutathione. Cytotoxicity to HeLa cells, as probed by increased rate of oxidation of intracellular DHR, was not observed. Our findings suggest that the combination of H(2)O(2) and EUK8 at specific molar ratios, in the absence of reductants/antioxidants, induces the oxidation of organic molecules. It is shown that the fluorimetric determination of pro-oxidant activity of metal complexes is more sensitive than the colorimetric quantification of protein carbonyl content. The implications of our findings with respect to the somewhat confusing results arising from in vivo studies of EUK8 and other Mn(III) anti-oxidant metal complexes are discussed.

The coordination polymer [Cu(Pd(CN)(4))(pn)](n) (pn = 1,3-diaminopropane) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure showed that three cyano groups of each [Pd(CN)(4)] unit bridge Cu(II) centers leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network. A series of bifurcated hydrogen bonds between the amino groups of the diamine and the nonbridging cyano groups of the cyanometallate result in the organization of suprarnolecular chains and rings along the polymer. A novel tridentate thiosemicarbazide-type ligand class with an SNS donor set, H(2)L(1), was prepared by reactions of N-[N`,N`-dialkylamino(thiocarbonyl)]benzimidoyl chlorides with thiosemicarbazides. H(2)L(1) ligands readily react with (NBu(4))[TcOCl(4)] in MeOH under the formation of red oxotechnetium(V) complexes of composition [TcOCl(L(1))]. The monomeric, five-coordinate compounds are air-stable and bind (L(1))(2-) tridentate in the equatorial coordination sphere. The compounds represent the first examples of oxotechnetium(V) complexes with NS chelate-bonded thiosemicarbazones.

The ability of macroheterocyclic compounds to complex with ionic species has led to the synthesis and investigation of many multidentate macroheterocyclic species. The most stable complexes are formed between macrocyclic polyetheral ligands (crown ethers) with alkali or alkaline earth metal iona. There is an excellent correlation of the stability of these complexes with the size of the cation and the site of the cavity in the macrocyclic ligand. Additional factors, such as the basicity of the ligand and the solvating ability of the solvent, also play important roles in the stabilization of the complex. The stability of such complexes has been advantageously used to increase anionic reactivity and has been successfully applied to several organic fluorinations, oxidations, and similar reactions. The use of macrocyclic ligands in inorganic syntheses of otherwise difficult to obtain fluoro compounds has not been reported. O-carborane and m-carborane, C2BlOHl2, are icosahedral cage systems derived from Bl2H122- by replacement of BH with the isoelectronic CH group. These stable molecules exhibit electron-deficient bonding which can best be explained by delocalization of electrons. This delocalization gives rise to stability similar to that found in aromatic hydrocarbons. Crown ether activated potassium fluoride has been successfully employed in the conversion of alkyl, acyl and aryl halides to their respective fluorides. Analogously halide substituted carboranes were prepared, but their fluoro-derivatives were not obtained. The application of crown ethers in the synthesis of transition metal complexes is relatively unexplored. The usual synthesis of fluoro-derivative transition metal complexes involves highly reactive and toxic fluorinating agents such as antimony trifluoride, antimony penta fluoride. bromine trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride, An attempted preparation of the hexafluoroosmate (IV) ion via a crown activated, or naked fluoride~was unsuccessful. Potassium hexafluoroosmate (IV), K208F6. was eventually prepared using bromine trifluoride as a fluorinating and oxidizing agent .

Synthesis, characterization, DFT simulation and biological assays of two new metal complexes of 2-(2-thienyl)benzothiazole - BTT are reported. The complexes [Ag(BTT)(2)NO3] - AgBTT2 and [Au(BTT)Cl]center dot 1/2H(2)O - AuBTT were obtained by mixing the ligand with silver (I) nitrate or gold(I) chloride in methanolic solution. Characterization of the complexes were based on elemental (C, H, N and S), thermal (TG-DTA) analysis, C-13 and H-1 NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic measurements, as well as the X-ray structure determination for AgBTT2. Spectroscopic data predicted by DFT calculations were in agreement with the experimental data for both complexes. The ligand BTT was synthesized by the condensation of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminothiophenol in a microwave furnace. AgBTT2 has a monomeric structure. Both complexes show a good activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Free BIT shows low antitubercular activity. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new procedure was developed for the in situ characterization of the lability of metal species in aquatic systems by using a system equipped with a diffusion membrane and cellulose organomodified with p-aminobenzoic acid groups (DM-Cell-PAB). To this end, the DM-Cell-PAB system was prepared by adding cellulose organomodified with p-aminobenzoic acid groups (Cell-PAB) to pre-purified cellulose bags. After the DM-Cell-PAB system was sealed, it was examined in the laboratory to evaluate the influence of complexation time, mass of exchanger, pH, metal ions (Cu, Cd, Fe, Mn, and Ni), and concentration of organic matter on the relative lability of metal species. It was found that the pH and kinetics strongly influence the process of metal complexation by the DM-Cell-PAB system. At all pH levels, Cd, Mn, and Ni showed lower complexation with Cell-PAB resin than Cu and Fe metals. Note that relative lability of metals complexed to aquatic humic substances (AHS) in the presence of Cell-PAB resin showed the following order: Cu congruent to Fe >> Ni > Mn=Cd. The results presented here also indicate that increasing the AHS concentration decreases the lability of metal species by shifting the equilibrium to AHS-metal complexes. Our results indicate that the system under study offers an interesting alternative that can be applied to in situ experiments for differentiation of labile and inert metal species in aquatic systems.

Objectives: The objective of the present study was to evaluate a prefabricated intraradicular threaded pure titanium post, designed and developed at the Sao Jose dos Campos School of Dentistry - UNESP, Brazil. This new post was designed to minimize stresses observed with prefabricated post systems and to improve cost-benefits. Materials and and methods: Fracture resistance testing of the post/core/root complex, fracture analysis by microscopy and stress analysis by the finite element method were used for post evaluation. The following four prefabricated metal post systems were analyzed: group 1, experimental post; group 2, modification of the experimental post; group 3, Flexi Post, and group 4, Para Post. For the analysis of fracture resistance, 40 bovine teeth were randomly assigned to the four groups (n=10) and used for the fabrication of test specimens simulating the situation in the mouth. The test specimens were subjected to compressive strength testing until fracture in an EMIC universal testing machine. After fracture of the test specimens, their roots were sectioned and analyzed by microscopy. For the finite element method, specimens of the fracture resistance test were simulated by computer modeling to determine the stress distribution pattern in the post systems studied. Results: The fracture test presented the following averages and standard deviation: G1 (45.63 +/- 8.77), G2 (49.98 +/- 7.08), G3 (43.84 +/- 5.52), G4 (47.61 +/- 7.23). Stress was homogenously distributed along the body of the intraradicular post in group 1, whereas high stress concentrations in certain regions were observed in the other groups. These stress concentrations in the body of the post induced the same stress concentration in root dentin. Conclusions: The experimental post (original and modified versions) presented similar fracture resistance and better results in the stress analysis when compared with the commercial post systems tested (08/2008PA/CEP).

This work deals with the synthesis and thermal decomposition of complexes of general formula: Ln(beta-dik)(3)L (where Ln=Tb(+3), beta-dik=4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3butanedione(btfa) and L=1,10-fenantroline(phen) or 2,2-bipiridine(bipy). The powders were characterized by melting point, FTIR spectroscopy, LTV-visible, elemental analysis, scanning differential calorimeter(DSC) and thermogravimetry(TG). The TG/DSC curves were obtained simultaneously in a system DSC-TGA, under nitrogen atmosphere. The experimental conditions were: 0.83 ml.s(-1) carrier gas flow, 2.0 +/- 0.5 mg samples and 10 degrees C.min(-1) heating rate. The CHN elemental analysis of the Tb(btfa)(3)bipy and Tb(btfa)(3)phen complexes, are in good agreement with the expected values. The IR spectra evinced that the metal ion is coordinated to the ligands via C=O and C-N groups. The TG/DTG/DSC curves of the complexes show that they decompose before melting. The profiles of the thermal decomposition of the Tb(btfa)3phen and Tb(btfa)3bipy showed six and five decomposition stages, respectively. Our data suggests that the thermal stability of the complexes under investigation followed the order: Tb(btfa)(3)phen < Tb(btfa)(3)bipy.
