Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies have been carried out at room temperature in 25 R2O-25 GeO2-49.5 B2O3-0.5 Nd2O3 glass systems, (Composition in mol%, R= Li, Na, K and Rb). Judd Ofelt Intensity parameters and other parameters like Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), Slater-Condon-Shortley (F-2, F-4 and F-6) Spin-Orbit Coupling (xi(4f)) and Configuration Interaction (alpha, beta and gamma) for Nd3+ ion in the glass system are calculated. The variation of the 02 parameters are interpreted in terms of the covalency of the RE ion in the glass matrix. Further the hypersensitive transition I-4(9/2) -> (4)G(5/2), (2)G(7/2) is analyzed with respect to the intensity ratio I-L/I-S and is found to be dependent on the type of alkali in the glass matrix. The Photoluminescence studies do not show any appreciable shift in the peak emission wavelength of the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition with the change in alkali type. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We present the magnetic properties of polycrystalline Dy1−xSrxMnO3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) with an orthorhombic (o) crystal structure. The parent compound, o-DyMnO3, undergoes an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn spins at 39 K, followed by a spiral order at 18 K. A further antiferromagnetic transition at 5 K marks an ordering of the Dy-sublattice. Doping of divalent Sr ions results in diverse magnetization phenomena. The zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization curves display the presence of strongly interacting magnetic sublattices. For x = 0.1 and 0.2, a bifurcation between the ZFC and FC magnetization sets in at around 30 and 32 K, respectively. The ZFC magnetization peaks at about 5 K, indicating antiferromagnetic Dy-couplings similar to the case of o-DyMnO3. For x = 0.3, clear signatures of ferrimagnetism and strong anisotropy are found, including negative magnetization. The compound with x = 0.4 behaves as a spin glass, similar to Dy0.5Sr0.5MnO3.

Ga and In co-doped ZnO (GIZO) thin films together with ZnO, In-doped ZnO (IZO), Ga-doped ZnO (GZO), and IZO/GZO multilayer for comparison, were grown on corning glass and boron doped Si substrates by PLD. The photoluminescence spectra of GIZO showed a strong white light emission and the current-voltage characteristics showed relatively lower turn-on voltage and larger forward current. The CIE coordinates for GIZO were observed to be (0.31, 0.33) with a correlated colour temperature of 6650 K, indicating a cool white light, and establishing a possibility of white light emitting diodes. Metal-ion- (Ag, Co, Ni and Pd) doped titania nanocatalysts were successfully deposited on glass slides by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using a poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polyelectrolyte system. Solid diffuse reflectance (SDR) studies showed a linear increase in absorbance at 416 nm with increase in the number of m-TiO2 thin films. The LbL assembled thin films were tested for their photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. From the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thin films had a porous morphology and the atomic force microscope (AFM) studies showed ``rough'' surfaces. The porous and rough surface morphology resulted in high surface areas hence the high photocatalytic degradation (up to 97% over a 6.5 h irradiation period) using visible-light observed. Increasing the number of multilayers deposited on the glass slides resulted in increased film thickness and an increased rate of photodegradation due to increase in the availability of more nanocatalysts (more sites for photodegradation). The LbL assembled thin films had strong adhesion properties which made them highly stable thus displaying the same efficiencies after five (5) reusability cycles.

We report on the substrate assisted doping of ZnO nanowires grown by a vapor transport technique. The nanowires were grown non-catalytically on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and soda lime glass (SLG). Carbon from MWCNTs and sodium from SLG diffuse into ZnO during the growth and are distributed uniformly and provide doping. An advantage associated with the technique is that no conventional external dopant source is required to obtain doped ZnO nanowires. The diameter, length and hence the aspect ratio can easily be varied by changing the growth conditions. The transport studies on both carbon and sodium doped ZnO support the p-type nature of ZnO. The p-type nature of carbon doped ZnO is stable for at least eight months.

Pure and cadmium doped tin oxide thin films were deposited on glass substrates from aqueous solution of cadmium acetate, tin (IV) chloride and sodium hydroxide by the nebulizer spray pyrolysis (NSP) technique. X-ray diffraction reveals that all films have tetragonal crystalline structure with preferential orientation along (200) plane. On application of the Scherrer formula, it is found that the maximum size of grains is 67 nm. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the grains are of rod and spherical in shape. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis reveals the average ratio of the atomic percentage of pure and Cd doped SnO2 films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(2) Omega cm at higher temperature (170 degrees C) and 10(3) Omega cm at lower temperature (30 degrees C). Optical band gap energy was determined from transmittance and absorbance data obtained from UV-vis spectra. Optical studies reveal that the band gap energy decreases from 3.90 eV to 3.52 eV due to the addition of Cd as dopant with different concentrations.

Sodium doped zinc oxide (Na:ZnO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates at substrate temperatures 300,400 and 500 degrees C by a novel nebulizer spray method. X-ray diffraction shows that all the films are polycrystalline in nature having hexagonal structure with high preferential orientation along (0 0 2) plane. High resolution SEM studies reveal the formation of Na-doped ZnO films having uniformly distributed nano-rods over the entire surface of the substrates at 400 degrees C. The complex impedance of the ZnO nano-rods shows two distinguished semicircles and the diameter of the arcs got decreased in diameter as the temperature increases from 170 to 270 degrees C and thereafter slightly increased. TiO2 thin films with 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.6 wt%, and 0.8 wt% Fe were prepared on glass and silicon substrates using sol-gel spin coating technique. The optical cut-off points are increasingly red-shifted and the absorption edge is shifted over the higher wavelength region with Fe content increasing. As Fe content increases, the optical band gap decreases from 3.03 to 2.48 eV whereas the tail width increases from 0.26 to 1.43 eV. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for doped films at 0.2 wt% and 0.8 wt% Fe reveal no characteristic peaks, indicating that the film is amorphous whereas undoped TiO2 exhibits (101) orientation with anatase phase. Thin films of higher Fe content exhibit a homogeneous, uniform, and nano-structured highly porous shell morphology.

The present study discusses the photosensitivity of GeS2 chalcogenide glass in response to irradiation with femtosecond pulses at 1047 nm. Bulk GeS2 glasses are prepared by conventional melt quenching technique and the amorphous nature of the glass is confirmed using X-ray diffraction. Ultrafast laser inscription technique is used to fabricate the straight channel waveguides in the glass. Single scan and multi scan waveguides are inscribed in GeS2 glasses of length 0.65 cm using a master oscillator power amplifier Yb doped fiber laser (IMRA mu jewel D400) with different pulse energy and translation speed. Diameters of the inscribed waveguides are measured and its dependence on the inscription parameters such as translation speed and pulse energy is studied. Butt coupling method is used to characterize the loss measurement of the inscribed optical waveguides. The mode field image of the waveguides is captured using CCD camera and compared with the mode field image of a standard SMF-28 fibers.

The influence of substitution of Bi atom instead of S atoms on the structural and optical properties of thin films of As40S60 are reported. The density is found to be increased with the addition Bi heavy metal into As2S3. The amorphous to polycrystalline structure of the bulk sample is observed for Bi more than 7%. The glass transition temperature is found to be decreased with addition of Bi. The absorption edge shifts to shorter wavelength, thereby decreasing optical band gap of BixAs(40)S(60-x) (x= 0,2 and 4% here) film. The optical parameter change is discussed from the stand point of chemical bonds formed in the films and related to the defect states produced due to incorporation of Bi atoms in place of chalcogenide S atoms.

This work describes the deposition, annealing and characterisation of semi-insulating oxygen-doped silicon films at temperatures compatible with polysilicon circuitry on glass. The semi-insulating layers are deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique from silane (SiH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and helium (He) gas mixtures at a temperature of 350 °C. The as-deposited films are then furnace annealed at 600 °C which is the maximum process temperature. Raman analysis shows the as-deposited and annealed films to be completely amorphous. The most important deposition variable is the N2O SiH4 gas ratio. By varying the N2O SiH4 ratio the conductivity of the annealed films can be accurately controlled, for the first time, down to a minimum of ≈10-7Ω-1cm-1 where they exhibit a T -1 4 temperature dependence indicative of a hopping conduction mechanism. Helium dilution of the reactant gases is shown to improve both film uniformity and reproducibility. A model for the microstructure of these semi-insulating amorphous oxygen-doped silicon films is proposed to explain the observed physical and electrical properties. © 1995.

This work describes the annealing and characterisation of semi-insulating oxygen-doped silicon films deposited by the Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) technique from silane (SiH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and helium (He) gas mixtures. The maximum process temperature is chosen to be compatible with large area polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) circuitry on glass. The most important deposition variable is shown to be the N2O SiH4 gas ratio. Helium dilution results in improved film uniformity and reproducibility. Bi-doped BaF2 crystal was grown by the temperature gradient technique and its spectral properties were investigated. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra were measured at room temperature. Two broadband emissions centered at 1070 and 1500 nm were observed in Bi-doped BaF2 crystal. This extraordinary luminescence should be ascribed to Bi-related centers at distinct sites. We suggest Bi2+ or Bi+ centers adjacent to F vacancy defects are the origins of the observed NIR emissions. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America
