In this paper, we review our recent experimental work on coherent and blue phase liquid crystal lasers. We will present results on thin-film photonic band edge lasing devices using dye-doped low molar mass liquid crystals in self-organised chiral nematic and blue phases. We show that high Q-factor lasers can be achieved in these materials and demonstrate that a single mode output with a very narrow line width can be readily achievable in well-aligned mono-domain samples. Further, we have found that the performance of the laser, i.e. the slope efficiency and the excitation threshold, are dependent upon the physical parameters of the low molar mass chiral nematic liquid crystals. Specifically, slope efficiencies greater than 60% could be achieved depending upon the materials used and the device geometry employed. We will discuss the important parameters of the liquid crystal host/dye guest materials and device configuration that are needed to achieve such high slope efficiencies. Further we demonstrate how the wavelength of the laser can be tuned using an in-plane electric field in a direction perpendicular to the helix axis via a flexoelectric mechanism as well as thermally using thermochromic effects. We will then briefly outline data on room temperature blue phase lasers and further show how liquid crystal/lenslet arrays have been used to demonstrate 2D laser emission of any desired wavelength. Finally, we present preliminary data on LED/incoherent pumping of RG liquid crystal lasers leading to a continuous wave output. © 2009 SPIE.

We report selective tunnelling through a nanographene intermolecular tunnel junction achieved via scanning tunnelling microscope tip functionalization with hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) molecules. This leads to an offset in the alignment between the energy levels of the tip and the molecular assembly, resulting in the imaging of a variety of distinct charge density patterns in the HBC assembly, not attainable using a bare metallic tip. Different tunnelling channels can be selected by the application of an electric field in the tunnelling junction, which changes the condition of the HBC on the tip. Density functional theory-based calculations relate the imaged HBC patterns to the calculated molecular orbitals at certain energy levels. These patterns bear a close resemblance to the π-orbital states of the HBC molecule calculated at the relevant energy levels, mainly below the Fermi energy of HBC. This correlation demonstrates the ability of an HBC functionalized tip as regards accessing an energy range that is restricted to the usual operating bias range around the Fermi energy with a normal metallic tip at room temperature. Apart from relating to molecular orbitals, some patterns could also be described in association with the Clar aromatic sextet formula. Our observations may help pave the way towards the possibility of controlling charge transport between organic interfaces.

Mixtures of two proprietary low molar mass organosiloxane liquid crystals were studied in order to improve their alignment and optimize their electro-optic properties for telecommunication applications. Over a certain concentration range, mixtures exhibited an isotropic-chiral smectic A-chiral smectic C (Iso-SmA*-SmC*) phase sequence leading to exceptionally good alignment. At room temperature, the spontaneous polarization of these samples was reduced from 225 nC cm -2 in the pure SmC* liquid crystal to as low as 75 nC cm -2 in the mixture. Within this concentration range, the ferroelectric tilt angle could be varied between 35° and 15°, while the rise time decreased by 69.4%. The rise times were < 45 μs for moderate electric fields of ± 10 V μm -1 in the SmC* phase and ∼ 4 μs, independent of electric field, in the SmA* phase. At λ = 1550 nm, these mixtures exhibited very large extinction ratios of {\sim} 60 dB for binary switching in the SmC* phase and ∼ 55 dB continuous variable attenuation in the SmA* phase. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we present planar mesa termination structure with high k dielectric Al2O3 for high-voltage diamond Schottky barrier diode. Analysis, design, and optimization are carried out by simulations using finite element technology computer-aided design (TCAD) Sentaurus Device software. The performances of planar mesa termination structure are compared to those of conventional field plate termination structure. It is found that optimum geometry of planar mesa terminated diode requires shorter metal plate extension (1/3 of the field plate terminated diode). Consequently, planar mesa terminated diode can be designed with bigger Schottky contact to increase its current carrying capability. Breakdown performance of field plate termination structure is limited at 1480 V due to peak electric field at the corner of Schottky contact (no oxide breakdown occurs). In contrast, peak electric field in planar mesa termination structure only occurs in the field oxide such that its breakdown performance is highly dependent on the oxide material. Due to Al2O3 breakdown, planar mesa termination structure suffers premature breakdown at 1440 V. Considering no oxide breakdown occurs, planar mesa termination structure can realize higher breakdown voltage of 1751 V. Therefore, to fully realize the potential of planar mesa terminated diode, it is important to choose suitable high k dielectric material with sufficient breakdown electric field for the field oxide. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Some members of hairy/Enhancer-of-split-related gene (HES) family have important effects on axial mesoderm segmentation and the establishment and maintenance of the somite fringe. In fishes. the her6 gene, a member of the HES family, is the homologue Of heS1 in mammals and chicken. In this study, the her6 gene and its full-length cDNA from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were isolated and characterized. The genomic sequence of common carp her6 is approximately 1.7 kb. with four exons and three introns, and the full-length cDNA of 1314 bp encodes a Putative polypeptide of 271 amino acids. To analyse the promoter sequence of common carp her6. sequences of various lengths upstream from the transcription initiation site of her6 were fused to enhanced green fluorescent. protein gene (eGFP) and introduced into zebrafish embryos by microinjection to generate transgenic embryos. Our results show that the upstream sequence of 500 bp can direct highly efficient and tissue-specific expression of eGFP in zebrafish embryos. whereas a fragment of 200 bp containing the TATA box and a partial suppressor of hairless paired site sequence (SPS) is not sufficient to drive eGFP expression in zebrafish embryos.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB)-induced oxidative damages have been published in rats while the effects have not yet been reported in fishes. Juvenile common carps (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to waterborne HCB from 2 to 200 mu g l(-1) for 5, 10 or 20 days. Liver and brain were analyzed for various parameters of oxidative stress. There were no significant changes of glutathione (GSH) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in liver after 5 or 10 days exposure, whereas obvious drops were observed at higher concentrations after 20 days exposure. Significant decreases of GSH content and SOD activity in brain were found during all the exposure days. In brain, HCB also significantly elevated the contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS, as an indicator of lipid peroxidation products), glutathione disulfide (GSSG), and activities of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR), and inhibited activities of acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). The results clearly demonstrated that environmentally possible level of HCB could result in oxidative stress in fish and brain was a sensitive target organ of HCB toxicity. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 2 binding protein (T2BP) gene was isolated from the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) by utilizing suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The grass carp T2BP (GT2BP) gene contains an open reading frame of 579 nucleotide(s) (nt), encoding 193 amino acids, with 23 nt 5'-untranslated region and a long 3'-untranslated region of 434 nt including poly (A), 1 AUUUA motif and 4 AUUUUA motifs. No signal peptide has been detected in the predicted GT2BP, but a characteristic forkhead associated domain is present. The GT2BP mRNA shares 83% identity with the zebrafish DNA sequence, and they both have no introns in the genomic DNA. The putative transcription factor binding sites of GT2BP include two C/EBP alpha binding sites, and one c-Jun binding, one AP-1 binding, and one nuclear factor kappa B (NF kappa B) binding sites. Southern blot analysis revealed that the GT2BP was a single-copy gene. Individual difference was observed in GT2BP expression in examined organs of healthy grass carp. However, the expression of GT2BP in all examined organs in a fish with the highest copepod infection level and the significantly higher expression level in spleen and liver in infected fish may indicate its up-regulation with the parasite infection. We compare the performance of a typical hole transport layer for organic photovoltaics (OPVs), Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thin film with a series of PEDOT:PSS layers doped with silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) of various size distributions. These hybrid layers have attracted great attention as buffer layers in plasmonic OPVs, although there is no report up to date on their isolated performance. In the present study we prepared a series of PEDOT:PSS layers sandwiched between indium tin oxide (ITO) and gold (Au) electrodes. Ag NPs were deposited on top of the ITO by electron beam evaporation followed by spin coating of PEDOT:PSS. Electrical characterization performed in the dark showed linear resistive behavior for all the samples; lower resistance was observed for the hybrid ones. It was found that the resistivity of the samples decreases with increasing the particle's size. A substantial increase of the electric field between the ITO and the Au electrodes was seen through the formation of current paths through the Ag NPs. A striking observation is the slight increase in the slope of the current density versus voltage curves when measured under illumination for the case of the plasmonic layers, indicating that changes in the electric field in the vicinity of the NP due to plasmonic excitation is a non-vanishing factor. © 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V. Some integrated optics devices can be made based on the interdigital electro-optic Bragg diffraction grating. The point-matching method is extended to the analysis of interdigital electro-optic Bragg diffraction gratings. This method provides a simple and fast analytic expression of the electric field in the structure. The field distributions are used to calculate the optical and electrical characteristic parameters of the gratings. The effects of finite conductor thickness have been taken into account in the analysis. It is shown that the simulation results agree well with the measured data.

Quantum-confined Stark effects in GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs self-assembled quantum dots are investigated theoretically in the framework of effective-mass envelope function theory. The electron and hole energy levels and optical transition energies are calculated in the presence of an electric field in different directions. In our calculation, the effect of finite offset, valence-band mixing, the effects due to the different effective masses of electrons and holes in different regions, and the real quantum dot structures are all taken into account. The results show that the electron and hole energy levels and the optical transition energies can cause blueshifts when the electric field is applied along the opposite to the growth direction. Our calculated results are useful for the application of hierarchical self-assembly of GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum dots to photoelectric devices. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Complex Fourier transformation (CFT) has been employed to analyse contactless electroreflectance (CER) spectra from an undoped-n(+) GaAs structure with various ac modulations and dc bias voltages. The CFT spectra of CER have been compared with those of photoreflectance (PR). It has been found that the CER non-flat modulation is between the built-in electric field and a larger electric field which increases with the modulation voltage. The result has been explained by the screening of the applied modulation electric field in one of the two half modulation cycles and the trapping of electrons in surface states in the other half modulation cycle. The dc bias does not change the CER spectra, hence their CFT spectra. This is because of the screening of the applied dc bias electric field.

The relations between the gain factor, defined as the ratio of modal gain to material gain, and the optical confinement factor are discussed for the TE and TM modes in slab waveguides. For the TE modes, the gain factor is larger than the optical confinement factor, due to the zigzag propagation of the modal light ray in the core layers. For the TM modes, the existence of a nonzero electric field in the propagation direction results in a more complicated relation of the gain factor and the confinement factor. For an air-Si-SiO2 strong slab waveguide, the numerical results show that the modal gain can be larger than the material gain and the higher-order transverse mode can have an even larger modal gain than the fundamental mode, The efficiency of waveguiding photodetectors can be improved by applying the modal gain or loss characteristics in strong waveguides.

Quantum-confined Stark effects in InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots are investigated theoretically in the framework of effective-mass envelope function theory. The electron and hole energy levels and optical transition energies are calculated in the presence of perpendicular and parallel electric field. In our calculation, the effect of finite offset, valence band mixing, and strain are all taken into account. The results show that the perpendicular electric field weakly affects the electron ground state and hole energy levels. The energy levels are affected strongly by the parallel electric field. For the electron, the energy difference between the ground state and the first excited state decreases as electric field increases. The optical transition energies have clear redshifts in electric field. The theoretical results agree well with the available experimental data. Our calculated results are useful for the application of quantum dots to photoelectric devices. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(00)11001-7].

A radially polarized beam focused by a high-numerical-aperture (NA) objective has a strong longitudinal and nonpropagating electric field in the focal region, which implies that it is suitable for axial optical trapping. In this paper, we use the vectorial diffraction integral to represent the field distribution of the radially polarized beam focused by a high-NA objective and then employ the T-matrix method to compute the radiation forces on spherical particles. Effects of different parameters, such as the size of the sphere, the inner radius of the radially polarized beam, and the NA of the objective, on the radiation forces are presented.

It is well known that atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature are increasing as a consequence of human activities. Atmospheric CO2 concentration are predicted to increase from 350μmol·mol-1 now to 570μmol·mol-1 2030. And temperature will continue to increase for several centuries as a result of CO2 enrichment. Vegetation play a key role in reducing atmospheric CO2 and adapting and controlling warter and energy process in a certain region, while the underlying mechanism are not clear, yet. Betula albo-sinensis, as the dominating tree species of subalpine dark coniferous forest in west Sichuan province, play an important role in determing structure and function of forest ecosystem. In our study, effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (ambient±350±25μmol·mol-1), increased temperature (ambient±2.0±0.5℃) and their combination on contents and allocation of soluble protein were studied in independent and enclosed-top chamber system under high-frigid conditions. Chambers with ambient CO2 concentration and temperature are taken as control. The results are as the following, 1) Elevated atmospheric CO2 increased the accumulation of total weight of soluble protein in whole plant and changed allocation of soluble protein in red birch by increasing its allocation to roots and reducing its allocation to stem. This caused much more accumulation of soluble protein in roots which might help to prompt growth, development and nutrient absorption ability of roots. 2) Treatment EC increased content of albumin in roots and stems, reduced the content of albumin in leaves, and increased the content of globulin, promalin and glutenin in leaves. That is to say EC increased the accumulation of albumin in roots and accumulation of globulin, promalin and glutenin in leaves. The reduced soluble protein contents in plant leaves by EC, as reported by former researchers, are mainly resulted from the reduced content of albumin in leaves. 3) Elevated temperature increased the total of soluble proteins, but its allocation was dependent on organs. In treatment ET, roots, stems, leaves and branches take 27.74%, 35.57%, 23.00% and 13.68% of total weight of soluble protein. In treatment CK, roots, stems, leaves and branches take 21.01%, 41.41%, 23.08% and 14.50%. Elevated temperature changed allocation of soluble proteins in that it stimulated soluble proteins accumulation in roots and improved the uptake of water in roots. 4) Treatment ET increased the content of albumin and globulin in roots, and reduced the content of albumin and globulin in stems, leaves and branches. The content of promalin in roots and leaves was increased significantly, and the content of glutenin in stems was reduced significant. This suggested that ET stimulated the accumulation of albumin and globulin in roots and accumulation of promalin in leaves and roots; that treatment ET increased content of soluble protein in leaves was mainly resulted from the increased promalin content in leaves. 5) Regarding treatment ETC, the total of weight of soluble proteins increased, but not significantly; but increased in stems. So the combination of elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature had not changed the allocation of soluble proteins in red birch seedling and reduced soluble proteins in branches were not the result of increased carbohydrate. 6) Treatment ETC reduced the content of albumin and promalin in roots, stems, leaves and branches, reduced the content of globulin and glutenin in roots significantly. That is to say elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature reduced the content of soluble proteins in roots significantly which might help to prompt growth, development and nutrient absorption ability of roots. 7) The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature on soluble protein cannot be simply interpreted through their mechanism that obtained when they were imposed on plant separately.
