The PtRu/C electrocatalyst with high loading (PtRu of 60 wt%) was prepared by synergetic effect of ultrasonic radiation and mechanical stirring. Physicochemical characterizations show that the size of PtRu particles of as-prepared PtRu/C catalyst is only several nanometers (2-4 nm), and the PtRu nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed on carbon surface. Electrochemistry and single passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) tests indicate that the as-prepared PtRu/C electrocatalyst possessed larger electrochemical active surface (EAS) area and enhanced electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The enhancement could be attributed to the synergetic effect of ultrasound radiation and mechanical stirring, which can avoid excess concentration of partial solution and provide a uniform environment for the nucleation and growth of metal particles simultaneously hindering the agglomeration of PtRu particles on carbon surface.

The electrochemistry of cytochrome c was studied at the PVP-modified gold electrode. It was found that the promoter effect is related to the amount of PVP at the gold electrode. From our results, it can be seen that the nitrogen element in the polymer is important for accelerating the electron transfer of cytochrome c.

The promoter effect of halogen anions for heterogeneous electron transfer between cytochrome c and a gold electrode was studied. It was found that the order of the promoter ability of halogen anions is I- > Br- > Cl- > F-. In addition, factors which can affect the promoter effect were discussed.

The selective oxidation of ethylene to acetic acid was investigated on Pd-acid/support catalyst system. The catalytic activity is influenced strongly by the acidity of the catalyst. The stronger the catalyst acidity the higher the catalytic activity. The nature of the support also influences the activity of the catalyst substantially. The catalyst has highest activity when it exhibits highest acidity on silica.

Transient overexpression of defined combinations of master regulator genes can effectively induce cellular reprogramming: the acquisition of an alternative predicted phenotype from a differentiated cell lineage. This can be of particular importance in cardiac regenerative medicine wherein the heart lacks the capacity to heal itself, but simultaneously contains a large pool of fibroblasts. In this study we determined the cardio-inducing capacity of ten transcription factors to actuate cellular reprogramming of mouse embryonic fibroblasts into cardiomyocyte-like cells. Overexpression of transcription factors MYOCD and SRF alone or in conjunction with Mesp1 and SMARCD3 enhanced the basal but necessary cardio-inducing effect of the previously reported GATA4, TBX5, and MEF2C. In particular, combinations of five or seven transcription factors enhanced the activation of cardiac reporter vectors, and induced an upregulation of cardiac-specific genes. Global gene expression analysis also demonstrated a significantly greater cardio-inducing effect when the transcription factors MYOCD and SRF were used. Detection of cross-striated cells was highly dependent on the cell culture conditions and was enhanced by the addition of valproic acid and JAK inhibitor. Although we detected Ca(2+) transient oscillations in the reprogrammed cells, we did not detect significant changes in resting membrane potential or spontaneously contracting cells. This study further elucidates the cardio-inducing effect of the transcriptional networks involved in cardiac cellular reprogramming, contributing to the ongoing rational design of a robust protocol required for cardiac regenerative therapies.

The Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect is believed to alter the spin states of small bodies in the solar system. However, evidence for the effect has so far been indirect. Here we report precise optical photometric and radar observations acquired over four years of a small near-Earth asteroid (54509) 2000 PH5. We find the asteroid has been continuously increasing its rotation rate omega over this period by domega/dt = (2.0+/- 0.2) x 10-4 deg/day2. We simulated the close Earth approaches from 2001-2005, showing that gravitational torques cannot explain the observed spin-rate increase. Dynamical simulations also suggest that 2000 PH5 may reach a rotation period of ~20 seconds towards the end of its expected lifetime

Bystander responses underlie some of the current efforts to develop gene therapy approaches for cancer treatment. Similarly, they may have a role in strategies to treat tumours with targeted radioisotopes. In this study we show direct evidence for the production of a radiation-induced bystander response in primary human fibroblasts, We utilize a novel approach of using a charged-particle microbeam, which allows individual cells within a population to be selected and targeted with counted charged particles. Individual primary human fibroblasts within a population of 600-800 cells were targeted with between 1 and 15 helium ions (effectively, alpha -particles). The charged particles were delivered through the centre of the nucleus with an accuracy of +/- 2 mum and a detection and counting efficiency of greater than 99%. When scored 3 days later, even though only a single cell had been targeted, typically an additional 80-100 damaged cells were observed in the surviving population of about 5000 cells. The yield of damaged cells was independent of the number of charged particles delivered to the targeted cell, Similar results of a 2-3-fold increase in the background level of damage present in the population were observed whether 1 or 4 cells were targeted within the dish. Also, when 200 cells within one quadrant of the dish were exposed to radiation, there was a 2-3-fold increase in the damage level in an unexposed quadrant of the dish, This effect was independent of the presence of serum in the culture medium and was only observed when a cell was targeted, but not when only the medium was exposed, confirming that a cell-mediated response is involved. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of root surface iron plaque on the uptake kinetics of arsenite and arsenate by excised roots of rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings. The results demonstrated that the presence of iron plaque enhanced arsenite and decreased arsenate uptake. Arsenite and arsenate uptake kinetics were adequately fitted by the Michaelis-Menten function in the absence of plaque, but produced poor fits to this function in the presence of plaque. Phosphate in the uptake solution did not have a significant effect on arsenite uptake irrespective of the presence of iron plaque; however phosphate had a significant effect on arsenate uptake. Without iron plaque, phosphate inhibited arsenate uptake. The presence of iron plaque diminished the effect of phosphate on arsenate uptake, possibly through a combined effect of arsenate desorption from iron plaque.
