On the occasion of the recent death of the madrilenian culture historian Vicente Cacho Viu, the authors expose the main lines of his historical work. They point out the importance of Cacho's research on the periord of the Restauración, mainly his studies on the liberal education institution Institución Libre de Enseñanza. They also consider Cacho's interest in Catalonia, remembering the time he spent teaching at Barcelona University, paying attention to his works on catalan modernisme. The article includes a systematic bibliography of Cacho's works.

El text presenta la important tasca de Joan Estelrich en projectar el problema nacional català a l'estranger entre els anys 1919-1926. Se subratlla l'empenta que dóna a la traducció d'obres de la cultura catalana en altres idiomes i especialment a l'italià. En aquest marc s'expliquen les relacions entre aquest intel·lectual català i l'italià Cesare Giardini. Seguint l'epistolari inèdit entre els dos, el text explica els rerefons en què es va fer la traducció de dos obres significatives com La nacionalitat catalana d'Enric Prat de la Riba i Entorn del feixisme italià de Francesc Cambó. En aquest marc, el text reflexiona i critica les interpretacions historiogràfiques que han llegit l'experiència de Cambó com la d'un autor proper al feixisme.

A finales de 1909, coincidiendo con el intento de procurar unas raíces clásicas a la lengua y literatura catalanas, Lluís Segalà i Estalella pedirá al poeta Joan Maragall su colaboración en la traducción y versificación en catalán de la Olímpica primera de Píndaro. Para ello, uno de sus alumnos, Pedro Bosch Gimpera, trabajará junto al poeta dando así inicio a una corta pero intensa relación de amistad y magisterio que tendrá su más perdurable expresión en la traducción y versificación de los Himnos homéricos. Escogida por la recién creada Sección Filológica del IEC como una obra emblemática para la difusión de las normas que debían regular el uso escrito del catalán, la edición sufrirá diversos avatares motivados por las divergencias surgidas entre Segalà y Bosch, así como por el apoyo que Maragall brindará a su joven amigo hasta su muerte en 1911. Reconstruida a partir de la correspondencia personal, la historia de la edición de los Himnos homéricos supone una aproximación a la figura de Bosch en la época en que la filología y la religión griegas constituían su objetivo de investigación, substituidas poco después por la prehistoria y la arqueología.

Se ha estudiado la flora algal del Canal de Piragüismo de Aguas Tranquilas durante un año. Se han identificado 90 taxa (20 Cyanophyta, 25 Chlorophyta , 1 Charophyta, 9 Euglenophyta, 31Chrysophyta, 2 Cryptophyta y 2 Pirrophyta). Se aportan datos morfométricos, descripciones y fotografías de microscopio óptico de algunas de las especies. También se incluyen fotografías de diatomeas realizadas al microscopio electrónico de barrido. Se comentan los cambios observados en la composición florística en relación con la mejora de la calidad del agua del canal. También se discute el efecto del progresivo incremento de salinidad del agua sobre las poblaciones de diatomeas.

For more than 80 years, visitors to the Iowa State Historical, Memorial, and Art Building were treated to the state’s collection of historic documents, literature, portraits, and historical, geological, and archeological artifacts. Those who visited might have memories of the spectacular sand paintings by Iowan Andrew Clemens, the variety of taxidermy Iowa animals, the pioneer Conestoga wagon in the basement, the biplane hanging from the dome ceiling, the odd display by the medical library of things removed from stomachs, or the Native American display on the third floor. This booklet is a look back at the origins of the museum. It includes some of the Historical Department reports, legislation passed by the general assembly, newspaper and magazine articles, and photographs pertaining to the museum and library. It is not intended to be an exhaustive review and documentation of displays and exhibits. It is a brief overview of the building’s history and some photographs that may bring back memories, for some, of a field trip as a student. This booklet has been created from a variety of source materials: photographs, newspaper articles, and various reports. The following have contributed: State Library of Iowa, Iowa State Historical Society, the Iowa Judicial Branch, Susan Wallace, Helen Dagley, Barb Corson, Jerome Thompson, Pam Rees, Georgiann Fischer, and Jason Mrachina.

Removal of ice from roads is of the more challenging task in winter highway maintenance. The best mechanical method is to use a truck with underbody plow blade, but such equipment is not available to all agencies charged with winter maintenance operations. While counties and cities often use motor graders to scrape ice, it would be of great benefit if front mounted plows could be used effectively for ice removal. To reveal and understand the factors that influence the performance of these plows, measurement of the forces experienced by the plow blades during ice scraping is desirable. This study explores the possibility of using accelerometers to determine the forces on a front-mounted plow when scraping ice. The plow was modeled by using a dynamic approach. The forces on the plow were to be determined by the measurement of the accelerations of the plow. Field tests were conducted using an "as is" front-mounted plow instrumented with accelerometers. The results of the field tests indicate that in terms of ice removal, the front-mounted plow is not favorable equipment. The major problem in this study is that the front mounted plow was not able to cut ice, and therefore experienced no significant scraping forces. However, the use of accelerometers seems to be promising for analyzing the vibration problems of the front-mounted plow.

Recent reports have indicated that 23.5% of the nation's highway bridges are structurally deficient and 17.7% are functionally obsolete. A significant number of these bridges are on the Iowa secondary road system where over 86% of the rural bridge management responsibilities are assigned to the counties. Some of the bridges can be strengthened or otherwise rehabilitated, but many more are in need of immediate replacement. In a recent investigation (HR-365 "Evaluation of Bridge Replacement Alternatives for the County Bridge System") several types of replacement bridges that are currently being used on low volume roads were identified. It was also determined that a large number of counties (69%) have the ability and are interested in utilizing their own forces to design and construct short span bridges. In reviewing the results from HR-365, the research team developed one "new" bridge replacement concept and a modification of a replacement system currently being used. Both of these bridge replacement alternatives were investigated in this study, the results of which are presented in two volumes. This volume (Volume 1) presents the results of Concept 1 - Steel Beam Precast Units. Concept 2 - Modification of the Beam-in-Slab Bridge is presented in Volume 2. Concept 1, involves the fabrication of precast units (two steel beams connected by a concrete slab) by county work forces. Deck thickness is limited so that the units can be fabricated at one site and then transported to the bridge site where they are connected and the remaining portion of the deck placed. Since Concept 1 bridge is primarily intended for use on low-volume roads, the precast units can be constructed with new or used beams. In the experimental part of the investigation, there were three types of static load tests: small scale connector tests, "handling strength" tests, and service and overload tests of a model bridge. Three finite element models for analyzing the bridge in various states of construction were also developed. Small scale connector tests were completed to determine the best method of connecting the precast double-T (PCDT) units. "Handling strength" tests on an individual PCDT unit were performed to determine the strength and behavior of the precast unit in this configuration. The majority of the testing was completed on the model bridge [L=9,750 mm (32 ft), W=6,400 mm (21 ft)] which was fabricated using the precast units developed. Some of the variables investigated in the model bridge tests were number of connectors required to connect adjacent precast units, contribution of diaphragms to load distribution, influence of position of diaphragms on bridge strength and load distribution, and effect of cast-in-place portion of deck on load distribution. In addition to the service load tests, the bridge was also subjected to overload conditions. Using the finite element models developed, one can predict the behavior and strength of bridges similar to the laboratory model as well as design them. Concept 1 has successfully passed all laboratory testing; the next step is to field test it.
