What motivates students to perform and pursue engineering design tasks? This study examines this question by way of three Learning Through Service (LTS) programs: 1) an on-going longitudinal study examining the impacts of service on engineering students, 2) an on-going analysis of an international senior design capstone program, and 3) an on-going evaluation of an international graduate-level research program. The evaluation of these programs incorporates both qualitative and quantitative methods, utilizing surveys, questionnaires, and interviews, which help to provide insight on what motivates students to do engineering design work. The quantitative methods were utilized in analyzing various instruments including: a Readiness assessment inventory, Intercultural Development Inventory, Sustainable Engineering through Service Learning survey, the Impacts of Service on Engineering Students’ survey, Motivational narratives, as well as some analysis for interview text. The results of these instruments help to provide some much needed insight on how prepared students are to participate in engineering programs. Additional qualitative methods include: Word clouds, Motivational narratives, as well as interview analysis. This thesis focused on how these instruments help to determine what motivates engineering students to pursue engineering design tasks. These instruments aim to collect some more in-depth information than the quantitative instruments will allow. Preliminary results suggest that of the 120 interviews analyzed Interest/Enjoyment, Application of knowledge and skills, as well as gaining knowledge are key motivating factors regardless of gender or academic level. Together these findings begin to shed light on what motivates students to perform engineering design tasks, which can be applied for better recruitment and retention in university programs.

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to test the prediction from the Perception and Attention Deficit model of complex visual hallucinations (CVH) that impairments in visual attention and perception are key risk factors for complex hallucinations in eye disease and dementia. METHODS Two studies ran concurrently to investigate the relationship between CVH and impairments in perception (picture naming using the Graded Naming Test) and attention (Stroop task plus a novel Imagery task). The studies were in two populations-older patients with dementia (n = 28) and older people with eye disease (n = 50) with a shared control group (n = 37). The same methodology was used in both studies, and the North East Visual Hallucinations Inventory was used to identify CVH. RESULTS A reliable relationship was found for older patients with dementia between impaired perceptual and attentional performance and CVH. A reliable relationship was not found in the population of people with eye disease. CONCLUSIONS The results add to previous research that object perception and attentional deficits are associated with CVH in dementia, but that risk factors for CVH in eye disease are inconsistent, suggesting that dynamic rather than static impairments in attentional processes may be key in this population.

Platelets represent one of the largest storage pools of angiogenic and oncogenic growth factors in the human body. The observation that thrombocytosis (platelet count >450,000/uL) occurs in patients with solid malignancies was made over 100 years ago. However, the clinical and biological implications as well as the underlying mechanism of paraneoplastic thrombocytosis associated with ovarian carcinoma remains unknown and were the focus of the current study. Following IRB approval, patient data were collected on 619 patients from 4 U.S. centers and used to test associations between platelet count at initial diagnosis, clinicopathologic factors, and outcome. In vitro effects of plasma-purified platelets on ovarian cancer cell proliferation, docetaxel-induced apoptosis, and migration were evaluated using BrdU-PI flow cytometric and two-chamber chemotaxis assays. In vivo effects of platelet depletion on tumor growth, proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis were examined using an anti-platelet antibody (anti-mouse glycoprotein 1ba, Emfret) to reduce platelets by 50%. Complete blood counts and number of mature megakaryocytes in the spleen and bone marrow were compared between control mice and ovarian cancer-bearing mice. Plasma levels of key megakaryo- and thrombopoietic factors including thrombopoietin (TPO), IL-1a, IL-3, IL-4, IL-6, IL-11, G-CSF, GM-CSF, stem cell factor, and FLT-3 ligand were assayed in a subset of 150 patients at the time of initial diagnosis with advanced stage, high grade epithelial ovarian cancer using immunobead-based cytokine profiling coupled with the Luminex® xMAP platform. Plasma cytokines significantly associated with thrombocytosis in ovarian cancer patients were subsequently evaluated in mouse models of ovarian cancer using ELISA immunoassays. The results of human and mouse plasma cytokine profiling were used to inform subsequent in vivo studies evaluating the effect of siRNA-induced silencing of select megakaryo- and thrombopoietic cytokines on paraneoplastic thrombocytosis. Thirty-one percent of patients had thrombocytosis at initial diagnosis. Compared to patients with normal platelet counts, women with thrombocytosis were significantly more likely to have advanced stage disease (p<0.001) and poor median progression-free (0.94 vs 1.35 years, p<0.001) and overall survival (2.62 vs 4.65 years, p<0.001). On multivariate analysis, thrombocytosis remained an independent predictor of decreased overall survival. Our analysis revealed that thrombocytosis significantly increases the risk of VTE in ovarian cancer patients and that thrombocytosis is an independent predictor of increased mortality in women who do develop a blood clot. Platelets increased ovarian cancer cell proliferation and migration by 4.1- and 2.8-fold (p<0.01), respectively. Platelets reduced docetaxel-induced apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells by 2-fold (p<0.001). In vivo, platelet depletion reduced tumor growth by 50%. Staining of in vivo specimens revealed decreased tumor cell proliferation (p<0.001) and increased tumor and endothelial cell apoptosis (p<0.01). Platelet depletion also significantly decreased microvessel density and pericyte coverage (p<0.001). Platelet counts increase by 31-130% in mice with invasive ovarian cancer compared to controls (p<0.01) and strongly correlate with mean megakaryocyte counts in the spleen and bone marrow (r=0.95, p<0.05). Plasma levels of TPO, IL-6, and G-CSF were significantly increased in ovarian cancer patients with thrombocytosis. Plasma levels of the same cytokines were found to be significantly elevated in orthotopic mouse models of ovarian cancer, which consistently develop paraneoplastic thromocytosis. Silencing TPO, IL-6, and G-CSF significantly abrogated paraneoplastic thrombocytosis in vivo. This study provides new understanding of the clinical and biological significance of paraneoplastic thrombocytosis in ovarian cancer and uncovers key humoral factors driving this process. Blocking the development of paraneoplastic thrombocytosis and interfering with platelet-cancer cell interactions could represent novel therapeutic strategies.

Despite the astounding success of the fast fashion retailers, the management practices leading to these results have not been subject to extensive research so far. Given this background, we analyze the impact of information sharing and vertical integration on the performance of 51 German apparel companies. We find that the positive impact of vertical integration is mediated by information sharing, i.e. that the ability to improve the information flow is a key success factor of vertically integrated apparel supply chains. Thus, the success of an expansion strategy based on vertical integration critically depends on effective ways to share logistical information.

This article presents an empirical interdisciplinary study of an extensive participatory process that was carried out in 2004 in the recently established World Natural Heritage Site “Jungfrau–Aletsch– Bietschhorn” in the Swiss Alps. The study used qualitative and quantitative empirical methods of social science to address the question of success factors in establishing and concretizing a World Heritage Site. Current international scientific and policy debates agree that the most important success factors in defining pathways for nature conservation and protection are: linking development and conservation, involving multiple stakeholders, and applying participatory approaches. The results of the study indicate that linking development and conservation implies the need to extend the reach of negotiations beyond the area of conservation, and to develop both a regional perspective and a focus on sustainable regional development. In the process, regional and local stakeholders are less concerned with defining sustainability goals than elaborating strategies of sustainability, in particular defining the respective roles of the core sectors of society and economy. However, the study results also show that conflicting visions and perceptions of nature and landscape are important underlying currents in such negotiations. They differ significantly between various stakeholder categories and are an important cause of conflicts occurring at various stages of the participatory process.

The objective of this paper is to address the methodological process of a teaching strategy for training project management complexity in postgraduate programs. The proposal is made up of different methods —intuitive, comparative, deductive, case study, problem-solving Project-Based Learning— and different activities inside and outside the classroom. This integration of methods motivated the current use of the concept of “learning strategy”. The strategy has two phases: firstly, the integration of the competences —technical, behavioral and contextual—in real projects; and secondly, the learning activity was oriented in upper level of knowledge, the evaluating the complexity for projects management in real situations. Both the competences in the learning strategy and the Project Complexity Evaluation are based on the ICB of IPMA. The learning strategy is applied in an international Postgraduate Program —Erasmus Mundus Master of Science— with the participation of five Universities of the European Union. This master program is fruit of a cooperative experience from one Educative Innovation Group of the UPM -GIE-Project-, two Research Groups of the UPM and the collaboration with other external agents to the university. Some reflections on the experience and the main success factors in the learning strategy were presented in the paper

The paths towards high efficiency multijunction solar cells operating inside real concentrators at ultra high concentration (>1000 suns) are described. The key addressed factors comprehend: 1) the development of an optimized tunnel junction with a high peak current density (240 A/cm2) to mitigate the non-uniform light profiles created by concentrators, 2) the inclusion of highly conductive semiconductor lateral layers to minimize the effects of the non-uniform light profiles in general, and the chromatic aberration in particular; and 3) an adequate design of reliability studies to test multijunction solar cells for real operation conditions in order to determine the fragile parts in the device and improve them. These challenges are faced by means of experimental and theoretical investigation using a quasi-3D distributed circuital model.

Analysis of the relationship between competitiveness and technological development for 135 worldwide countries. Factors and Key Performance Indicators. Clusters of economies Abstract:The research evaluates the competitiveness of 135 countries, based solely on technological variables. The methodology raises calculation protocol for the total of selected economies in the periods 2005-2006 and 2007- 2008. This protocol makes a statistical evaluation. And setting up a discussion, where we analyzed the explanation of the relationship and the interpretation of results. Finally, we evaluate the conclusions for the world economies. Within each group of economies, we know which variables need originally to be prioritized to improve the competitiveness. These variables are from a group of 68, and after the implementation of the method are reduced dramatically in number. These variables will be called Key Performance Indicators and will be grouped into Factors (Key Performance Factors) this will significantly simplify matters. Within this group of countries have been reduced three factors that collect their Key Performance Indicators . A country to country detailed analysis of their positions according to each of the Key Performance Indicators on a mathematical basis. The main desire of this research is to significantly simplify the comparison between the competitiveness of nations and their technological level. Key words: economies, innovation, competitiveness, public policy, business strategies.

ABSTRACT - During the last 30 years, many institutions have been evaluating and endless range of variables in practically all of the world´s economies. This Thesis is the product of a detail analysis of more than one hundred indicators / index, which we have divided into two parts: those focused on development and those focused on economic competitiveness (see module I annex). Secondly, in our theoretical research we have concentrated on those indicators, which are related to technology (chapters 3, section 3.3). The selection criteria of the six economic groups to be evaluated are included in our methodology, as mentioned in the hypothesis (see section 2.2.). Subsequently the calculation procedure is also presented for all of the groups selected between the periods 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. Next, we perform a statistical study, which is presented accordingly in the segment dealing with statistics, section 3.4.4.5. The calculations are provided in modules I, II, III, IV and V annex. After the methods segment of the Thesis, we develop our argument, in which we presented the explanation of the relations as well as the interpretation of the results. Also at the chapter 4 you can find the result validation from 2007 till 2015. Finally in chapters 6, we evaluate the conclusions for the six economic groups (see section 6.2.). The Thesis scientifically explains the way in which we evaluate economic competitiveness in 135 countries from a standpoint of strictly technological variables. Six groups of countries are evaluated, being divided by criteria, which homogenize the economies under review. We recognize that the variables of each economic group should be prioritized in order to better their competitiveness. Initially the group consisted of 68 variables, a number which was considerably reduced after the implementation of our methodology. Likewise, these final variables, dubbed “key performance indicators”, were grouped into factors (key performance factors), which greatly simplify the prioritization process. At the same time, conglomerates have been created for each economic group according to their value concerning the selected variables. A detailed country – by – country analysis of their positioning in each of the six groups was conducted for each of the mathematically selected key performance indicators. Finally, at the Conclusion we introduce new research lines and between them we focus on two research lines in which ones we are working with (see chapter 6). We basically try to apply the multivariable analysis method, the factorial analysis and the conglomerates to designed and implemented our method first in a geographically group of countries (Africa) and secondly to evaluate and develop the public policies for Spain for the development of its competitively, comparing Spain to his coetaneous countries in Europe (see Module VIII). The main objective of this Doctoral Thesis is to noticeably simplify the comparison of the Network Readiness Index and its relation with the economic competitiveness of the countries using a new synthetic index design by us.
