Evaluation of the agricultural vocational training programmes conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Farm Science Centres) in Indian Punjab

Krishin Vigyan Kendras-KVKs (Farm Science Centres) have been established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 569 districts. The trust areas of KVKs are refinement and demonstration of technologies, and training of farmers and extension functionaries. Imparting vocational trainings in agriculture and allied fields for the rural youth is one of its mandates. The study was undertaken to do a formative and summative (outcome and impact) evaluation of the beekeeping and mushroom growing vocational training programmes in the Indian state of Punjab. One-group pre and post evaluation design was employed for conducting a formative and outcome evaluation. The knowledge tests were administered to 35 beekeeping and 25 mushroom cultivation trainees, before and after the training programmes organized in 2004. The trainees significantly gained in knowledge. A separate sample of 640 trainees, trained prior to 2004, was selected for finding the adoption status. Out of 640, a sample of 200 was selected by proportionate sampling technique out of three categories, namely: non-adopters, discontinued-adopters and continued-adopters for evaluating the long-term impact of these training programmes. Ex-post-facto one-shot case study design was applied for this impact analysis. The vocational training programmes have resulted in continued-adoption of beekeeping and mushroom cultivation enterprises by 20% and 51% trained farmers, respectively. Age and trainee occupation had significant influence on the adoption decision of beekeeping vocation, whereas education and family income significantly affected the adoption decision of mushroom cultivation. The continued adopters of beekeeping and mushroom growing had increased their family income by 49% and 24%, respectively. These training programmes are augmenting the dwindling farm income of the farmers in Indian Punjab.

Hybrid optimization schemes for quantum control

Optimal control theory is a powerful tool for solving control problems in quantum mechanics, ranging from the control of chemical reactions to the implementation of gates in a quantum computer. Gradient-based optimization methods are able to find high fidelity controls, but require considerable numerical effort and often yield highly complex solutions. We propose here to employ a two-stage optimization scheme to significantly speed up convergence and achieve simpler controls. The control is initially parametrized using only a few free parameters, such that optimization in this pruned search space can be performed with a simplex method. The result, considered now simply as an arbitrary function on a time grid, is the starting point for further optimization with a gradient-based method that can quickly converge to high fidelities. We illustrate the success of this hybrid technique by optimizing a geometric phase gate for two superconducting transmon qubits coupled with a shared transmission line resonator, showing that a combination of Nelder-Mead simplex and Krotov’s method yields considerably better results than either one of the two methods alone.

Identifying the factors governing attitude towards the e-Agriservice among dairy farmers in Maharashtra, India

Information and communication technology (ICT) projects have a great potential to revolutionise the information delivery system by bridging the gap between farmers and extension personnel. aAQUA (Almost All Questions Answered) portal was launched by the Developmental Informatics Laboratory (DIL) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai, Maharashtra, India in 2003 as an information providing system to deliver technology options and tailored information for the problems and queries raised by Indian dairy farmers. To measure the effectiveness of this service the attitudinal dimensions of the users of aAQUA e-Agriservice were investigated using a 22 item scale. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 120 dairy farmers from which data were collected and subjected to factor analysis to identify the underlying constructs in this research. From the attitude items, four components were extracted and named as the pessimistic, utility, technical and efficacy perspective, which influenced the development of varied level of attitudinal inclination towards the e-Agriservice. These components explained 64.40 per cent of variation in the attitude of the users towards the aAQUA e-Agriservice. This study provides a framework for technically efficient service provision that might help to reduce the pessimistic attitude of target population to adopt e-Agriservice in their farming system. The results should also be helpful for researchers, academics, ICT based service providers and policy makers to consider these perspectives while planning and implementing ICT projects.

Efficient learning of reactive robot behaviors with a Neural-Q_learning approach

The purpose of this paper is to propose a Neural-Q_learning approach designed for online learning of simple and reactive robot behaviors. In this approach, the Q_function is generalized by a multi-layer neural network allowing the use of continuous states and actions. The algorithm uses a database of the most recent learning samples to accelerate and guarantee the convergence. Each Neural-Q_learning function represents an independent, reactive and adaptive behavior which maps sensorial states to robot control actions. A group of these behaviors constitutes a reactive control scheme designed to fulfill simple missions. The paper centers on the description of the Neural-Q_learning based behaviors showing their performance with an underwater robot in a target following task. Real experiments demonstrate the convergence and stability of the learning system, pointing out its suitability for online robot learning. Advantages and limitations are discussed

¿Puede el mediador católico permanecer coherente con las doctrinas de su iglesia, empleando el modelo relacional simbólico? : una reflexión a partir de las divergencias y convergencias entre la doctrina matrimonial católica y el modelo relacional simbólico

Esta investigación responde a la inquietud del Mediador católico, al emplear el Modelo Relacional Simbólico, sabiendo el rechazo de la Iglesia al divorcio. La Mediación Familiar acompaña los esposos en proceso de separación. Pero ante la posición de la Iglesia, surge la pregunta: ¿Puede el mediador católico permanecer coherente con las Doctrinas de su Iglesia, empleando el Modelo Relacional Simbólico? La reflexión parte de la Palabra de Dios, desde el Antiguo Testamento, hasta los Evangelios y las cartas apostólicas, mirando las posiciones sobre la familia y el divorcio. En un segundo momento se detiene en la Doctrina Pontificia Católica al respecto en los últimos Pontífices. Se presenta luego el divorcio y las orientaciones pastorales de la Iglesia sobre el mismo. La reflexión se dirige finalmente al Modelo de Mediación y sus bondades, para compararlo en el último capítulo con las enseñanzas de la Iglesia y hallar las convergencias y divergencias. El resultado de este análisis permite a los investigadores hallar coherente la Mediación Familiar con el Modelo Relacional Simbólico con su fe.

Innovación educativa en la enseñanza de literatura en la facultad de filología de la UCM en el marco del EEES.

Las siguientes líneas muestran la relevancia de la adquisición de competencia en el manejo de información en el marco del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior y resumen la trayectoria innovadora e investigadora del grupo Literaturas Españolas y Europeas del Texto al Hipertexto (L.E.E.T.Hi.), cuya orientación que tiene como ejes fundamentales los patrones didácticos de la Convergencia Europea y el empleo de los soportes hipertextuales como espacios, no sólo de representación y documentación, sino de generación de nuevas formas de aprendizaje. La investigación de LEETHI se centra en la docencia de las literaturas a través de estos espacios, que generan nuevas formas de lectura y de adquisición de conocimientos de manera asociativa y que, a través de los textos literarios, propician encuentros entre disciplinas y culturas diversas.

Modelamiento estratégico de una empresa del sector de plásticos a partir de la aplicación de la herramienta de análisis estructural de sectores estratégicos

Este estudio pretende aplicar la herramienta descrita en el libro “Análisis estructural de sectores estratégicos” con el objeto de determinar los niveles de hacinamiento, convergencia y morbilidad del sector industrial al que pertenece la empresa Intraplas Ltda., ubicada en la ciudad de Bogotá y dedicada al transformación de resina de PVC en perfilería utilizada en la fabricación de muebles RTA. Luego, aprovechado las conclusiones que de este estudio se deriven, se procederá a diseñar un modelo estratégico soportado en las teorías de Michael Porter, que le deberá permitir a la empresa estudiada reenfocar sus esfuerzos hacia sectores del mercado poco o nada hacinados a través de un adecuado encaje entre su posición estratégica, sus ventajas competitivas y una cadena de valor pertinentemente configurada, entregándole de esta forma a dicha empresa, una herramienta estructurada que eleve sus posibilidades de perdurar de manera rentable en el tiempo.
