The Government Decision1 on the Structural, Organisational, Financial Management and Systems Reform of the Health Sector of June, 2003 acknowledged that in order to increase the effectiveness of the health service generally, and its capacity to deliver the reform agenda, it was important that the service was fully concentrated on addressing its core health objectives. The Minister for Health and Children and Minister for Finance felt that there could be scope to transfer certain functions out of the health service and locate them more appropriately within other functional areas of Government. As part of the overall decision, it was agreed that a working group would be established, to include the Departments of Health and Children, Finance and An Taoiseach, to examine the scope for transfer of certain activities to other, more appropriate, Departments and agencies and that on completion of this review, the Minister for Health and Children would bring proposals to Government. Las herramientas de análisis de secuencias genómicas permiten a los biólogos identificar y entender regiones fundamentales que tienen implicación en enfermedades genéticas. Actualmente existe una necesidad de dotar al ámbito científico de herramientas de análisis eficientes. Este proyecto lleva a cabo una caracterización y análisis del rendimiento de algoritmos utilizados en la comparación de secuencias genómicas completas, y ejecutadas en arquitecturas MultiCore y ManyCore. A partir del análisis se evalúa la idoneidad de este tipo de arquitecturas para resolver el problema de comparar secuencias genómicas. Finalmente se propone una serie de modificaciones en las implementaciones de estos algoritmos con el objetivo de mejorar el rendimiento.

Las aplicaciones de alineamiento de secuencias son una herramienta importante para la comunidad científica. Estas aplicaciones bioinformáticas son usadas en muchos campos distintos como pueden ser la medicina, la biología, la farmacología, la genética, etc. A día de hoy los algoritmos de alineamiento de secuencias tienen una complejidad elevada y cada día tienen que manejar un volumen de datos más grande. Por esta razón se deben buscar alternativas para que estas aplicaciones sean capaces de manejar el aumento de tamaño que los bancos de secuencias están sufriendo día a día. En este proyecto se estudian y se investigan mejoras en este tipo de aplicaciones como puede ser el uso de sistemas paralelos que pueden mejorar el rendimiento notablemente.

Astrocytes are the brain non-nerve cells competent for the expression of clear and dense-core vesicles (DCVs) and for their regulated exocytosis. This process, called gliosecretion, nearly resembles the neurosecretion occurring in neurons and neurosecretory cells. REST/NRSF is a transcription repressor known to orchestrate nerve-cell differentiation, governing the expression of hundreds of neuron-specific genes through their repression in the non-nerve and their fine modulation in the nerve cells. Our previous studies in neurosecretory rat PC12 cells identified REST as the critical factor for the expression not only of individual genes, but also of the whole neurosecretory process via multiple, direct and indirect mechanisms (D'Alessandro et al., J. Neurochem., 2008; Klajn et al., J. Neurosci., 2009). Therefore we wondered whether gliosecretion was governed by REST. We investigated rat astrocyte primary cultures: they exhibited high REST, which directly represses the transcription of at least one target gene, and expressed neither DCVs nor their markers (granins, peptides, membrane proteins). Transfection of a dominant-negative construct of REST (REST/ DBD-GFP) induced the appearance of DCVs filled with secretogranin2 and NPY that are distinct from other intracellular organelles. TIRF analysis of astrocytes co-transfected with REST/DBD-GFP and NPY-mRFP constructs revealed NPY-mRFP-positive DCVs undergoing Ca2þ-dependent exocytosis, largely prevented by BoNT/B. Immunohistochemistry of the I-II layers of the human temporal brain cortex showed all neurons and microglia exhibiting the expected inappreciable and high levels of REST, respectively. In contrast astrocyte RESTwas variable, going from inappreciable to high, accompanied by variable expression of DCVs. In this work it has been demonstrated that astrocyte DCV expression and gliosecretion are governed by REST (Prada et al., 2011 in press). The variable in situ REST levels may contribute to the well known structural/functional heterogeneity of astrocytes and this new observation might be of great interest for the understanding of both astrocyte physiology and pathology.

Although exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is reportedly high in prison, few studies have measured this in the prison environment, and none have done so in Europe. We measured two indicators of SHS exposure (particulate matter PM10 and nicotine) in fixed locations before (2009) and after (2010) introduction of a partial smoking ban in a Swiss prison. Access to smoking cessation support was available to detainees throughout the study. Objectives To measure SHS before and after the introduction of a partial smoking ban. Methods Assessment of particulate matter PM10 (suspended microparticles of 10 μm) and nicotine in ambient air, collected by real-time aerosol monitor and nicotine monitoring devices. Results The authors observed a significant improvement of nicotine concentrations in the air after the introduction of the smoking ban (before: 7.0 μg/m(3), after: 2.1 μg/m(3), difference 4.9 μg/m(3), 95% CI for difference: 0.52 to 9.8, p=0.03) but not in particulate matter PM10 (before: 0.11 mg/m(3), after: 0.06 mg/m(3), difference 0.06 mg/m(3), 95% CI for difference of means: -0.07 to 0.19, p=0.30). Conclusions The partial smoking ban was followed by a decrease in nicotine concentrations in ambient air. These improvements can be attributed to the introduction of the smoking ban since no other policy change occurred during this period. Although this shows that concentrations of SHS decreased significantly, protection was still incomplete and further action is necessary to improve indoor air quality.

Les sports équestres sont en plein développement en France où l'on compte plus d'un million de chevaux. Le nombre de cavaliers pratiquant en club ou chez eux est estimé à 600 000 et l'on dénombre plus de 68 000 emplois en France dans tous les domaines : agriculture, environnement, courses, loisirs, sports (www.haras-nationaux.fr). On trouve également dans les métiers du cheval les vétérinaires spécialisés ainsi que les maréchaux-ferrants. De plus, la France est un pays reconnu pour son activité d'élevage avec une production de chevaux de concours de très grande qualité.Récemment, plusieurs études relatant les expositions professionnelles à la poussière des écuries ont paru dans les journaux scientifiques. Les résultats montrent que la poussière issue des écuries contient, entre autres, des concentrations relativement élevées d'endotoxines (1) et de ?(1-3)-glucan (2) pouvant avoir des conséquences sur la santé respiratoire des travailleurs. En effet, des études précédentes ont montré que le fait de travailler ou de côtoyer des chevaux était associé avec une augmentation des risques de problèmes des voies respiratoires supérieures tels que des irritations du nez, de la toux (sèche et productive), de l'asthme, des bronchites chroniques et des épisodes d'" organic dust toxic syndrome (3) " (Gallagher et al., 2007 ; Mazan et al., 2009). Thissecond annual report of the Director of Public Health highlights the many public health challenges that affect people in Northern Ireland. It demonstrates how the public health team tackles this complex agenda by working with many statutory, community and voluntary partner organisations across health, local government, education, housing and other sectors. It shows a wealth of innovative work to address the main public health challenges facing communities, health inequality, preventing and protecting against ill-health, detecting illness early, and providing high quality services. Integral to thereport are core tables for 2009 which provide key statistical data on population, birth and death rates, mortality by cause, life expectancy, immunisation and screening.

The increase in mortality risk associated with long-term exposure to particulate air pollution is one of the most important, and best-characterised, effects of air pollution on health. This report presents estimates of the size of this effect on mortality in local authority areas in the UK, building upon the attributable fractions reported as an indicator in the public health outcomes framework for England. It discusses the concepts and assumptions underlying these calculations and gives information on how such estimates can be made. The estimates are expected to be useful to health and wellbeing boards when assessing local public health priorities, as well as to others working in the field of air quality and public health. The estimates of mortality burden are based on modelled annual average concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in each local authority area originating from human activities. Local data on the adult population and adult mortality rates is also used. Central estimates of the fraction of mortality attributable to long-term exposure to current levels of anthropogenic (human-made) particulate air pollution range from around 2.5% in some local authorities in rural areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland and between 3 and 5% in Wales, to over 8% in some London boroughs. Because of uncertainty in the increase in mortality risk associated with ambient PM2.5, the actual burdens associated with these modelled concentrations could range from approximately one-sixth to about double these figures. Thus, current levels of particulate air pollution have a considerable impact on public health. Measures to reduce levels of particulate air pollution, or to reduce exposure of the population to such pollution, are regarded as an important public health initiative.

In this study it was compared the MAS-100 and the Andersen air samplers' performances and a similar trend in both instruments was observed. It was also evaluated the microbial contamination levels in 3060 samples of offices, hospitals, industries, and shopping centers, in the period of 1998 to 2002, in Rio de Janeiro city. Considering each environment, 94.3 to 99.4% of the samples were the allowed limit in Brazil (750 CFU/m³). The industries' results showed more important similarity among fungi and total heterotrophs distributions, with the majority of the results between zero and 100 CFU/m³. The offices' results showed dispersion around 300 CFU/m³. The hospitals' results presented the same trend, with an average of 200 CFU/m³. Shopping centers' environments showed an average of 300 CFU/m³ for fungi, but presented a larger dispersion pattern for the total heterotrophs, with the highest average (1000 CFU/m³). It was also investigated the correlation of the sampling period with the number of airborne microorganisms and with the environmental parameters (temperature and air humidity) through the principal components analysis. All indoor air samples distributions were very similar. The temperature and air humidity had no significant influence on the samples dispersion patterns.

The National Obesity Observatory was established to provide a single point of contact for wide-ranging authoritative information on data and evidence related to obesity, overweight, underweight and their determinants. The Standard Evaluation Framework is a list of data collection criteria and supporting guidance for collecting high quality information to support the evaluation of weight management interventions. This is a quick reference guide to the core criteria of the Standard Evaluation Framework. Essential criteria are presented as the minimum recommended data for evaluating a weight management intervention. To increase blood safety Brazil introduced screening for anti-HBc among blood donors in 1993. There was a decrease in the hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission, but this measure identified a great number of HBsAg-negative, anti-HBc-positive donors. Surveillance policy determines that contacts of HBV carriers should be screened to HBV markers, but there is no recommendation about how to guide contacts of HBsAg-negative, anti-HBc-positive donors. Aiming to evaluate whether the contacts of this group are at greater risk for HBV infection, a cross-sectional study was performed to compare prevalence of HBV infection between contacts of HBsAg-positive blood donors (group I) and contacts of HBsAg-negative, anti-HBc-positive donors (group II). Contacts were submitted to a questionnaire and blood tests for HBV markers. In group I (n = 143), 53 (37.1%) were anti-HBc-positive and 11 (7.7%) were HBsAg-positive. In group II (n = 111), there were 9 and 0.9%, respectively. HBV exposure was associated with group I, sexual activity, blood transfusion, being one of the donor's parents, and living for more than ten years with the donor. Regarding the families as sample units, it was more common to find at least one member with HBV markers (p < 0.05) among the families of group I compared to group II. Contacts of HBsAg-negative, anti-HBc-positive individuals presented a much lower risk of having already been exposed to HBV and there is no need to screen them for HBV in low to moderate prevalence populations.
