Permanent plastic deformation induced by mechanical contacts affects the shape recovery of shape memory alloys. To understand the shape recovery of NiTiCu thin films subjected to local contact stresses, systematic investigations are carried out by inducing varying levels of contact stresses using nanoindentation. The resulting indents are located precisely for imaging using a predetermined array consisting of different sized indents. Morphology and topography of these indents before and after shape recovery are characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope and Atomic Force Microscope quantitatively. Shape recovery is found to be dependent on the contact stresses at the low loads while the recovery ratio remains constant at 0.13 for higher loads. Shape recovery is found to occur mainly in depth direction of the indent, while far field residual stresses play very little role in the recovery. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The solubilities of butyl stearate and butyl laurate were determined in the temperature range of 308 K to 323 K and 313 K to 328 K, respectively, at pressures of 10 MPa to 16 MPa. The solubility of butyl laurate was higher than that of butyl stearate by almost an order in magnitude. Retrograde behavior was observed throughout the investigated pressure range. Semiempirical models such as Mendez-Teja, Chrastil, and other density-based models were used to correlate the experimental data of our work as well as several other liquid solutes.

Local heterogeneity is ubiquitous in natural aqueous systems. It can be caused locally by external biomolecular subsystems like proteins, DNA, micelles and reverse micelles, nanoscopic materials etc., but can also be intrinsic to the thermodynamic nature of the aqueous solution itself (like binary mixtures or at the gas-liquid interface). The altered dynamics of water in the presence of such diverse surfaces has attracted considerable attention in recent years. As these interfaces are quite narrow, only a few molecular layers thick, they are hard to study by conventional methods. The recent development of two dimensional infra-red (2D-IR) spectroscopy allows us to estimate length and time scales of such dynamics fairly accurately. In this work, we present a series of interesting studies employing two dimensional infra-red spectroscopy (2D-IR) to investigate (i) the heterogeneous dynamics of water inside reverse micelles of varying sizes, (ii) supercritical water near the Widom line that is known to exhibit pronounced density fluctuations and also study (iii) the collective and local polarization fluctuation of water molecules in the presence of several different proteins. The spatio-temporal correlation of confined water molecules inside reverse micelles of varying sizes is well captured through the spectral diffusion of corresponding 2D-IR spectra. In the case of supercritical water also, we observe a strong signature of dynamic heterogeneity from the elongated nature of the 2D-IR spectra. In this case the relaxation is ultrafast. We find remarkable agreement between the different tools employed to study the relaxation of density heterogeneity. For aqueous protein solutions, we find that the calculated dielectric constant of the respective systems unanimously shows a noticeable increment compared to that of neat water. However, the `effective' dielectric constant for successive layers shows significant variation, with the layer adjacent to the protein having a much lower value. Relaxation is also slowest at the surface. We find that the dielectric constant achieves the bulk value at distances more than 3 nm from the surface of the protein.

The gas-phase infrared spectra of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD have been, recorded at three different temperatures using a multipass gas cell of 6 m optical path length. DFT calculation has also been carried out using 6-311++G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets to look for the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, in them from the red shift and infrared absorption intensity enhancement of the bonded O-H band compared to that of the free O-H hand. Equilibrium population analysis With 10 conformers of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD at experimental temperatures were-carried out for the reconstruction of the Observed vibrational spectra at that temperature, using standard statistical relationships. The most abundant conformer at experimental temperatures, was identified. In 1,2-ED a red shift of 45 cm(-1) in the intramolecularly interacting O-H stretching vibrational band position and no significant intensity enhancement compared to that of-the free O-H have been observed. On the contrary, in one of the hydrogen bonded conformers of 1,4-BD, a 124 cm(-1) red shift in the O-H stretching frequency and 8.5 times-intensity enhancement for the ``bonded'' O-H compared to that of the ``free'' O-H is seen. On the basis of this comparative study, we have concluded that strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding exists in 1,4-BD. But there appears, to be weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding in 1,2-ED at temperatures of 303, 313, and 323 Km the gas phase We have found that most stable hydrogen-bonded conformers of 1,4-BD are less populated than some of the non-hydrogen-bonded conformers. Even for the 1,4-BD, the relative population of the g'GG'Gt conformer, which has a strong intramolecular, hydrogen bond, is less than what is predicted. Perhaps the intramolecular hydrogen bond plays a less Significant role in the relative stability,of the various Conformers than what has been predicted from calculations and prevails in the literature.

An adenylyl cyclase from Mycobacterium avium, Mal 120, is a functional orthologue of a pseudogene Rv1120c from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We report the crystal structure of Mal 120 in a monomeric form and its truncated construct as a dimer. Mal 120 exists as a monomer in solution and crystallized as a monomer in the absence of substrate or inhibitor. An additional alpha-helix present at the N-terminus of the monomeric structure blocks the active site by interacting with the substrate binding residues and occupying the dimer interface region. However, the enzyme has been found to be active in solution, indicating the movement of the helix away from the interface to facilitate the formation of active dimers in conditions favourable for catalysis. Thus, the N-terminal helix of Ma1120 keeps the enzyme in an autoinhibited state when it is not active. Deletion of this helix enabled us to crystallize the molecule as an active homodimer in the presence of a P-site inhibitor 2',5'-dideoxy-3'-ATP, or pyrophosphate along with metal ions. The substrate specifying lysine residue plays a dual role of interacting with the substrate and stabilizing the dimer. The dimerization loop region harbouring the second substrate specifying residue, an aspartate, shows significant differences in conformation and position between the monomeric and dimeric structures. Thus, this study has not only revealed that significant structural transitions are required for the interconversion of the inactive and the active forms of the enzyme, but also provided precise nature of these transitions. The solubilities of 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured at 308, 313,323 and 333K, and at pressures of 10-18 MPa. Solubilities (in mole fraction),ranged from 0.4 x 10(-3) to 17.4 x 10(-3) for 10-undecenoic acid and 2.7 x 10(-3) to 25 x 10(-3) for geraniol, respectively. The AARD was around 11% and 5% for these models for 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol, respectively. The solubilities of both compounds showed retrograde behavior wherein the solubilities decrease with temperature at isobaric conditions. The solubility of geraniol was higher than 10-undecenoic acid at all investigated temperatures and pressures. The data were found to be self consistent based on the Mendez-Santiago model. New models based on association theory using van Laar and Margules activity coefficient models for solute in liquid phase were derived, and used to correlate the solubilities. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The assumption of constant rock properties in pressure-transient analysis of stress-sensitive reservoirs can cause significant errors in the estimation of temporal and spatial variation of pressure. In this article, the pressure transient response of the fractal medium in stress-sensitive reservoirs was studied by using the self-similarity solution method and the regular perturbation method. The dependence of permeability on pore pressure makes the flow equation strongly nonlinear. The nonlinearities associated with the governing equation become weaker by using the logarithm transformation. The perturbation solutions for a constant pressure production and a constant rate production of a linear-source well were obtained by using the self-similarity solution method and the regular perturbation method in an infinitely large system, and inquire into the changing rule of pressure when the fractal and deformation parameters change. The plots of typical pressure curves were given in a few cases, and the results can be applied to well test analysis.

Separated shear layer of blunt circular cylinder has been experimentally investigated for the Reynolds numbers (based on the diameter) ranging from 2.8 x 10(3) to 1.0 x 10(5), with emphasis on evolution of separated shear layer, its structure and distribution of Reynolds shear stress and turbulence kinetic energy. The results demonstrate that laminar separated shear layer experiences 2 similar to 3 times vortex merging before it reattaches, and turbulence separated shear layer takes 5 similar to 6 times vortex merging. In addition, relationship between dimensionless initial frequencies of K-H instability and Reynolds numbers is identified, and reasons for the decay of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress in reattachment region are discussed.
