The input to soils made by pollen and its subsequent mineralization has rarely been investigated from a soil microbiological point of view even though the small but significant quantities of C and N in pollen may make an important contribution to nutrient cycling. The relative resistance to decomposition of pollen exines (outer layers) has led to much of the focus of pollen in soil being on its preservation for archaeological and palaeo-ecological purposes. We have examined aspects of the chemical composition and decomposition of pollen from birch (Betula alba) and maize (Zea mays) in soil. The relatively large N contents, small C-to-N ratios and large water-soluble contents of pollen from both species indicated that they would be readily mineralized in soil. When added to soil and incubated at 16 degrees C an amount of C equivalent to 22-26% of the added pollen C was lost as CO2 within 22 days, with the Z. mays pollen decomposing faster. For B. alba pollen, the water-soluble fraction decomposed faster than the whole pollen and the insoluble fraction decomposed more slowly over 22 days. By contrast, there were no significant differences in the decomposition rates of the different fractions from Z. mays pollen. Solid-state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed no gross chemical differences between the pollen of these two species, with strong resonances in the alkyl- and methyl-C region (0-45 p.p.m.) indicative of aliphatic compounds, the O-alkyl-C (60-90 p.p.m.) and the acetal- and ketal-C region (90-110 p.p.m.) indicative of polysaccharides, and the carbonyl-C region indicative of peptides and carboxylic acids. In addition, both pollens gave a small but distinct resonance at 55 p.p.m. attributed to N-alkyl-C. The resonances attributed to polysaccharides were lost completely or substantially reduced after decomposition.

Forty-multiparous Holstein cows were used in a 16-wk continuous design study to determine the effects of either selenium (Se) source, selenized yeast (SY) (derived from a specific strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3060 Sel-Plex®) or sodium selenite (SS), or inclusion rate of SY on Se concentration and speciation in blood, milk and cheese. Cows received ad libitum a TMR with 1:1 forage:concentrate ratio on a dry matter (DM) basis. There were four diets (T1-T4) which differed only in either source or dose of Se additive. Estimated total dietary Se for T1 (no supplement), T2 (SS), T3 (SY) and T4 (SY) was 0.16, 0.30, 0.30 and 0.45 mg/kg DM, respectively. Blood and milk samples were taken at 28 day intervals and at each time point there were positive linear effects of SY on Se concentration in blood and milk. At day 112 blood and milk Se values for T1-T4 were 177, 208, 248, 279 ± 6.6 and 24, 38, 57, 72 ± 3.7 ng/g fresh material, respectively and indicate improved uptake and incorporation of Se from SY. While selenocysteine (SeCys) was the main selenised amino acid in blood its concentration was not markedly affected by treatment, but the proportion of total Se as selenomethionine (SeMet) increased with increasing inclusion rate of SY. In milk, there were no marked treatment effects on SeCys content, but Se source had a marked effect on the proportion of total Se as SeMet. At day 112 replacing SS (T2) with SY (T3) increased the SeMet concentration of milk from 36 to 111 ng Se/g and its concentration increased further to 157 ng Se/g as the inclusion rate of SY increased further (T4) to provide 0.45 mg Se/kg TMR. Neither Se source nor inclusion rate effected the keeping quality of milk. At day 112, milk from T1, T2, and T3 was made into a hard cheese and Se source had a marked effect on total Se and the proportion of total Se comprised as either SeMet or SeCys. Replacing SS (T2) with SY (T3) increased total Se, SeMet and SeCys content from 180 to 340 ng Se/g, 57 to 153 ng Se/g and 52 to 92 ng Se/g, respectively. 1. Soil carbon (C) storage is a key ecosystem service. Soil C stocks play a vital role in soil fertility and climate regulation, but the factors that control these stocks at regional and national scales are unknown, particularly when their composition and stability are considered. As a result, their mapping relies on either unreliable proxy measures or laborious direct measurements. 2. Using data from an extensive national survey of English grasslands we show that surface soil (0-7cm) C stocks in size fractions of varying stability can be predicted at both regional and national scales from plant traits and simple measures of soil and climatic conditions. 3. Soil C stocks in the largest pool, of intermediate particle size (50-250 µm), were best explained by mean annual temperature (MAT), soil pH and soil moisture content. The second largest C pool, highly stable physically and biochemically protected particles (0.45-50 µm), was explained by soil pH and the community abundance weighted mean (CWM) leaf nitrogen (N) content, with the highest soil C stocks under N rich vegetation. The C stock in the small active fraction (250-4000 µm) was explained by a wide range of variables: MAT, mean annual precipitation, mean growing season length, soil pH and CWM specific leaf area; stocks were higher under vegetation with thick and/or dense leaves. 4. Testing the models describing these fractions against data from an independent English region indicated moderately strong correlation between predicted and actual values and no systematic bias, with the exception of the active fraction, for which predictions were inaccurate. 5. Synthesis and Applications: Validation indicates that readily available climate, soils and plant survey data can be effective in making local- to landscape-scale (1-100,000 km2) soil C stock predictions. Such predictions are a crucial component of effective management strategies to protect C stocks and enhance soil C sequestration.

Five zones along a transect of 180 m were selected for study on the Island of Pai Matos (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Four of the zones are colonised by vascular plants (Spartina SP, Laguncularia LG, Avicennia AV and Rhizophora RH) and were denominated soils, and the other zone, which lacks vegetation, was denominated sediment (SD). The geochemical conditions differed significantly in soils and sediment and also at different depths. The soils were oxic (Eh > 350 mV) or suboxic (Eh: 350-100 mV) at the surface and anoxic (Eh < 100 mV) at depth, whereas in the sediment anoxic conditions prevailed at all depths, but with a lower concentration of sulphides in the pore water and pyrite in the solid fraction. Under these geochemical conditions Fe is retained in the soils, while the Mn tends to be mobilized and lost. The most abundant form of iron oxyhydroxide was lepidocrocite (mean concentration for all sites and depths, 45 +/- 19 mu mol g(-1)), followed by goethite (30 19 mu mol g(-1))and ferrihydrite (19 +/- 11 mu mol g(-1)),with significant differences among the mean concentrations. There was a significant decrease with depth in all the types of Fe oxyhydroxides measured, particularly the poorly crystalline forms. The pyrite fraction was an important component of the free Fe pool (non-silicate Fe) in all soils as well as in the sediment, especially below 20 cm depth (mean concentration for all sites and depths, 60 +/- 54 mu mol CI). Furthermore, the mean concentration of Fe-pyrite for all sites and depths was higher than that obtained for any of the three Fe oxyhydroxides measured. The Fe-AVS was a minor fraction, indicating that the high concentrations of dissolved Fe in the soils in the upper area of the transect result from the oxidation of Fe sulphides during low tide. Mossbauer spectroscopy also revealed that most of the Fe (III) was associated with silicates, in this case nontronite. The presence of crystals of pyrite associated with phyllosilicates in samples from the upper layer of the soils may indicate that pyritization of this form of Fe(III) is more rapid than usually reported for ocean bed sediments. The sequential extraction of Mn did not reveal any clearly dominant fraction, with the Mn-carbonate fraction being the most prevalent, followed by exchangeable Mn and oxides of Mn, whereas pyrite-Mn and Mn associated with crystalline Fe-oxides were present at significantly lower concentrations. The high concentration of dissolved Mn found in the soils in the lower part of the transect is consistent with the fact that the solubility is determined by the carbonate fraction. Unlike for Fe, in the soils in the higher zone, which are subject to intense drainage during low tide, there was loss of Mn, as reflected by the concentration of total Mn. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. O trabalho foi realizado, no período de outubro a dezembro de 1996. Foram utilizadas 80 fêmeas híbridas F1, oriundas de cruzamentos de Landrace e Large White distribuídas aleatoriamente em quatro tratamentos: T1 – fornecimento de ração sem glicose e de forma restrita, 2 kg ao dia (duas vezes ao dia); T2 – fornecimento de ração sem glicose e à vontade; T3 – fornecimento de ração com 20% de glicose e de forma restrita, 2 kg ao dia (duas vezes ao dia), e, T4 – fornecimento de ração com 20% de sacarose, à vontade. Como fonte de glicose foi utilizado o açúcar cristal. A ração continha 3.150 kcal/Kg de E.D., 14%, de proteína bruta, 0,65 de lisina, 0,9% de cálcio e 0,45% de fósforo disponível. Todas as fêmeas foram pesadas individualmente ao alojamento e na apresentação do 10 e do 20 estro. Os tratamentos foram aplicados no momento em que as fêmeas manifestaram o 10 estro e terminaram quando estas apresentaram o 20 estro. As fêmeas foram inseminadas artificialmente (IA) no 20 estro e abatidas 28-34 dias após para a contagem do número de ovulações e número de embriões viáveis. Foram analisados, os dados referentes à taxa de prenhez, a taxa de sobrevivência embrionária e a taxa de retorno ao estro. A taxa de ovulação das fêmeas do T4 foi superior aquelas das fêmeas dos T1 e T3 (respectivamente 17,80; 15,26; 15,60) (p0,01). T4 foram diferentes quanto ao número de embriões viáveis daquelas do T1 (1,94 a mais; p0,03), do T2 (1,27 a mais; p0,05) e do T3 (3,6 a mais; p0,01). Na análise do contraste ração restrita (T1 e T3) vs. ração à vontade (T2 e T4), foi observada um aumento do número de ovulações (15,38 vs 17, 34, respectivamente; p<0,01) e também no número de embriões viáveis (11,52 vs 13,64, respectivamente; p<0,04). As fêmeas que receberam ração com açúcar (T3 e T4) não diferiram (p>0,05) dos que receberam ração sem açúcar (T1 e T2), nas variáveis estudadas. O arraçoamento à vontade, independente da adição de sacarose, foi efetivo no aumento do número médio de ovulações e número médio de embriões viáveis. Apesar do maior número de ovulações, a taxa de sobrevivência embrionária não foi diferente entre os tratamentos. As taxas de prenhez e retorno ao estro também não apresentaram diferenças as fêmeas dos diferentes tratamentos.

Determinou-se os efeitos da convivência com plantas de maria-pretinha sobre a produtividade do tomateiro industrial, híbrido Heinz 9992, em um experimento com dois grupos de tratamentos: no primeiro, o tomate permaneceu livre da competição (60 mil plantas ha-1 de maria-pretinha) do transplantio até 15; 30; 45; 60; 75; 90; 105 e 120 dias (colheita); no segundo, a cultura permaneceu em competição com a maria-pretinha do transplantio até os mesmos períodos citados. Utilizaram-se blocos casualizados, três repetições e parcelas de quatro linhas. Altura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea da maria-pretinha foram obtidas a partir de amostras de dez plantas. A área foliar das plantas de maria-pretinha cresceu até 75 dias de convivência com as plantas de tomate (1.588 dm² planta-1), a altura até 60 dias de convivência (85 cm) e a massa seca da parte aérea até 120 dias de convivência (31,7 g planta-1). As produtividades mais alta (108,6 t ha-1 ou 87,6% da produção total de frutos) e mais baixa (14,2 t ha-1; 59,0%) de frutos maduros de tomate foram observadas quando a convivência entre tomate e maria-pretinha ocorreu respectivamente apenas nos 15 primeiros dias e ao longo de todo o ciclo do tomate. Nestes tratamentos, o peso médio de frutos maduros foi de respectivamente 58,7 e 38,0 g. Verificou-se que cada cm² de acréscimo em área foliar das plantas de maria-pretinha causou uma redução de 0,04 t ha-1 na produção de frutos maduros (PFM) (R² = 0,90), cada centímetro em altura da planta daninha reduziu 0,82 t ha-1 na PFM (R² = 0,78) e cada grama de acréscimo em massa seca de caules e folhas da planta daninha causou uma redução de 2,84 t ha-1 PFM (R² = 0,97). O período anterior à interferência, considerando-se a redução na produtividade do tomate em 5%, foi de 27 dias após o transplantio (DAT) da cultura; o período total de prevenção à interferência foi de 46 DAT e, o período crítico de prevenção à interferência, de 27 a 46 DAT.

The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of induced testicular degeneration in Bos taurus indicus (Nellore) bulls on changes in seminal characteristics and fertilizing ability of sperm. Four Nellore bulls (30-36-month-old, 500-550 kg) with good seminal quality (> 80% motile and morphologically normal sperm) had serotal insulation applied for 5 d. Semen was collected by electroejaculation and cryopreserved at a the pre-insulation moment, and 7, 14, and 21 d after insulation was removed. Gross motility, vigor of sperm movement (1-5), acrosome integrity, sperm morphology (phase-contrast microscopy), nuclear vacuoles and abnormal chromatin (Feulgen-stain) were determined after sperm preparations for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Prior to IVF, sperm were separated using a Percoll gradient (45% and 90%). Normal sperm decreased (P < 0.05) 14 and 21 d after insulation was removed. on 14 and 21 d, the incidence of head defects (9.7 +/- 0.6 and 17.0 +/- 0.8, respectively; mean +/- S.E.M) was higher (P < 0.05) in agreement with the incidence of nuclear vauoles (14.0 +/- 5.0 and 12.3 +/- 2.3) and abnormal chromatin (24.4 +/- 7.2 and 30.8 +/- 2.8). Although the frequency of cleaved oocytes decreased only on 21 d (P < 0.05), blastocyst rates were lower (P < 0.05) than pre-insulation on 14 and 21 d. In regression analyses, only nuclear vacuoles, head defects and intact acrosome accounted for differences in cleavage (R(2) = 0.38, 0.48, and 0.30, respectively) and blastocyst rates (R(2) = 0.35, 0.37, and 0.44). Abnormal chromatin was associated only with blastocyst rates (R(2) = 0.35). In conclusion, blastocyst rate was more sensitive than cleavage rate and the assessment of nuclear integrity is recommended to predict the fertilizing ability of bull sperm. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Este estudo foi realizado no Núcleo de Pesquisas Avançadas em Matologia da FCA/UNESP, campus de Botucatu-SP, com o objetivo de avaliar o controle de Egeria densa e Egeria najas, utilizando o herbicida diquat. As doses do herbicida para ambas as espécies foram: 0,1; 0,25; 0,5; 1,0; e 1,5 ppm, além de uma testemunha sem aplicação do herbicida. As parcelas experimentais foram constituídas por caixas-d'água de 0,60 m de diâmetro por 1,10 m de profundidade, contendo 300 litros de água, as quais foram colocadas a pleno sol, com 15 plantas de cada espécie. A aplicação ocorreu com as plantas apresentando 70 cm de comprimento. O controle foi avaliado visualmente aos 5, 7, 10, 14, 26, 31, 38 e 45 dias após a aplicação dos herbicidas, por meio de uma escala percentual de notas, em que zero correspondia a nenhum controle e 100% ao controle total das plantas. Para Egeria najas, 0,5 ppm de diquat foi o suficiente para determinar controle total das plantas, e não ocorreram rebrotas posteriormente. Nas plantas de Egeria densa ocorreram rebrotas a partir dos 45 dias após a aplicação do herbicida diquat, com maior intensidade nas doses menores; uma reaplicação de 0,5 ppm determinou também a morte completa das plantas.

We have shown that myocardial dysfunction induced by food restriction is related to calcium handling. Although cardiac function is depressed in food-restricted animals, there is limited information about the molecular mechanisms that lead to this abnormality. The present study evaluated the effects of food restriction on calcium cycling, focusing on sarcoplasmic Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2), phospholamban (PLB), and ryanodine channel (RYR2) mRNA expressions in rat myocardium. Male Wistar-Kyoto rats, 60 days old, were submitted to ad libitum feeding (control rats) or 50% diet restriction for 90 days. The levels of left ventricle SERCA2, PLB, and RYR2 were measured using semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Body and ventricular weights were reduced in 50% food-restricted animals. RYR2 mRNA was significantly decreased in the left ventricle of the food-restricted group (control = 5.92 +/- 0.48 vs food-restricted group = 4.84 +/- 0.33, P < 0.01). The levels of SERCA2 and PLB mRNA were similar between groups (control = 8.38 +/- 0.44 vs food-restricted group = 7.96 +/- 0.45, and control = 1.52 +/- 0.06 vs food-restricted group = 1.53 +/- 0.10, respectively). Down-regulation of RYR2 mRNA expressions suggests that chronic food restriction promotes abnormalities in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ release.

This study had to aimed to characterize the sediments of shallow continental shelf and realize the mapping of features visible for satellite images by using remote sensing techniques, digital image processing and analysis of bathymetry between Maxaranguape and Touros - RN. The study s area is located in the continental shallow shelf of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and is part of the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Coral Reefs. A total of 1186 sediment samples were collected using a dredge type van veen and positioning of the vessel was made out with the aid of a Garmin 520s. The samples were treated In the laboratory to analyze particle size of the sediment, concentration of calcium carbonate and biogenic composition. The digital images from the Landsat-5 TM were used to mapping of features. This stage was used the band 1 (0,45-1,52 μm) where the image were georeferenced, and then adjusting the histogram, giving a better view of feature bottom and contacts between different types of bottom. The results obtained from analysis of the sediment showed that the sediments of the continental shelf east of RN have a dominance of carbonate facies and a sand-gravelly bottom because the region is dominated by biogenic sediments, that are made mainly of calcareous algae. The bedform types identified and morphological features found were validated by bathymetric data and sediment samples examined. From the results obtained a division for the shelf under study is suggested, these regions being subdivided, in well characterized: (1) Turbid Zone, (2) Coral Patch Reefs Zone, (3) Mixed Sediments Carbonates Zone, ( 4) Algae Fouling Zone, (5) Alignment Rocky Zone, (6) Sand Waves Field (7) Deposit siliciclastic sands
