The climate during the Cenozoic era changed in several steps from ice-free poles and warm conditions to ice-covered poles and cold conditions. Since the 1950s, a body of information on ice volume and temperature changes has been built up predominantly on the basis of measurements of the oxygen isotopic composition of shells of benthic foraminifera collected from marine sediment cores. The statistical methodology of time series analysis has also evolved, allowing more information to be extracted from these records. Here we provide a comprehensive view of Cenozoic climate evolution by means of a coherent and systematic application of time series analytical tools to each record from a compilation spanning the interval from 4 to 61 Myr ago. We quantitatively describe several prominent features of the oxygen isotope record, taking into account the various sources of uncertainty (including measurement, proxy noise, and dating errors). The estimated transition times and amplitudes allow us to assess causal climatological-tectonic influences on the following known features of the Cenozoic oxygen isotopic record: Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, Eocene-Oligocene Transition, Oligocene-Miocene Boundary, and the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum. We further describe and causally interpret the following features: Paleocene-Eocene warming trend, the two-step, long-term Eocene cooling, and the changes within the most recent interval (Miocene-Pliocene). We review the scope and methods of constructing Cenozoic stacks of benthic oxygen isotope records and present two new latitudinal stacks, which capture besides global ice volume also bottom water temperatures at low (less than 30°) and high latitudes. This review concludes with an identification of future directions for data collection, statistical method development, and climate modeling.

Stubacher Sonnblickkees (SSK) is located in the Hohe Tauern Range (Eastern Alps) in the south of Salzburg Province (Austria) in the region of Oberpinzgau in the upper Stubach Valley. The glacier is situated at the main Alpine crest and faces east, starting at elevations close to 3050 m and in the 1980s terminated at 2500 m a.s.l. It had an area of 1.7 km² at that time, compared with 1 km² in 2013. The glacier type can be classified as a slope glacier, i.e. the relief is covered by a relatively thin ice sheet and there is no regular glacier tongue. The rough subglacial topography makes for a complex shape in the surface topography, with various concave and convex patterns. The main reason for selecting this glacier for mass balance observations (as early as 1963) was to verify on a complex glacier how the mass balance methods and the conclusions - derived during the more or less pioneer phase of glaciological investigations in the 1950s and 1960s - could be applied to the SSK glacier. The decision was influenced by the fact that close to the SSK there was the Rudolfshütte, a hostel of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV), newly constructed in the 1950s to replace the old hut dating from 1874. The new Alpenhotel Rudolfshütte, which was run by the Slupetzky family from 1958 to 1970, was the base station for the long-term observation; the cable car to Rudolfshütte, operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), was a logistic advantage. Another factor for choosing SSK as a glaciological research site was the availability of discharge records of the catchment area from the Austrian Federal Railways who had turned the nearby lake Weißsee ('White Lake') - a former natural lake - into a reservoir for their hydroelectric power plants. In terms of regional climatic differences between the Central Alps in Tyrol and those of the Hohe Tauern, the latter experienced significantly higher precipitation , so one could expect new insights in the different response of the two glaciers SSK and Hintereisferner (Ötztal Alps) - where a mass balance series went back to 1952. In 1966 another mass balance series with an additional focus on runoff recordings was initiated at Vernagtfener, near Hintereisferner, by the Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich. The usual and necessary link to climate and climate change was given by a newly founded weather station (by Heinz and Werner Slupetzky) at the Rudolfshütte in 1961, which ran until 1967. Along with an extension and enlargement to the so-called Alpine Center Rudolfshütte of the OeAV, a climate observatory (suggested by Heinz Slupetzky) has been operating without interruption since 1980 under the responsibility of ZAMG and the Hydrological Service of Salzburg, providing long-term met observations. The weather station is supported by the Berghotel Rudolfshütte (in 2004 the OeAV sold the hotel to a private owner) with accommodation and facilities. Direct yearly mass balance measurements were started in 1963, first for 3 years as part of a thesis project. In 1965 the project was incorporated into the Austrian glacier measurement sites within the International Hydrological Decade (IHD) 1965 - 1974 and was afterwards extended via the International Hydrological Program (IHP) 1975 - 1981. During both periods the main financial support came from the Hydrological Survey of Austria. After 1981 funds were provided by the Hydrological Service of the Federal Government of Salzburg. The research was conducted from 1965 onwards by Heinz Slupetzky from the (former) Department of Geography of the University of Salzburg. These activities received better recognition when the High Alpine Research Station of the University of Salzburg was founded in 1982 and brought in additional funding from the University. With recent changes concerning Rudolfshütte, however, it became unfeasible to keep the research station going. Fortunately, at least the weather station at Rudolfshütte is still operating. In the pioneer years of the mass balance recordings at SSK, the main goal was to understand the influence of the complicated topography on the ablation and accumulation processes. With frequent strong southerly winds (foehn) on the one hand, and precipitation coming in with storms from the north to northwest, the snow drift is an important factor on the undulating glacier surface. This results in less snow cover in convex zones and in more or a maximum accumulation in concave or flat areas. As a consequence of the accentuated topography, certain characteristic ablation and accumulation patterns can be observed during the summer season every year, which have been regularly observed for many decades . The process of snow depletion (Ausaperung) runs through a series of stages (described by the AAR) every year. The sequence of stages until the end of the ablation season depends on the weather conditions in a balance year. One needs a strong negative mass balance year at the beginning of glacier measurements to find out the regularities; 1965, the second year of observation resulted in a very positive mass balance with very little ablation but heavy accumulation. To date it is the year with the absolute maximum positive balance in the entire mass balance series since 1959, probably since 1950. The highly complex ablation patterns required a high number of ablation stakes at the beginning of the research and it took several years to develop a clearer idea of the necessary density of measurement points to ensure high accuracy. A great number of snow pits and probing profiles (and additional measurements at crevasses) were necessary to map the accumulation area/patterns. Mapping the snow depletion, especially at the end of the ablation season, which coincides with the equilibrium line, is one of the main basic data for drawing contour lines of mass balance and to calculate the total mass balance (on a regular-shaped valley glacier there might be an equilibrium line following a contour line of elevation separating the accumulation area and the ablation area, but not at SSK). - An example: in 1969/70, 54 ablation stakes and 22 snow pits were used on the 1.77 km² glacier surface. In the course of the study the consistency of the accumulation and ablation patterns could be used to reduce the number of measurement points. - At the SSK the stratigraphic system, i.e. the natural balance year, is used instead the usual hydrological year. From 1964 to 1981, the yearly mass balance was calculated by direct measurements. Based on these records of 17 years, a regression analysis between the specific net mass balance and the ratio of ablation area to total area (AAR) has been used since then. The basic requirement was mapping the maximum snow depletion at the end of each balance year. There was the advantage of Heinz Slupetzky's detailed local and long-term experience, which ensured homogeneity of the series on individual influences of the mass balance calculations. Verifications took place as often as possible by means of independent geodetic methods, i.e. monoplotting , aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry, more recently also the application of PHOTOMODELLER and laser scans. The semi-direct mass balance determinations used at SSK were tentatively compared with data from periods of mass/volume change, resulting in promising first results on the reliability of the method. In recent years re-analyses of the mass balance series have been conducted by the World Glacier Monitoring Service and will be done at SSK too. - The methods developed at SSK also add to another objective, much discussed in the 1960s within the community, namely to achieve time- and labour-saving methods to ensure continuation of long-term mass balance series. The regression relations were used to extrapolate the mass balance series back to 1959, the maximum depletion could be reconstructed by means of photographs for those years. R. Günther (1982) calculated the mass balance series of SSK back to 1950 by analysing the correlation between meteorological data and the mass balance; he found a high statistical relation between measured and determined mass balance figures for SSK. In spite of the complex glacier topography, interesting empirical experiences were gained from the mass balance data sets, giving a better understanding of the characteristics of the glacier type, mass balance and mass exchange. It turned out that there are distinct relations between the specific net balance, net accumulation (defined as Bc/S) and net ablation (Ba/S) to the AAR, resulting in characteristic so-called 'turnover curves'. The diagram of SSK represents the type of a glacier without a glacier tongue. Between 1964 and 1966, a basic method was developed, starting from the idea that instead of measuring years to cover the range between extreme positive and extreme negative yearly balances one could record the AAR/snow depletion/Ausaperung during one or two summers. The new method was applied on Cathedral Massif Glacier, a cirque glacier with the same area as the Stubacher Sonnblickkees, in British Columbia, Canada. during the summers of 1977 and 1978. It returned exactly the expected relations, e.g. mass turnover curves, as found on SSK. The SSK was mapped several times on a scale of 1:5000 to 1:10000. Length variations have been measured since 1960 within the OeAV glacier length measurement programme. Between 1965 and 1981, there was a mass gain of 10 million cubic metres. With a time lag of 10 years, this resulted in an advance until the mid-1980s. Since 1982 there has been a distinct mass loss of 35 million cubic metres by 2013. In recent years, the glacier has disintegrated faster, forced by the formation of a periglacial lake at the glacier terminus and also by the outcrops of rocks (typical for the slope glacier type), which have accelerated the meltdown. The formation of this lake is well documented. The glacier has retreated by some 600 m since 1981. - Since August 2002, a runoff gauge installed by the Hydrographical Service of Salzburg has recorded the discharge of the main part of SSK at the outlet of the new Unterer Eisboden See. The annual reports - submitted from 1982 on as a contractual obligation to the Hydrological Service of Salzburg - document the ongoing processes on the one hand, and emphasize the mass balance of SSK and outline the climatological reasons, mainly based on the met-data of the observatory Rudolfshütte, on the other. There is an additional focus on estimating the annual water balance in the catchment area of the lake. There are certain preconditions for the water balance equation in the area. Runoff is recorded by the ÖBB power stations, the mass balance of the now approx. 20% glaciated area (mainly the Sonnblickkees) is measured andthe change of the snow and firn patches/the water content is estimated as well as possible. (Nowadays laserscanning and ground radar are available to measure the snow pack). There is a net of three precipitation gauges plus the recordings at Rudolfshütte. The evaporation is of minor importance. The long-term annual mean runoff depth in the catchment area is around 3.000 mm/year. The precipitation gauges have measured deficits between 10% and 35%, on average probably 25% to 30%. That means that the real precipitation in the catchment area Weißsee (at elevations between 2,250 and 3,000 m) is in an order of 3,200 to 3,400 mm a year. The mass balance record of SSK was the first one established in the Hohe Tauern region (and now since the Hohe Tauern National Park was founded in 1983 in Salzburg) and is one of the longest measurement series worldwide. Great efforts are under way to continue the series, to safeguard against interruption and to guarantee a long-term monitoring of the mass balance and volume change of SSK (until the glacier is completely gone, which seems to be realistic in the near future as a result of the ongoing global warming). The surf clams Mesodesma mactroides Reeve, 1854 and Donax hanleyanus Philippi, 1847 are the two dominating species in macrobenthic communities of sandy beaches off northern Argentina, with the latter now surpassing M. mactroides populations in abundance and biomass. Before stock decimation caused by exploitation (during the 1940s and 1950s) and mass mortality events (1995, 1999 and 2007) M. mactroides was the prominent primary consumer in the intertidal ecosystem and an important economic resource in Argentina. Since D. hanleyanus was not commercially fished and not affected by mass mortality events, it took over as the dominant species, but did never reach the former abundance of M. mactroides. Currently abundance and biomass of both surf clams are a multiple smaller than those of forty years ago, indicating the conservation status of D. hanleyanus and M. mactroides as endangered. Therefore the aim of this study is to analyse the population dynamics (population structure, growth and reproductive biology) of D. hanleyanus and M. mactroides, and to compare the results with historical data in order to detect possible differences within surf clam populations forty years ago and at present.

By the nuclear bomb tests during the 1950s and early 1960s, the radiocarbon content of the atmospheric CO, on the Southern Hemisphere rose within a few years from 98 to 162% of the standard recent value and then dropped to 122% (at the end of 1984). This rapid fluctuation was used to determine the lifetime of five species of lichens collected in the beginning of 1985 in the maritime Antarctic. Under the assumption that Lichens assimilate each year carbon at the same rate and that carbon once fixed at least in main branches never will be exchanged later on. The age of mature thalli of Caioplaco regalis, Ramalino tetebrata and Ustiea antarctica was determined to 32 years, while U, aurantiaco-atra and Himantormia lugubris gave an age of ca. 38 years and ca. 60 years, respectively.

Introduction : Before 1998, no one could think about the amendment of the 1945 Constitution. The 1945 Constitution was a product of nationalist who had hard fought for independence from the Dutch colonization. This historical background made it the symbol of independence of the Indonesian nation. Thus, it has been considered as forbidden to touch contents of the 1945 Constitution whereas political leaders have legitimized their authoritarian rulership by utilizing a symbolic character of the Constitution. With the largest political turmoil since its independence, that is, a breakdown of authoritarian regime and democratic transformation in 1998-1999, however, a myth of the "sacred and inviolable" constitution has disappeared. A new theme has then aroused: how can the 1945 Constitution be adapted for a new democratic regime in Indonesia?    The Indonesian modern state has applied the 1945 Constitution as the basic law since its independence in 1945, except for around 10 years in the 1950s. In the period of independence struggle, contrary to the constitutional provision that a kind of presidential system is employed, a cabinet responsible for the Central National Committee was installed. Politics under this institution was in practice a parliamentary system of government. After the Dutch transferred sovereignty to Indonesia in 1949, West European constitutionalism and party politics under a parliamentary system was fully adopted with the introduction of two new constitutions: the 1949 Constitution of Federal Republic of Indonesia and the 1950 Provisional Constitution of Republic of Indonesia. Since a return from the 1950 Constitution to the 1945 Constitution was decided with the Presidential Decree in 1959, the 1945 Constitution had supported two authoritarian regimes of Soekarno's "Guided Democracy" and Soeharto's "New Order" as a legal base. When the 32-year Soeharto's government fell down and democratization started in 1998, the 1945 Constitution was not replaced with a new one, as seen in many other democratizing countries, but successively reformed to adapt itself to a new democratic regime. In the result of four constitutional amendments in 1999-2002, political institutions in Indonesia are experiencing a transformation from an authoritative structure, in which the executive branch monopolized power along with incompetent legislative and judicial branches, to a modern democratic structure, in which the legislative branch can maintain predominance over the executive. However, as observed that President Abdurrahman Wahid, the first president ever elected democratically in Indonesian history, was impeached after one and a half years in office, democratic politics under a new political institution has never been stable.    Under the 1945 Constitution, how did authoritarian regimes maintain stability? Why can a democratic regime not achieve its stability? What did the two constitutional amendments in the process of democratization change? In the first place, how did the political institutions stipulated by the 1945 Constitution come out? Through answering the above questions, this chapter intends to survey the historical continuity and change of political institutions in Indonesia along with the 1945 Constitutions and to analyze impact of regime transformation on political institutions. First, we examine political institutions stipulated by the original 1945 Constitution as well as historical and philosophical origins of the constitution. Second, we search constitutional foundations in the 1945 Constitution that made it possible for Soekarno and Soeharto to establish and maintain authoritarian regimes. Third, we examine contents of constitutional amendments in the process of democratization since 1998. Fourth, we analyze new political dynamics caused by constitutional changes, looking at the impeachment process of President Abdurrahman Wahid. Finally, we consider tasks faced by Indonesia that seeks to establish a stable democracy.

This essay reexamines the great contributions made by Dr. Ali Al-Gritly to Egypt. He was the finance minister for a short period at the beginning of the 1950s and later was appointed as chairman of the Bank of Alexandria. In 1966, he completed a book (Al-Gritly [1966 (1974)]) on the economic history of Egypt. However, the book was banned from publication due to irresistible circumstances. At that time, with Arab Socialism on the ascendance, his views on certain policies were not welcomed by the top political hierarchy. In 1974, the book was finally allowed to be published, and he wrote and published another book in 1977 (Al-Gritly [1977]) on the development of the Open Door Policy and the new economic policies accompanying it.

Green innovation, which enables us to extract energy from food crops, caused a food shortage in 2008. Countries suffering severe damage started to reconsider their agricultural policy with the aim of becoming more autonomous. The food price hike of the time looks like a reversal of the celebrated Singer-Prebisch thesis proposed in the 1950s. This paper examines the consequences of this trend on the comparative advantages and development strategies of developing countries. For that purpose, first, trends and short-run fluctuations in the prices of fuel and bio-energy crops are investigated. It is shown that the price series of fuels and the crops are synchronized only after the fuel extracting technology came into effect. Second, the reversal of the Singer-Prebisch thesis is underpinned by the generic form of an endogenous growth model developed by Rebelo (1991). It is shown that as an economy grows, appreciation of the non-reproducible, such as mineral resources and raw labor, over the reproducible, such as capital goods, is the norm rather than an anomaly. Third, the consequences of the food price hike and underlying capital accumulation on the development strategies of labor-abundant and low-income countries are explored. It is concluded that the impact of the food price hikes on the alteration of a development strategy is only incremental, without reinforcement from raw-labor-saving innovation. A case study of inventions by JUKI Corporation, a world-leader in the sewing machine market exemplifies the fact that, of all the major inventions the company have made, raw-labor-saving inventions have not dominated, although JUKI's machines are sold to one of the most raw-labor-intensive industries.

This paper explores the attempts to co-ordinate rural resistance and struggles in South Africa during apartheid through a case study of the Association for Rural Advancement (AFRA), a land NGO established in Natal in 1979. It was a small group but had a significant local and national impact. The paper addresses three key questions concerning the character and works of AFRA: (1) What was the character and strategy of AFRA in the politicised context of the late 1970s and 1980s? (2) Was there any historical continuity and discontinuity with early attempts by Natal liberals and African landowners to organise anti-removal campaigns in the 1950s? (3) How and to what extent could AFRA negotiate the increasing influence of the Inkatha and KwaZulu government over Natal rural communities? The paper aims to serve as a critical evaluation of AFRA's strategies and activities, and its relationship with rural communities up to 1990 when land movements became nationwide.

The Arab monarchies of the Gulf have been undergoing striking socio-economic changes caused by the ending of the rent-based welfare state model on which they had largely relied since the 1950s. In this perspective, this paper aims at examining the comparative role of local business communities in affecting the orientations and the outcomes of the policies implemented during the period of high oil prices in the 2000s. This paper pays a special attention to the impact of the Arab Spring on the state-business relations in two of the smaller Gulf monarchies (Bahrain and Oman).

En los años 50 y 60 del siglo XX se produjo en Europa un cambio en la concepción de los sistemas de riego, en los cuales se pasó del regadío por superficie al presurizado y con ello del riego por turnos al riego a la demanda. Las ventajas de este nuevo sistema de riego dieron lugar a una gran expansión de las redes colectivas de riego a presión, especialmente en los países del arco mediterráneo y del Sur de Europa (Francia, España, Italia, Portugal y Grecia). Desde entonces el riego presurizado a la demanda ha tenido una evolución permanente, en la que han mejorado los equipos y las técnicas de aplicación del riego, siempre con una clara orientación hacía el incremento de la productividad. Esta evolución unida a los vaivenes de los mercados, al abaratamiento de los transportes y la globalización, y a las subvenciones agrícolas, ha propiciado que las alternativas de cultivos previstas hayan sufrido cambios. El cambio de la alternativa de cultivos hacia otros más exigentes desde el punto de vista de las necesidades hídricas tiene como consecuencia el aumento de los consumos, circunstancia para cual debe estar capacitada la red. Otros fenómenos como el cambio climático, de amplio interés a día de hoy, presentan algunos escenarios en lo que se prevé un incremento de las temperaturas que unido a una reducción en las precipitaciones, supondría también que se elevarían las necesidades de riego de los cultivos. Todas estas circunstancias deben ser contempladas en la redacción de los proyectos de transformación de nuevas zonas regables y en los de modernización de las existentes. Las redes de riego deben estar dimensionadas para poder atender dichos incrementos de consumo. La fortaleza de la red para atender variaciones en las demandas de agua se convierte por tanto en una premisa del proyecto. Dicha fortaleza se puede conseguir de formas diferentes y a costos distintos, puesto que en el proceso de dimensionamiento estadístico de los caudales circulantes en punta de campaña intervienen muchas variables y parámetros de riego. En la presente tesis doctoral se analiza en detalle el estado del arte en la materia, se efectúa un análisis de la función específica y la influencia en el cálculo de cada uno de los parámetros, se establece un procedimiento de actuación que optimice el dimensionamiento de la red colectiva para que ésta disponga de la robustez necesaria para hacer frente a incrementos potenciales de consumo de agua sobre la previsiones de base del proyecto y se establecen los criterios, rangos y combinaciones de parámetros que permiten dotar a la red de la fortaleza necesaria de la manera más eficiente posible. During the 1950s and 1960s the design of irrigation systems in Europe underwent change. Traditional surface irrigation was replaced by pressure irrigation, with the delivery method shifting from a scheduled type to an on-demand one. The advantages obtained with this new system led to a significant development of on-demand pressurised irrigation districts, especially in the Southern countries (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain). On-demand pressurised irrigation has since evolved in a continuous manner in which, with the purpose of gaining productivity, on-farm equipment and automation instruments have seen improvements. Such developments, along with market fluctuations, reductions in transport costs, globalisation and the influence of agricultural subsidies, have resulted in changes in the crop pattern. The farming of new crops may require more water and the consumption may become greater. In addition to this, other phenomena, such as the frequently-debated effects of climate change, reveal scenarios in which an increase in temperatures and the accompanying reductions in rainfall are expected. One consequence of this would be an increase in irrigation requirements and subsequent impact on irrigation networks. All such circumstances should be taken into account in both the design of new irrigation districts and the upgrading of the existing ones. Irrigation networks should be of a size that allows them to meet increases in consumption. The robustness of the network, defined as its capacity to absorb increments in water requirements, becomes a key point to be taken into account in the design phase. Given that there are several parameters that influence the calculus of design flows, such robustness may be obtained in different ways and at varying costs. In the context of this, the thesis reviews the state of the art, analyses the role and influence of each parameter, establishes a procedure for checking the design and robustness of on-demand irrigation networks, and sets design criteria for selecting the most effective range and combination of parameters that provide the network with such robustness.

This article explores the mobile small scale of Metabolism by defining its petite architecture, and recognizing its French roots. Kenji Ekuan was the first Metabolist to build petite capsules, hybrid objects of house, machine, and furniture. The experimental approach to form and materials in the mountain shelters designed by Charlotte Perriand, as well as their sensuality, make these capsules –designed for leisure use– characteristic representatives of petite architecture. Perriand was a paradigmatic transnational character linking France at the end of 1930’s with Japan at the end of 1950’s. Paralleling those earlier eras, the current global financial crisis demands once more that architecture turn its attention to industrial and technological development. Petite capsules, as affordable commodities with the implicit symbolic value of shelter, will make possible the independence of the contemporary nomad.

En la década del sesenta en Chile existió una de las oficinas más importantes en el panorama arquitectónico nacional de todo el siglo XX. Sin embargo, su obra no ha llegado a ser lo suficientemente conocida debido a diferentes razones históricas, políticas y gremiales. Esta oficina desarrolló su labor en un período político de consolidación democrática, pero de graves dificultades económicas debido a problemas estructurales, por lo cual, el Estado debió intervenir para llevar adelante los planes de progreso y desarrollo del país. El objetivo del presente trabajo es poner en valor la obra de esta oficina, denominada TAU arquitectos, compuesta por profesionales que desde su juventud presentaron un gran compromiso con la realidad social y un enorme fervor por la arquitectura. Se trata del primer estudio sistemático de la trayectoria de este equipo de profesionales, titulados en la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Chile, en los años cincuenta. El análisis sigue un desarrollo de lo general a lo particular, donde en primer término se esboza el ambiente histórico en que se originó la oficina, para luego estudiar aquellos aspectos que influyeron en su etapa formativa, finalizando con el análisis de sus obras en detalle. El estudio de éstas se realiza en orden cronológico, distinguiendo etapas de consolidación y madurez durante el transcurso de su labor disciplinar. La tesis pone de manifiesto que la producción arquitectónica de esta oficina, fue el reflejo de la utilización de una metodología de trabajo que integraba aspectos de la nueva arquitectura con las técnicas locales, por lo cual presenta ciertas condiciones regionalistas y resalta las características y cualidades propias del lugar. Paralelamente, evidencia que la obra de este equipo respondía al sistema productivo del país, atendiendo a las posibilidades constructivas y al saber profesional de esa época. Al mismo tiempo, la tesis intenta develar las raíces y fundamentos que están implícitas en el diseño de la forma arquitectónica, estudiando las condiciones de la lógica estructural y su resistencia antisísmica, resaltando aspectos como la articulación del espacio colectivo, el sutil manejo del programa, la relación con el lugar y la interesante expresión de los materiales. ABSTRACT In Chile, during the decade of the 60´s, there existed one of the most important offices in the national architectural scene of the 20th century. However, their work is not sufficiently known due to different historical, political and trade reasons. This Office developed their work during a political period of democratic consolidation, with serious economic difficulties due to structural problems; therefore, the State had to intervene to take forward the plans for the country’s progress and development. The objective of the essay is to value the work of this Office, called TAU arquitectos, who since their youth showed a great commitment to the social reality and a huge fervor for architecture. This is the first systematic study of the trajectory of this team of professionals, whom graduated in the 1950´s in the University of Chile in the Faculty of Architecture. The analysis follows a general development to the specific details, where at first, the historic atmosphere of the office is defined and then to study the aspects that influenced the formative stage of the architects and to finalize, with a detailed analysis of their work. The study of these is performed in a chronological order, distinguishing the stages of consolidation and maturity, during the course of their disciplined commitment. The thesis shows that the architectural production of TAU was the reflection of the use of a methodology that incorporated aspects of the new architecture with local techniques, which presents certain regional conditions and therefore highlights the characteristics and qualities of the place. In Parallel, proving that the work of this team, responded to the production system of the country, according to the constructive possibilities and the professional knowledge of that time. At the same time, the thesis tries to unveil the roots and fundamentals that are implicit in the design of the architectural form, studying the conditions of a structural logic and its seismic resistance; highlighting aspects such as articulation of the collective space, the subtle handling of the program, the relationship with the place and the interesting expression of materials.

Dipoli es un edificio plurifuncional localizado en el campus de Otaniemi que acoge los servicios generales del alumnado. Tanto encargo como propiedad pertenecía, hasta 2013, a la Asociación de Estudiantes de Helsinki University of Technology TKK (actualmente conocida como Aalto University), cuando se vendió y traspasó a la propia universidad. La tesis estudia este proyecto (1961-66) como uno de los ejemplos más significativos de la obra de los arquitectos Reima (1923-93)y Raili Pietilä (1926-), quienes se unieron tanto personal como profesionalmente el mismo año de la convocatoria del concurso (1961). Debido a la dificultad del encargo por la dimensión y flexibilidad de los espacios requeridos, el primer premio quedó desierto puesto que ninguna propuesta cumplía con todos los requisitos establecidos. El jurado otorgó el segundo premio a su proyecto junto con Osmo Lappo y solicitó posteriormente a ambos un desarrollo más profundo del mismo. Finalmente optaron por construir el edificio planteado por los Pietilä. En él debía desarrollarse un amplio abanico de actividades sociales como reuniones, entretenimiento nocturno, actuaciones, proyecciones de películas, cenas y bailes, así como servir de comedor durante los meses de invierno y espacio destinado a congresos en la época estival. Además, en dicho edificio se pretendía acoger el Sindicato de Estudiantes de la Universidad Tecnológica de Helsinki y se localizaría en el nuevo campus de Otaniemi a escasos kilómetros de la capital, donde Alvar Aalto ya estaba diseñando varios equipamientos universitarios siguiendo el planeamiento general que proyectó en el concurso de 1949. El elemento más característico de este proyecto es la cubierta, una estructura continua formada a partir de un caparazón hueco de hormigón in situ capaz de absorber dos lenguajes diferentes y generar, bajo ella, un espacio singular con multitud de posibilidades funcionales. Su geometría permite dividir el programa en estancias de menor tamaño sin perder ni la identidad ni unidad formal. La manera en que se iluminan los espacios bajo ella se consigue de formas diferentes: si bien la volumetría de líneas cartesianas presenta un sistema de aperturas longitudinales por donde penetra la luz cenital, en la forma más libre aparecen un conjunto de lucernarios de diferente tamaños y posiciones aparentemente aleatorias que introducen la luz natural por el plano del techo de forma más controlada, apoyada por la disposición de las ventanas perimetrales. El juego de espesores de la cubierta ofrece un conjunto de matices que pretenden resolver los tres condicionantes principales del proyecto, la adecuación de los usos en su interior, la compatibilidad de circulaciones de los usuarios y la inserción en el lugar. La percepción de este plano horizontal atraviesa lecturas múltiples, desde su uso primario de cubrición y cuya distancia con el plano del suelo se comprime para tensionar la grieta de luz al tiempo que ofrece nuevas relaciones con el paisaje hasta convertirse en fachada al apoyarse en el suelo y crear un límite físico entre interior y exterior. El objetivo fundamental de la tesis es entender mejor la traza particular de Dipoli desde una visión rigurosa que amplíe el conocimiento del edificio y al mismo tiempo explique el espacio propuesto a través de las diferentes herramientas de proyecto. Para ello se ha elaborado una documentación de la obra que parte de recopilar, seleccionar y redibujar la información existente desde el estado previo a la construcción del objeto terminado. El sentido de volver al Centro de Estudiantes de Otaniemi, supone, además de ayudar a comprender el trabajo de sus autores, entender el proceso de la historia de la arquitectura finlandesa y detectar relaciones con otras obras más lejanas con las que pudiese compartir ciertos valores, facilitando un entendimiento más global de la historia. Esta investigación se inicia desde la hipótesis que la forma final del edificio y su relación con el lugar, para proponer un tipo de arquitectura que confía en la observación sensible del programa, del uso, de las escalas de los espacios, del movimiento de las personas y su relación y anclaje con el lugar. Y en este sentido, el trabajo se desarrolla guiado por estos aspectos que se manifiestan también desde la influencia y comprensión de otros trabajos propios y ajenos. Para detectar las claves de proyecto que les han permitido la construcción espacial y formal de su arquitectura, entendiendo éstas como el conjunto de herramientas y mecanismos que reflexionan sobre una particular composición volumétrica y espacios dinámicos que ofrecen un aspecto exterior expresivo, la tesis se articula sobre dos capítulos principales “Contextos” y “Proyecto y Construcción” donde se quiere estudiar el proyecto en su forma más completa. Esta pareja de apartados aborda la descripción del marco temporal, físico, cultural, personal y profesional de los arquitectos, el análisis y síntesis de la propuesta y, por último, la repercusión del proyecto. Contextos pretende ubicar la obra además de facilitar la comprensión del conjunto de aspectos y condicionantes que determinaron la materialización de Dipoli. Este capítulo se subdivide a su vez en cinco apartados: Contexto Histórico, Físico y Cultural, Personal, Profesional e Incidencia de Dipoli. El Contexto histórico se centra en la descripción pormenorizada del conjunto de situaciones que influyen en el arquitecto cuando se toman decisiones durante el proceso de proyectar. El objetivo es definir los condicionantes que pueden haber afectado directa o indirectamente la obra. El capítulo comienza subrayando los temas de interés comunes para el resto de sus homólogos finlandeses. Principalmente se centra en la década de 1950 como etapa previa a la gestación de Dipoli. También atiende el proceso de evolución de la arquitectura finlandesa desde finales del S.XIX unido a la crisis de identidad nacional que el maestro Alvar Aalto superará por sus obras pero también por su personalidad y supondrá una gran sombra al resto de sus compañeros en el marco nacional e internacional provocando una reacción contraria a sus proyectos y persona entre el resto de arquitectos. Por este motivo, al tiempo que se gestaba el proyecto de Dipoli emergieron un grupo de profesionales que defendían fuertemente las trazas cartesianas del racionalismo como Aulis Blomstedt o Juhani Pallasmaa y que consiguieron abrir una nueva perspectiva intelectual. Por tanto será inevitable que la presencia del maestro nórdico Alvar Aalto aparezca a lo largo de toda la tesis, permitiéndonos un mejor entendimiento de la carga orgánica y humana de sus trabajos desde la perspectiva de los Pietilä. Posteriormente este capítulo desgrana aquellos intereses que dominaban el marco arquitectónico internacional y que pudieron influir en las soluciones planteadas. Dipoli será puesto en relación a diversas arquitecturas contemporáneas que presentan un enfoque diferente al esbozado por el Movimiento Moderno y cuyo marco de referencias guarda algún tipo de relación con los mismos temas de proyecto. Es el caso del grupo Team 10 o determinados ejemplos de arquitectos alemanes como Hugo Häring y Hans Scharoun, incluso puntos en común con el sistema constructivista del vanguardismo soviético. Estas relaciones con otras arquitecturas matizan su carácter singular e incluso se revisa en qué medida esta propuesta amplifica los aspectos que comparten. En cuanto al Contexto físico y cultural, una primera aproximación al ámbito donde el edificio se sitúa nos revela las características generales de un lugar claramente diferente a la ubicación del resto de edificios del campus. A continuación se adentra en el origen del nuevo centro universitario desde el planeamiento urbanístico de Alvar Aalto y revela tanto la forma de disponer las construcciones como las propuestas que el maestro había desarrollado con anterioridad a la convocatoria del concurso. Además aquí se destacan aquellos aspectos que propiciaron la elección del solar. Prosigue adentrándose en el programa propuesto por el jurado –entre cuyos miembros se encontraba el propio Aalto- y el análisis de las propuestas presentadas por cada uno de los arquitectos que obtuvieron una mención. Por último, se estudian y definen las obras más relevantes localizadas en el entorno físico del proyecto y que existían con anterioridad, destacando principalmente el trabajo de los Siren (Heikki y Kaija) y Alvar Aalto por los motivos desarrollados en el punto anterior. Prosigue con el Contexto Personal donde se seleccionan de datos biográficos que expliquen, en parte, las circunstancias personales que perfilaron su manera de entender la arquitectura y que consecuentemente influyeron en su camino intelectual hasta llegar a Dipoli. A continuación se indaga en la relación profesional y personal con Raili Paatelainen para establecer en qué medida participaron ambos en la propuesta. Este apartado concluye con el estudio de la etapa docente que profundiza en los temas de proyecto que Pietilä presentaba a los alumnos en sus clases de proyectos. En el proceso de comprensión de la evolución teórica y proyectual de los arquitectos se considera imprescindible la revisión de otros edificios propios que se enmarcan en el Contexto profesional. Éstos forman parte de la etapa de mayor actividad del estudio como son el Pabellón de Finlandia para la Exposición de Bruselas (1956-58), la Iglesia de Kaleva en Tampere (1959-66) y el Pabellón Nórdico para la Bienal de Venecia de 1960. Se completa la visión de estos tres ejemplos previos a Dipoli desde las investigaciones teóricas que realizó de forma paralela y que se difundieron a través de varias exposiciones. Nos centraremos en aquellas tres que fueron más relevantes en la madurez del arquitecto (Morfología y Urbanismo, La Zona y Estudios Modulares) para establecer relaciones entre unos aspectos y otros. En esta sección no se pretende realizar un análisis en profundidad, ni tampoco recoger la mayor parte de la obra de los Pietilä, sino más bien revelar los rasgos más significativos que faciliten el entendimiento de los valores anteriormente mencionados. Por último, Incidencia de Dipoli se refiere a la repercusión del edificio durante su construcción y finalización. Desde esta premisa, recoge el conjunto de críticas publicadas en las revistas de mayor difusión internacional que decidieron mostrar la propuesta además desde el propio interés del proyecto, por tratarse de un arquitecto reconocido internacionalmente gracias a la repercusión que obtuvieron sus proyectos anteriores. Se analiza el contenido de los artículos para establecer diversos encuentros con el capítulo Contextos y con los propios escritos de Pietilä. También se recogen las opiniones de críticos relevantes como Kenneth Frampton, Bruno Zevi o Christian Norberg-Schulz, destacando aquellos aspectos por los que mostraron un interés mayor. También se recoge y valora la opinión de sus homólogos finlandeses y que contradictoriamente se sitúa en el polo opuesto a la del juicio internacional. Se adentra en las situaciones complejas que propició el rechazo del edificio al desvincularse por completo de la corriente racionalista que dominaba el pensamiento crítico finés unido a la búsqueda de nuevas alternativas proyectuales que les distanciase del éxito del maestro Alvar Aalto. Pretende esclarecer tanto la justificación de dichos comentarios negativos como los motivos por los cuales Reima y Raili no obtuvieron encargos durante casi diez años, tras la finalización de Dipoli. Nos referiremos también a la propia opinión de los arquitectos. Para ello, en el apartado Morfología Literal se recoge el texto que Reima Pietilä publicó en el número 9 de la revista Arkkitehti para contrarrestar las numerosas críticas recibidas. Se subraya aquellos aspectos de proyecto que inciden directamente en la percepción y razón de ser de la propuesta. Por último, se manifiesta la valoración crítica de dos personas muy próximas al entorno personal y profesional de los Pietilä: Roger Connah y Malcolm Quantrill. Ambas figuras son las que han adentrado en el trabajo de los arquitectos con mayor profundidad y aportado una visión más completa del contexto arquitectónico de Finlandia en el s.XX. Se han interesado principalmente por el conocimiento morfológico que les ha llevado a la observación de los fenómenos de la naturaleza. Se apunta también la falta de objetividad de sus opiniones originadas en parte por haber colaborado profesionalmente y ser amigo íntimo de la familia respectivamente. El valor de la documentación aportada por ambos reside principalmente en la fiel transmisión de las explicaciones del propio Pietilä. El último capítulo Proyecto y Construcción engloba tanto la descripción exhaustiva del proyecto como el análisis de la obra. Al tiempo que se explica la propuesta, se establecen continuamente relaciones y paralelismos con otras arquitecturas que ayudan a entenderla. Para ello, se establecen tres apartados elementales: “El lugar”, “Programa y geometrías” y “Presencia y materialidad física” y se pretende identificar aquellas herramientas de proyecto en las que confía para la materialización de la obra al tiempo que se profundiza en la evolución de la propuesta. En cuanto a El lugar, se describe de manera pormenorizada el recorrido hasta alcanzar el edificio y cómo la mirada atenta de la naturaleza que lo rodea está continuamente presente en todos los dibujos de la propuesta. Se realiza un estudio tanto de la multiplicidad de accesos como del vacío existente en planta baja que forma parte del espacio público y que atraviesa el edificio diagonalmente. Desde aquí se evaluará los espacios intermedios existentes que matizan los ámbitos donde se desarrolla cada una de las actividades. A continuación se enfoca el estudio de la ventana como elemento relevante en la transición de espacios interiores y exteriores para posteriormente adentrarnos en la importancia de los recorridos en la planta superior y cómo las salas polivalentes se acomodan a estos. Programas y geometrías explica la solución y desarrollo de la propuesta a través de los tanteos de la planta. Detecta simultáneamente aquellos aspectos que aparecen en otros proyectos y que pueden haber influido en el desarrollo de la obra. Una vez que han sido estudiados los dos niveles se introduce la sección para analizar las conexiones entre ambos planos, destacando los tipos de escaleras y accesos que propician la multiplicidad de recorridos y en consecuencia el movimiento de las personas. En el último apartado se identifica la geometría de la estructura a través de la descripción formal de la cubierta y sus apoyos en planta para conocer cómo responde el volumen definitivo a la adecuación de los usos. El carácter del edificio a través del empleo de los materiales y las técnicas de construcción utilizadas se indaga desde la Materialidad física. Este punto de vista esclarece temas de proyecto como la relación multisensorial de Dipoli y el concepto del tiempo relacionado con espacios de carácter dinámico o estático. Una vez se ha realizado un análisis de la obra construida a través de sus recorridos, se plantea un último regreso al exterior para observar la presencia del edificio a través de su tamaño, color y texturas. Este apartado nos mostrará la mirada atenta a la escala del proyecto como vector de dirección que pretende encontrar la inserción adecuada del edificio en el lugar, cerrando el proceso de proyecto. El motivo de desarrollar esta tesis en torno a Dipoli se apoya en su consideración como paradigma de una arquitectura que confía en la observación sensible del programa, uso, las escalas de los espacios, circulaciones y su relación y anclaje con el lugar como argumentos fundamentales de proyecto, cuya realidad concreta consigue situar la propuesta en el marco histórico de la arquitectura nórdica e internacional. Además la distancia histórica desde mundo actual respecto a la década de los años 60 del s.XX nos permite entender el contexto cultural donde se inserta Dipoli que continúa nuestra historia reciente de la arquitectura y concibe la obra construida como una extensión de nuestro mundo contemporáneo. Por ello se valora el proyecto desde la mirada hacia atrás que analiza las diferencias entre la realidad construida y las intenciones de partida. Esta revisión dotada de una distancia crítica nos permite adentrarnos en la investigación de manera objetiva. Igualmente presenta una distancia histórica (referida al tiempo transcurrido desde su construcción) y socio-cultural que favorece la atenuación de prejuicios y aspectos morales que puedan desviar una mirada analítica y se alejen de una valoración imparcial. Dipoli, enmarcada en dicho periodo, mantiene la capacidad crítica para ser analizada. ABSTRACT The dissertation defends Dipoli ( 1961-1966 ) as one of the most significant examples of the Reima ( 1923-1993 ) Raili Pietilä (1926 -), who joined both personally and professionally the same year of the project´s competition (1961). Due to the difficulty of the commission by the size and flexibility of the required areas, there was not first prize awarded because none of the submitted proposals met all the requirements. The jury awarded Dipoli with second prize together with a competing scheme by Osmo Lappo. The board subsequently asked for a further development of both proposals and finally selected the one by Pietilä. The completed project allows a wide range of social activities such as meetings, night entertainment, performances, film screenings, dinners and dance to take place while the facility can also serve as a dining hall during winter months and conference center in the summer when necessary. In addition, the building was intended to house the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) Student Union. The University, at the time being designed by Alvar Aalto following his successful entry to the master plan competition in 1949, was located a few kilometers from the capital on the new campus in Otaniemi. The most characteristic element of the project is its roof which can be described as a continuous form achieved an in-situ concrete cavity structure that can modulate two different geometric languages and generate a singular space under it. The building is, in general terms, an unique shell space with many functional possibilities. Its geometry allows the program to split its functions into smaller sizes without losing the identity or formal unity of the general object. The way in which the spaces are illuminated is solved in two different ways. First, while the Cartesian-line volume presents a series of longitudinal openings into which natural light penetrates, the free-form volume shows a set of skylights in apparently random positions that vary in size and that introduce natural light through the roof in a more controlled manner. In addition the perimeter openings are present that relate directly to the nature that surrounds the building. The adaptable thickness of the roof provides a set of solutions that resolve the three main issues of the project: the adequacy of the functions in the interior areas, the complex capability for user flows and circulation and the manner in which the building is inserted in its context. The perception of the roof´ horizontal plane offers multiple interpretations, from its primary use as a primitive cover whose distance from the ground compresses the void and creates a light tension, to the new relationships with the landscape where by the roof becomes a façade cladding and rests directly on the ground to create a physical boundary between interior and exterior. The main scope of this research is to better understand the particular trace of Dipoli from a rigorous architectural view to deep into the knowledge of the building and, at the same time, to explain the space through a series of project design tools that have been used. For this reason, an accurate documentation has arisen from collecting, selecting and redrawing the existing information from the sketching stage to the built object. A through reanalysis of the Otaniemi Student Center therefore provides not only a more complete understanding of the work of the architects, but also leads to a better comprehension of the history of Finnish architecture, which is related to other cultural relationships and which shares certain architectural values which a more comprehensive understanding of general architectural history. This research starts from the working hypothesis that the final shape of the building and its relationship to its place created a type of architecture that relies on a sensitive observation of the program, the use of varying scales of space, the movement and flow of people and finally the coexistence with the natural context. In this sense, the work is developed based on those aspects that are also reflected in the influence of others architects by understanding both their own and other architects´ work. In order to obtain a personal reading of the project facts that allowed the architects construct Dipoli (understanding the facts as a set of tools and project mechanisms that are able to generate a particular volumetric composition and dynamic spaces that at the same time provide an expressive exterior), the research hinges on two main sections, "Contexts" and "Design and Construction", that study the project from all perspectives. This two parts address the description of temporal , physical , cultural , personal and professional framework, analysis and synthesis of the proposal and finally, the national and international influences on the project. Contexts seek to place the work and to facilitate the understanding of all aspects and conditions that led to the creation of Dipoli. This chapter is subdivided into five sections: Historical Context, Cultural and Physical, Personal, Professional and Dipoli Influences. Historical Context focuses on a detailed description of a set of precedents that influenced the architect when making decisions during design process. The objective is to define the conditions that could directly or indirectly shape the work. This chapter begins by highlighting issues of common interest to the rest its Finnish counterparts. The text is mainly focused on the 1950s as a prelude to Dipoli´s conception. It will also address the process of Finnish architecture from the late nineteenth century as linked to the national identity crisis that the great master Alvar Aalto overcame with both his works and personality, being a great drain on the rest of his colleagues. This aspect caused a reaction against Aalto and his projects. For this reason, at the time that Dipoli came into being a number of professionals who strongly defended the traces of Cartesian Rationalism, including Juhani Pallasmaa and Aulis Blomstedt emerged and brought a new intellectual perspective to the Finnish architecture scene. It is thus inevitable that the presence of Alvar Aalto will be apparent throughout the dissertation to allow a better understanding of the organizational and human character of their work from the Pietiläs´ perspective. Later, this chapter identifies those interests that dominated the international architectural framework that could have influenced Dipoli. The project will be placed in relation to various contemporary architectural works that were created using a different approach to that outlined by the Modern Movement. This is present in the case of Team 10 group and with specific examples of German architects including Hans Scharoun and Hugo Häring, as well as some commonalities with Soviet Constructivism. These relationships with other architecture qualify its singular character and even extend how this proposal amplifies those shared aspects. Physical and Cultural Context involves the unique site where the building is located which includes different features from the location of other buildings on the campus. IT then progresses into the origin of the new campus from the urban planning of Alvar Aalto and reveals both the setting and proposed constructions that Aalto had developed. This section also highlights the aspects that led to the choice of the site. I go deep into the program proposed by the jury (of whom Aalto was a member) and the analysis of the alternative proposals that received a special commendation. Finally, I study and define the most relevant works located near Dipoli, emphasizing primarily the work of the Sirens (Heikki and Kaija) and Alvar Aalto for the reasons developed in the previous section. I then proceed with the Personal Context, where a series of biographical data are selected to begin to explain the personal circumstances that outlined the Pietilas´ architectural understanding and consequently could have influenced their intellectual approach to design Dipoli. Then the text explores their professional and personal relationship to establish what extent they participated in the proposal. This section concludes with the study of the Reima Pietilä´s teaching period at Oulu that explores the issues he presented to his students there. In the process of understanding the Pietiläs´ theoretical and design evolution, it must be considered essential to study other buildings that are part of their professional context. These projects belong to the most active stage of their office and include the Finnish Pavilion for the World´s Fair in Brussels (1956-1958), Kaleva Church in Tampere (1959-1966) and the Nordic Pavilion at the 1960 Venice Biennale. We will complete the view of Dipoli from previous theoretical investigations performed in parallel that were spread through several exhibitions. We will focus on the three that were most relevant to the evolution of the architect (Morphology and Urbanism, the Zone, and Stick Studies) to establish a series of useful relationships. This section is not intended to be an in-depth analysis nor to collect most of the work of the Pietiläs´; but rather to reveal the most significant features that facilitate an understanding of the above values. Finally, Dipoli´s Impact refers to the influence of the building from many points of view during its construction and after its completion. It collects the reviews published in the world's most relevant magazines which had decided to show the alternate proposals, generally conceived of by internationally-renowned architects. I analyze the content of the articles in order to establish a series of parallels with the chapter Contexts and own writings Pietilä to clarify if main design directions were clear at that time. The views of relevant critics, including Kenneth Frampton, Bruno Zevi and Christian Norberg -Schulz, are also collected here. This episode also collects and assesses the views of these critics´ Finnish counterparts that generally stood at the opposite side of the international debate. It delves into the complex situation that led to the rejection of the building by the rationalists that dominated the Finnish critical thinking while searching for new alternatives to distance themselves from the Alvar Aalto´s success. It aims to clarify both the justification for these negative comments and the reasons why Reima and Raili not obtain a single commission for nearly ten years after the completion of Dipoli. From the critics we will approach the opinion of Reima Pietilä himself. To do this, in the Literal Morphology section we will see how the architect tried to defend his position. Those design tool that directly affected the perception of the proposal are provided through the figures of Roger Connah and Malcolm Quantrill. Finally, a critical –personal and professional- review of these two very close figures will take place. Despite knowing that both delved into the work of architects with greater depth and provided a complete view of the Finnish architectural context in 20th century, they have focused mainly morphological knowledge which has led to the observation of natural phenomena. It also notes the lack of objectivity in their views caused in part by, in the case of Connah, collaborating professionally and in that of Quantrill being a close friend of the Pietilä family. The value of the documentation provided by both resides mainly in the faithful transmission of the Pietiläs´ own explanations. The final chapter covers both Design and Construction and provides a comprehensive project description in order tofaithfully analyse the work. As the proposal is being explained, relationships of its built form are continuously linked to other architectural projects to gain a better understanding of Dipoli itself. To do this we have set three basic sections: "The Place", "Geometries & Function" and "Presence and Materiality. Construction process" that intended to identify those project tools for the realization of the work while deepens the proposal´s evolution. The Place describes how to approach and reach the building in detail and how the view out towards the surrounding natural setting is continuously shown in the proposal´s drawings. We will study both the multiplicity of entrances as well as the corridor downstairs as part of the public space that diagonally goes through the building. Then, the existing voids in the concrete cave for public activities will be evaluated. Lastly, the study will focus on the openings as a significant element in the transition from interior and exterior areas to describe the importance of the circulation on the second floor and how function is able to accommodate through the areas of void. Geometries & Function explains the final solution and the development of the proposal through the floor plan. Simultaneously it detects those aspects that appear in other projects and that may have influenced the development of the work. Once we have analyzed both levels –ground and second floor- section drawings come into the topic to study the connections between the two levels and highlighting the types of hierarchy for the multiple paths to organize the flows of people inside the building. In the last section the structural geometry is identified through the description of the form and how it responds to the final volumetrical settings. The character of the building through the use of materials and construction techniques inquires from Presence and Materiality. This point of view clarifies multisensory project issues as Dipoli relationship to the dynamic or static character or different spaces inside the building. Once the analysis has been made we will step back to a final return to the building´s exterior to analyze the presence of the building through its scale, colour and textures. This section emphasizes the project´s scale and orientation to find the proper insertion of the building in place. In short, this dissertation has been done by the idea that Pietiläs´special abilities were allowed from a sensitive observation of the program, the creation of a variety of special scales, dynamic circulation and the relating relationship with the project´s location as fundamental design tools. From this aspect, Dipoli could be more usefully framed in the historical context of Nordic and international architecture. The dissertation allows us to better understand the cultural context of the 1960s, in which Dipoli was established since it continues our recent architectural history. The final built form is conceived as an extension of our contemporary world. Therefore the project is assessed through the comparison of the architects´ intentions and the final completed project.

Desde su aparición en los años 50, los videojuegos han estado muy presentes en la vida de los jóvenes. Un mercado que nunca se ha mantenido estático, donde la revolución científica vivida en el siglo XX ha colaborado en su gran evolución. Empezando por un juego implementado en una máquina de rayos catódicos, pasando por las recreativas, hasta meterse en los hogares de cualquier familia con los PC y videoconsolas. Contando además con una calidad gráfica que hace difícil diferenciar hoy en día entre realidad y mundo virtual. Pero no sólo los videojuegos están concebidos para el ocio y desconectar de la realidad. Existe un concepto llamado “gamification”, una técnica que busca el transmitir conocimientos, ayudar a personas con discapacidades, facilitar las rehabilitaciones, etc… transformando actividades que puedan parecer aburridas, en algo divertido. Aquí es donde entran los juegos serios, juegos que buscan tales objetivos. Dado que los videojuegos hoy en día están muy metidos en la sociedad, y cada vez llegan a más público de distintas edades y género. Hemos elegido este proyecto para fomentar la creación de videojuegos serios, a través de un tutorial completo con el motor gráfico Unity, intentando usar el mayor número de herramientas posible. ABSTRACT. From the beginning in the 1950s, video games have played an important role in young people’s life. A market that has never been static, where scientific revolution lived in the twentieth century has contributed to a great evolution. Starting from a game implemented on a cathode ray machine, reaching arcade rooms and then getting into families with PCs and consoles. Nowadays the graphic quality makes difficult to differentiate between reality and the virtual world. Not only video games are designed for leisure and to disconnect from the real world for a while. There is a concept called “gamification”, a technique which tends to transmit knowledge, give help to people with disabilities, facilitate rehab, etc. Transforming activities, which might seem boring into fun ones. This is where serious games take place, games looking for the goals mentioned. Since nowadays video games are completely set in our society, and increasing a wider public with different ages and gender, this project has been chosen to promote the creation of serious video games, through a complete tutorial with the game engine - Unity - attempting to use as many tools as it can be possible.

La Ingeniería Biomédica surgió en la década de 1950 como una fascinante mezcla interdisciplinaria, en la cual la ingeniería, la biología y la medicina aunaban esfuerzos para analizar y comprender distintas enfermedades. Las señales existentes en este área deben ser analizadas e interpretadas, más allá de las capacidades limitadas de la simple vista y la experiencia humana. Aquí es donde el procesamiento digital de la señal se postula como una herramienta indispensable para extraer la información relevante oculta en dichas señales. La electrocardiografía fue una de las primeras áreas en las que se aplicó el procesado digital de señales hace más de 50 años. Las señales electrocardiográficas continúan siendo, a día de hoy, objeto de estudio por parte de cardiólogos e ingenieros. En esta área, las técnicas de procesamiento de señal han ayudado a encontrar información oculta a simple vista que ha cambiado la forma de tratar ciertas enfermedades que fueron ya diagnosticadas previamente. Desde entonces, se han desarrollado numerosas técnicas de procesado de señales electrocardiográficas, pudiéndose resumir estas en tres grandes categorías: análisis tiempo-frecuencia, análisis de organización espacio-temporal y separación de la actividad atrial del ruido y las interferencias. Este proyecto se enmarca dentro de la primera categoría, análisis tiempo-frecuencia, y en concreto dentro de lo que se conoce como análisis de frecuencia dominante, la cual se va a aplicar al análisis de señales de fibrilación auricular. El proyecto incluye una parte teórica de análisis y desarrollo de algoritmos de procesado de señal, y una parte práctica, de programación y simulación con Matlab. Matlab es una de las herramientas fundamentales para el procesamiento digital de señales por ordenador, la cual presenta importantes funciones y utilidades para el desarrollo de proyectos en este campo. Por ello, se ha elegido dicho software como herramienta para la implementación del proyecto. ABSTRACT. Biomedical Engineering emerged in the 1950s as a fascinating interdisciplinary blend, in which engineering, biology and medicine pooled efforts to analyze and understand different diseases. Existing signals in this area should be analyzed and interpreted, beyond the limited capabilities of the naked eye and the human experience. This is where the digital signal processing is postulated as an indispensable tool to extract the relevant information hidden in these signals. Electrocardiography was one of the first areas where digital signal processing was applied over 50 years ago. Electrocardiographic signals remain, even today, the subject of close study by cardiologists and engineers. In this area, signal processing techniques have helped to find hidden information that has changed the way of treating certain diseases that were already previously diagnosed. Since then, numerous techniques have been developed for processing electrocardiographic signals. These methods can be summarized into three categories: time-frequency analysis, analysis of spatio-temporal organization and separation of atrial activity from noise and interferences. This project belongs to the first category, time-frequency analysis, and specifically to what is known as dominant frequency analysis, which is one of the fundamental tools applied in the analysis of atrial fibrillation signals. The project includes a theoretical part, related to the analysis and development of signal processing algorithms, and a practical part, related to programming and simulation using Matlab. Matlab is one of the fundamental tools for digital signal processing, presenting significant functions and advantages for the development of projects in this field. Therefore, we have chosen this software as a tool for project implementation.
