A new species Amphisolenia nizamuddinii Mansoor and Saifullah sp. nov. and a new variety Amphisolenia schroederi var. pakistanensis Mansoor and Saifullah var. nov. are hereby described from Pakistan's shelf and deep sea vicinity during the transition period between the northeast and southwest monsoon seasons.

In this paper we explore the possibility of using the equations of a well known compact model for CMOS transistors as a parameterized compact model for a variety of FET based nano-technology devices. This can turn out to be a practical preliminary solution for system level architectural researchers, who could simulate behaviourally large scale systems, while more physically based models become available for each new device. We have used a four parameter version of the EKV model equations and verified that fitting errors are similar to those when using them for standard CMOS FET transistors. The model has been used for fitting measured data from three types of FET nano-technology devices obeying different physics, for different fabrication steps, and under different programming conditions. © 2009 IEEE NANO Organizers.

Antimicrobial peptides secreted by the skin of many amphibians play an important role in innate immunity. From two skin cDNA libraries of two individuals of the Chinese red belly toad (Bombina maxima), we identified 56 different antimicrobial peptide cDNA sequences, each of which encodes a precursor peptide that can give rise to two kinds of antimicrobial peptides, maximin and maximin H. Among these cDNA, we found that the mean number of nucleotide substitution per non-synonymous site in both the maximin and maximin H domains significantly exceed the mean number of nucleotide substitution per synonymous site, whereas the same pattern was not observed in other structural regions, such as the signal and propiece peptide regions, suggesting that these antimicrobial peptide genes have been experiencing rapid diversification driven by Darwinian selection. We cloned and sequenced seven genes amplified from skin or liver genomic DNA. These genes have three exons and share the same gene structure, in which both maximin and maximin H are encoded by the third exon. This suggests that alternative splicing and somatic recombination are less likely to play a role in creating the diversity of maximins and maximin Hs. The gene trees based on different domain regions revealed that domain shuffling or gene conversion among these genes might have happened frequently.

A study was conducted to investigate the quality of iced fish of different species during long distance transportation. Total bacterial counts showed different species to show different quality deterioration under similar handling conditions.

A study was carried out to determine the effect of 10 or 20% leaves or seeds in the diet of Penaeus monodon , and the extent to which local ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala ) could replace head shrimp meal. A brief description is given of the experimental methodology, and details of composition of the diet, proximate chemical composition of the diets, mean weight gain and survival of Penaeus monodon larvae fed shrimp head meal and ipil-ipil as protein sources, are presented. Mean weight gains for all groups were poor and not statistically significant. Survival rates for those fed 10% ipil-ipil were significantly higher than those fed 20% diets. Wherever the survival rate was high, mean weight gain was low and vice versa. The presence of the toxic alkaloids mimosine in ipil-ipil could have caused the low survival rate.

Field emission properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which were prepared through alcohol catalytic chemical vapor deposition for 10-60s, were characterized in a diode configuration. Protrusive bundles at the top surface of samples act selectively as emission sites. The number of emission sites was controlled by emitter morphologies combined with texturing of Si substrates. SWCNTs grown on a textured Si substrate exhibited a turn-on field as low as 2.4 V/μm at a field emission current density of 1 μA/cm 2. Uniform spatial luminescence (0.5 cm2) from the rear surface of the anode was revealed for SWCNTs prepared on the textured Si substrate. Deterioration of field emission properties through repetitive measurements was reduced for the textured samples in comparison with vertically aligned SWCNTs and a random network of SWCNTs prepared on flat Si substrates. Emitter morphology resulting in improved field emission properties is a crucial factor for the fabrication of SWCNT-electron sources. Morphologically controlled SWCNTs with promising emitter performance are expected to be practical electron sources. © 2008 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Extraction experiments with spiking of C-13(12)-PCDD/Fs were performed with a variety of PCDD/Fs contaminated samples. The extraction recovery of PCDD/Fs was mainly influenced by PCDD/Fs concentration and the sample matrix. Generally, the first soxhlet extraction with toluene has suitable recovery. From the selected samples, only FAMS4 and 5 which are fly ashes with high concentration, the recovery of the first soxhlet extraction with 24 hr. is low, but PCDD/Fs were almost completely removed after 72 hr. The obesity pandemic has become perhaps the most prevalent health issue of our time, with more than 10% of the world’s population now being obese. Obesity can be defined as abnormal or excess fat accumulation that may impair health and results from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. A decrease in physical activity due to an increase in sedentary forms of work, changing modes of transport and increasing urbanization is likely a major contributory factor. Diet is another major factor with the increased availability and intake of calorie dense, high fat foods being of global concern. Notably, with respect to this thesis, over the last decade advances in the field of next generation sequencing (NGS) have facilitated investigations to determine the relationship between the gut microbiota and obesity. This thesis examines the impact of a variety of factors on the obesity associated gut microbiota. Overall the results presented in this thesis highlight that microbial diversity is influenced by diet, exercise, antibiotics and disease state, however it is only through further understanding of the structure and function that we can identify targets that can impact on health.
