Photopyroelectric spectroscopy (PPE) was used to study the thermal and optical properties of melanins. The photopyroelectric intensity signal and its phase were independently measured as a function of wavelength and chopping frequency for a given wavelength in the saturation part of the PPE spectrum. Equations for both the intensity and the phase of the PPE signal were used to fit the experimental results. From these fits we obtained for the first time, with great accuracy, the thermal diffusivity coefficient, the thermal conductivity, and the specific heat of the samples, as well as a value for the condensed phase optical gap, which we found to be 1.70 eV. Photopyroelectric spectroscopy (PPES), in the 400 < lambda < 900 nm wavelength range, was used to study thermal properties of differently doped polyaniline (PAN) films. The photopyroelectric intensity signal V-n(lambda) and its phase F-n(lambda) were independently measured, as well as the intensity V-n(f) and the phase F-n(f) (f being the chopping frequency) for a given A of the saturation part of the PPES spectrum. Equations of both the intensity and the phase of the PPES signal, taking into account the thermal and the optical characteristics of the PAN films and the pyroelectric detector, were used to fit the experimental results. From the fittings we obtained, with great accuracy, the values of thermal conductivity k and thermal diffusivity coefficient a of PAN films of different doping degrees. It was observed that, in contrast with the strong doping-dependence of the electrical conductivity, the thermal parameters of PAN films remained practically unchanged under doping. This apparent discrepancy is explained by the granular metal model of doped PAN. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Y2SiO5 is a promising candidate for oxidation-resistant or environmental/thermal barrier coatings (ETBC) due to its excellent high-temperature stability, low elastic modulus and low oxygen permeability. In this paper, we investigated the thermal properties of Y2SiO5 comprehensively, including thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and thermal conductivity. It is interesting that Y2SiO5 has a very low thermal conductivity (∼1.40 W/m K) but a relatively high linear thermal expansion coefficient ((8.36 ± 0.5) × 10-6 K-1), suggesting compatible thermal and mechanical properties to some non-oxide ceramics and nickel superalloys as ETBC layer. Y2SiO5 is also an ideal EBC on YSZ TBC layer due to their close thermal expansion coefficients. As a continuous source of Y3+, it is predicted that Y2SiO5 EBC may prolong the lifetime of zirconia-based TBC by stopping the degradation aroused by the loss of Y stabilizer.

Thermal diffusivity (α) and conductivity (K) of fresh and dry cured fish at different moisture levels were investigated by a calorimeter (regular regime) method and transient line source technique. Thermal conductivity has a linear correlation with packing density and percentage water content. K values calculated from formula method and line source technique are comparable.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites filled with Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 ceramic were prepared by a powder processing technique. The structures and microstructures of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the ceramic filler had no effect on the melting point of the PTFE. The effect of the Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 ceramic content [0–0.6 volume fraction (vf)] on the thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), specific heat capacity, and thermal diffusivity were investigated. As the vf of the Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 ceramic increased, the thermal conductivity of the specimen increased, and the CTE decreased. The thermal conductivity and thermal expansion of the PTFE/Sr2Ce2Ti5O16 composites were improved to 1.7 W m21 8C21 and 34 ppm/8C, respectively for 0.6 vf of the ceramics. The experimental thermal conductivity and CTE were compared with different theoretical models.

Among the large number of photothcrmal techniques available, photoacoustics assumes a very significant place because of its essential simplicity and the variety of applications it finds in science and technology. The photoacoustic (PA) effect is the generation of an acoustic signal when a sample, kept inside an enclosed volume, is irradiated by an intensity modulated beam of radiation. The radiation absorbed by the sample is converted into thermal waves by nonradiative de-excitation processes. The propagating thermal waves cause a corresponding expansion and contraction of the gas medium surrounding the sample, which in tum can be detected as sound waves by a sensitive microphone. These sound waves have the same frequency as the initial modulation frequency of light. Lock-in detection method enables one to have a sufficiently high signal to noise ratio for the detected signal. The PA signal amplitude depends on the optical absorption coefficient of the sample and its thermal properties. The PA signal phase is a function of the thermal diffusivity of the sample.Measurement of the PA amplitude and phase enables one to get valuable information about the thermal and optical properties of the sample. Since the PA signal depends on the optical and thennal properties of the sample, their variation will get reflected in the PA signal. Therefore, if the PA signal is collected from various points on a sample surface it will give a profile of the variations in the optical/thennal properties across the sample surface. Since the optical and thermal properties are affected by the presence of defects, interfaces, change of material etc. these will get reflected in the PA signal. By varying the modulation frequency, we can get information about the subsurface features also. This is the basic principle of PA imaging or PA depth profiling. It is a quickly expanding field with potential applications in thin film technology, chemical engineering, biology, medical diagnosis etc. Since it is a non-destructive method, PA imaging has added advantages over some of the other imaging techniques. A major part of the work presented in this thesis is concemed with the development of a PA imaging setup that can be used to detect the presence of surface and subsmface defects in solid samples.Determination of thermal transport properties such as thermal diffusivity, effusivity, conductivity and heat capacity of materials is another application of photothennal effect. There are various methods, depending on the nature of the sample, to determine these properties. However, there are only a few methods developed to determine all these properties simultaneously. Even though a few techniques to determine the above thermal properties individually for a coating can be found in literature, no technique is available for the simultaneous measurement of these parameters for a coating. We have developed a scanning photoacoustic technique that can be used to determine all the above thermal transport properties simultaneously in the case of opaque coatings such as paints. Another work that we have presented in this thesis is the determination of thermal effusivity of many bulk solids by a scanning photoacoustic technique. This is one of the very few methods developed to determine thermal effiisivity directly.

The present work reports on the thermo-optical properties of photorefractive sillenite Bi(12)SiO(20) (BSO) crystals obtained by applying the Thermal Lens Spectrometry technique (TLS). This crystals presents one high photorefractive sensitivity in the region blue-green spectra, since the measurements were carried out at two pump beam wavelengths (514.5 nm and 750 nm) to study of the light-induced effects in this material (thermal and/or photorefractive). We determine thermo-optical parameters like thermal diffusivity (D), thermal conductivity (K) and temperature coefficient of the optical path length change (ds/dT) in sillenite crystals. These aspects, for what we know, not was studied in details up to now using the lens spectrometry technique and are very important against of the promising potentiality of applications these crystals in non linear optics, real time holography and optical processing data.

In this work, the light-induced lens effect due to thermal and/or photorefractive processes was studied in pyroelectric (undoped and Fe(2+)-doped) lithium niobate crystals (LiNbO(3)) using thermal lens spectrometry with a two-beam (pump-probe) mode-mismatched configuration. The measurements were carried out at two pump beam wavelengths (514.5 and 750 nm) to establish a full understanding of the present effects in this material (thermal and/or photorefractive). We present an easy-to-implement method to determine quantitative values of the pyroelectric coefficient (dPs/dT), its contribution to the thermal effect and other thermo-optical parameters like thermal diffusivity (D), thermal conductivity (K) and temperature coefficient of the optical path length change (ds/dT). These measurements were performed in LiNbO(3) and LiNbO(3): Fe (0.1 ppm Fe(2+)) crystals with c axis along the direction of laser propagation.

In this work the quantitative theoretical treatment for two beam mode mismatched thermal lens spectrometry is applied to investigate the thermo-optical properties of chalcohalide (chalcolgenides and halides mixture) glasses. For the three kinds of glass studied the thermal diffusivity varied between 2.5 and 2.7 x 10(-3) cm(2) s(-1). Using these results and supposing Dulong-Petit specific heats we estimated the thermal conductivity and temperature ratio of optical path length (ds/dT) and temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT). All samples had positive ds/dT(similar to 3.3 x 10(-6) K-1) and negative dn/dT (similar to -26 x 10(-6) K-1). The difference between these parameters and the change of signal are consequences of the expansion coefficient (13 x 10(-6) K-1) and refractive index (n similar to 2.6) of chalcohalides. In this work the thermal lens, thermal relaxation calorimetry and interferometric methods are applied to investigate the thermo-optical properties of tellurite glasses (in mol%: 80TeO(2)-20 Li2O(TeLi), 80TeO(2)-15Li(2)O-5TiO(2) (TeLiTi-5) and 80TeO(2)-10Li(2)O-10TiO(2) (TeLiTi-10)). Thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat and the temperature coefficients of refractive index, optical path length, thermal expansion and electronic polarizability were determined. The use of three independent methods was useful for a complete characterization of the studied tellurite glasses. In addition, our results showed that the thermal expansion coefficient and the temperature coefficient of the optical path length (dS/dT) were significantly modified with the introduction of titanium, which may be relevant for the application of these glasses in the photonic area.
