In an electrochemical alloying reaction, the electroactive particles become mechanically unstable owing to large volume changes occurring as a result of high amounts of lithium intake. This is detrimental for long-term battery performance. Herein, a novel synthesis approach to minimize such mechanical instabilities in tin particles is presented. An optimal one-dimensional assembly of crystalline single-phase tin-antimony (SnSb) alloy nanoparticles inside porous carbon fibers (abbreviated SnSb-C) is synthesized for the first time by using the electrospinning technique (employing non-oxide precursors) in combination with a sintering protocol. The ability of antimony to alloy independently with lithium is beneficial as it buffers the unfavorable volume changes occurring during successive alloying/dealloying cycles in Sn. The SnSb-C assembly provides nontortuous (tortuosity coefficient, =1) fast conducting pathways for both electrons and ions. The presence of carbon in SnSb-C completely nullifies the conventional requirement of other carbon forms during cell electrode assembly. The SnSb-C exhibited remarkably high electrochemical lithium stability and high specific capacities over a wide range of currents (0.2-5Ag(-1)). In addition to lithium-ion batteries, it is envisaged that SnSb-C also has potential as a noncarbonaceous anode for other battery chemistries, such as sodium-ion batteries.
Thermo-optic Degradation of Single-Modedness in Active LMA fibers and Simple Compensation Mechanisms
Resumo:
We demonstrate significant thermo-optic degradation of single-modedness in active large mode area fibers due to heat generation in the fiber. We propose and demonstrate through simulations, simple compensation mechanisms using custom length dependent fiber coiling.

Companies aiming to be 'sustainability leaders' in their sector and governments wanting to support their ambitions need a means to assess the changes required to make a significant difference in the impact of their whole sector. Previous work on scenario analysis/scenario planning demonstrates extensive developments and applications, but as yet few attempts to integrate the 'triple bottom line' concerns of sustainability into scenario planning exercises. This paper, therefore, presents a methodology for scenario analysis of large change to an entire sector. The approach includes calculation of a 'triple bottom line graphic equaliser' to allow exploration and evaluation of the trade-offs between economic, environmental and social impacts. The methodology is applied to the UK's clothing and textiles sector, and results from the study of the sector are summarised. In reflecting on the specific study, some suggestions are made about future application of a similar methodology, including a template of candidate solutions that may lead to significant reduction in impacts. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The evaluation of mechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers is inherently difficult. Here, Raman scattering-a generic methodology independent of mechanical measurements-is used to determine the interbundle strength and microscopic failure process for various CNT macroarchitectures. Raman data are used to predict the moduli of CNT films and fibers, and to illustrate the influences of the twisting geometries on the fibers' mechanical performances.

Carbon nanotubes have unprecedented mechanical properties as defect-free nanoscale building blocks, but their potential has not been fully realized in composite materials due to weakness at the interfaces. Here we demonstrate that through load-transfer-favored three-dimensional architecture and molecular level couplings with polymer chains, true potential of CNTs can be realized in composites as Initially envisioned. Composite fibers with reticulate nanotube architectures show order of magnitude improvement in strength compared to randomly dispersed short CNT reinforced composites reported before. The molecular level couplings between nanotubes and polymer chains results in drastic differences in the properties of thermoset and thermoplastic composite fibers, which indicate that conventional macroscopic composite theory falls to explain the overall hybrid behavior at nanoscale.

A theoretical investigation of the nonlinear copropagation of two optical pulses of different frequencies in a photonic crystal fiber is presented. Different phenomena are observed depending on whether the wavelength of the signal pulse is located in the normal or the anomalous dispersion region. In particular, it is found that the phenomenon of pulse trapping occurs when the signal wavelength is located in the normal dispersion region while the pump wavelength is located in the anomalous dispersion region. The signal pulse suffers cross-phase modulation by the Raman shifted soliton pulse and it is trapped and copropagates with the Raman soliton pulse along the fiber. As the input peak power of the pump pulse is increased, the red-shift of the Raman soliton is considerably enhanced with the simultaneous further blue-shift of the trapped pulse to satisfy the condition of group velocity matching.
