Lithium-rich manganese oxide (Li2MnO3) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing Pluronic acid (P123) as a soft template and studied as a positive electrode material. The as-prepared sample possesses good crystalline structure with a broadly distributed mesoporosity but low surface area. As expected, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge data indicate poor electrochemical activity. However, the sample gains surface area with narrowly distributed mesoporosity and also electrochemical activity after treating in 4 M H2SO4. A discharge capacity of about 160 mAh g(-1) is obtained. When the acid-treated sample is heated at 300 A degrees C, the resulting porous sample with a large surface area and dual porosity provides a discharge capacity of 240 mAh g(-1). The rate capability study suggests that the sample provides about 150 mAh g(-1) at a specific discharge current of 1.25 A g(-1). Although the cycling stability is poor, the high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the material.

A porous layered composite of Li2MnO3 and LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3O2 (composition: Li1.2Mn0.53Ni0.13Co0.13O2) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing a soft polymer template and studied as a positive electrode material. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores of about 30 nm diameters. There is a decrease in pore volume as well as in surface area by increasing the temperature of preparation. Nevertheless, the electrochemical activity of the composite increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 800 and 900 degrees C are about 250 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 40 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. A value of 225 mAh g(-1) is obtained at the end of 30 charge-discharge cycles. Both these composite samples possess high rate capability, but the 800 degrees C sample is marginally superior to the 900 degrees C sample. A discharge capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a specific current of 1000 mA g(-1). The high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the composite samples. Hollow nanomaterials have attracted a lot of interest by virtue of their wide range of applications that arise primarily due to their unique architecture. A common strategy to synthesize hollow nanomaterials is by nucleation of the shell material over a preformed core and subsequent dissolution of the core in the second step. Herein an ultrafast, microwave route has been demonstrated, to synthesize PdO nanotubes in a single step using ZnO as a sacrificial template. The mechanism of the nanotube formation has been investigated in detail using control experiments. By tuning the starting ratio of PdCl2 : ZnO, hollow to hybrid PdO nanostructures could be obtained using the same method. Conversion of the PdO to Pd nanotubes has been shown by simple NaBH4 treatment. The thermal stability of the PdO nanotubes has been studied. The insights presented here are general and applicable for the synthesis of hybrids/hollow structures in other systems as well.

Uniform Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and nanowires have been successfully prepared through a simple solution-based hydrothermal process followed by a subsequent calcination process without using any surfactant, catalyst, or template. On the basis of X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results, it can be assumed that the as-obtained precursors have the structure formula of Lu4O(OH)(9)(NO3), which is a new phase and has not been reported. The morphology of the precursors could be modulated from nanorods to nanowires with the increase of pH value using ammonia solution. The as-formed precursors could transform to cubic Lu2O3:Eu3+ with the same morphology and a slight shrinkage in size after an annealing process, Both the Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and nanowires exhibit the strong red emission corresponding to the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transition of the Eu3+ ions under UV light excitation or low-voltage electron beam excitation.

A facile and wet-chemical approach was employed to control synthesis of self-organizing, hyperbranched nanoporous Au microsheet with high quality in bulk quantity. This method produced nanoporous Au microsheets with a thickness of 7-15 nm. The microsheets were composed of irregularly interconnected planar Au nanoplates with interstices, i.e. nanopores of 10-50 nm. And the nanoporous Au microsheets were enveloped in 10-30 nm thick polyaniline (PANI) sheaths. The morphology of the nanostructured Au composites could also be easily tuned by changing the concentration of aniline and chlorauric acid. The dendritic and epitaxial growth of nanoporous Au microsheet was believed as the diffusion-limited process confined in the lamellar emulsion phase through self-assembly of aniline and dodecylsulfate. The solution reaction proceeded at a mild condition (room temperature and aqueous solutions), and less toxic reagents were employed instead of extreme toxic and corrosive chemicals.

A simple and efficient method has been established for the selective synthesis of mesoporous and nanorod CeVO4 with different precursors by sonochemical method. CeVO4 nanorod can be simply synthesized by ultrasound irradiation of Ce(NO3)(3) and NH4VO3 in aqueous solution without any surfactant or template. While mesoporous CeVO4 with high specific surface area can be prepared with Ce(NO3)(3), V2O5 and NaOH in the same way. Mesoporous CeVO4 has a specific surface area of 122 m(2) g(-1) and an average pore size of 5.2 nm; CeVO4 nanorods have a diameter of about 5 nm, and a length of 100-150 nm. The ultrasound irradiation and ammonia in the reactive solution are two key factors in the formation of such rod-like products. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analyses (DTA), UV/vis absorption spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were applied for characterization of the as-prepared products.

Substantial progress has been made recently in extending the supramolecular assembly of biomimetic structures to vesicle-based sophisticated nanocomposites and mesostructures. We report herein the successful preparation of unilamellar surfactant vesicles coated with a monolayer of ring-shaped {Mo-154} polyoxometalate (POM) nanoclusters, (NH4)(28)[Mo-154 (NO)(14)O(448)Hi(4)(H2O)(70)].approximate to 350H(2)O, by coulomb attractions using preformed didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) surfactant vesicles as templates. The resultant vesicle-templated supramolecular assemblies are robust (they do not disintegrate upon dehydration) both at room-temperature ambient and vacuum conditions, as characterized by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The flexibility of the complex soft assemblies was also revealed by AFM measurements. The effect of POM-vesicle coulomb attractions on the dimensions of the templating vesicles was also investigated by using dynamic light scattering (DLS).Although origins of the structure stability of the as-prepared supramolecular assemblies are not clear yet, the nanometer scale cavities and the related properties of macroions of the POM clusters may play an important role in it.

The monodisperse array and nanowires Of Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor were synthesized using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by sol-gel method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images indicated that Y2O3:Eu3+ nanowires are parallelly arranged, all of which are in uniform diameter of about 50 nm. The high-magnification SEM image showed that each nanowire is composed of a lot of agglutinating particles. The patterns of selected-area electron diffraction confirmed that Y2O3:EU3+ nanowires mainly consist of polycrystalline materials. Excitation and emission spectra Of Y2O3:E U3+/AAO composite films were measured. The characteristic red emission peak of EU3+ ion attributed to D-5(0)-->F-7(2) transition in Y2O3:EU3+/AAO nanowires broadened its halfwidth.

Titanium silicalites have been synthesized in the TPABr+ammonia, TPABr+hexanediamine, TPABr+ethylenediamine, TPABr+diethylamine, TPABr+TEAOH, TPABr+n-butylamine, TPABr+TBAOH and TBAOH+n-butylamine systems. As-synthesized titanium silicalites were characterized by XRD, IR and C-13 CP MAS NMR. Catalytic performance in epoxidation of propylene and template effect was investigated. It has been shown that both TPABr and TBAOH serve as templating agent in TPABr+TBAOH system. But in other systems, when there is enough TPABr, organic amines or ammoniums only act as the bases. TEAOH or n-butylamine can take the role of template when less TPABr is added. It indicates that the ability of organic amines or ammoniums to direct the Pentasil structure decreases as follows: TPA(+)>TBA(+)>TEA(+)>n-butylamine. Catalysts exhibiting good performance in epoxidation of propylene can be attained using TPABr as the template and ammonia, n-butylamine, diethylamine, hexanediamine or TBAOH as bases.
