This thesis was conducted amidst a growing debate in Quebec and elsewhere about end-of-life options, namely euthanasia and palliative care. Apparently, the public is not well informed about the philosophy and goals of palliative care. This research first aimed to document the norms, values and practices of a team of carers in an independant institution of the province of Quebec. Then, it tried to understand what the representations of a peaceful, harmonious and comfortable death refer to empirically. Finally, this thesis addresses a fundamental anthropological problematic, mainly the transition between life and death : is palliative care, then, a rite of passage ? My data shows that the peaceful death, a version of the good death, is a normative death trajectory, more of a status passage than a ritual per se. It consists for the dying person of showing the very essence of themselves, through the exchange of narrative speech acts. In inviting the dying to do so, palliative care institutions are on the forefront of massive changes in the way of thinking and experiencing spirituality, which is currently shifting from a transcendantal scale to individual immanent experiences.

Cette thèse porte sur trois textes autobiographiques qui questionnent, à travers l’élaboration d’une pensée de l’événement, les oppositions convenues entre fiction et témoignage. L’Événement (2000) d’Annie Ernaux, Le jour où je n’étais pas là (2000) d’Hélène Cixous et L’Instant de ma mort (1994) de Maurice Blanchot présentent le récit autoréférentiel d’un événement traumatique, soit un avortement clandestin pour Ernaux, la mort en bas âge d’un enfant trisomique pour Cixous et la mise en joue par un soldat nazi lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour Blanchot. Ce corpus, quoique hétérogène à plusieurs égards, loge à l’enseigne d’une littérature placée sous le signe de l’aveu, de la confession et de la révélation ; cette littérature porterait au jour ce qui était jusque-là demeuré impossible à dire. Partant de la figure de la honte inscrite dans ces trois œuvres, mais aussi dans d’autres textes de ces écrivains qui permettent de déployer ce qui se trame de secret et d’événement dans le corpus principal, cette thèse a pour objectif d’analyser les déplacements et les retours d’un trauma gardé secret pendant une quarantaine d’années et qui remonte, par la voie de l’événement, à la surface de l’écriture. Sous la double impulsion de la pensée de Jacques Derrida et de l’approche psychanalytique, cette thèse s’intéresse à la question de l’événement à l’œuvre chez Ernaux, Cixous et Blanchot. Dans chacune de ces œuvres, un événement traumatique intervient comme révélateur de l’écriture et d’un rapport singulier à la pensée de l’événement, marqué soit historiquement et politiquement (Blanchot), soit intimement (Cixous et Ernaux). Par l’écriture, ces auteurs tentent en effet de rendre compte de l’authenticité de l’événement ressenti, problématisant du même coup la nature et la fonction de l’événement tant réel que psychique dans le récit de soi. L’événement est ainsi abordé dans son caractère historique, psychanalytique mais également philosophique, ontologique ; la pensée de l’événement mise à l’épreuve des textes d’Ernaux, de Cixous et de Blanchot permet d’explorer les figures de la date, de l’archive, de la mort et du deuil qui lui sont liées, en plus de donner lieu à une poétique singulière chez chacun. Enfin, la thèse traite du rapport entre l’aveu de l’événement et la langue qui, défiant l’opposition traditionnelle du constatif et du performatif, entraîne l’événement du récit, cet autre événement qui arrive en même temps que le récit de l’événement traumatique.

Les territoires et les relations sociospatiales liés au vivre-ensemble entre Autochtones et non-Autochtones au Québec sont en transformation. Ces bouleversements prennent place dans de nouveaux lieux de rencontre où s’ancrent des expériences de subjectivation politique et de citoyenneté. Le Wapikoni mobile, un atelier de création audiovisuelle qui visite les communautés des Premières Nations du Québec pour offrir une formation aux jeunes de 15 à 30 ans, semble s’inscrire dans ces processus. Depuis 2004, le Wapikoni mobile dénombre 2400 participants, 500 courts-métrages réalisés et une soixantaine de prix remportés. Ces vidéos de jeunes des Premières Nations sont projetées dans différents évènements au Québec et à l’étranger ; des lieux où les réalisateurs sont parfois invités à prendre la parole. Cette recherche étudie les pratiques, les relations et les lieux liés à ces actes de parole en personne, afin de dégager les transformations sociopolitiques auxquelles ils participent. Elle montre que les parcours de ces personnes sont limités par les contextes politicoéconomiques locaux, nationaux et mondiaux, mais qu’ils permettent néanmoins l’appropriation de lieux et l’apparition de relations qui reterritorialisent les espaces de représentation(s) et de visibilité. Ces mutations sont provoquées par la mise en place de dialogues aux voix et aux voies multiples qui participent à la formation de territoires émergents de citoyenneté.

Nous soutenons dans ce mémoire qu'il existe, en français québécois, deux sous-types de constructions exclamatives. Située dans un cadre théorique qui participe à la fois de la philosophie du langage (la théorie des actes de langage, Austin, 1962; Searle 1969, Searle, 1979; Searle et Vanderveken 1985) et de la linguistique (la théorie des types de phrase, Sadock et Zwicky, 1985; Reis, 1999), notre analyse porte sur un ensemble de constructions exclamatives en apparence synonymes qui impliquent respectivement les morphèmes -tu, donc et assez (1). (1) Elle est-tu/donc/assez belle! Nous démontrons que si ces exclamatives satisfont aux critères d'identification des constructions exclamatives donnés par Zanuttini et Portner (2003) (factivité, évaluativité/implicature scalaire, expressivité/orientation vers le locuteur et incompatibilité avec les paires de question/réponse), les actes de langage exclamatifs servis par les exclamatives en -tu/donc n'ont pas les mêmes conditions de félicité que les actes de langage exclamatifs servis par les exclamatives en assez. En effet, les exclamatives en -tu/donc imposent une contrainte sur leur contexte d'énonciation par rapport à la position épistémique de l'interlocuteur, lequel doit être en mesure de corroborer le jugement exprimé par le locuteur au moyen de l'exclamative. Les exclamatives en assez n'imposent pas de telle contrainte. Nous démontrons que cette distinction pragmatique peut être corrélée avec des distinctions sémantiques et syntaxiques et concluons qu'il existe bien deux sous-types de constructions exclamatives en français québécois. En ce sens, notre recherche ouvre de nouvelles perspectives empiriques et théoriques pour la description et l'analyse de la grammaire des actes de langage exclamatifs.

This dissertation examines gendered fictional dialogue in popular works by D.H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway and E.M. Forster, including Howards End (1910), The Sun Also Rises (1926) and Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928). I apply Judith Halberstam’s notion of female masculinity to direct speech, to explore how speech traits inform modernist literary aesthetics. My introduction frames this discussion in sociolinguistics, Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, M.M. Bakhtin’s discourse theory, and gender studies. It provides an opportunity to establish experimental dialogue techniques, and the manipulation of gendered talk, in transgressive texts including James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922), Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (1928) and Radcyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness (1928). The first chapter discusses taboos and dialect in D.H. Lawrence’s fictional dialogue. The second chapter establishes gender subversion as a crucial element in Ernest Hemingway’s dialogue style. The third chapter contrasts Forster’s latently gendered speech with his techniques of dialect emphasis and dialect suppression. Finally, my conclusion discusses gender identity in the poetry of Dorothy Parker and Baroness Elsa von Freytag Loringhoven, and the temporality of gender in “Time Passes” from Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927). New Woman characters like Lady Brett Ashley typified a crucial moment in women’s liberation. They not only subverted stereotypes of womanhood through their dress or sexual freedom, they also adopted/adapted masculine idiom to shock, to rebel against and challenge male dominance. Different speech acts incited fashionable slang, became a political protest symbol or inspired psychoanalytic theory. The intriguing functions of women’s masculine speech in early twentieth century fiction establishes the need to examine additional connections between gender and talk in literary studies.

This work considers communicative intention as the basis for rhe analysis of rhe communicative phenomenon in natural contexts. It also aims to reconcile the traditions that analyse human communication today. The convergence with the referential-ecological approach (Boada and Forns, 1989; 1997) has dealt with a number of important problems that the classic referential approach was unable to address. Its system of categories includes new variables, in addition to the classic referential variables. The cornmunicative intention is taken into account, albeit implicitly. Using a conciliatory approach, the study aims to study the intentional dimension in greater depth. The speech act theory (Searle, 1969; 1975) is used to categorize the cornrnunicative exchanges arnong a sarnple of 28 individuals and presents a certain complirnentariety with data from other traditions

Este trabajo se centra en el análisis del discurso político y desde allí analiza la problemática que tiene el aborto en Colombia, con la intencionalidad de permitir a las mujeres decidir sobre su cuerpo sin que sean notablemente estigmatizadas y penalizadas por llevar a cabo una práctica que desde ciertos puntos de vista debe ser permitida para respetar los derechos de las mujeres. En ese sentido, la despenalización del aborto en Colombia se permite en tres casos específicos, por violación, peligro para la vida de la mujer o malformaciones en el feto; bajo estas premisas que han pasado por una evolución discursiva, que no sólo ha afectado a las mujeres, sino a la sociedad, ya que el problema se ha acrecentado y se ha convertido también, en un problema de salud pública. Es así, que desde autores como Bourdieu, Butler y Austin, se crean actos de palabra que desprenden el cuerpo de su lenguaje, crea fuerza en él y permiten acciones que aumenten el posicionamiento de las mujeres en la lucha reivindicatoria que les permita decidir qué hacer con su cuerpo.

This paper explores how the concept of 'social capital' relates to the teaching of speaking and listening. The argument draws on Bourdieu's notion that a common language is an illusion but posits that an understanding of the grammar of speech can be productive in the development of both an understanding of what constitutes effective speech and the development of competence in speaking. It is argued that applying structuralist notions of written grammar is an inadequate approach to understanding speech acts or enhancing the creative use of speech. An analysis is made of how typical features of speech relate to dramatic dialogue and how the meaning of what is said is contingent upon aural and visual signifiers. On this basis a competent speaker is seen as being one who produces expressions appropriate for a range of situations by intentionally employing such signifiers. The paper draws on research into the way drama teachers make explicit reference to and use of semiotics and dramatic effectiveness in order to improve students' performance and by so doing empower them to increase their social capital. Ultimately, it is concluded that helping students identify, analyse and employ the aural, visual and verbal grammar of spoken English is not an adjunct to the subject of drama, but an intrinsic part of understanding the art form. What is called for is a re-appraisal by drama teachers of their own understanding of concepts relating to speech acts in order to enhance this area of their work.

The razors, knives and “tools for cutting” that appear so often in Jonathan Swift’s writings represent linguistic instruments for the performance of speech acts. Swift often imagines them being deployed for some identifiable purpose, typically the discouragement of “fools” or “knaves” by anatomization. Their sharpness is associated with linguistic acuity, and specifically with the refinement, keenness and power of Swift’s own writing. The focus of this article, however, is on another set of associations that Swift attaches to his blades. They tend also to involve ideas of latency, divagation, bluntness, and misappropriation.

The narrative of the United States is of a "nation of immigrants" in which the language shift patterns of earlier ethnolinguistic groups have tended towards linguistic assimilation through English. In recent years, however, changes in the demographic landscape and language maintenance by non-English speaking immigrants, particularly Hispanics, have been perceived as threats and have led to calls for an official English language policy.This thesis aims to contribute to the study of language policy making from a societal security perspective as expressed in attitudes regarding language and identity originating in the daily interaction between language groups. The focus is on the role of language and American identity in relation to immigration. The study takes an interdisciplinary approach combining language policy studies, security theory, and critical discourse analysis. The material consists of articles collected from four newspapers, namely USA Today, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and San Francisco Chronicle between April 2006 and December 2007.Two discourse types are evident from the analysis namely Loyalty and Efficiency. The former is mainly marked by concerns of national identity and contains speech acts of security related to language shift, choice and English for unity. Immigrants are represented as dehumanised, and harmful. Immigration is given as sovereignty-related, racial, and as war. The discourse type of Efficiency is mainly instrumental and contains speech acts of security related to cost, provision of services, health and safety, and social mobility. Immigrants are further represented as a labour resource. These discourse types reflect how the construction of the linguistic 'we' is expected to be maintained. Loyalty is triggered by arguments that the collective identity is threatened and is itself used in reproducing the collective 'we' through hegemonic expressions of monolingualism in the public space and semi-public space. The denigration of immigrants is used as a tool for enhancing societal security through solidarity and as a possible justification for the denial of minority rights. Also, although language acquisition patterns still follow the historical trend of language shift, factors indicating cultural separateness such as the appearance of speech communities or the use of minority languages in the public space and semi-public space have led to manifestations of intolerance. Examples of discrimination and prejudice towards minority groups indicate that the perception of worth of a shared language differs from the actual worth of dominant language acquisition for integration purposes. The study further indicates that the efficient working of the free market by using minority languages to sell services or buy labour is perceived as conflicting with nation-building notions since it may create separately functioning sub-communities with a new cultural capital recognised as legitimate competence. The discourse types mainly represent securitising moves constructing existential threats. The perception of threat and ideas of national belonging are primarily based on a zero-sum notion favouring monolingualism. Further, the identity of the immigrant individual is seen as dynamic and adaptable to assimilationist measures whereas the identity of the state and its members are perceived as static. Also, the study shows that debates concerning language status are linked to extra-linguistic matters. To conclude, policy makers in the US need to consider the relationship between four factors, namely societal security based on collective identity, individual/human security, human rights, and a changing linguistic demography, for proposed language intervention measures to be successful.

Speech acts realization in everyday interaction is seen as an important field to explore the impact of linguistic and cultural variations on cross-cultural communication and second language acquisition. The reported study investigates the use of request mitigating devices in Australian English and Iraqi Arabic. It explores the internal and external devices that speakers of the two languages use to mitigate the imposition force of requests and the impact of the linguistic and cultural parameters on this use. Request samples were collected from 14 native speakers of Australian English and 14 native speakers of Iraqi Arabic by means of eight role-play interviews. The mitigating devices were identified and classified according to a modified categorization scheme based on Blum-Kulka et al. (1989). Additional categories of mitigating devices were added to this scheme to meet the requirements of data analysis. These include consultative device (Blum-Kulka & Olshtain, 1984), questions (Trosborg, 1995), apology (Economidou-Kogetsidis, 2008), alerter (Schauer, 2007), closing (Al-Ali & Alawneh, 2010), and new categories: wish/hope statement and verbal incentive. The results showed that internal mitigating devices were more frequent in Australian English requests than in Iraqi Arabic requests, while external mitigating devices were equally pervasive in both groups. The two groups also used different semantic formulae of some mitigating devices in specific situations. The pervasive occurrence of external mitigators in both groups‟ requests is discussed in terms of volubility as a politeness strategy. It is suggested that the divergence between the two groups in their utilization of request mitigations is related to linguistic and cultural variations between the Australian and Iraqi languages and cultures.

Significant issues, especially miscommunication in a cross-cultural setting and pragmatic failure in second language (L2) acquisition, stem from the linguistic and cultural differences between social groups. The investigation of speech acts realization in everyday situations is deemed as an important field to explore the impact of linguistic and cultural variations on cross-cultural communication and L2 acquisition. This paper examines the internal and external mitigating devices that Australian English native speakers (AENSs) and Iraqi Arabic native speakers (IANSs) use to soften the force of request speech acts in everyday situations. It aims to explore request mitigating devices employed in Australian English and Iraqi Arabic in terms of semantic formulae and frequencies in everyday interaction. Request samples were collected from native speakers of Australian English and Iraqi Arabic by means of role-play interviews. The mitigating devices found in requests were identified and classified. The results showed that internal mitigating devices were more frequent in AENSs’ requests than in IANSs’ requests, while external mitigating devices were pervasive in both groups. The two groups also used different semantic formulae of some mitigating devices in some situations. The pervasive occurrence of external mitigators in both groups’ requests is explained in terms of the notion of volubility as a politeness strategy. It is also suggested that the divergence between the two groups in their utilization of request mitigations is related to linguistic and cultural variations between the Australian and Iraqi cultures.

O desvelamento das racionalidades imersas nas ações docentes de uma escola de qualificação profissional de auxiliares de enfermagem, compõem a área temática deste estudo. No intuito de atingirmos esta dimensão de análise, abordamos as seguintes questões de pesquisa: - Qual o entendimento das docentes sobre o seu trabalho enquanto enfermeiras e professoras?; - Qual o entendimento das docentes sobre o trabalho e a qualificação profissional de auxiliares de enfermagem?; - Quais as ações que orientam a prática docente na qualificação profissional, como indicativos da(s) racionalidade(s)?; - Que dimensões estariam presentes na ação docente que possibilitariam uma ação comunicativa?. A teoria de Jürgen Habermas é utilizado como aporte para as idéias trabalhadas neste estudo. A Teoria da Ação Comunicativa, em sua proposta básica, centra-se nas dimensões de desvelamento ideológico de interesses, uso do conhecimento e da racionalidade na busca da emancipação e da autonomia. Esta teoria diferencia três tipos de racionalidades ou ações: instrumental, estratégica e comunicativa. Na coleta de dados é empregada entrevista semi-estruturada, cujas perguntas contemplam as questões acima delineadas, aplicadas à oito professores de uma escola escolhida intencionalmente. A análise de dados utiliza o método de análise de discurso conforme a Pragmática Formal apresentada por Habermas (1987), a qual se preocupa com as dimensões internas e externas dos atos de fala, nem sempre vinculados a questões gramaticais, valendo mais o significado e a consideração de falibilidade da verdade expressa (Habermas, 1987). A dimensão do trabalho das Professoras como categoria teórica, envolve a atividade docente e de enfermeira. No significado que possuem de trabalho, o mesmo é concebido como um agir-racional-com-respeito-a-afins, uma vez que é entendido como uma relação meio-fim. A divisão social e técnica do trabalho, bem como a fragmentação entre a concepção intelectual e manual, são apresentadas em situações distintas ao se referirem ao seu trabalho e ao das auxiliares de enfermagem. Nos seus atos de fala expressam o descontentamento em seguirem normas pré-estabelecidas, com a rotinização dos cuidados e a burocratização dos serviços. No entanto, reproduzem este sistema hierarquizado na relação com as auxiliares de enfermagem, articulando o seu poder como forma de manterem o controle sobre o produto do trabalho. No relacionamento com profissionais de 3º grau surge a hegemonia médica, assumindo as Professoras um posicionamento de submissão, justificado por não considerarem o cuidado de enfermagem como detentor de saber próprio, além do que o trabalho médico teria um conhecimento reconhecido; outras Professoras, em menor expressão, reconhecem a existência de hegemonia, posicionam-se frente a esses profissionais em uma relação de iguais, questionando-os. A qualificação profissional das auxiliares de enfermagem é trazida nos atos de fala em uma racionalidade instrumental, visando a formação técnico-científica. As ações docentes não trazem as bases de uma racionalidade comunicativa. No entanto, é realizado pela pesquisadora, a proposta de desenvolvimento desta realidade na qualificação profissional de auxiliares de enfermagem.

The dialogue between philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein s notions and Pierre Bourdieu s sociological concepts related to social practice of language shows that the philosophy of language has an important influence on contemporary social theory. When we compare the ideas of these authors we discover that beyond the direct influences from the philosopher that the sociologist recognizes there are great parallelisms of thought. That is, Wittgenstein s pragmatic thought of the use of language does not concern only language, but also every socially built behavior. When we notice that the social and linguistic behavior are borne by the individual in a tacit way, that leads us to theorize about the prereflective dimension that builds human actions and even the habits of thought. The same processes allow the uses of language to build wider social practices. Besides, John Austin, one of Wittgenstein s disciples, and his speech acts theory, contribute with a way to reflecting on how language ressembles a concrete action. Finally, the linguistc therapy that Wittgenstein means to be his philosophical proposal is assimilated by Bourdieu, who takes it as one of the necessary topics of the sociological work
