Within a QCD-based eikonal model with a dynamical infrared gluon mass scale we discuss how the small x behavior of the gluon distribution function at moderate Q 2 is directly related to the rise of total hadronic cross-sections. In this model the rise of total cross-sections is driven by gluon-gluon semihard scattering processes, where the behavior of the small x gluon distribution function exhibits the power law xg(x, Q 2) = h(Q 2)x( -∈). Assuming that the Q 2 scale is proportional to the dynamical gluon mass one, we show that the values of h(Q 2) obtained in this model are compatible with an earlier result based on a specific nonperturbative Pomeron model. We discuss the implications of this picture for the behavior of input valence-like gluon distributions at low resolution scales. © 2008 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The effect of amorphous (am-), monoclinic (m-), and tetragonal (t-) ZrO2 phase on the physicochemical and catalytic properties of supported Cu catalysts for ethanol conversion was studied. The electronic parameters of Cu/ZrO2 were determined by in situ XAS, and the surface properties of Cu/ZrO2 were defined by XPS and DRIFTS of CO-adsorbed. The results demonstrated that the kind of ZrO2 phase plays a key role in the determination of structure and catalytic properties of Cu/ZrO 2 catalysts predetermined by the interface at Cu/ZrO2. The electron transfer between support and Cu surface, caused by the oxygen vacancies at m-ZrO2 and am-ZrO2, is responsible for the active sites for acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate formation. The highest selectivity to ethyl acetate for Cu/m-ZrO2 catalyst up to 513 K was caused by the optimal ratio of Cu0/Cu+ species and the high density of basic sites (O2-) associated with the oxygen mobility from the bulk m-ZrO2. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. The viscosity of AOT/water/decane water-in-oil microemulsions exhibits a well-known maximum as a function of water/AOT molar ratio, which is usually attributed to increased attractions among nearly spherical droplets. The maximum can be removed by adding salt or by changing the oil to CCl4. Systematic small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements have been used to monitor the structure of the microemulsion droplets in the composition regime where the maximum appears. On increasing the droplet concentration, the scattering intensity is found to scale with the inverse of the wavevector, a behavior which is consistent with cylindrical structures. The inverse wavevector scaling is not observed when the molar ratio is changed, moving the system away from the value corresponding to the viscosity maximum. It is also not present in the scattering from systems containing enough added salt to essentially eliminate the viscosity maximum. An asymptotic analysis of the SAXS data, complemented by some quantitative modeling, is consistent with cylindrical growth of droplets as their concentration is increased. Such elongated structures are familiar from related AOT systems in which the sodium counterion has been exchanged for a divalent one. However, the results of this study suggest that the formation of non-spherical aggregates at low molar ratios is an intrinsic property of AOT.

Shell structure is widely used in engineering area. The purpose of this dissertation is to show the behavior of a thin shell under external load, especially for long cylindrical shell under compressive load, I analyzed not only for linear elastic problem and also for buckling problem, and by using finite element analysis it shows that the imperfection of a cylinder could affect the critical load which means the buckling capability of this cylinder. For linear elastic problem, I compared the theoretical results with the results got from Straus7 and Abaqus, and the results are really close. For the buckling problem I did the same: compared the theoretical and Abaqus results, the error is less than 1%, but in reality, it’s not possible to reach the theoretical buckling capability due to the imperfection of the cylinder, so I put different imperfection for the cylinder in Abaqus, and found out that with the increasing of the percentage of imperfection, the buckling capability decreases, for example 10% imperfection could decrease 40% of the buckling capability, and the outcome meet the buckling behavior in reality.

The structure and spin-crossover magnetic behavior of [FeII16][BF4]2 (1 = isoxazole) and [FeII16][ClO4]2 have been studied. [FeII16][BF4]2 undergoes two reversible spin-crossover transitions at 91 and 192 K, and is the first two-step spin transition to undergo a simultaneous crystallographic phase transition, but does not exhibit thermal hysteresis. The single-crystal structure determinations at 260 [space group P3̄, a = 17.4387(4) Å, c = 7.6847(2) Å] and at 130 K [space group P1̄, a = 17.0901(2) Å, b = 16.7481(2) Å, c = 7.5413(1) Å, α = 90.5309(6)°, β = 91.5231(6)°, γ = 117.8195(8)°] reveal two different iron sites, Fe1 and Fe2, in a 1:2 ratio. The room-temperature magnetic moment of 5.0 μB is consistent with high-spin Fe(II). A plateau in μ(T) having a moment of 3.3 μB centered at 130 K suggests a mixed spin system of some high-spin and some low-spin Fe(II) molecules. On the basis of the Fe−N bond distances at the two temperatures, and the molar fraction of high-spin molecules at the transition plateau, Fe1 and Fe2 can be assigned to the 91 and 192 K transitions, respectively. [FeII16][ClO4]2 [space group P3̄, a = 17.5829(3) Å, c = 7.8043(2) Å, β = 109.820 (3)°, T = 295 K] also possesses Fe1:Fe2 in a 1:2 ratio, and magnetic measurements show a single spin transition at 213 K, indicating that both Fe1 and Fe2 undergo a simultaneous spin transition. [FeII16][ClO4]2 slowly decomposes in solutions containing acetic anhydride to form [FeIII3O(OAc)613][ClO4] [space group I2, a = 10.1547(7) Å, b = 16.5497(11) Å, c = 10.3205(9) Å, β = 109.820 (3)°, T = 200 K]. The isosceles Fe3 unit contains two Fe···Fe distances of 3.2844(1) Å and a third Fe···Fe distance of 3.2857(1) Å. The magnetic data can be fit to a trinuclear model with ℋ = −2J(S1·S2 + S2·S3) − 2J13(S1·S3), where J = −27.1 and J13 = −32.5 cm-1.

Molecular dynamics simulations with the Tersoff potential were used to study the response of twinned SiC nanowires under tensile and compressive strain. The critical strain of the twinned nanowires can be enhanced by twin stacking faults, and their critical strains are larger than those of perfect nanowires with the same diameters. Under axial tensile strain, the bonds of the nanowires are stretched just before failure. The failure behavior is found to depend on the twin segment thickness and the diameter of the nanowires. An atomic chain is observed for thin nanowires with small twin segment thickness under tension strain. Under axial compressive strain, the collapse of twinned SiC nanowires exhibits two different failure modes, depending on the length and diameter of the nanowires, i.e., shell buckling for short nanowires and columnar buckling for longer nanowires.

The behavior of the hydroxyl units of synthetic goethite and its dehydroxylated product hematite was characterized using a combination of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) during the thermal transformation over a temperature range of 180-270 degrees C. Hematite was detected at temperatures above 200 degrees C by XRD while goethite was not observed above 230 degrees C. Five intense OH vibrations at 3212-3194, 1687-1674, 1643-1640, 888-884 and 800-798 cm(-1), and a H2O vibration at 3450-3445 cm(-1) were observed for goethite. The intensity of hydroxyl stretching and bending vibrations decreased with the extent of dehydroxylation of goethite. Infrared absorption bands clearly show the phase transformation between goethite and hematite: in particular. the migration of excess hydroxyl units from goethite to hematite. Two bands at 536-533 and 454-452 cm(-1) are the low wavenumber vibrations of Fe-O in the hematite structure. Band component analysis data of FTIR spectra support the fact that the hydroxyl units mainly affect the a plane in goethite and the equivalent c plane in hematite.

CdS and CdSe nanoparticles have been prepared using conducting poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) matrix with an objective to understand the effect of nanoparticles on the polymer matrix using electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. The spectroscopic results reveal that the electronic structure of polymer is strongly influenced by the characteristics of embedded semiconducting nanoparticles. SEM and TEM images show the ordered morphology of the CdS and CdSe nanoparticles in presence of the polymer matrix. Cyclic voltammetry performed both in the presence and absence of light enables us to understand the redox changes in P3HT due to CdS and CdSe quantum dots such as the generation of free radical in the excited state and their electrochemical band gaps.

Due to the existing of many prestressed members in the structural system, the interdependent behavior of all prestressed members is the main concern in the analysis of the pretension process. A thorough investigation of this mutual effect is essential for an effective, reliable, and optimal analysis. Focus on this aspect, this paper presents an investigation of the interdependent behavior of all prestressed members in the whole structural system based on influence matrix (IFM). Four different types of IFM are introduced. Two different solving methods are brought forth to analyze the pretension process. The direct solving method solves for the accurate solution, whereas the iterative solving method repeatedly amends to achieve an approximate solution. A numerical example is then conducted. The result shows that various kinds of complicated batched and repeated tensioning schemes can be analyzed reliably, effectively, and completely based on IFM.

This paper reviews the recent research progress on multi-layer composite structures composed of variety of materials. The utilization of multi-layer composite system is found to be common in metal structures and pavement systems. The layer of composite structure designed to encounter heavy dynamic energy should have sufficient ductility to counteract the intensity of energy. Therefore, the selection of materials and enhancement of interface bonding become crucial and both are discussed in this paper. The failure modes have also been explored in conjunction with stresses at failures and inferred solutions are also revealed. The paper attempts to reveal all technical facts on multi-layer composite structure in a broad field.

Bulk Ge7Se93-xSbx (21 <= x <= 32) glasses are prepared by melt quenching method and electrical switching studies have been undertaken on these samples to elucidate the type of switching and the composition and thickness dependence of switching voltages. On the basis of the compressibility and atomic radii, it has been previously observed that Se-based glasses exhibit memory switching behavior. However, the present results indicate that Ge7Se93-xSbx glasses exhibit threshold type electrical switching with high switching voltages. Further, these samples are found to show fluctuations in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. The observed threshold behavior of Ge7Se93-xSbx glasses has been understood on the basis of larger atomic radii and lesser compressibilities of Sb and Ge. Further. the high switching voltages and fluctuations in the I-V characteristics of Ge-Se-Sb samples can be attributed to the high resistance of the samples and the difference in thermal conductivities of different structural units constituting the local structure of these glasses. The switching voltages of Ge7Se93-xSbx glasses have been found to decrease with the increase in the Sb concentration. The observed composition dependence of switching voltages has been understood on the basis of higher metallicity of the Sb additive and also in the light of the Chemically Ordered Network (CON) model. Further, the thickness dependence of switching voltages has been studied to reassert the mechanism of switching.

The mechanical properties of amorphous alloys have proven both scientifically unique and of potential practical interest, although the underlying deformation physics of these materials remain less firmly established as compared with crystalline alloys. In this article, we review recent advances in understanding the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses, with particular emphasis on the deformation and fracture mechanisms. Atomistic as well as continuum modeling and experimental work on elasticity, plastic flow and localization, fracture and fatigue are all discussed, and theoretical developments are connected, where possible, with macroscopic experimental responses. The role of glass structure on mechanical properties, and conversely, the effect of deformation upon glass structure, are also described. The mechanical properties of metallic glass-derivative materials – including in situ and ex situ composites, foams and nanocrystal-reinforced glasses – are reviewed as well. Finally, we identify a number of important unresolved issues for the field.

A homologous series of alkyl 6-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside amphiphiles was prepared,in an effort to identify the role of hydroxyl group in the mesomorphic behavior of alkyl glycosides. Synthesis was performed by a chlorination of the sugar moiety in alkyl-beta-D-glucopyranosides with methylsulfonyl chloride in DMF, followed by a metal mediated dehalogenation to secure alkyl 6-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosides, wherein the alkyl chain length varied from C-9 to C-16. The mesomorphic behavior of these 6-deoxy alkyl glycosides was assessed using polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction method. Whereas the lower homologues exhibited a monotropic SmA phase till sub-ambient temperatures, the higher homologues formed a plastic phase. A partial interdigitized bilaye structure of SmA phase is inferred from experimental d-spacing and computationally derived lengths of the molecules. The results were compared with those of normal alkyl glucopyranosides, retained with hydroxyl groups at C-2-C-6 carbons, and alkyl 2-deoxy-glucopyranosides, devoid of a hydroxyl group at C-2 and the comparison showed important differences in the mesomorphic behavior.(C)2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
