Australia is a multicultural immigrant society created by public policy and direct state action over a period of two hundred years. It is now one of the world’s most diverse societies. However, like many nations, Australia faces challenges to managing ‘unauthorized arrivals’ who claim to be refugees. The issue of how to deal with unauthorized arrivals is controversial and highly emotive as it challenges public policy and government capacity to manage the multicultural ‘mix’ of Australia’s population. It also raises questions about border security. Given that it is impossible to discern beforehand who is a ‘proper’ refugee and who is not, claims to refugee status by unauthorised arrivals in Australia need to be tested against international convention criteria devised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). There are no simple solutions to controversial questions such as how and where should unauthorised arrivals, and the children accompanying them, be housed whilst their claims are investigated? Moreover, as this issue continues to prompt division and heated debate in Australian society, teachers new to the profession are often reluctant to explore it in the classroom. However, there are opportunities in national and state curriculum documents for the values dimensions of curriculum inquiries into controversial issues such as this to be addressed. For example, the most recent national statement on the goals for schooling in Australia, the Melbourne Declaration (MCEETYA, 2008), makes clear that Australian students need to be prepared for the challenges of the 21st century and to develop the capacity for innovation and complex problem-solving. The Melbourne Declaration informs the first national curriculum to be implemented in the Australian states and territories, and all other national and state initiatives. Its focus on developing active and informed citizens who can contribute to a socially cohesive society implies a capacity to deal with a range of issues associated with cultural diversity, This chapter explores the ways in which pre-service and early career teachers in one Australian state reflect upon curriculum opportunities to address controversial issues in the social sciences and history classroom. As part of their pre-service education, all the participants in this study completed a final year social science curriculum method unit that embedded a range of controversial issues, including the placement of children in Australian Immigration Detention Centres (IDCs), for investigation. By drawing from interviews and focus groups conducted with different cohorts of pre-service teachers in their final year of university study and beginning years of teaching, this chapter analyses the range of perceptions about how controversial issues can be examined in the secondary classroom as part of fostering informed citizenship. The discussion and analysis of the qualitative data in this study makes no claims for the representativeness of its findings, rather, a range of beginner teacher insights into a complex and important facet of teaching in a period of change and uncertainty is offered.

While trends are cyclical, Indigenous perspectives offer continuity to life’s pathways. One of the current trends is the increasing culinary interest in Indigenous Australian foods, not just in restaurants, but also in home kitchens. This is a recent trend despite Indigenous foods being nutritious and wholesome, and sustaining Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Home Economics can support, foster and affirm Indigenous foods both within this current mainstream trend and in the future in life sustaining ways. In order to do so, Home Economics need’s to ensure it is prepared, and skilled, with the appropriate knowledge and regard for Indigenous ingredients, foods and foodways. This paper will focus on Torres Strait Islander foods from the Torres Strait and from mainland Australia. It will showcase Torres Strait foods is the past, present and the future. Some of what is presented here is part of a research case study, which involves a literature review, data collection, and photography. In documenting the history of Torres Strait Island food and foodways, the traditions and customs will be kept alive for future generations, and beyond any trends or fashions.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization at 70 A degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide was used to prepare poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) copolymers in various compositions to afford well-defined polymers with pre-determined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and precise chain end structure. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) were calculated as r (NIPAM) = 0.838 and r (DMA) = 1.105, respectively, by the extended Kelen-Tudos method at high conversions. The lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM can be altered by changing the DMA content in the copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of thermal degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were applied to estimate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These studies are important to understand the solid state polymer degradation of N-alkyl substituted polymers, which show great potential in the preparation of miscible polymer blends due to their ability to interact through hydrogen bonding.

Laser conditioning effects of the dielectric mirror coatings with different designs were investigated. Simple quarter-wave ZrO2:Y2O3/SiO2 mirrors and half-wave SiO2 over-coated ZrO2:Y2O3/SiO2 mirror coatings were fabricated by E-beam evaporation (EBE). The absorbance of the samples before and after laser conditioning was measured by surface thermal lensing (STL) technology and the defects density was detected under Nomarski microscope. The enhancement of the laser damage resistance was found after laser conditioning. The dependence of the laser conditioning on the coating design was also observed and the over-coated sample obtained greatest enhancement, whereas the absorbance of the samples did not change obviously. During the sub-threshold fluence raster scanning, the minor damage about defects size was found and the assumption of pre-damage mechanism, based on the functional damage concept, was put forward. The improvement of the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) was attributed to the benign damage of the defects and the dependence on the coating design owed to the damage growth behavior of different coating designs. La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/Mn3O4 composites can be synthesized in one step by thermal treatment of a spray-dried precursor, instead of mixing pre-synthesized powders. Another advantage of this composite system is that a long sintering step can be used without leading to significant modification of the manganite composition. The percolation threshold is reached at ∼20 vol% of manganite phase. The 77 K low field magnetoresistance is enhanced to ∼11% at 0.15 T when the composition is close to the percolation threshold. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, it is reported for the first time that a carbon-supported Au (Au/C) catalyst for the cathodic catalyst in a direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) was prepared using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) protection method. The results indicated that for oxygen reduction, the electrocatalytic activity of the Au/C catalyst prepared with the PVA protection method is much better than that of a Au/C catalyst prepared with the pre-precipitation method. This is due to the small average size and low relative crystallinity of the An particles in the Au/C catalyst prepared by the PVA protection method, compared to that of the Au/C catalyst prepared by the pre-precipitation method, illustrating that the average size and the relative crystallinity of the ALL particles has an effect on the electrocatalytic activity of the Au/C catalyst for oxygen reduction. In addition, because An has no electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of formic acid, the Au/C catalyst possesses a high formic acid tolerance. After the electrocatalytic activity of the Au/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction is improved, it is suitable to be used as the cathodic catalyst in DFAFC.

It is suggested that a Pt/C cathodic catalyst for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) can be prepared with a pre-precipitation method, in which, H2PtCl6 is precipitated onto the carbon black as (NH4)(2)PtCl6 before H2PtCl6 is reduced to Pt. The electrocatalytic activity of this Pt/C-A catalyst for oxygen reduction is excellent because the Pt/C catalyst prepared with this pre-precipitation method possesses a small average particle size, low relative crystalinity and a large electrochemically active surface area. In addition, the pre-precipitation method is simple and economical and it can be used to prepare a Pt/C catalyst on a large scale.

A new kind of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed in aqueous solution through the pre-formed inclusion complexes (abbreviated CD . C-n) between alpha-, beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) and alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, n = 10, 14 and 18) was prepared successfully on gold electrodes. High-resolution H-1 NMR was used to confirm the formation of CD . C-n. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the resulting SAMs (denoted as M-CD . Cn). It was found that M-CD . Cn were more stable against repeated potential cycling in 0.5 M H2SO4 than SAMs of CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH (denoted as M-Cn), with a relative sequence of Mbeta-CD . Cn > Malpha-CD . Cn > M-Cn. In addition, an order of blocking the electron transfer between gold electrodes and redox couples (both Fe(CN)(6)(3-) and Ru(NH3)(6)(3+)) in solution, M-CD . C10 > M-CD . C14 > M-CD . C18, was observed. A plausible explanation is provided to elucidate some of the observations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

To investigate micronutrient intakes and the role of nutritional supplements in the diets of Irish adults aged 18-64 years and pre-school children aged 1-4 years. Analysis is based on data from the National Adult Nutrition Survey (NANS) (n=1274) and the National Pre-School Nutrition Survey (NPNS) (n=500). Food and beverage intakes and nutritional supplement use were recorded using 4-day food records. Nutrients were estimated using WISP© which is based on McCance and Widdowson’s The Composition of Foods, 6thEd and the Irish Food Composition Database. “Meats”, “milk/yoghurt”, “breads”, “fruit/fruit juices” and “breakfast cereals” made important contributions to the intakes of a number of micronutrients. Micronutrient intakes were generally adequate, with the exception of iron (in adult females and 1 year olds) and vitamin D (in all population groups). For iron, zinc, copper and vitamin B6, up to 2% of adults had intakes that exceeded the upper limit (UL). Small proportions of children had intakes of zinc (11%), copper (2%), retinol (4%) and folic acid (5%) exceeding the UL. Nutritional supplements (predominantly multivitamin and/or mineral preparations) were consumed by 28% of adults and 20% of pre-school children. Among users, supplements were effective in reducing the % with inadequate intakes for vitamins A and D (both population groups) and iron (adult females only). Supplement users had a lower prevalence of inadequate intakes for vitamin A and iron compared to non-users. In adults only, users had a lower prevalence of inadequate intakes for magnesium, calcium and zinc, and displayed better compliance with dietary recommendations and lifestyle characteristics compared with non-users. There is poor compliance among women of childbearing age for the recommendation to take a supplement containing 400µg/day of folic acid. These findings are important for the development of nutrition policies and future recommendations for adults and pre-school children in Ireland and the EU.

Objective: To investigate effects of cryopreservation on sperm motility and DNA integrity. Design: Pre-cryopreservation and post-cryopreservation analysis of motility and DNA integrity of semen and prepared sperm samples. Setting: A hospital andrology laboratory. Patient(s): Forty men attending the Regional Fertility Centre, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Intervention(s): Each sample was divided, and an aliquot was frozen unprepared. Remaining aliquots were prepared by Percoll density centrifugation (95.0:47.5) or direct swim-up procedure and divided into aliquots to allow direct comparison of fresh and frozen semen and prepared sperm (frozen with or without the addition of seminal plasma) from the same ejaculate. Samples were frozen by static-phase vapor cooling and being plunged into liquid nitrogen. Thawing was carried out at room temperature. Main Outcome Measure(s): Sperm DNA integrity was determined using a modified alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay, and motility was determined using computer-assisted semen analysis. Result(s): Sperm frozen unprepared in seminal fluid appeared more resistant to freezing damage than frozen prepared sperm. Further improvements can be achieved by selecting out the subpopulation of sperm with best motility and DNA integrity and freezing these sperm in seminal plasma, making this the optimal procedure. Conclusion(s): Freezing sperm in seminal plasma improves postthaw motility and DNA integrity.

The spontaneous formation of the neurotoxic carcinogen acrylamide in a wide range of cooked foods has recently been discovered. These foods include bread and other bakery products, crisps, chips, breakfast cereals, and coffee. To date, the diminutive size of acrylamide (71.08Da) has prevented the development of screening immunoassays for this chemical. In this study, a polyclonal antibody capable of binding the carcinogen was produced by the synthesis of an immunogen comprising acrylamide derivatised with 3-mercaptobenzoic acid (3-MBA), and its conjugation to the carrier protein bovine thyroglobulin. Antiserum from the immunised rabbit was harvested and fully characterised. it displayed no binding affinity for acrylamide or 3-MBA but had a high affinity for 3-MBA-derivitised acrylamide. The antisera produced was utilised in the development of an ELISA based detection system for acrylamide. Spiked water samples were assayed for acrylamide content using a previously published extraction method validated for coffee, crispbread, potato, milk chocolate and potato crisp matrices. Extracted acrylamide was then subjected to a rapid 1-h derivatisation with 3-MBA, pre-analysis. The ELISA was shown to have a high specificity for acrylamide, with a limit of detection in water samples of 65.7 mu g kg(-1), i.e. potentially suitable for acrylamide detection in a wide range of food commodities. Future development of this assay will increase sensitivity further. This is the first report of an immunoassay capable of detecting the carcinogen, as its small size has necessitated current analytical detection via expensive, slower, physico-chemical techniques such as Gas or Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry. The possible adverse effects on health of diet-derived advanced glycation endproducts (AGES) and advanced lipoxidation endproducts (ALES) is of current interest. This study had the objective of determining the effects of the addition of AGE/ALE inhibitors and different types of sugar and cooking oil on N-epsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) and N-epsilon-(carboxyethyl)lysine (CEL) formation in model foods (sponge cakes). The cake baked using glucose produced the highest level of CML (2.07 +/- 0.24 mmol/mol lysine), whereas the cake baked using fructose produced the highest concentration of CEL (25.1 +/- 0.15 mmol/mol lysine). There were no significant differences between CML concentrations formed in the cakes prepared using different types of cooking oil, but significant differences (P

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) against S-ibuprofen were synthesised using a tailor made functional monomer, 2-acrylamido-4-methylpyridine, following extensive pre-polymerisation studies of template-monomer complexation. An apparent association constant of 340 +/- 22 M-1 was calculated that was subsequently corrected to account for dimerisation of ibuprofen (K-dim = 320 +/- 95 M-1) resulting in an intrinsic association constant of 715 +/- 16 M-1, consistent with previously reported values. Using the synthesised imprinted polymer as a stationary phase, complete resolution of a racemic mixture of ibuprofen was achieved in predominantly aqueous mobile phases. An imprinting factor of 10 was observed, and was found to be in agreement with the difference in the average number of binding sites between MIP and blank polymers, calculated by staircase frontal chromatography. The imprinted polymers exhibited enhanced selectivity for the templated drug over structurally related NSAIDs. When applied as sorbents in solid-phase extraction of ibuprofen from commercial tablets, urine and blood serum samples, recoveries up to 92.2% were achieved. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012

T1 tegumental antigen was isolated from a homogenate of eight- to 10-week-old Fasciola hepatica using a T1-specific monoclonal antibody bound to sepharose in an antibody-affinity column. Rats and mice were vaccinated with T1 antigen in Freund's complete adjuvant, and control groups received equivalent amounts of non-T1 antigen (eluted from the antibody-affinity column) or ovalbumin. On completion of the immunisation programme, serum samples were collected for ELISA and IFA testing. The animals were challenged by oral infection with F hepatica metacercariae or, for several vaccinated rats, by intraperitoneal transplantation of live adult flukes. At autopsy, worm-burden and liver damage was assessed for each animal and the condition of transplanted flukes was examined. Comparison of test and control groups of animals showed that neither T1 nor non-T1 antigens provided significant protection against challenge, although specific antibody responses against the appropriate sensitising antigen were engendered. Flukes transplanted to the peritoneal cavity of immunised rats survived without damage, although they became encased in hollow fibrous capsules of host origin. The results lend support to the pre-existing concept that glycocalyx turnover by discharge of T1 secretory bodies at the apical surface of migrating flukes provides an efficient means of protection for the parasite against host immunity.

Aims: Pre-pregnancy care reduces the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with diabetes, yet the majority of women receive suboptimal care due to poor preconception counselling rates and a lack of awareness about the importance of specialised pre-pregnancy care. The primary aim was to develop a continuing professional development (CPD) resource for healthcare professionals (HCPs) who work with women with diabetes to facilitate preconception counselling with this group.

Methods: The website was developed under the direction of a multidisciplinary team, adhering to NICE guidelines. The tone, key messages and format are informed by the “Women with Diabetes” preconception counselling website, www.womenwithdiabetes.net, an existing resource which is effective in helping women to be better prepared for pregnancy. Results: This e-learning resource will give HCPs the necessary knowledge and tools to prepare women with diabetes to plan for pregnancy. The website features women with diabetes sharing their views and experiences, alongside an evidence-based commentary and key messages from research papers and clinical guidelines. It comprises two modules: “Planning for Pregnancy”, focusing on contraception, risks and planning; and “Diabetes and Pregnancy”, focusing on support during pregnancy with an overview of each trimester of pregnancy.

Conclusion: This website will be a useful CPD resource for all HCPs working with women with diabetes, providing a certificate on completion. This resource will empower HCPs to engage in preconception counselling with women with diabetes by providing the HCP with a greater understanding of the specific needs of women with diabetes both preconception and during pregnancy.
