The polymer-supported bimetallic catalyst FVP-PdCl2-2CuCl(2) (PVP, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), obtained in situ by the addition of CuCl2 to an alcoholic solution of PVP-PdCl2, exhibits high selectivity and activity for the oxidative carbonylation of aniline with carbon monoxide and oxygen to ethyl N-phenylcarbamate in the presence of a base (NaOAc) under atmospheric pressure. The strong synergic effect of Pd-Cu gives rise to a clear increase in the selectivity and activity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The polymer-supported bimetallic catalyst PVP-PdCl2-MnCl2 (PVP=poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)) exhibits high activity and selectivity for the oxidative carbonylation of amines with carbon monoxide and oxygen to carbamate esters under atmospheric pressure in the presence of a base (NaOAc). This catalyst is prepared by the addition of MnCl2 to the alcoholic solution of PVP-PdCl2 in situ. A remarkable bimetallic synergic effect and the role of PVP in PVP-PdCl2-MXn (MXn=the second transition metal component such as NiCl2, CoCl2, MnCl2 and FeCl3) gives rise to an obvious increase in the conversion and selectivity for the reaction. Among the second metal components tested, Mn-Pd exerts the strongest synergic effect. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Titania is a versatile metal oxide with multiple applications. Titania supported catalysts are reported to be much more active compared to conventional silica or alumina supported ones in some reactions. TiO2 (anatase) having high surface area, with better crystallinity and high onset temperature of rutilation can be prepared by thermal hydrolysis of titanyl sulfate solution under controlled conditions. Calcinations at 350oC for 6 hrs were necessary to crystallize anatase. Method of preparation and percentage of the loaded metal oxides have greater influence on surface area. Drastic decrease in surface area was observed upon rutilation. Rutilation started at different temperatures depending on the metal oxide and the method of preparation. TiO2 should be characterized with high surface area, phase purity and high onset temperature of rutilation.Which should be well above the optimum temperature of a designated reaction in which it is employed as a catalyst. Variation in physical properties, depending upon the method of preparation is greater in TiO2 supported catalysts. Methanation activity was found to be highly dependent on nickel concentration present on the surface of the pellets. The methanation activity is strongly influenced by support material. The rate and turn over frequency of methanation and toluene oxidation activity of these catalysts are also equally important from an industrial point of view.

This paper describes the first use of polystyrene-supported poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers as heterogeneous basic organocatalysts for carbon–carbon bond formation. Polystyrene-supported PAMAM dendrimers of first, second and third generations have been used as reusable base catalysts in Knoevenagel condensations of carbonyl compounds with active methylene compounds. The reactions proceed in short periods of time and with 100% selectivity. This novel catalyst eliminates the use of aromatic and halogenated solvents, as well as complex purification processes. The catalysts can be recycled ten times.

Ruthenium(III) complexes of the Schiff bases formed by the condensation of polymer bound aldehyde and the amines, such as 1,2-phenylenediamine (PS-opd), 2-aminophenol (PS-ap), and 2-aminobenzimidazole (PS-ab) have been prepared. The magnetic moment, EPR and electronic spectra suggest an octahedral structure for the complexes. The complexes of PS-opd, PS-ap, and PS-ab have been assigned the formula [PS-opdRuCl3(H2O)], [PS-apRuCl2(H2O)2], [PS-ab- RuCl3(H2O)2], respectively. These complexes catalyze oxidation of catechol using H2O2 selectively to o-benzoquinone. The catalytic activity of the complexes is in the order [PS-ab- RuCl3(H2O)2] . [PS-opdRuCl3(H2O)] [PS-apRuCl2(H2O)2]. Mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of catechol by ruthenium( III) complex is suggested to take place through the formation of a ruthenium(II) complex and its subsequent oxidation by H2O2 to the ruthenium(III) complex.

The thermal diffusivities of some polystyrene supported Schiff complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II) were determined by the laser induced photoacoustic technique. The effect of metal as well as the halogen part on thermal diffusivity of polymer supported complexes was studied. The thermal diffusivity of Co complexes increases while it decreases in Cu complexes with Cl, Br and I substitutions, respectively.

Inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy has been used to observe and characterise hydrogen on the carbon component of a Pt/C catalyst. INS provides the complete vibration spectrum of coronene, regarded as a molecular model of a graphite layer. The vibrational modes are assigned with the aid of ab initio density functional theory calculations and the INS spectra by the a-CLIMAX program. A spectrum for which the H modes of coronene have been computationally suppressed, a carbon-only coronene spectrum, is a better representation of the spectrum of a graphite layer than is coronene itself. Dihydrogen dosing of a Pt/C catalyst caused amplification of the surface modes of carbon, an effect described as H riding on carbon. From the enhancement of the low energy carbon modes (100-600 cm(-1)) it is concluded that spillover hydrogen becomes attached to dangling bonds at the edges of graphitic regions of the carbon support. In first part we have developed a simple regiocontrolled protocol of 1,3-DC to get ring fused pyrazole derivatives. These pyrazole derivatives were synthesized using 1,3-DC between nitrile imine and various dipolarophiles such as alkynes, cyclic α,β-ketones, lactones, thiocatones and lactums. The reactions were found to be highly regiospecific. In second part we have discussed about helicene, its properties, synthesis and applications as asymmetric catalyst.Due to inherent chirality, herein we have made an attempt to synthesize the helicene-thiourea based catalyst for asymmetric catalysis. The synthesis involved formation of two key intermediates viz, bromo-phenanthrene 5 and a vinyl-naphthalene 10. The coupling of these two intermediates leads to formation of hexahelicene.

Low metal content Co and Ni alumina supported catalysts (4.0, 2.5 and 1.0 wt% nominal metal content) have been prepared, characterized (by ICP-OES, TEM, TPR-H2 and TPO) and tested for the CO2 reforming of methane. The objective is to optimize the metal loading in order to have a more efficient system. The selected reaction temperature is 973 K, although some tests at higher reaction temperature have been also performed. The results show that the amount of deposited carbon is noticeably lower than that obtained with the Co and Ni reference catalysts (9 wt%), but the CH4 and CO2 conversions are also lower. Among the catalysts tested, the Co(1) catalyst (the value in brackets corresponds to the nominal wt% loading) is deactivated during the first minutes of reaction because CoAl2O4 is formed, while Ni(1) and Co(2.5) catalysts show a high specific activity for methane conversion, a high stability and a very low carbon deposition.
