High-density polyethylene (HDPE) water-proof membranes are used as coatings in vinasse (leachate from sugar cane) storage tanks. The leachate is pumped into the tanks at temperatures of 80-90 °C. Due to these high temperatures and acidity of the waste, these membranes can be degraded, cracked and then loose the function for which they have been designed. This may cause contamination of the soil and groundwater. This study evaluated the effect of vinasse in HDPE membranes after 4 months of exposure in a controlled environment. An aggressive, alkaline pH liquid (sodium hydroxide) was also used. The objective was to evaluate the membrane resistance in contact with acidic and alkaline residues. Physical and mechanical tests, measurement of the carbon black content and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to determine degradation of polymer membranes after chemical immersion. While sodium hydroxide resulted caused only minor changes in the physical properties, vinasse induced a thickness change of 7.8%. With immersion in vinasse, an average decrease in strength and deformability (yield) of 34% and 23.5% were measured, respectively. The stiffness increased by 7.8% (average) and the tear strength decreased by 2.7% (average).

Products derived from wood or engineered products are becoming interesting alternatives to the replacement of solid wood in various applications, from structural components to the furniture industry and packaging. Among these products, there are panels built by strands, particles and fibers, each one having their particular characteristics and potential of use. Since the different types of panels are produced, waste generation is part of the process, and that more technological it is, it still generates losses of raw materials. Based on the need for rational use of raw materials and using almost full of industrially processed wood, It arises the proposal of this work, which seeks to use waste from the lamination, like pieces of strands, broken strands, strands rough, cracked strands to produce panels with structural characteristics of the OSL panel (Oriented Strand Lumber), LSL (Laminated Strand Lumber) and OSB (Oriented Strand Lumber). Besides the use of waste, this paper seeks an alternative to the use of the adhesive, because the industry uses formaldehyde-based adhesives, which over the press, they emit large amounts of formaldehyde, which is very aggressive to humans and environment. The panels made with polyurethane resin based on castor oil and hot-pressed were characterized by physical and mechanical tests according to specifications of European Standard (EN). High values of tensile strength, elastic modulus and density were found in the results of tests. Adding to stable values of swelling and moisture content, the panel studied adds attractive features to the panel market, especially in the civil construction

The adhesives used in the production of engineered boards have been object of study over the years in order to improve the properties of the boards with less energy consumption, lower production costs and reduced environmental impact. In addition to that, process variables may affect the properties of the board. The present study aimed to characterize sheets of plywood, manufactured with two types of adhesives, under two different pressing conditions. The adhesives used for the study were Phenol-formaldehyde and Polyurethane castor oil based. The pressure of pressing was varied in a range from 75 to 160 Bar, in order to verify how they influence the physical and mechanical properties of the board. The tests performed resulted in a conclusion that shows that the moister content of the veneers interferes on the physical and mechanical tests. In general, boards produced with polyurethane resin showed superior physical and mechanical results; although the ones produced with phenol formaldehyde at a pressure of 75 Bar had always equal or higher values, compared to what is found in literature

Thermosetting resins are very important in the production of MDF panels. They act as an adhesive in the process of compacting and consolidating the fiberboard. Thermoset resins commonly used in this process are based resin urea formaldehyde (UF) and melamine formaldehyde (MF). The first has a higher demand due to its low cost and good performance in meeting the specifications and standards. The second has a high cost compared to MF resin, but adds greater value to the MDF panel, because it gives greater moisture resistance. The process of manufacture of MDF boards was briefly presented in this study to facilitate the understanding of the work. Samples of thermosetting resins (UF and MF) were subjected to physical-chemical seeking to relate these results to the technological performance presented by their respective samples of MDF boards. Two other samples of MDF panels were subjected to physical and mechanical tests. Results were analyzed and related to the award of their respective thermoset resin. Instruments like Dahmos Trend Manager ® and Grecon Dax 5000 and TG - DSC analysis were used in this study to assist in the analysis of the results. It was observed that the results of the analysis of thermosetting resins were within the specified. Such resins do not directly influence the technological tests provided by the MDF panels, but it has been found that the process variables such as humidity and fiber production rate interfere with the performance of the resin accelerating the reaction and therefore their influence on the physical-mechanical properties of the panels MDF. Samples of MDF panels with UF and MF met all the specifications required by the Brazilian standard with regard to the technological quality. The increased demand for UF resin market is justified by the service specifications...

This work evaluated the effect of vinasse (residue from sugar cane) in high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes having in mind that it is deposited at temperatures of 80-90˚C on the geomembrane in storage tanks. The objective was to evaluate the resistance of the geomembrane in contact with residue in a total period of 4 months. Physical and mechanical tests, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to determine degradation of polymer membranes after chemical immersion. In general, the results obtained show that the vinasse affected the geomembranes significantly in some aspects, for instance, the thickness of the material presented a variation of 7.8%. The average values in both directions at yielding showed a significant loss of tensile strength (34.13%) and strain (23.48%) and an increase in the modulus of elasticity (9.63%). At the rupture the behavior presented the same trend: a loss of 32% for tensile strength and 24.4% for the deformation were observed. Tear strength presented small decrease (4.72%) and puncture resistance a increase of 7.9% after immersion of geomembranes. The TGA tests were not efficient to detect evidence of degradation in samples of geomembranes after exposures, but identified problems in the quality of the supplied material.

The main goal of this dissertation is the mechanical characterization as a function of temperature of nine tungsten alloys containing different amounts of titanium, vanadium and yttrium and lanthanum oxide. The alloys under study were the following ones: W-0.5%Y2O3, W-2%Ti, W-2% Ti-0.5% Y2O3, W-4% Ti-0.5% Y2O3, W-2%V, W- 2%Vmix, W-4%V, W-1%La2O3 and W-4%V-1%La2O3. All of them, besides pure tungsten, were manufactured using a Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) process and they were supplied by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The research was carried out through a systematic study based on physical and mechanical tests as well as the post mortem analysis of tested samples. Diverse mechanical tests were applied to perform this characterization; most of them were conducted at temperatures in the range 25-1000 ºC. The following characterization tests were performed: • Density • Vickers hardness • Elastic modulus • Yield strength or ultimate bending strength, and their evolution with temperature • Fracture toughness and its temperature behavior • Microstructural analysis • Fractographical analysis • Microstructure-macroscopic relationship analysis This study begins with an introduction regarding the systems where these materials could be applied, in order to establish and understand their service conditions. In this case, the component that defines the conditions is the Divertor of magnetic-confinement fusion reactors. It seems obvious that their use as fusion reactor components, more exactly as plasma facing components (PFCs), makes these alloys work under conditions of neutron irradiation. In addition to this, the fact that they are novel materials demands a preliminary study of the basic characteristics which will guarantee their minimum requirements prior to a more complex study. This constitutes the motivation of the present research. The current energy crisis has driven to join forces so as to develop new materials, techniques and devices for their application in the nuclear energy industry. The development of production techniques for tungsten-based alloys, with a very high melting point, requires the use of precursors for sintering to achieve higher densifications and, accordingly, better mechanical properties. This is the purpose of the addition of titanium and vanadium to these alloys. Nevertheless, one of the main problems of using tungsten as structural material is its high ductile-brittle transition temperature. This temperature is characteristic of metallic materials with body centered cubic structure and depends on several metallurgical factors. The recrystallization process increases their transition temperature. Since PFCs have a very high service temperature, this facilitates the metal recrystallization. In order to inhibit this process, insoluble particles are dispersed in the material allowing higher service temperatures. So far, oxides of thorium, lanthanum and yttrium have been used as dispersed particles. Tungsten binary alloys are studied in comparison with pure tungsten to understand how the contents of some elements and oxide particles affect tungsten properties. In turn, these binary alloys are used as reference materials to understand the behavior of ternary alloys. Given the close relationship between the material properties, structure and manufacturing process, this research is completed with a fractographical and micrographic analysis. The fractographical analysis is aimed to show the mechanisms that are involved in the process of the material fracture. Besides, the micrographic study will help to understand this behavior through the identification of present phases. The grain size measurement is a crucial part of the microstructural characterization. In this work, the measurement of grain size was carried out by chemical selective etching to reveal the boundary grain on prepared samples. Afterwards, micrographs were subjected to both treatment and image analysis. The dissertation ends with a discussion of results and the compilation of the most important conclusions reached through this work. The development of new materials for plasma facing components application is still under study. The analysis of these materials will help to complete a database of the features that will allow a more reliable materials selection.

This research is about the use of the coconut´s endocarp (nucifera linn) and the waste of derivatives of wood and furniture as raw material to technological use. In that sense, the lignocellulosic waste is used for manufacture of homogeneous wood sheet agglomerate (LHWS) and lignocellulosic load which take part of a polymeric composite with fiber glass E (GFRP-WC). In the manufacturing of the homogeneous wood sheet agglomerate (LHWS), it was used mamona´s resin as waste s agglutinating element. The plates were taken up in a hydraulic press engine, heated, with temperature control, where they were manufactured for different percentage of waste wood and coconuts nucífera linn. Physical tests were conducted to determine the absorption of water, density, damp grade (in two hours and twenty-four hours), swelling thickness (in two hours and twenty-four hours), and mechanical tests to evaluate the parallel tensile strength (internal stick) and bending and the static (steady) flexural. The physical test´s results indicate that the LHWS can be classified as bonded wood plate of high-density and with highly water resistant. In the mechanical tests it was possible to establish that LHWS presents different characteristics when submitted to uniaxial tensile and to the static (steady) flexural, since brittle and elasticity module had a variation according to the amount of dry endocarp used to manufacture each trace of LHWS. The GFRP-WC was industrially manufactured by a hand-lay-up process where the fiber glass E was used as reinforcement the lignocellulósic´s waste as load. The matrix was made with ortofitalic unsaturated polyester resin. Physical and mechanical tests were performed in presence of saturated humidity and dry. The results indicated good performance of the GFRP-WC, as traction as in flexion in three points. The presence of water influenced the modules obtained in the flexural and tensile but there were no significant alteration in the properties analyzed. As for the fracture, the analysis showed that the effects are more harmful in the presence of damp, under the action of loading tested, but despite this, the fracture was well defined starting in the external parts and spreading to the internal regions when one when it reaches the hybrid load

In the State Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, the most significant deposits of minerals in the production of granite and pegmatite are Seridó region. Municipalities of Parelhas and Equador are the main responsible for the production of feldspar, quartz, kaolin and granite. The ceramic industries are always in search of competitiveness by investing in new products or improving existing techniques. The stoneware is a type of pottery that stands in the market because it presents technical and aesthetic characteristics superior to other existing products. Characteristics of the raw materials initially obtained with chemical analysis and mineralogical analysis are crucial in getting a product that satisfies the conditions in a manufacturing process and is, in principle, directly related to the firing cycle. This research aimed at developing new formulations for the mass production of ceramic stoneware. The raw materials initially characterized were feldspar, quartz, kaolin and granite. As part of the research was developed at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal, we used two clays used in the production of Portuguese ceramics. The raw material Brazilian and Portuguese and the final product, both in Portugal and Brazil, were analyzed for X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, granulometric analysis, dilatometric analysis, thermal analysis and analysis of scanning electron microscopy (MEV). The specimens prepared at the University of Aveiro (DECV) were sintered at 10000C and 12000C and the specimens prepared in UFRN were sintered at 10000C, 10500C, 11000C, 11500C, 12000C, 12500C and 13000C, but the best results and demonstrating the presence of the mineral mullite were at temperatures of 12000C, 12500C and 13000C. The results showed that the granite waste used may be considered raw material of excellent quality for use in the ceramic industry and coating floors and more accurately by the industry of stoneware. Physical and mechanical tests conducted on samples of the formulations F01 and F02 developed in UFRN showed a water absorption and mechanical strength suitable for the stoneware

The sharp consumption of natural resources by the construction industry has motivated numerous studies concerning the application of waste to replace partially or fully, some materials, such as aggregates, thereby reducing the environmental impact caused by the extraction of sand and crushing process. The application of stone dust from crushing process arising as an aggregate for the production of Portland cement concrete is a viable alternative in view of the high cost of natural sands, in addition to the environmental damage which causes its operation to the environment. The stone dust has reduced cost compared to natural sand because it is produced in the beds of their own quarries, which are usually located close to major urban centers. This study examined the feasibility of using stone dust from the crushing of rock gneisses in the state of Bahia, replacing natural quartz sand. In the development of scientific study was conducted to characterize physical and chemical raw materials applied and molded cylindrical specimens , using as reference values Fck 20, Fck 25 and Fck 30 MPa ( resistance characteristic of the concrete after 28 days) in following compositions stone powder: 10%, 30%, 50 %, 100% and 100% with additive. The specimens were cured and subjected to the tests of compressive strength and water absorption, then the samples were subjected to the tests of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results obtained showed that the composition with 10% stone powder showed the best results regarding the physical and mechanical tests performed, confirming the reduction in compressive strength and increased water uptake increased as the content of the powder stone in the concrete composition
