The photoreduction current response on a polyaniline modified electrode is interpreted as photo-assisted reduction of oxygen dissolved in the electrolyte solution but not due to the excited species PAn* and PAn* dagger. The effect of light is just the same as that of the electrode rotating or of stirring of the electrolyte which accelerates the oxygen dissolved in the electrolyte solution to react with leucoemeraldine (reduced polyaniline). The potentiostat is set to reduce the oxidized polyaniline at constant potential, thus producing a reduction current.

The chloroplast gene rbcL encodes the large subunit of the CO2-fixing enzyme ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase. In previous work a target for photo-accelerated degradation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii rbcL transcripts in vivo was found to lie within the first 63 nucleotides, and a sequence element required for increasing the longevity of transcripts of rbcL-reporter genes was found to occur between nucleotides 170 and 350. Photo-accelerated degradation of rbcL transcripts has been found to require nucleotides 21 to 41. Transcript nucleotides lying between 329 and 334 and between 14 and 27 are essential for stabilizing transcripts in vivo; mutations in either region reduce the longevity of transcripts. It is postulated that the effectiveness of photo-accelerated endonuclease attacks on the nucleotide 21 to 41 region is reduced by physical blockage or distortion of the target sequence by interacting proteins that associate with nucleotides in the 14 to 27 and 329 to 334 regions of the transcripts. Both the nucleotide +329 to +334 stabilizing sequence of rbcL and a transcription enhancing sequence that lies between +126 and +170 encode well conserved (cyanobacteria through angiosperms) amino acid sequences; the evolution of expression control elements within the protein coding sequence of rbcL is considered.

The effects of ester plasticizers and copolymers on the mechanical properties of the natural biodegradable polymers, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [PHB] and poly(lactic acid) [PLA] have been studied after subjecting to melt processing conditions. Ester plasticizers were synthesized from citric, tartaric and maleic acids using various alcohols. A variety of PLA copolymers have also been prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives using stannous octanoate catalysed ring opening polymerisations of DL-lactide. A novel PLA star copolymer was also prepared from an ethoxylated pentaerythritol. The structures of these copolymers were determined by NMR spectroscopy. The plasticizing effect of the synthesised additives at various concentrations was determined. While certain additives were capable of improving the mechanical properties of PLA, none were effective in PHB. Moreover, it was found that certain combinations of additives exhibited synergistic effects. Possible mechanisms are discussed. Biotic and abiotic degradation studies showed that the plasticizers (esters and copolymers) did not inhibit the biodegradability of PHB or PLA in compost at 60°C. Simple toxicity tests carried out on compost extract and its ability to support the growth of cress seeds was established. PLA was found to be susceptible to limited thermal degradation under melt processing conditions. Conventional phenolic antioxidants showed no significant effect on this process, suggesting that degradation was not predominantly a free radical process. PLA also underwent photo-oxidative degradation with UV light and the process could be accelerated in the presence of a photoactivator such as iron (III) diisononyl dithiocarbamate. The mechanisms for the above processes are discussed. Finally, selected compounds were prepared on a pilot plant scale. Extruded and blown films were prepared containing these additives with conventional polymer processing equipment. The mechanical properties were similar to those obtained with laboratory produced compression moulded films.

Gas phase photoreforming of methanol using a Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst has been performed under flow conditions at elevated temperatures. Comparing the activity of the reforming process as a function of temperature under dark and irradiated conditions shows a significant enhancement in the rate of H2 production using the photo-assisted conditions at temperatures between 100-140 °C. At higher temperatures, the effect of irradiation is small with the process dominated by the thermal process. Deactivation of the catalyst was observed under irradiation but the catalyst was easily regenerated using an oxygen treatment at 120 °C. Diffuse Reflectance Infra-red Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) showed that the activity of the catalyst could be correlated with the presence of the photogenerated trapped electrons. In addition, lower amounts of CO adsorbed on Pt, compared to those observed in the dark reaction, were found for the UV-irradiated systems. It is proposed that CO and adsorbed intermediates, such as formate, can act as inhibitors in the photoreforming process and this is further supported by the observation that, before and after the regeneration process in O2, the CO and surface adsorbed organic intermediate products are removed and the activity is recovered.

A controlled synthesis of CuO nanostructures with various morphologies were successfully achieved by presence/absence of low frequency (42 kHz) ultrasound with two different methods. The size, shape and morphology of the CuO nanostructures were tailored by altering the ultrasound, mode of addition and solvent medium. The crystalline structure and molecular vibrational modes of the prepared nanostructures were analysed through X-ray diffraction and FTIR measurement, respectively which confirmed that the nanostructures were phase pure high-quality CuO with monoclinic crystal structure. The morphological evaluation and elemental composition analysis were done using TEM and EDS attached with SEM, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the prepared CuO nanostructures could be served as an effective photocatalyst towards the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation. Among the various nanostructures, the spherical shape CuO nanostructures were found to have the better catalytic activities towards MO dye degradation. The catalytic degradation performance of MO in the presence of CuO nanostructures showed the following order: spherical\nanorod \layered oval \nanoleaf \triangular \shuttles structures. The influence of loading and reusability of catalyst revealed that the efficiency of visible light assisted degradation of MO was effectively enhanced and more than 95 % of degradation was achieved after 3 cycles

To date, biodegradable networks and particularly their kinetic chain lengths have been characterized by analysis of their degradation products in solution. We characterize the network itself by NMR analysis in the solvent-swollen state under magic angle spinning conditions. The networks were prepared by photoinitiated cross-linking of poly(dl-lactide)−dimethacrylate macromers (5 kg/mol) in the presence of an unreactive diluent. Using diffusion filtering and 2D correlation spectroscopy techniques, all network components are identified. By quantification of network-bound photoinitiator fragments, an average kinetic chain length of 9 ± 2 methacrylate units is determined. The PDLLA macromer solution was also used with a dye to prepare computer-designed structures by stereolithography. For these networks structures, the average kinetic chain length is 24 ± 4 methacrylate units. In all cases the calculated molecular weights of the polymethacrylate chains after degradation are maximally 8.8 kg/mol, which is far below the threshold for renal clearance. Upon incubation in phosphate buffered saline at 37 °C, the networks show a similar mass loss profile in time as linear high-molecular-weight PDLLA (HMW PDLLA). The mechanical properties are preserved longer for the PDLLA networks than for HMW PDLLA. The initial tensile strength of 47 ± 2 MPa does not decrease significantly for the first 15 weeks, while HMW PDLLA lost 85 ± 5% of its strength within 5 weeks. The physical properties, kinetic chain length, and degradation profile of these photo-cross-linked PDLLA networks make them most suited materials for orthopedic applications and use in (bone) tissue engineering.

Metal stencils are well known in electronics printing application such as for dispensing solder paste for surface mounting, printing embedded passive elements in multilayer structures, etc. For microprinting applications using stencils, the print quality depends on the smoothness of the stencil aperture and its dimensional accuracy, which in turn are invariably related to the method used to manufacture the stencils. In this paper, fabrication of metal stencils using a photo-defined electrically assisted etching method is described. Apertures in the stencil were made in neutral electrolyte using three different types of impressed current, namely, dc, pulsed dc, and periodic pulse reverse (PPR). Dimensional accuracy and wall smoothness of the etched apertures in each of the current waveforms were compared. Finally, paste transfer efficiency of the stencil obtained using PPR was calculated and compared with those of a laser-cut electropolished stencil. It is observed that the stencil fabricated using current in PPR waveform has better dimensional accuracy and aperture wall smoothness than those obtained with dc and pulsed dc. From the paste transfer efficiency experiment, it is concluded that photo-defined electrically assisted etching method can provide an alternate route for fabrication of metal stencils for future microelectronics printing applications.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (SA), and acrylamide (AM) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent. The equilibrium swelling capacities and the rates of swelling of SAPs varied with the AM content and followed first-order kinetics. The photodegradation of SAPs in their equilibrium swollen state was carried out by monitoring their swelling capacity and the residual weight fraction. The SAPs degraded in two stages, wherein the swelling capacity increased to a maximum and then subsequently decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis of the SAPs indicated that the copolymeric superabsorbents had intermediate thermal stability between the homopolymeric superabsorbents. The activation energies of SAPs with 0, 20, and 100 mol % AM content were determined by Kissinger method and were found to be 299, 248, and 147 kJ mol-1, respectively. The ultrasonic degradation of the superabsorbents was carried out in their equilibrium swollen state, and the change in the viscosity with ultrasonication time was used to quantify the degradation. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA superabsorbent was also investigated at various ultrasound intensities. The degradation rate coefficients were found to increase with the intensity of ultrasound. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA/AM (20% AM) was also carried out, and degradation rate was found to be more than that of the AA/SA superabsorbent. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A cationic superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was synthesized by carrying out the polymerization of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride) with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linking agent. The SAP was subjected to degradation in dry and the equilibrium swollen state by thermo gravimetric analysis and exposure to ultraviolet radiation, respectively. The photodegradation was monitored by measuring changes in the swelling capacity and the dry weight of the SAP. The thermal degradation of the SAP occurred in three stages after the initial removal of moisture and the activation energies of the decomposition were determined.

The influence of pH on the degradation of the herbicide tebuthiuron (TBH) was investigated using in situ generated Fe(III)-citrate complexes (Fe:cit) submitted to the photo-Fenton process under solar irradiation. Using Fe:cit in a wide pH range (2.5-7.5), 100-78% TBH oxidation was achieved respectively from a UV dose of 2.0 J cm(-2) (15 min). Moreover, the oxidation of TBH obtained in the presence of Fe:cit at pH 6.0 was higher than that obtained using Fe(NO3)3 at pH 2.5. A similar behavior is observed for the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) in TBH solutions. In the presence of Fe:cit, 20% and 85% of TOC was removed at pH 7.5 and 2.5, respectively, after 7.5 J cm-2 irradiation, while no mineralization was observed employing Fe(NO3)(3) for the same UV dose. Using Fe(NO3)(3), mineralization was observed only after 11 J cm-2 (8%). A higher mineralization rate was obtained with Fe(NO3)(3) only when a concentration three times higher was employed at pH 2.5. Besides the high efficiency of TBH degradation observed using the ferric citrate complex in the solar photo-Fenton process, it also offers the advantage of application at a pH of up to 7.5. The degradation of the antibiotic tetracycline (TC) by the photo-Fenton process was evaluated under black-light and solar irradiation. The influences of iron source (Fe(NO3)(3) or ferrioxalate), hydrogen peroxide and matrix (pure water, surface water and a sewage treatment plant effluent-STP) were evaluated. Under black-light irradiation, TC degradation was favored in the presence of Fe(NO3)(3), achieving total degradation after 1 min irradiation, while under solar light the use of ferrioxalate favors the degradation. Nevertheless, no significant difference in total organic carbon removal was observed between these two iron sources, achieving a residual concentration of around 5 mg L-1 under black-light and 2 mg L-1 under solar light irradiation. No decrease of the degradation efficiency relative to pure water was observed when TC was irradiated in a sample of surface water, under either black-light or solar irradiation. However, lower efficiency was obtained under black-light when TC was present in a sample of STP effluent, indicating the interference of the constituents of this sample on the overall efficiency of the process. on the other hand, under solar irradiation in the presence of ferrioxalate, no influence of the matrix was observed, even in the sample of STP effluent, achieving total degradation of TC in 1.5 min.
