Novel triplexing-filter design using silica-based direction coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating
Resumo:
A new triplexing filter based on a silica direction coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating is presented. Using a combination of a direction coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating, a 1310-nm channel is multiplexed and 1490- and 1550-nm channels are demultiplexed for fiber-to-the-home. The direction coupler is used to coarsely separate the 1310-nm channel from the 1490- and 1550-nm channels. Subsequently, an arrayed waveguide grating is used to demultiplex the 1490- from 1550-nm channel. The simulated spectra show the 1-dB bandwidth of 110 nm for the 1310-nm channel and 20 and 20.5 nm for the 1490- and 1550-nm channels. The insertion loss is only 0.15 dB for 1310 nm and 5 dB for 1490 and 1550 nm. The crosstalk between the 1490- and 1550-nm channels was less than -35 dB. Directional coupler can be constructed by putting multiple photonic crystal waveguides together. The propagation of the optical field entering this system symmetrically was analysed numerically according to self-imaging principle. On the basis of this structure, ultracompact multiway beam splitter was designed and the ones with three and four output channels were discussed in details as examples. By simply tuning the effective refractive index of two dielectric rods in the coupler symmetrically to induce the redistribution of the power of the optical field, uniform or free splitting can be achieved. Compared with the reported results, this way is simpler, more feasible and more efficient and has extensive practical value in future photonic integrated circuits.

We have studied the optical matching layers (OMLs) and external quantum efficiency in the evanescent coupling photodiodes (ECPDs) integrating a diluted waveguide as a fibre-to-waveguide coupler, by using the semi-vectorial beam propagation method (BPM). The physical basis of OML has been identified, thereby a general designing rule of OML is developed in such a kind of photodiode. In addition, the external quantum efficiency and the polarization sensitivity versus the absorption and coupling length are analysed. With an optical matching layer, the absorption medium with a length of 30 mu m could absorb 90% of the incident light at 1.55 mu m wavelength, thus the total absorption increases more than 7 times over that of the photodiode without any optical matching layer.

A thermo-optic variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and multimode-interference coupler is fabricated. Not a single-mode but a multimode waveguide is used as the input and output structures of the optical field, which greatly reduces the coupling loss of the VOA with a normal single-mode fiber. The insertion loss of the fabricated VOA is 2.52 to 2.82 dB at the wavelength of 1520 to 1570 nm. The polarization dependent loss is 0.28 to 0.45 dB at the same wavelength range. Its maximum attenuation range is up to 26.3 dB when its power consumption is 369 mW. The response frequency of the fabricated VOA is about 10 kHz. By using a semiconductor saturable-absorber output coupler as a mode-locking device, we experimentally realized the operation of a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser. Stable laser pulses with duration of 2.3 ps were generated at the output power of about 1 W. With increasing the pump power to 9 W, the maximum mode-locked power of 1.7 W was obtained, which corresponds to a slope conversion efficiency of 44% and optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 19%.

Two types of silicon-on-insulator thermo-optic variable optical attenuators (VOAs) based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a multimode-interference coupler are fabricated, one with thermal isolating grooves to improve heating efficiency and the other without Comparison of optical and electrical properties, such as insertion losses, the maximum attenuation levels and the corresponding power consumptions, and the response times, is carried out between the two types of VOAs. The comparison results Indicate that use of thermal isolating grooves leads to better values for most characteristics and is an effective way to improve the performance of Mach-Zehnder interferometer-type thermo-optic devices. A novel silicon-on-insulator thermo-optic variable optical attenuator with isolated grooves based on a multimode interference coupler principle is fabricated by the inductive coupled plasma etching technology. The maximum fibre-to-fibre insertion loss is lower than 2.2 dB, the dynamic attenuation range is from 0 to 30 dB in the wavelength range 1500-1600 nm, and the maximum power consumption is only 140 mW. The response frequency of the fabricated variable optical attenuator is about 30 kHz. Compared to the variable optical attenuator without isolated grooves, the maximum power consumption decreases more than 220 mW, and the response frequency rises are more than 20 kHz.

SOI (silicon-on-insulator) is a new material with a lot of important performances such as large index difference, low transmission loss. Fabrication processes for SOI based optoelectronic devices are compatible with conventional IC processes. Having the potential of OEIC monolithic integration, SOI based optoelectronic devices have shown many good characteristics and become more and more attractive recently. In this paper, the recent progresses of SOI waveguide devices in our research group are presented. By highly effective numerical simulation, the single mode conditions for SOI rib waveguides with rectangular and trapezoidal cross-section were accurately investigated. Using both chemical anisotropic wet etching and plasma dry etching techniques, SOI single mode rib waveguide, MMI coupler, VOA (variable optical attenuator), 2X2 thermal-optical switch were successfully designed and fabricated. Based on these, 4X4 and 8X8 SOI optical waveguide integrated switch matrixes are demonstrated for the first time.

Size tolerance of a 4X4 general interference tapered multimode interference (MMI) coupler in a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure is investigated by means of a 2-D finite difference beam propagation method (2D-FDBPM), together with an effective refractive index method (EIM). The results show that the tapered multimode interference coupler exhibits relatively larger size tolerance when light is launched from the edgeport than from midport, though it has much better output power uniformity when light is launched from midport. Besides that, it can reduce the device length greatly. The 4X4 general interference tapered MMI coupler has a slightly larger size tolerance compared with a conventional straight multimode interference coupler. Films of high glass' transition temperature polymer polyetherketone doped with chromophore 2,2'[4-[(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)azophenyl]-amino]-bisethanol NTAB) were prepared, poled by the corona-onset poling setup which includes a grid voltage making the surface-charge distribution uniform at elevated temperature. The thickness of the films was measured by the Model 2010 Prism Coupler system. Second harmonic generation d(33) was measured by the second harmonic generation method, and the d33 is 38.12 pm/V at 1064 nm under the absorption correction. The nonlinear optical activity maintains is 80% of its initial value. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We have fabricated a compact 3-dB multimode interference coupler with a large silicon-on-insulator cross section. To reduce the length of the usual symmetric interference multimode interference coupler, we propose using a parabolically tapered structure. The length of the device is 398 mum. The device has a uniformity of 0.28 dB. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America.

MMI coupler with large cross section has low coupling loss between the device and fiber. However, large chip area is required. Recently proposed N x N tapered MMI coupler shows a substantial reduction in device geometry. No such kind of devices with N > 2 has yet been realized up to now. The authors have demonstrated a 4 x 4 parabolically tapered MMI coupler with large cross section that can match the SM fiber in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. The device exhibits a minimum uniformity of 0.36 dB and excess loss of 3.7 dB, It represents a key component for realization of MMI-based silicon integrated optical circuit technology.

The device exhibits a uniformity of < 0.8dB and can be used in the realisation of an MMI-based optical switch with a high extinction ratio.
