Phase changing flows are being considered for thermal management in space platforms. The resulting flow patterns are very complicated and extremely sensitive to gravity action. Concerning fluid flow in ducts, the available evidence indicates that although the pressure loss does not depend too much on the fluid flow pattern, the heat transfer (and resulting phase change) does. A simple exercise to illustrate this point is presented in this paper. It deals with condensing flow in straight circular cross-sectional ducts. Two extreme configurations are considered here, one corresponds to a stratified flow and the other to an annular flow. Both types of flow patterns have been extensively considered in the past and from this point of view almost nothing is new in the paper, but past results look conflictive and this could be due to the limitations and computational intricacies of the models used. Thus the problem has been reformulated from the onset and the results are presented as the evolution of the vapor quality (vapor to total mass flow rate) along the duct, in typical cases. The results presented here indicate that within the validity of the present models and the assumed ranges of mass flow rate, duct diameter, thermal conditions and fluid characteristics, the length of the ducts required to achieve complete condensation under zero gravity are an order of magnitude larger than in horizontal tubes under normal terrestrial conditions.

Conservation laws for an inviscid liquid bridge set into motion by conservative forces are given in integral form. These laws provide useful information on the overall motion of the bridge in the presence of unexpected or uncontrolled disturbances and could, in addition, be monitored in a computational solution of the problem as an accuracy check. Many of the resulting conservation laws are familiar to fluiddynamicists. Nevertheless, a systematic approach providing an exhaustive list of these laws reveals the existence of new conserved properties hardly deducible in the classical way. Although the present analysis concerns the case of axial, and constant, gravity it can be applied, with minor refinements, when the gravity field varies with time in both direction and intensity.

Problems related to several fluid physics experiments the case of two experiemnts to be performed under reduced gravity, onboard Space- temperatures, lab (1st Mission), are discussed. Special attention is placed on parallel and preparatory work on erth, wich could throw some light on the opportunity, present interest and limitations of these experiments. The need for strong supporting fundamental research and, in particular, a more precise determination of the paremeters involved, is stressed.

Strictly speaking, space related activities at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Aeronáuticos (ETSIA) begun in 1973, when Prof. Ignacio Da Riva got a contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) to compile a handbook on spacecraft thermal control. By the same time, ESA issued an announcement of opportunities offering to the European scientific community the possibility of perform microgravity relevant experiments on board space platform like the European orbital laboratory Spacelab. Prof. Da Riva proposed one of the few selected experiments dealing with fluid physics under microgravity conditions, later flown on Spacelab-1 mission in 1983. These two events were the starting point where Prof. Da Riva, full professor of Aerodynamics at ETSIA, nucleated a small group of young professors and students located at the Laboratorio de Aerodinámica y Mecánica de Fluidos (LAMF) of ETSIA. Such group was leaded by Prof. Da Riva since its creation till 1991, when Prof. Da Riva died, and it was the seed of the more recently created research institute for aerospace science and technology named "Ignacio Da Riva" (IDR) in his honour. In this communication space related activities performed either at LAMF or IDR during the last three decades are briefly described.

On 22nd February '96, the space mission STS 75 started ,from the NASA facilities at Cape Canaveral. Such a mission consists in the launch of the shuttle Columbia in order to carry out two experiments in the space: the TSS 1R (Tethered Satellite Sistem 1 Refliight) and the USMP (United States Microgravity Payload). The TSS 1R is a replica of a similar mission TSS 1 '92. The TSS space programme is a bilateral scientific cooperation between the USA space agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Agency) and the ASI (Italian Space Agency. The TSS 1R system consists on the shuttle Columbia which deploys, up-ward, by means a conducting tether 20 km long, a spherical satellite (1.5 mt diameter) containing scientific instrumentation. This system, orbiting at about 300 km from the Earth's surface, represents, presently, the largest experimental space structure, Due to its dimensions, flexibility and conducting properties of the tether, the system interacts, in a quite complex manner, wih the earth magnetic field and the ionospheric plasma, in a way that the total system behaves as an electromagnetic radiating antenna as well as an electric power generator. Twelve scientific experiments have been assessed by US and Italian scientists in order to study the electro dynamic behaviour of the structure orbiting in the ionos phere. Two experiments have been prepared in the attempt to receive on the Earth's surface possible electromagnetic events radiated by the TSS 1R. The project EMET (Electro Magnetic Emissions from Tether),USA and the project OESEE (Observations on the Earth Surface of Electromagnetic Emissions) Italy, consist in a coordinated programme of passive detection of such possible EM emissions. This detection will supply the verification of some thoretical hypotheses on the electrodynamic interactions between the orbiting system, the Earth's magnetic field and the ionospheric plasma with two principal aims as the technological assesment of the system concept as well as a deeper knowledge of the ionosphere properties for future space applications. A theoretical model that keeps the peculiarities of tether emissionsis being developed for signal prediction at constant tether current. As a step previous to the calculation of the expected ground signal , the Alfven-wave signature left by the tether far back in the ionosphere has been determined. The scientific expectations from the combined effort to measure the entity of those perturbations will be outlined taking in to account the used ground track sensor systems.

An analysis of the structure of flame balls encountered under microgravity conditions, which are stable due to radiant energy losses from H₂O, is carried out for fuel-lean hydrogen-air mixtures. It is seen that, because of radiation losses, in stable flame balls the maximum flame temperature remains close to the crossover temperature, at which the rate of the branching step H + O₂ -> OH + O equals that of the recombination step H + O₂ + M -> HO₂ + M. Under those conditions, all chemical intermediates have very small concentrations and follow the steady-state approximation, while the main species react according to the overall step 2H₂ + O₂-> 2H₂O; so that a one-step chemical-kinetic description, recently derived by asymptotic analysis for near-limit fuel-lean deflagrations, can be used with excellent accuracy to describe the whole branch of stable flame balls. Besides molecular diffusion in a binary-diffusion approximation, Soret diffusion is included, since this exerts a nonnegligible effect to extend the flammability range. When the large value of the activation energy of the overall reaction is taken into account, the leading-order analysis in the reaction-sheet approximation is seen to determine the flame ball radius as that required for radiant heat losses to remove enough of the heat released by chemical reaction at the flame to keep the flame temperature at a value close to crossover. The results are relevant to burning velocities at lean equivalent ratios and may influence fire-safety issues associated with hydrogen utilization.

n this paper the influence of an axial microgravity on the dynamic stability of axisymmetric slender liquid bridges between unequal disks is numerically studied by using a one-dimensional theory. The breaking of such liquid configurations is analyzed and the dependence of some overall characteristics of the breaking process on the value of axial microgravity, the geometry and the volume of the liquid bridge, as well as stability limits are obtained.

A one-dimensional inviscid slice model has been used to study numerically the influence of axial microgravity on the breaking of liquid bridges having a volume close to that of gravitationless minimum volume stability limit. Equilibrium shapes and stability limits have been obtained as well as the dependence of the volume of the two drops formed after breaking on both the length and the volume of the liquid bridge. The breaking process has also been studied experimentally. Good agreement has been found between theory and experiment for neutrally buoyant systems

The study of the stability of long liquid columns under microgravity was the purpose of one of the experiments carried out aboard Spacelab-Dl. In this paper a preliminary analysis of this experiment, mainly concerning the different liquid column breakages, is presented. As shown in the paper, the behaviour, both static and dynamic, of long liquid bridges can be accurately predicted by using available theoretical models.

In this paper mathematical expressions for minimum-volume stability limits and resonance frequencies of axisymmetric long liquid bridges are presented. These expressions are valid for a wide range of liquid bridge configurations, accounting for ef-fects like unequal disks and axial microgravity in the case of minimum-volume stability limits, and unequal disks, axial microgravity,non-zero viscosity and liquid bridge volume different from the cylindrical one in the case of resonance frequencies.

In this paper the influence of an axial microgravity on the minimum volume stability limit of axisymmetric liquid bridges between unequal disks is analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. The results here presented extend the knowledge of the static behaviour of liquid bridges to fluid configurations different from those studied up to now (almost equal disks). Experimental results, obtained by simulating microgravity conditions by the neutral buoyancy technique, are also presented and are shown to be in complete agreement with theoretical ones.

This paper deals with the stability limits of minimum volume and the breaking of axisymmetric liquid columns held by capillary forces between two concentric, circular solid disk of different radii. The problem has been analyzed both theoreti-cally and experimentally. A theoretical analysis concerning the breaking of liquid bridges has been performed by using a one-dimensional slice model already used in liquid bridge problems. Experiments have been carried out by using milli-metric liquid bridges, and minimum volume stability limits as well as the volumes of the drops resulting after breaking have been measured for a large number of liquid bridge configurations. Experimental results being in agreement with theoretical prediction.

This paper deals with the non-linear forced oscillations of axisymmetric long liquid bridges between equal disks. The dynamics of the liquid bridge has been analyzed by using a self-similar, one-dimensional model already used in similar problems. The influence of the dynamics on the static stability limits, as well as the main characteristics of the non-linear behaviour of long liquid bridges, have been studied with in the range of validity of the mathematical model used here.

The shape of the interface of a drop of liquid held by surface tension forces between two solid disks,a liquid bridge, depends on the geometry of the supporting disks, the volume of liquid and the external forces acting on the drop. Therefore, once the geometry of the supporting disks and the volume of liquid are fixed, and assuming that the value of the surface tension is known, a way to measure such external forces could be by measuring the deformation of the liquid bridge interface.

Large free liquid volumes, 30 mm in diameter and 80 mm long, anchored to coaxial discs, have been achieved during a sounding-rocket flight. As these flights provide some six minutes of microgravity and the formation of the liquid column takes only a matter of seconds, ample time is left for experimentation. The results of these trials are presented, and the equipment used to obtain them is briefly described.
