The stability of air bubbles in fresh concrete can have a profound influence of the potential durability of the system, because excessive losses during placement and consolidation can compromise the ability of the mixture to resist freezing and thawing. The stability of air void systems developed by some air entraining admixtures (AEAs) could be affected by the presence of some polycarboxylate-based water reducing admixtures (WRAs). The foam drainage test provides a means of measuring the potential stability of air bubbles in a paste. A barrier to acceptance of the test was that there was little investigation of the correlation with field performance. The work reported here was a limited exercise seeking to observe the stability of a range of currently available AEA/WRA combinations in the foam drainage test; then, to take the best and the worst and observe their stabilities on concrete mixtures in the lab. Based on the data collected, the foam drainage test appears to identify stable combinations of AEA and WRA.

Testing the efficiency of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) curing compounds is currently done following Test Method Iowa 901-D, May 2002. Concrete test specimens are prepared from mortar materials and are wet cured 5 hours before the curing compound is applied. All brands of curing compound submitted to the Iowa Department of Transportation are laboratory tested for comparative performance under the same test conditions. These conditions are different than field PCC paving conditions. Phase I tests followed Test Method Iowa 901-D, but modified the application amounts of the curing compound. Test results showed that the application of two coats of one-half thickness each increased efficiency compared to one full thickness coat. Phase II tests also used the modified application amounts, used a concrete mix (instead of a mortar mix) and applied curing compound a few minutes after molding. Measurements of losses, during spraying of the curing compound, were noted and were found to be significant. Test results showed that application amounts, testing techniques, concrete specimen mix design and spray losses do influence the curing compound efficiency. The significance of the spray losses indicates that the conventional test method being used (Iowa 901 D) should be revised.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for survival and weight of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), farmed in cages and ponds in Brazil, and to predict genetic gain under different scenarios. Survival was recorded as a binary response (dead or alive), during harvest time in the 2008 grow-out period. Genetic parameters were estimated using a Bayesian mixed linear-threshold animal model via Gibbs sampling. The breeding population consisted of 2,912 individual fish, which were analyzed together with the pedigree of 5,394 fish. The heritabilities estimates, with 95% posterior credible intervals, for tagging weight, harvest weight and survival were 0.17 (0.09-0.27), 0.21 (0.12-0.32) and 0.32 (0.22-0.44), respectively. Credible intervals show a 95% probability that the true genetic correlations were in a favourable direction. The selection for weight has a positive impact on survival. Estimated genetic gain was high when selecting for harvest weight (5.07%), and indirect gain for tagging weight (2.17%) and survival (2.03%) were also considerable.

The objective of this work was to assess and characterize two clones, 169 and 685, of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and to evaluate the wine produced from these grapes. The experiment was carried out in São Joaquim, SC, Brazil, during the 2009 harvest season. During grape ripening, the evolution of physical-chemical properties, phenolic compounds, organic acids, and anthocyanins was evaluated. During grape harvest, yield components were determined for each clone. Individual and total phenolics, individual and total anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity were evaluated for wine. The clones were also assessed regarding the duration of their phenological cycle. During ripening, the evolution of phenolic compounds and of physical-chemical parameters was similar for both clones; however, during harvest, significant differences were observed regarding yield, number of bunches per plant and berries per bunch, leaf area, and organic acid, polyphenol, and anthocyanin content. The wines produced from these clones showed significant differences regarding chemical composition. The clones showed similar phenological cycle and responses to bioclimatic parameters. Principal component analysis shows that clone 685 is strongly correlated with color characteristics, mainly monomeric anthocyanins, while clone 169 is correlated with individual phenolic compounds.

Finnish food producers' trade with Russia has experienced profound changes since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Simultaneously, the distribution systems of foodstuffs have changed remarkably. This study sheds some light into these changes and analyses the current situation in distribution systems of foodstuffs in Russia. In addition, the study discusses the possibilities of Finnish food producers to get more of their products to the shelves of Russian food retail stores. Before the 1998 financial crisis, the import of foreign foodstuffs was booming in Russia due to the overvalued rouble. As a result of the financial crisis, food import collapsed. The export of Finnish foodstuffs to Russia has been slowly recovering during the past few years, but in the most important product categories the pre-crisis levels have so far not been reached and maybe will not be reached. In certain product categories the growth has been only marginal. It seems that starting localproduction will become increasingly important in the future. This is further encouraged by the fact that Russian consumers favour domestic food products. Russian consumers are very price conscious and demand quality in food products. The perceived price-quality ratio is an important criterion in the purchase decision.The majority of foodstuff retail is still conducted via unorganised forms of trade (e.g. kiosks and marketplaces) but modern retail chains are developing at a fast pace in Russia. They are also expected to dominate the retail trade in foodstuffs over the unorganised forms of trade in the future. This will change the distribution systems as well. The retail chains are trying to shorten the distribution chain, similarly to what has been seen in the Western countries. This together with the strengthening of retail chains is likely to shrink the role of wholesalers, as the chains increasingly want to work directly with the producers. Many large retail chains are acquiring or have already acquired a distribution centre or centres in order to boost efficiency and control the flow of products. The strengthening of the retail chains also gives them power in negotiations, which the producers and distributors have to adjust to. For example store entry fees and retail chains' own private label products pose challenges to the food producers. In the food production sector the competition is fierce, as large Russianand foreign producers want to ensure their piece of the market. The largest producers utilise their size: they invest in big marketing campaigns and are willing to pay high entry fees to retail chains in order to secure a place on the store shelves and to build a strong brand in Russia. This complicates the situation from the viewpoint of small producers. Currently, the most popular type of distribution system among the interviewed Finnish food producers is based on a network of local distributors. There is, however, a strong consensus on the importanceof starting local production in order to be a serious actor in Russia in the future. Factors that hinder the starting of local production include the lack of local infrastructure and qualified staff, and the low risk tolerance of Finnish firms. Major barriers for entry in Russia are the actions of authorities, fierce competition, fragmented market and Finnish producers' heavy production costs. The suggested strategies for increasing the market share include focusing geographically or segment-wise, introducing new products, starting local production, andcooperation between Finnish producers. Smallness was one reason why Finnish producers had to cut down their operations in Russia due to the 1998 crisis. Smaller producers had fewer resources to tolerate losses during the period of crisis. Smallness is reflected also on trade negotiations with retail chains and distributors. It makes it harder to cope with the store entry fees and to differentiatefrom the mass of products propped up by expensive advertising. Finally, it makes it harder for Finnish producers to start or expand local production, as it is more difficult for a small producer to get financing and to tolerate the increased risks. Compensating for the smallness might become the crucial factor determining the future success of Finnish food producers in the Russian market.

The study evaluated the efficiency of chemical (phosphorylation) and physical (extrusion) modifications of the starch of broken rice. Results demonstrated a reduction in the moisture content of extruded and phosphorylated broken rice and an increase in the ash content of phosphorylated broken rice. Both phosphorylation and extrusion increased cold water binding capacity, swelling power, and solubility. Extruded and phosphorylated pastes were stable under refrigeration, but only extruded paste was stable when submitted to freezing. Phosphorylated paste had the lowest viscosity and the highest stability during heating, while the extruded one gelatinized without heating, but had higher losses during heating.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters intracellularly accumulated by many bacteria as an energy reserve material and carbon source. These biopolymers may be extracted from cells after their production phase, and the extraction process involves various individual operations to ensure adequate removal of the biopolymer from the cells. During this process, the following aspects should be considered: reduction of product losses during different stages of the process to obtain a highly pure product, preservation of physical and thermal characteristics, and use of low toxicity chemicals to achieve sustainable production and avoid harming the environment. The impact of the costs of PHA extraction on the total cost of the production process may account for over 50% of the end-value of the product. Within this context, several methods of PHA extraction have been reported in the literature. These methods include the use of solvents, chemical digestion, enzymatic digestion, mechanical extraction with high-pressure homogenization and ultrasound, extraction using supercritical fluids, or a combination of these methods. The present review of the literature shows strategies for extraction processes of PHAs produced by bacteria involving cell destabilization and/or breakage, recovery, and purification of the biopolymer.

The objective of this study was to evaluate growth and yield of papaya cv. Sunrise solo under trickle irrigation system configurations. A random block design was used with six treatments and four replications. Treatments were: T1- a 32 L h-1 micro sprinkler; T2 - a 43 L h-1 micro sprinkler and T3 - a 60 L h-1 micro sprinkler for four plants; T4 - Drip system with four emitters per plant on one lateral line per crop row; T5 - Drip system with eight emitters per plant on two laterals line per crop row; T6 - Drip system with four emitters per plant on one lateral line distributed as pig tail. The dripper flow rate was 4 L h-1and they were apart each other 0.50 m. Crop growth variables were measured every two weeks. Production variables were evaluated during harvest. The treatment that presented superiority was irrigated by micro sprinkler system with flow rate of 43 L h-1.
Liukuviin keskiarvoihin perustuvien kaupankäyntistrategioiden suoriutuminen Suomen osakemarkkinoilla

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, pystyykö teknistä analyysiä hyväksikäyttävä sijoittaja saamaan markkinatuottoa parempaa tuottoa Suomen osakemarkkinoilla. Tutkielman aineisto koostuu 24:stä vaihdetuimmasta osakkeesta Helsingin pörssissä. Nämä osakkeet muodostavat OMX25 –indeksin lukuun ottamatta yhtä osaketta, jota ei oltu vielä noteerattu tarkasteluperiodin alussa. Teknisen analyysin menetelminä käytetään neljää eripituista liukuvaa keskiarvoa (5, 20, 50 ja 100). Näistä muodostetaan liukuvien keskiarvojen kaksinkertaiset leikkausmenetelmät, joiden avulla saadaan osto- ja myyntisignaaleja kullekin osakkeelle. Tutkielman vertailukohteena käytetään perinteisen rahoitusteorian suosimaa osta ja pidä -strategiaa. Empiiristen testien tarkastelujakso on 1.1.2006 – 30.9.2010. Tutkielmassa havaittiin, että teknistä analyysiä hyväksikäyttäen voi saada markkinoita parempaa tuottoa, vaikka kaikki tulokset eivät olleet tilastollisesti merkittäviä. Tutkimuksessa ei otettu huomioon useista kaupoista syntyviä transaktiokustannuksia, veroja eikä korkotuottoa, jonka sijoittaja saisi pitäessään varoja esimerkiksi pankkitilillä ennen seuraavaa kauppaa. Erityisen huomionarvoista tässä tutkimuksessa oli se, että tekninen analyysi antoi sijoittajalle erittäin hyvän suojan finanssikriisin aikaiselta kurssilaskulta. Se antoi sijoittajalle selvän myyntisignaalin myydä osakkeet, ennen kuin kurssit alkoivat laskea rajusti.

A direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous machine for a small urban use electric vehicle is presented. The measured performance of the machine at the test bench as well as the performance over the modified New European Drive Cycle will be given. The effect of optimal current components, maximizing the efficiency and taking into account the iron loss, is compared with the simple id=0 – control. The machine currents and losses during the drive cycle are calculated and compared with each other.

Les récoltes de céréales sont souvent contaminées par des moisissures qui se développent pendant la récolte et l’entreposage et produisent des métabolites secondaires appelés mycotoxines. Le porc est reconnu pour être sensible au déoxynivalénol (DON). L’infection virale la plus importante chez le porc est causée par le virus du syndrome reproducteur et respiratoire porcin (VSRRP). Celui-ci provoque un syndrome grippal et des troubles de reproduction. L’objectif du présent projet était de déterminer l'effet in vitro de DON sur la réplication du VSRRP dans de lignées cellulaires permissives, MARC-145 et PAM, et déterminer in vivo l'impact de DON dans des aliments naturellement contaminés sur l’infection au VSRRP chez le porcelet. Tout d’abord, les cellules ont été incubées avec des doses croissantes de DON et ont été infectées avec du VSRRP pour évaluer la viabilité et la mortalité cellulaire, la réplication virale et l’expression de cytokines. Les résultats ont montré que les concentrations de DON de 560ng/ml et plus affectaient significativement la survie des cellules MARC-145 et PAM infectées par le VSRRP. En revanche, il y avait une augmentation significative de la viabilité et une réduction de la mortalité cellulaire à des concentrations de DON de 140 à 280 ng/ml pour les cellules PAM et de 70 à 280 ng/ml pour les cellules MARC-145 avec une réduction de l'effet cytopathique provoqué parle VSRRP. Au niveau in vivo, 30 porcelets divisés en 3 groupes de 10 porcelets et nourris pendant 2 semaines avec 3 différentes diètes naturellement ont été contaminées avec DON (0; 2,5 et 3,5 mg/kg). Les porcelets ont été subdivisés en 6 groupes, 3 groupes de 6 porcelets et ont été exposés au DON pendant 2 semaines et infectés par voie intratrachéale et intramusculaire avec le virus. Les 3 autres groupes de 4 porcelets servaient de contrôle non infectés. Les signes cliniques ont été enregistrés pendant 21 jours. La virémie a été évaluée par PCR. À la fin de l’expérimentation, les porcelets ont été euthanasiés et les lésions pulmonaires ont été évaluées. Les résultats ont montré que l’ingestion de DON à 3,5 mg/kg a augmenté l’effet du VSRRP sur la sévérité des signes cliniques, les lésions pulmonaires et la mortalité. L’ingestion de DON à 2,5 mg/kg a entrainé une augmentation de la virémie au jour 3 après l’infection mais sans impact sur les signes cliniques et les lésions pulmonaires. Introducción: la insuficiencia renal crónica IRC ha aumentado su prevalencia en los últimos años pasando de 44.7 pacientes por millón en 1993 a 538.46 pacientes por millón en 2010, los pacientes quienes reciben terapia de remplazo renal hemodiálisis en Colombia cada vez tienen una mayor sobrevida. El incremento de los pacientes y el incremento de la sobrevida nos enfocan a mejorar la calidad de vida de los años de diálisis. Metodología: se comparó la calidad de vida por medio del SF-36 en 154 pacientes con IRC estadio terminal en manejo con hemodiálisis, 77 pacientes incidentes y 77 pacientes prevalentes, pertenecientes a una unidad renal en Bogotá, Colombia. Resultados: se encontró una disminución de la calidad de vida en los componentes físicos (PCS) y metales (MCS) de los pacientes de hemodiálisis en ambos grupos. En el modelo de regresión logística la incapacidad laboral (p=0.05), el uso de catéter (p= 0,000), el bajo índice de masa corporal (p=0.021), la hipoalbuminemia (p=0,033) y la anemia (p=0,001) fueron factores determinantes en un 78,9% de baja calidad de vida de PCS en los pacientes incidentes con respecto a los prevalentes. En el MCS de los pacientes incidentes vs. Prevalentes se encontró la hipoalbuminemia (p=0.007), la anemia (p=0.001) y el acceso por catéter (p=0.001) como factores determinantes en un 70.6% de bajo MCS Conclusiones: la calidad de vida de los pacientes de diálisis se encuentra afectada con mayor repercusión en el grupo de los pacientes incidentes, se debe mejorar los aspectos nutricionales, hematológicos y de acceso vascular en este grupo.

Intensification of crop production in the mid-hills of Nepal has led to concerns that nitrogen loss by leaching may increase. This study estimated the amount of N leached during two years from rainfed terraces (bari-land) at three locations in Nepal. Maize or upland rice grown in the monsoon season was given either no nutrient inputs or inputs via either nitrogen fertilizer or farmyard manure. Nitrate concentration in soil solution was measured regularly with porous ceramic cup samplers and drainage estimated from a simple soil water balance. Estimated losses of nitrogen by leaching ranged from 0 to 63.5 kg N ha(-1) depending on location and the form of nitrogen applied. Losses from plots receiving no nutrient inputs were generally small (range: 0-35 kg N ha(-1)) and losses from plots where nitrogen was applied as manure (range: 2-41 kg N ha(-1)) were typically half those from plots with nitrogen applied as fertilizer. Losses during the post-monsoon crops of finger millet were small (typically <5% of total loss) although losses from the one site with blackgram were larger (about 13%). The highest concentrations of nitrate in solution were measured early in the season as the monsoon rains began and immediately following fertilizer applications. Leaching losses are likely to be minimised if manure is applied as a basal nutrient dressing followed by fertilizer nitrogen later in the season.

The release of genetically modified plants is governed by regulations that aim to provide an assessment of potential impact on the environment. One of the most important components of this risk assessment is an evaluation of the probability of gene flow. In this review, we provide an overview of the current literature on gene flow from transgenic plants, providing a framework of issues for those considering the release of a transgenic plant into the environment. For some plants gene flow from transgenic crops is well documented, and this information is discussed in detail in this review. Mechanisms of gene flow vary from plant species to plant species and range from the possibility of asexual propagation, short- or long-distance pollen dispersal mediated by insects or wind and seed dispersal. Volunteer populations of transgenic plants may occur where seed is inadvertently spread during harvest or commercial distribution. If there are wild populations related to the transgenic crop then hybridization and eventually introgression in the wild may occur, as it has for herbicide resistant transgenic oilseed rape (Brassica napus). Tools to measure the amount of gene flow, experimental data measuring the distance of pollen dispersal, and experiments measuring hybridization and seed survivability are discussed in this review. The various methods that have been proposed to prevent gene flow from genetically modified plants are also described. The current "transgenic traits'! in the major crops confer resistance to herbicides and certain insects. Such traits could confer a selective advantage (an increase in fitness) in wild plant populations in some circumstances, were gene flow to occur. However, there is ample evidence that gene flow from crops to related wild species occurred before the development of transgenic crops and this should be taken into account in the risk assessment process.

With the increasing production and consumption of potato and its products, glycoalkaloid (GA) formation and toxicity are likely to become an important focus for food safety researchers and public health agencies. Not only the presence of GA, particularly in the form of a-solanine and a-chaconine, but also the changes occurring as a result of various post-harvest handling practices and storage, are critical issues influencing the quality of stored potatoes. Studies on various factors (pre-harvest, during harvest anal post-harvest) affecting GA have been carried out from time to time, but it is difficult to compare the results of one study with another due to wide variation in the parameters chosen. This review aims to develop a clear understanding of these issues. Published information on the types of GA, their effects on health, their typical concentrations in potatoes, their formation mechanisms, and how their levels can be controlled by following appropriate post harvest practices and storage regimes are critically analysed. The levels of GA in potato can be controlled effectively by adopting appropriate post-harvest practices. Further studies are necessary, however, to investigate best practices, which either check completely or retard substantially their formation. (C) 2008 Society of Chemical Industry.
