Collecting regular personal reflections from first year teachers in rural and remote schools is challenging as they are busily absorbed in their practice, and separated from each other and the researchers by thousands of kilometres. In response, an innovative web-based solution was designed to both collect data and be a responsive support system for early career teachers as they came to terms with their new professional identities within rural and remote school settings. Using an emailed link to a web-based application named goingok.com, the participants are charting their first year plotlines using a sliding scale from ‘distressed’, ‘ok’ to ‘soaring’ and describing their self-assessment in short descriptive posts. These reflections are visible to the participants as a developing online journal, while the collections of de-identified developing plotlines are visible to the research team, alongside numerical data. This paper explores important aspects of the design process, together with the challenges and opportunities encountered in its implementation. A number of the key considerations for choosing to develop a web application for data collection are initially identified, and the resultant application features and scope are then examined. Examples are then provided about how a responsive software development approach can be part of a supportive feedback loop for participants while being an effective data collection process. Opportunities for further development are also suggested with projected implications for future research.

Emerging infectious diseases present a complex challenge to public health officials and governments; these challenges have been compounded by rapidly shifting patterns of human behaviour and globalisation. The increase in emerging infectious diseases has led to calls for new technologies and approaches for detection, tracking, reporting, and response. Internet-based surveillance systems offer a novel and developing means of monitoring conditions of public health concern, including emerging infectious diseases. We review studies that have exploited internet use and search trends to monitor two such diseases: influenza and dengue. Internet-based surveillance systems have good congruence with traditional surveillance approaches. Additionally, internet-based approaches are logistically and economically appealing. However, they do not have the capacity to replace traditional surveillance systems; they should not be viewed as an alternative, but rather an extension. Future research should focus on using data generated through internet-based surveillance and response systems to bolster the capacity of traditional surveillance systems for emerging infectious diseases.

In this paper we implemented six different boarding strategies (Wilma, Steffen, Reverse Pyramid, Random, Blocks and By letter) in order to minimize boarding time and turnaround time for Boeing 777 and Airbus 380 aircrafts by using Agent-based modelling approach. In the simulation, we divided passengers into six different categories which are group size more than 5 people, passengers with child, gold members, first class passengers, business class passengers and economy class passengers. Results from the simulation demonstrates Reverse Pyramid method is the best boarding method for Boeing 777 and Steffen method is the best boarding method for Airbus 380.

The Rhipicephalus micro plus genome is large and complex in structure, making it difficult to assemble a genome sequence and costly to resource the required bioinformatics. In light of this, a consortium of international collaborators was formed to pool resources to begin sequencing this genome. We have acquired and assembled genomic DNA into contigs that represent over 1.8 Gigabase pairs of DNA from gene-enriched regions of the R. micro plus genome. We also have several datasets containing transcript sequences from a number of gene expression experiments conducted by the consortium. A web-based resource was developed to enable the scientific community to access our datasets and conduct analysis through a web-based bioinformatics environment called YABI. The collective bioinformatics resource is termed CattleTickBase. Our consortium has acquired genomic and transcriptomic sequence data at approximately 0.9X coverage of the gene-coding regions of the R. microplus genome. The YABI tool will facilitate access and manipulation of cattle tick genome sequence data as the genome sequencing of R. microplus proceeds. During this process the CattleTickBase resource will continue to be updated. Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Australian Society for Parasitology Inc.
