Ao longo dos séculos, a China e o Japão foram criando histórias, representações, discursos e identidades que certas vezes se cruzaram e outras vezes se afastaram. Este trabalho é uma reflexão sobre cultura e interculturalidade, porque está relacionado com a produção e a circulação de significados (Hall, 1997:2), numa análise da identidade e da representação da China e do Japão e também das representações que estes dois países têm um do outro. Esta análise integra factos que vão desde a 1ª Guerra Mundial até à actualidade, tornando este estudo contemporâneo. Ao longo do meu trabalho, quando falo em representação, refiro-me à forma como o mundo é socialmente construído e representado por nós e para nós (Chris Barker 2000:8).

Na actividade tradutiva, situamo-nos num plano intercultural que cruza culturas diferenciadas, inerentes às línguas de partida e de chegada. De facto, ao traduzirmos um texto, defrontamo-nos sempre com um universo valorativo a que importa aceder, de modo a que o tradutor possa chegar a uma equivalência semântica e ideológica. É o que sucede, com especial relevância, no âmbito da tradução de textos literários, económicos e, até mesmo, científicos e técnicos. Por tal motivo, a análise dos valores presentes no discurso, que permite determinar a orientação ideológica aí inscrita, revela-se particularmente útil no plano intercultural da tradução. A sua determinação poderá ser feita, é certo, em função de vários enquadramentos mas, na nossa opinião, é a perspectiva de Oswald Ducrot, constituinte de uma Pragmática integrada na Semântica, que melhor se adequa à análise discursiva de acordo com estes objectivos. Trata-se assim de adoptar uma concepção teórica que permita abranger as duas componentes: por um lado, determinar o sentido, vector fundamental, no caso da tradução, entendido como orientação argumentativa inscrita nas estruturas linguísticas, por outro, através dos princípios de argumentação convocados, coincidentes com o recorte ideológico, aceder aos valores presentes no universo discursivo.

The legacy of nineteenth century social theory followed a “nationalist” model of society, assuming that analysis of social realities depends upon national boundaries, taking the nation-state as the primary unit of analysis, and developing the concept of methodological nationalism. This perspective regarded the nation-state as the natural - and even necessary - form of society in modernity. Thus, the constitution of large cities, at the end of the 19th century, through the intense flows of immigrants coming from diverse political and linguistic communities posed an enormous challenge to all social research. One of the most significant studies responding to this set of issues was The Immigrant Press and its Control, by Robert E. Park, one of the most prominent American sociologists of the first half of the 20th century. The Immigrant Press and its Control was part of a larger project entitled Americanization Studies: The Acculturation of Immigrant Group into American Society, funded by the Carnagie Corporation following World War I, taking as its goal to study the so-called “Americanization methods” during the 1920s. This paper revisits that particular work by Park to reveal how his detailed analysis of the role of the immigrant press overcame the limitations of methodological nationalism. By granting importance to language as a tool uniting each community and by showing how the strength of foreign languages expressed itself through the immigrant press, Park demonstrated that the latter produces a more ambivalent phenomenon than simply the assimilation of immigrants. On the one hand, the immigrant press served as a connecting force, driven by the desire to preserve the mother tongue and culture while at the same time awakening national sentiments that had, until then, remained diffuse. Yet, on the other hand, it facilitated the adjustment of immigrants to the American context. As a result, Park’s work contributes to our understanding of a particular liminal moment inherent within many intercultural contexts, the space between emigrant identity (emphasizing the country of origin) and immigrant identity (emphasizing the newly adopted country). His focus on the role played by media in the socialization of immigrant groups presaged later work on this subject by communication scholars. Focusing attention on Park’s research leads to other studies of the immigrant experience from the same period (e.g., Thomas & Znaniecki, The Polish Peasant in Europe and America), and also to insights on multi-presence and interculturality as significant but often overlooked phenomena in the study of immigrant socialization.

Na sociedade contemporânea, a educação tornou-se um desafio porque a escola e a sociedade vivem numa constante dicotomia à qual os especialistas chamam de "daltonismo cultural" contrapondo ao "apelo" (in)consciente dos alunos que reflectem o "arco-íris" da diversidade da nossa heterogénea sociedade. Reconhecemos que a sociedade delega na escola o papel primordial da educação e que esta reflecte o desenvolvimento da sociedade que apela a uma educação intercultural e inclusiva, para que todos os alunos, independentemente das suas necessidades e especificidades, tenham direito a uma educação efectiva e valorativa. Assim sendo, esta irá procurar compreender os caminhos do "Movimento Escola Inclusiva" e da interculturalidade, passando pela compreensão destes fenómenos que se inter-relacionam e complementam. Para além de uma visão global desta temática, iremos incidir a nossa atenção no âmbito da Educação Pré-escolar. A escolha deste nível educativo teve em consideração a realização de um estudo de caso acerca do trabalho transdisciplinar entre docente (educador de infância) e terapeutas (ocupacional e da fala) para a inclusão de uma criança, de cinco anos de idade, com características do espectro do autismo numa sala do Pré-escolar no Grande Porto, Portugal.

The workforce in organizations today is becoming increasingly diverse. Consequently the role of diversity management is heavily discussed with respect to the question how diversity influences the productivity of a group. Empirical studies show that on one hand there is a potential for increasing productivity but on the other hand it might be as well that conflicts arise due to the heterogeneity of the group. Usually according empirical studies are based on interviews, questionnaires and/or observations. These methods imply that answers are highly selective and filtered. In order to make the invisible visible, to have access to mental models of team members the paper will present an empirical study on the self-understanding of groups based on an innovative research method, called “mind-scripting”.

Extended and networked enterprises distribute the design of products, planning of the production process, and manufacturing regionally if not globally. Employees are therefore confronted with collaborative work over remote sites. A cost effective collaboration depends highly on the organization maintaining a common understanding for this kind of work and a suitable support with information and communication technology. The usual face to face work is going to be replaced at least partly if not totally by computer mediated collaboration. Creating and maintaining virtual teams is a challenge to work conditions as well as technology. New developments on cost-effective connections are providing not only vision and auditory perception but also haptic perception. Research results for improving remote collaboration are presented. Individual, social and cultural aspects are considered as new requirements on the employees of networked and extended enterprises.

This paper provides a longitudinal, empirical view of the multifaceted and reciprocal processes of organizational learning in a context of self-managed teams. Organizational learning is seen as a social construction between people and actions in a work setting. The notion of learning as situated (Brown & Duguid 1989, Lave& Wenger 1991, Gherardi & al. 1998, Easterby-Smith & Araujo 1999, Abma 2003) opens up the possibility for placing the focus of research on learning in the community rather than in individual learning processes. Further, in studying processes in their social context, we cannot avoid taking power relations into consideration (Contu & Willmott 2003). The study is based on an action research with a methodology close to the ‘democratic dialogue’ presented by Gustavsen (2001). This gives a ground for research into how the learning discourse developed in the case study organization over a period of 5 years, during which time the company abandoned a middle management level of hierarchy and the teams had to figure out how to work as self-managed units. This paper discusses the (re)construction of power relations and its role in organizational learning. Power relations are discussed both in vertical and horizontal work relations. A special emphasis is placed on the dialectic between managerial aims and the space for reflection on the side of employees. I argue that learning is crucial in the search for the limits for empowerment and that these limits are negotiated both in actions and speech. This study unfolds a purpose-oriented learning process, constructing an open dialogue, and describes a favourable context for creative, knowledge building communities.

Emergent architectures and paradigms targeting reconfigurable manufacturing systems increasingly rely on intelligent modules to maximize the robustness and responsiveness of modern installations. Although intelligent behaviour significantly minimizes the occurrence of faults and breakdowns it does not exclude them nor can prevent equipment’s normal wear. Adequate maintenance is fundamental to extend equipments’ life cycle. It is of major importance the ability of each intelligent device to take an active role in maintenance support. Further this paradigm shift towards “embedded intelligence”, supported by cross platform technologies, induces relevant organizational and functional changes on local maintenance teams. On the one hand, the possibility of outsourcing maintenance activities, with the warranty of a timely response, through the use of pervasive networking technologies and, on the other hand, the optimization of local maintenance staff are some examples of how IT is changing the scenario in maintenance. The concept of e-maintenance is, in this context, emerging as a new discipline with defined socio-economic challenges. This paper proposes a high level maintenance architecture supporting maintenance teams’ management and offering contextualized operational support. All the functionalities hosted by the architecture are offered to the remaining system as network services. Any intelligent module, implementing the services’ interface, can report diagnostic, prognostic and maintenance recommendations that enable the core of the platform to decide on the best course of action.

A Landeskunde (conteúdos socioculturais) não tem estado imune às mudanças epistemológicas que têm influenciado o pensamento contemporâneo, pelo que as abordagens de que tem sido objecto, variam continuamente. O conceito, que começou por englobar a mera informação sobre a/s sociedade/s, foi, nos anos 70, objecto de uma mudança radical na medida em que o conceito de cultura passou a ter novas definições: eliminando-se a dicotomia entre Kultur e Zivilisation, passou a considerar-se o sentido alargado de cultura, baseada no saber colectivo, como sendo, segundo Bettermann, (2001:1215) “alle Lebensbereiche, -gewonheiten und – äusserungen zwischenmenschlicherbeziehungen”.

In today’s globalized world, communication students need to be capable of efficiently communicating across the globe. At ISCAP, part of the 3rd year syllabus in Translation and New Technologies course is focused on culture and the need to be culturally knowledgeable. We argue the approach to incorporate cultural aspects in HE needs to be studentcentered, in order to encompass not only intercultural awareness, but also the 21st century skills students need to be successful and competent citizens. Additionally, as studies have shown, the manipulation of digital tools fosters greater student involvement in learning activities. We have adopted Digital Storytelling - multimodal storytelling technique - to promote a personal, student-centered reflection on intercultural communication. We intend to present student and teacher perspectives on this learning experience and assess its relevance in HE contexts, based on the content analysis of student expressed perspectives on this activity as well as a multimodal analysis of the digital stories created. A preliminary analysis of our case study has demonstrated that Digital Storytelling potentiates two complimentary types of reflection: on the one hand, students felt the need to reflect on their own intercultural knowledge, create and adapt their finding in the form of a story; on the other hand, viewing others’ stories they have raised questions and demonstrated points of view otherwise ignored.
