The modern industrial environment is populated by a myriad of intelligent devices that collaborate for the accomplishment of the numerous business processes in place at the production sites. The close collaboration between humans and work machines poses new interesting challenges that industry must overcome in order to implement the new digital policies demanded by the industrial transition. The Industry 5.0 movement is a companion revolution of the previous Industry 4.0, and it relies on three characteristics that any industrial sector should have and pursue: human centrality, resilience, and sustainability. The application of the fifth industrial revolution cannot be completed without moving from the implementation of Industry 4.0-enabled platforms. The common feature found in the development of this kind of platform is the need to integrate the Information and Operational layers. Our thesis work focuses on the implementation of a platform addressing all the digitization features foreseen by the fourth industrial revolution, making the IT/OT convergence inside production plants an improvement and not a risk. Furthermore, we added modular features to our platform enabling the Industry 5.0 vision. We favored the human centrality using the mobile crowdsensing techniques and the reliability and sustainability using pluggable cloud computing services, combined with data coming from the crowd support. We achieved important and encouraging results in all the domains in which we conducted our experiments. Our IT/OT convergence-enabled platform exhibits the right performance needed to satisfy the strict requirements of production sites. The multi-layer capability of the framework enables the exploitation of data not strictly coming from work machines, allowing a more strict interaction between the company, its employees, and customers.

The fourth industrial revolution is paving the way for Industrial Internet of Things applications where industrial assets (e.g., robotic arms, valves, pistons) are equipped with a large number of wireless devices (i.e., microcontroller boards that embed sensors and actuators) to enable a plethora of new applications, such as analytics, diagnostics, monitoring, as well as supervisory, and safety control use-cases. Nevertheless, current wireless technologies, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and even private 5G networks, cannot fulfill all the requirements set up by the Industry 4.0 paradigm, thus opening up new 6G-oriented research trends, such as the use of THz frequencies. In light of the above, this thesis provides (i) a broad overview of the main use-cases, requirements, and key enabling wireless technologies foreseen by the fourth industrial revolution, and (ii) proposes innovative contributions, both theoretical and empirical, to enhance the performance of current and future wireless technologies at different levels of the protocol stack. In particular, at the physical layer, signal processing techniques are being exploited to analyze two multiplexing schemes, namely Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Chirp Division Multiplexing, which seem promising for high-frequency wireless communications. At the medium access layer, three protocols for intra-machine communications are proposed, where one is based on LoRa at 2.4 GHz and the others work in the THz band. Different scheduling algorithms for private industrial 5G networks are compared, and two main proposals are described, i.e., a decentralized scheme that leverages machine learning techniques to better address aperiodic traffic patterns, and a centralized contention-based design that serves a federated learning industrial application. Results are provided in terms of numerical evaluations, simulation results, and real-world experiments. Several improvements over the state-of-the-art were obtained, and the description of up-and-running testbeds demonstrates the feasibility of some of the theoretical concepts when considering a real industry plant.

Industry 4.0 refers to the 4th industrial revolution and at its bases, we can see the digitalization and the automation of the assembly line. The whole production process has improved and evolved thanks to the advances made in networking, and AI studies, which include of course machine learning, cloud computing, IoT, and other technologies that are finally being implemented into the industrial scenario. All these technologies have in common a need for faster, more secure, robust, and reliable communication. One of the many solutions for these demands is the use of mobile communication technologies in the industrial environment, but which technology is better suited for these demands? Of course, the answer isn’t as simple as it seems. The 4th industrial revolution has a never seen incomparable potential with respect to the previous ones, every factory, enterprise, or company have different network demands, and even in each of these infrastructures, the demands may diversify by sector, or by application. For example, in the health care industry, there may be e a need for increased bandwidth for the analysis of high-definition videos or, faster speeds in order to have analytics occur in real-time, and again another application might be higher security and reliability to protect patients’ data. As seen above, choosing the right technology for the right environment and application, considers many things, and the ones just stated are but a speck of dust with respect to the overall picture. In this thesis, we will investigate a comparison between the use of two of the available technologies in use for the industrial environment: Wi-Fi 6 and 5G Private Networks in the specific case of a steel factory.

As a witness on the industrialization in Bologna, since its first generation was born in the late 1760, the Battiferro lock has been coping with the innovation that the city experienced throughout the centuries, until it has lost its functionality due to the technological development for which Bologna’s canals were gradually covered starting from the 1950s under Giuseppe Dozza ’s administration, as part of the reconstruction, reclamation and urban requalification that was carried out in the aftermath the World War II and which involved the whole city. The interest of the research carried out on this case study was primarily to reintroduce the landmark that is still intact, to what is considered to be the fourth generation of the industrial revolution, namely in the construction field, which is recognized as Construction 4.0, by means of the Historic (or Heritage) Information Modeling HBIM and Virtual Reality (VR) application. A scan-to-BIM approach was followed to create 3D as-built BIM model, as a first step towards the storytelling of the abandoned industrial built asset in VR environment, or as a seed for future applications such as Digital Twins (DT), heritage digital learning, sustainable impact studies, and/or interface with other interfaces such as GIS. Based on the HBIM product, examples of the primary BIM deliverables such as 2D layouts is given, then a workflow to VR is proposed and investigated the reliability of data and the type of users that may benefit of the VR experience, then the potential future development of the model is investigated, with comparison of a relatively similar experience in the UK.

The Information Society (IS) may be taken as a geopolitical organization which started after the Third Industrial Revolution, having direct impact on the use of information and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The expression arose as techno-social paradigm change in the post-industrial society, aiming to use information as currency to the society-in-progress at that time. In Brazil it has become stronger with the Programa Sociedade da Informacao no Brasil-Livro Verde, lunched by the Ministerio da Ciencia e Tecnologia, in September 2000 without any discussion with the civil society to formulate the main document. Our main goal in this article is to discuss the Information Society in contemporary times, and also the organized and conscious use of information, looking for key-concepts to a better understanding of it, from some topics as digital inclusion-exclusion to the use of digital informational resources.

What interests me more here is the so-called Historical Inevitability. It is a concept intimately linked with Human Choice and Freedom. There is a long history of debate around it among the western thinkers. The protestant thinkers, and particularly its Calvinist brand laid much emphasis upon predestination. The modern thinkers, freed from the theological trappings, questioned the Church imposed limitations to the capacity of human reasoning. The progress of science and technologies supported by it through the Industrial Revolution and thereafter seemed to endorse this new self-confidence. However, the miseries brought upon mankind by regional and world wars fuelled by the same technologies have made mankind wary of its faith upon scientific progress. The promises of modernization have left the greater part of mankind without its benefits, and even the rest of mankind is unsure of living in a safe and uncontaminated environment.

Global warming is a major concern nowadays. Weather conditions are changing, and it seems that human activity is one of the main causes. In fact, since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the burning of fossil fuels has increased the nonnatural emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that absorbs the infrared radiation produced by the reflection of the sunlight on the Earth’s surface, trapping the heat in the atmosphere. Global warming and the associated climate changes are being the subject of intensive research due to their major impact on social, economic, and health aspects of human life. This paper studies the global warming trend in the perspective of dynamical systems and fractional calculus, which is a new standpoint in this context. Worldwide distributed meteorological stations and temperature records for the last 100 years are analysed. It is shown that the application of Fourier transforms and power law trend lines leads to an assertive representation of the global warming dynamics and a simpler analysis of its characteristics.
