A synthetic strategy for fabricating a dense amine functionalized self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on hydroxylated surfaces is presented. The assembly steps are monitored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared- attenuated total reflection, atomic force microscopy, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, UV-vis surface spectroscopy, contact angle wettability, and contact potential difference measurements. The method applies alkylbromide-trichlorosilane for the fabrication of the SAM followed by surface transformation of the bromine moiety to amine by a two-step procedure: S(N)2 reaction that introduces the hidden amine, phthalimide, followed by the removal of the protecting group and exposing the free amine. The use of phthalimide moiety in the process enabled monitoring the substitution reaction rate on the surface (by absorption spectroscopy) and showed first-order kinetics. The simplicity of the process, nonharsh reagents, and short reaction time allow the use of such SAMs in molecular nanoelectronics applications, where complete control of the used SAM is needed. The different molecular dipole of each step of the process, which is verified by DFT calculations, supports the use of these SAMs as means to tune the electronic properties of semiconductors and for better synergism between SAMs and standard microelectronics processes and devices.

We present the development of a drug-loaded triple-layer platform consisting of thin film biodegradable polymers, in a properly designed form for the desired gradual degradation. Poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA (65:35), PLGA (75:25)) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were grown by spin coating technique, to synthesize the platforms with the order PCL/PLGA (75:25)/PLGA (65:35) that determine their degradation rates. The outer PLGA (65:35) layer was loaded with dipyridamole, an antiplatelet drug. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) in the Vis-far UV range was used to determine the nanostructure, as well as the content of the incorporated drug in the as-grown platforms. In situ and real-time SE measurements were carried out using a liquid cell for the dynamic evaluation of the fibrinogen and albumin protein adsorption processes. Atomic force microscopy studies justified the SE results concerning the nanopores formation in the polymeric platforms, and the dominant adsorption mechanisms of the proteins, which were defined by the drug incorporation in the platforms. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. A method called "SymbolDesign" is proposed that can be used to design user-centered interfaces for pen-based input devices. It can also extend the functionality of pointer input devices such as the traditional computer mouse or the Camera Mouse, a camera-based computer interface. Users can create their own interfaces by choosing single-stroke movement patterns that are convenient to draw with the selected input device and by mapping them to a desired set of commands. A pattern could be the trace of a moving finger detected with the Camera Mouse or a symbol drawn with an optical pen. The core of the SymbolDesign system is a dynamically created classifier, in the current implementation an artificial neural network. The architecture of the neural network automatically adjusts according to the complexity of the classification task. In experiments, subjects used the SymbolDesign method to design and test the interfaces they created, for example, to browse the web. The experiments demonstrated good recognition accuracy and responsiveness of the user interfaces. The method provided an easily-designed and easily-used computer input mechanism for people without physical limitations, and, with some modifications, has the potential to become a computer access tool for people with severe paralysis.

The physicochemical properties of cheese and milk gels are greatly influenced by molecular interactions between the casein proteins involving calcium. Novel experiments were designed to investigate the relationship between insoluble caseinbound cations and rheological properties of Cheddar cheese and rennet-induced milk gels. Cheddar cheese and rennet-induced milk gels were supplemented with Mg2+ or Sr2+ to compare their effects on their rheological properties to those previously reported in literature for Ca2+ supplementation. Sr2+ displayed behaviour similar to Ca2+ as observed by its ability to increase the rigidity of cheese and rennet milk gels and also decrease cheese meltability. Mg+2 had no influence on cheese rheological properties and was greatly inferior to Ca2+ and Sr2+ in its ability to increase rennet milk gel elasticity. Cheddar cheese was supplemented with the calcium-chelating salts trisodium citrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate or disodium EDTA, in an attempt to reduce the CCP content of cheese and thereby modify its rheological and functional properties. TSC and EDTA were successful in decreasing cheese CCP, whereas DSP caused an initial increase in CCP content. Cheddar cheese was supplemented with chlorides of iron, copper and zinc at salting to investigate the effects of concentrations of these elements in excess of those found innately or commonly in fortification studies, with emphasis on mineral equilibria changes and resultant alteration of rheological properties. Zinc addition was the only added metal that significantly influenced cheese rheological properties, leading to an increase in cheese rigidity and decreased cheese melt at elevated temperatures. Gum tragacanth was used as a fat-replacer in the manufacture of reduced-fat Cheddar cheese, in an attempt to improve the rheological, functional and sensory properties of reduced-fat Cheddar. Overall, the experimental work reported in this thesis generated new knowledge and theories about how casein-mineral interactions influence rheological properties of casein systems.

The effect of fortification of skim milk powder and sodium caseinate on Cheddar cheeses was investigated. SMP fortification led to decreased moisture, increased yield, higher numbers of NSLAB and reduced proteolysis. The functional and texture properties were also affected by SMP addition and formed a harder, less meltable cheese than the control. NaCn fortification led to increased moisture, increased yield, decreased proteolysis and higher numbers of NSLAB. The functional and textural properties were affected by fortification with NaCn and formed a softer cheese that had similar or less melt than the control. Reducing the lactose:casein ratio of Mozzarella cheese by using ultrafiltration led to higher pH, lower insoluble calcium, lower lactose, galactose and lactic acid levels in the cheese. The texture and functional properties of the cheese was affected by varying the lactose:casein ratio and formed a harder cheese that had similar melt to the control later in ripening. The flavour and bake properties were also affected by decreased lactose:casein ratio; the cheeses had lower acid flavour and blister colour than the control cheese. Varying the ratio of αs1:β-casein in Cheddar cheese affected the texture and functionality of the cheese but did not affect insoluble calcium, proteolysis or pH. Increasing the ratio of αs1:β-casein led to cheese with lower meltability and higher hardness without adverse effects on flavour. Using camel chymosin in Mozzarella cheese instead of calf chymosin resulted in cheese with lower proteolysis, higher softening point, higher hardness and lower blister quantity. The texture and functional properties that determine the shelf life of Mozzarella were maintained for a longer ripening period than when using calf chymosin therefore increasing the window of functionality of Mozzarella. In summary, the results of the trials in this thesis show means of altering the texture, functional, rheology and sensory properties of Mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses.

We present the design and experimental implementation of a power harvesting metamaterial. A maximum of 36.8% of the incident power from a 900 MHz signal is experimentally rectified by an array of metamaterial unit cells. We demonstrate that the maximum harvested power occurs for a resistive load close to 70 Ω in both simulation and experiment. The power harvesting metamaterial is an example of a functional metamaterial that may be suitable for a wide variety of applications that require power delivery to any active components integrated into the metamaterial. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The density of reactive carboxyl groups on the surface of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NP) was modulated using a combination of high-molecular weight (MW) encapped and low MW non-encapped PLGA. Carboxyl groups were activated using carbodiimide chemistry and conjugated to bovine serum albumin and a model polyclonal antibody. Activation of carboxyl,groups in solution-phase PLGA prior to NP formation was compared with a postformation activation of peripheral carboxyl groups on intact NP. Activation before or after NP formation did not influence conjugation efficiency to NP prepared using 100% of the low-MW PLGA. The effect of steric stabilization using poly(vinyl alcohol) reduced conjugation of a polyclonal antibody from 62 mu g/(mg NP) to 32 mu g/(mg NP), but enhanced particulate stability. Increasing the amount of a high-MW PLGA also reduced Conjugation, with the activation post-formation still superior to the preformation approach. Drug release studies showed that high proportions of high-MW PLGA in the NP produced a longer sustained release profile of a model drug (celecoxib). It can be concluded that activating intact PLGA NP is superior to activating component parts prior to NP formation. Also, high MW PLGA could be used to prolong drug release, but at the expense of conjugation efficiency on to the NP surface. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res 87A: 873-884, 2008
