Owing to fundamental reasons of symmetry, liquid crystals are soft materials. This softness allows long length-scales, large susceptibilities and the existence of modulated phases, which respond readily to external fields. Liquid crystals with such phases are tunable, self-assembled, photonic band gap materials; they offer exciting opportunities both in basic science and in technology. Since the density of photon states is suppressed in the stop band and is enhanced at the band edges, these materials may be used as switchable filters or as mirrorless lasers. Disordered periodic liquid crystal structures can show random lasing. We highlight recent advances in this rapidly growing area, and discuss future prospects in emerging liquid crystal materials. Liquid crystal elastomers and orientationally ordered nanoparticle assemblies are of particular interest. © 2006 The Royal Society.

The recently introduced nested sampling algorithm allows the direct and efficient calculation of the partition function of atomistic systems. We demonstrate its applicability to condensed phase systems with periodic boundary conditions by studying the three dimensional hard sphere model. Having obtained the partition function, we show how easy it is to calculate the compressibility and the free energy as functions of the packing fraction and local order, verifying that the transition to crystallinity has a very small barrier, and that the entropic contribution of jammed states to the free energy is negligible for packing fractions above the phase transition. We quantify the previously proposed schematic phase diagram and estimate the extent of the region of jammed states. We find that within our samples, the maximally random jammed configuration is surprisingly disordered.

The catastrophic failure of heterogeneous brittle materials under impact loading is not fully understood. To describe the catastrophic failure behavior of heterogeneous brittle materials under impact loading, an elasto-statistical-brittle (ESB) model is proposed in this paper. The ESB model characterizes the disordered inhomogeneity of material at mesoscopic scale with the statistical description of the shear strength of mesoscopic units. If the applied shear stress reaches the strength, the mesoscopic unit fails, which causes degradation in the shear modulus of the material. With a simplified ESB model, the failure wave in brittle material under uni-axial compression is analyzed. It is shown that the failure wave is a wave of strain or particle velocity resulted from the catastrophic fracture in an elastically stressed brittle media when the impact velocity reaches a critical value. In addition, the failure wave causes an increase in the rear surface velocity, which agrees well with experimental observations. The critical condition to generate failure wave and the speed of failure wave are also obtained.

Introduction: Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a highly prevalent condition associated with orofacial and dentofacial characteristics. Objective: the aim of this study was to verify the association of dental malocclusion, molar relationship, crossbite, open bite, overjet, overbite, and crowding with SDB in children aged 7-9 years.Materials and methods: Participating schools were selected randomly from within the public elementary school system. in the first phase of the study, the parents of 1216 children aged between 7 and 9 years old completed the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) questionnaire and the children had to participate in a dental examination. the evaluation of occlusion was divided into sagittal analysis, vertical analysis, and transverse analysis. in the second phase, 60 children were selected randomly to be undergone polysomnography (PSG) at a sleep clinic. Results: Among the children included, 242 (19.9%) children had normal occlusion. of the 60 children, 50 underwent PSG and 40(80%) had SDB. the crossbite and open bite showed association with SDB, p = 0.04 in both. Conclusion: Crossbite and open bite malocclusions were associated with SDB, and may be predictive of SDB in children. Studies with larger numbers of participants are needed to investigate the association of other malocclusions with SDB, and randomized clinical trials are also needed to see whether orthodontic and/or functional jaw orthopedic treatment is an option for treating children with malocclusion and SDB. If you walk on sand, it supports your weight. How do the disordered forces between particles in sand organize, to keep you from sinking? This simple question is surprisingly difficult to answer experimentally: measuring forces in three dimensions, between deeply buried grains, is challenging. Here we describe experiments in which we have succeeded in measuring forces inside a granular packing subject to controlled deformations. We connect the measured micro-scale forces to the macro-scale packing force response with an averaging, mean field calculation. This calculation explains how the combination of packing structure and contact deformations produce the observed nontrivial mechanical response of the packing, revealing a surprising microscopic particle deformation enhancement mechanism.

The self-consistent electron potential in a current-carrying disordered quantum wire is spatially inhomogeneous due to the formation of resistivity dipoles across scattering centres. In this paper it is argued that these inhomogeneities in the potential result in a suppression of the differential conductance of such a wire at finite applied voltage. A semi-classical argument allows this suppression, quadratic in the voltage, to be related directly to the amount of intrinsic defect scattering in the wire. This result is then tested against numerical calculations.

Analysis and modeling of X-ray and neutron Bragg and total diffraction data show that the compounds referred to in the literature as “Pd(CN)2”and“Pt(CN)2” are nanocrystalline materials containing of small sheets of vertex-sharing square-planar M(CN)4 units, layered in a disordered manner with an intersheet separation of 3.44 A at 300 K. The small size of the crystallites means that the sheets’ edges form a significant fraction of each material. The Pd(CN)2 nanocrystallites studied using total neutron diffraction are terminated by water and the Pt(CN)2 nanocrystallites by ammonia, in place of half of the terminal cyanide groups, thus maintaining charge neutrality. The neutron samples contain sheets of approximate dimensions 30 A x 30 A. For sheets of the size we describe, our structural models predict compositions of Pd(CN)2-xH2O and Pt(CN)2-yNH3 (x = y = 0.29). These values are in good agreement with those obtained from total neutron diffraction and thermal analysis, and are also supported by infrared and Raman spectroscopy measurements. It is also possible to prepare related compounds Pd(CN)2-pNH3 and Pt(CN)2-qH2O, in which the terminating groups are exchanged. Additional samples showing sheet sizes in the range 10 A x 10 A (y = 0.67) to 80 A x 80 A (p = q = 0.12), as determined by X-ray diffraction, have been prepared. The related mixed-metal phase, Pd1/2Pt1/2(CN)2-qH2O(q = 0.50), is also nanocrystalline (sheet size 15 A x 15 A). In all cases, the interiors of the sheets are isostructural with those found in Ni(CN)2. Removal of the final traces of water or ammonia by heating results in decomposition of the compounds to Pd and Pt metal, or in the case of the mixed-metal cyanide, the alloy, Pd1/2Pt1/2, making it impossible to prepare the simple cyanides, Pd(CN)2, Pt(CN)2 or Pd1/2Pt1/2(CN)2, by this method.

The organization of non-crystalline polymeric materials at a local level, namely on a spatial scale between a few and 100 a, is still unclear in many respects. The determination of the local structure in terms of the configuration and conformation of the polymer chain and of the packing characteristics of the chain in the bulk material represents a challenging problem. Data from wide-angle diffraction experiments are very difficult to interpret due to the very large amount of information that they carry, that is the large number of correlations present in the diffraction patterns. We describe new approaches that permit a detailed analysis of the complex neutron diffraction patterns characterizing polymer melts and glasses. The coupling of different computer modelling strategies with neutron scattering data over a wide Q range allows the extraction of detailed quantitative information on the structural arrangements of the materials of interest. Proceeding from modelling routes as diverse as force field calculations, single-chain modelling and reverse Monte Carlo, we show the successes and pitfalls of each approach in describing model systems, which illustrate the need to attack the data analysis problem simultaneously from several fronts.

Visible photoluminescence (PL) was observed for the first time at room temperature in structurally disordered calcium strontium tungstate powder, Ca0.60Sr0.40WO4 (CSW), obtained by the polymeric precursor method. The PL behavior of CSW powders has been analyzed as a function of the disorder rate, based on experimental and theoretical studies. Quantum mechanical theory based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level has been employed to study the electronic structure of two periodic models representing both crystalline and disordered powders. Their electronic structures have been analyzed in terms of density of states, band dispersion and charge densities. The calculations indicate a break in symmetry when passing from crystalline to disordered models, creating localized electronic levels above the valence band. Moreover, a negative charge transfer process takes place from the [WO3] cluster to the [WO4] cluster. The polarization induced by the break in symmetry and the existence of localized levels favors the creation of trapped holes and electrons, originating the PL phenomenon. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The SrWO4 (SWO) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method and annealed at different temperatures. The SWO structure was obtained by X-ray diffraction and the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) spectra was measured. The PL results reveal that the structural order-disorder degree in the SWO lattice influences in the PL emission intensity. Only the structurally order-disordered samples present broad and intense PL band in the visible range. To understand the origin of this phenomenon, we performed quantum-mechanical calculations with crystalline and order-disordered SWO periodic models. Their electronic structures were analyzed in terms of band structure. The appearance of localized levels in the band gap of the order-disordered structure was evidenced and is a favorable condition for the intense PL to occur.

Intense and broad photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was observed on structurally disordered Ba[Zr0.25Ti0.75]O-3 (BZT) powders synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. BZT powders were annealed at 573 K for different times and at 973 K for 2 h in oxygen atmosphere. The single-phase cubic perovskite structure of the powder annealed at 973 K for 2 It was identified by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman techniques. PL emission increased with the increase of annealing time, which reached its maximum value in the powder annealed at 573 K for 192 h. First principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and disordered models. The theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy indicate that the presence of intermediary energy levels in the band gap is favorable for the intense and broad PL emission at room temperature in disordered BZT powders. The PL behavior is probably due the existence of a charge gradient on the disordered structure, denoted by means of a charge transfer process from [TiO5]-[ZrO6] or [TiO6]-[ZrO5] clusters to [TiO6]-[ZrO6] clusters. Intense photoluminescence in highly disordered (amorphous) BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrTiO3 prepared by the polymeric precursor method was observed at room temperature. The emission band maxima from the three materials are in the visible region and depend on the exciting wavelength. The origin of the photoluminescence was not exactly identified. However, the line shape indicates that confinement effects are not probable. The experimental results indicate that it could be related to the disordered perovskite structure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
