Microelectrode cyclic voltammetry (MV) has been employed to investigate the micellar properties of solutions of homologous alkyltrimethylammonium bromides, RMe(3)ABr, R = C(10), C(12), and C(14), in water and in the presence of added NaBr. The micellar self-diffusion coefficient was calculated from the limiting current for the reversible electron transfer of micelle-bound ferrocene. From the values of this property, other parameters were calculated, including the micellar hydrodynamic radius, RH, and aggregation number, N(agg); the latter was also theoretically calculated. We determined the values of the diffusion coefficient as a function of various experimental variables and observed the following trends: The diffusion coefficient decreases as a function of increasing surfactant concentration (no additional electrolyte added); it decreases as a function of increasing surfactant concentration at fixed NaBr concentration; and it shows a complex dependence (increase then decrease) on the NaBr concentration at a fixed RMe(3)ABr concentration. The value of the intermicellar interaction parameter decreases and then increases as a function of increasing NaBr concentration. These results are discussed in terms of intermicellar, interactions and the effect of NaBr on the micellar surface charge density and sphere-to-rod geometry change. The NaBr concentration required to induce the latter change increases rapidly as a function of decreasing the length of R: no geometry change was detected for C(10)Me(3)ABr. Values of N(agg) increase as I function of increasing the length of R and are in good agreement with both literature values and values that were calculated theoretically. Thus, MV is a convenient and simple technique for obtaining fundamental properties of surfactant solutions, including additive-induced changes of micellar parameters (N(agg)) and morphology changes.

Ionic liquids, ILs, carrying long-chain alkyl groups are surface active, SAIIs. We investigated the micellar properties of the SAIL 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, C(16)MeImCl, and compared the data with 1-hexadecylpyridinium chloride, C(16)PYCl, and benzyl (3-hexadecanoylaminoethyl)dimethylammonium chloride, C(15)AEtBzMe(2)Cl. The properties compared include critical micelle concentration, cmc; thermodynamic parameters of micellization; empirical polarity and water concentrations in the interfacial regions. In the temperature range from 15 to 75 degrees C, the order of cmc in H(2)O and in D(2)O is C(16)PYCl > C(16)MeImCl > C(15)AEtBzMe(2)Cl. The enthalpies of micellization, Delta H(mic)(degrees), were calculated indirectly from by use of the van`t Hoff treatment; directly by isothermal titration calorimetry, ITC. Calculation of the degree of counter-ion dissociation, alpha(mic), from conductivity measurements, by use of Evans equation requires knowledge of the aggregation numbers, N(agg), at different temperatures. We have introduced a reliable method for carrying out this calculation, based on the volume and length of the monomer, and the dependence of N(agg) on temperature. The N(agg) calculated for C(16)PyCl and C(16)MeImCl were corroborated by light scattering measurements. Conductivity- and ITC-based Delta H(mic)(degrees) do not agree; reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Micelle formation is entropy driven: at all studied temperatures for C(16)MeImCl; only up to 65 degrees C for C(16)PyCl; and up to 55 degrees C for C(15)AEtBzMe(2)Cl. All these data can be rationalized by considering hydrogen-bonding between the head-ions of the monomers in the micellar aggregate. The empirical polarities and concentrations of interfacial water were found to be independent of the nature of the head-group. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We used dynamic light scattering (DLS), a steady-state fluorescence, time resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ), tensiometry, conductimetry, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) to investigate the self-assembly of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium sulfate (CTAS) in aqueous solution, which has SO42- as divalent counterion. We obtained the critical micelled concentration (cmc), aggregation number (N-agg), area per monomer (a(0)), hydrodynamic radius (R-H), and degree of counterion dissociation (alpha) of CTAS micelles in the absence and presence of up to 1 M Na2SO4 and at temperatures of 25 and 40 degrees C. Between 0.01 and 0.3 M salt the hydrodynamic radius of CTAS micelle R-H approximate to 16 angstrom is roughly independent on Na2SO4 concentration; below and above this concentration range R-H increases steeply with the salt concentration, indicating micelle structure transition, from spherical to rod-like structures. R-H increases only slightly as temperature increases from 25 to 40 degrees C, and the cmc decreases initially very steeply with Na2SO4 concentration up to about 10 mM, and thereafter it is constant. The area per surfactant at the water/air interface, a(0), initially increases steeply with Na2SO4 concentration, and then decrases above ca. 10 mM. Conductimetry gives alpha = 0.18 for the degree of counterion dissociation, and N-agg obtained by fluorescence methods increases with surfactant concentration but it is roughly independent of up to 80 mM salt. The ITC data yield cmc of 0.22 mM in water, and the calculated enthalpy change of micelle formation, Delta H-mic = 3.8 kJ mol(-1), Gibbs free energy of micellization of surfactant molecules, Delta G(mic) = -38.0 kJ mol(-1) and entropy T Delta S-mic = 41.7 kJ mol(-1) indicate that the formation of CTAS micelles is entropy-driven. Dynamic light scattering has been used to investigate ternary aqueous solutions of n-dodecyl octaoxyethylene glycol monoetber (C12E8) with high molar mass poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The measurements were made at 20 °C, always below the cloud point temperature (Tc) of the mixed solutions. The relaxation time distributions are bimodal at higher PEO and surfactant concentrations, owing to the preacute of free surfactant micelles, which coexist with the slower component, representing the polymer coil/micellar cluster comptex. As the surfactant concentration is increased, the apparent hydrodynamic radius (RH) of the coil becomes progressively larger. It is suggested that the complex structure consists of clusters of micelles sited within the polymer coil, as previously concluded for the PEO-C12E8-water system. However. C12E8 interacts less strongly than C12E8 with PEO; at low concentrations of surfactant the complex does not contribute significantly to the total scattered intensity. The perturbation of the PEO coil radius with C12E8 is also smaller than that in the C12E8 system. The addition of PEO strongly decreases the clouding temperature of the system, as previously observed for C12E8/PEO mixtures in solution Addition of PEO up to 0.2% to C12E8 (10 wt %) solutions doss not alter the aggregation number (Nagg) of the micelles probably because the surfactant monomers are equally partitioned as bound and unbound micelles. The critical micelle concentration (cmc), obtained from the I1/I3 ratio (a measure of the dependence of the vibronic band intensities on the pyrene probe environment), does not change when PEO is added, suggesting that for neutral polymer/surfactant systems the trends in Nagg and the cmc do not unambiguously reflect the strength of interaction.

The work described herein is aimed at understanding primary and secondary aggregation of bile salt micelles and how micelles can perform chiral recognition of binapthyl analytes. Previous work with cholate and deoxycholate using micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has provided insightinto cholate and deoxycholate micelle formation, especially with respect to the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Chiral separations of the model analyte, 1,1â??-binaphthyl-2,2â??-diyl hydrogen phosphate (BNDHP), via cholate (C) and deoxycholate (DC) mediated MEKC separataions previously have shown the DC CMC to be 7-10 mM andthe cholate CMC at 14 mM at ph 12. A second model analyte,1,1â??-binaphthol (BN), was also previously investigated to probe micellar structure, but the MEKC data for this analyte implied a higher CMC, which may be interpreted as secondary aggregation. Thiswork extends the investigation of bile salts to include pulsed field gradient spin echo (PFGSE) NMR experiments being used to gain information about the size and degree of polydispersity of cholate and deoxycholate micelles. Concentrations of cholate below 10mM show a large variation in effective radius likely due to the existence of transient preliminary aggregates. The onset of the primary micelle shows a dramatic increase in effective radius of the micelle in cholate and deoxycholate. In the region of expectedsecondary aggregation a gradual increase of effective radius was observed with cholate; deoxycholate showed a persistent aggregate size in the secondary micelle region that is modulated by the presence of an analyte molecule. Effective radii of cholate anddeoxycholate (individually) were compared with and without R- and S-BNDHP in order to observe the effective radius difference of micelles with and without analyte present. The presence of S-BNDHP consistently resulted in a larger effective aggregate radius incholate and deoxycholate, confirming previous data of the S-BNDHP interacting more with the micelle than R-BNDHP. In total, various NMR techniques, like diffusion NMR can be used to gain a greater understanding of the bile salt micellization process and chiral resolution.

Certain fatty acid N-alkyl amides from the medicinal plant Echinacea activate cannabinoid type-2 (CB2) receptors. In this study we show that the CB2-binding Echinacea constituents dodeca-2E,4E-dienoic acid isobutylamide (1) and dodeca-2E,4E,8Z,10Z-tetraenoic acid isobutylamide (2) form micelles in aqueous medium. In contrast, micelle formation is not observed for undeca-2E-ene-8,10-diynoic acid isobutylamide (3), which does not bind to CB2, or structurally related endogenous cannabinoids, such as arachidonoyl ethanolamine (anandamide). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) range of 1 and 2 was determined by fluorescence spectroscopy as 200-300 and 7400-10000 nM, respectively. The size of premicelle aggregates, micelles, and supermicelles was studied by dynamic light scattering. Microscopy images show that compound 1, but not 2, forms globular and rod-like supermicelles with radii of approximately 75 nm. The self-assembling N-alkyl amides partition between themselves and the CB2 receptor, and aggregation of N-alkyl amides thus determines their in vitro pharmacological effects. Molecular mechanics by Monte Carlo simulations of the aggregation process support the experimental data, suggesting that both 1 and 2 can readily aggregate into premicelles, but only 1 spontaneously assembles into larger aggregates. These findings have important implications for biological studies with this class of compounds.

Recently it has been shown that modification with strontium causes an increase in the size of eutectic grains. The eutectic grain size increases because there are fewer nucleation events, possibly due to the poisoning of phosphorus-based nuclei that are active in the unmodified alloy. The current paper investigates the effect of strontium concentration on the eutectic grain size. In the aluminium-10 wt.% silicon alloy used in this research, for fixed casting conditions, the eutectic grain size increases as the strontium concentration increases up to approximately 150ppm, beyond which the grain size is relatively stable. This critical strontium concentration is likely to differ depending on the composition of the base alloy, including the concentration of minor elements and impurities. It is concluded that processing and in-service properties of strontium modified aluminium-silicon castings are likely to be more stable if a minimum critical strontium concentration is exceeded. If operating below this critical strontium concentration exceptional control over composition and casting conditions is required. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The interactions between proteins and gold colloids functionalized with protein-resistant oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) thiol, HS(CH(2))(11) (OCH(2)CH(2))(6)OMe (EG(6)OMe), in aqueous solution have been studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The mean size, 2R, and the size distribution of the decorated gold colloids have been characterized by SAXS. The monolayer-protected gold colloids have no correlations due to the low volume fraction in solution and are stable in a wide range of temperatures (5-70 degrees C, pH (1.3-12.4), and ionic strength (0-1.0 M). In contrast, protein (bovine serum albumin) solutions with concentrations in the range of 60-200 mg/mL (4.6-14.5 vol show a pronounced correlation peak in SAXS, which results from the repulsive electrostatic interaction between charged proteins. These protein interactions show significant dependence on ionic strength, as would be expected for an electrostatic interaction (Zhang et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2007, 111, 251). For a mixture of proteins and gold colloids, the protein-protein interaction changes little upon mixing with OEG-decorated gold colloids. In contrast, the colloid-colloid interaction is found to be strongly dependent on the protein concentration and the size of the colloid itself. Adding protein to a colloidal solution results in an attractive depletion interaction between functionalized gold colloids, and above a critical protein concentration, c*, the colloids form aggregates and flocculate. Adding salt to such mixtures enhances the depletion effect and decreases the critical protein concentration. The aggregation is a reversible process (i.e., diluting the solution leads to dissolution of aggregates). The results also indicate that the charge of the OEG self-assembled monolayer at a curved interface has a rather limited effect on the colloidal stabilization and the repulsive interaction with proteins.

Gelation of UHT milk during storage (age gelation) is a major factor limiting its shelf-life. The gel which forms is a three-dimensional protein matrix initiated by interactions between the whey protein beta -lactoglobulin and the kappa -casein of the casein micelle during the high heat treatment. These interactions lead to the formation of a beta -lactoglobulin-kappa -casein complex (beta kappa -complex). A feasible mechanism of age gelation is based on a two-step process; in the first step, the beta kappa -complexes dissociate from the casein micelles due to the breakdown of multiple anchor sites on kappa -casein, and in the second step, these complexes aggregate into a three-dimensional matrix. When a critical volume concentration of the beta kappa -complex is attained, a gel of custard-like consistency is formed. Significant factors which influence the onset of gelation include the nature of the heat treatment, proteolysis during storage, milk composition and quality, seasonal milk production factors and storage temperature. In this review, age gelation is discussed in terms of these factors, causative mechanisms and procedures for controlling it.

Lipopeptides produced by Bacillus subtilis are known for their high antifungal activity. The aim of this paper is to show that at high concentration they can damage the surface ultra-structure of bacterial cells. A lipopeptide extract containing iturin and surfactin (5 mg mL-1) was prepared after isolation from B. subtilis (strain OG) by solid phase extraction. Analysis by atomic force microscope (AFM) showed that upon evaporation, lipopeptides form large aggregates (0.1-0.2 mu m2) on the substrates silicon and mica. When the same solution is incubated with fungi and bacteria and the system is allowed to evaporate, dramatic changes are observed on the cells. AFM micrographs show disintegration of the hyphae of Phomopsis phaseoli and the cell walls of Xanthomonas campestris and X. axonopodis. Collapses to fungal and bacterial cells may be a result of formation of pores triggered by micelles and lamellar structures, which are formed above the critical micelar concentration of lipopeptides. As observed for P. phaseoli, the process involves binding, solubilization, and formation of novel structures in which cell wall components are solubilized within lipopeptide vesicles. This is the first report presenting evidences that vesicles of uncharged and negatively charged lipopeptides can alter the morphology of gram-negative bacteria.

10-(Octyloxy) decyl-2-(trimethylammonium) ethyl phosphate (ODPC) is an alkylphospholipid that can interact with cell membranes because of its amphiphilic character. We describe here the interaction of ODPC with liposomes and its toxicity to leukemic cells with an ED-50 of 5.4, 5.6 and 2.9 pM for 72 h of treatment for inhibition of proliferation of NB4, U937 and K562 cell lines, respectively, and lack of toxicity to normal hematopoietic progenitor cells at concentrations up to 25 pM. The ED-50 for the non-malignant HEK-293 and primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) was 63.4 and 60.7 mu M, respectively. The critical micellar concentration (CMC) of ODPC was 200 mu M. Dynamic light scattering indicated that dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposome size was affected only above the CMC of ODPC. Differential calorimetric scanning (DCS) of liposomes indicated a critical transition temperature (T(c)) of 41.5 degrees C and an enthalpy (Delta H) variation of 7.3 kcal mol(-1). The presence of 25 mu M ODPC decreased T(c) and Delta H to 393 degrees C and 4.7 kcal mol(-1), respectively. ODPC at 250 mu M destabilized the liposomes (36.3 degrees C. 0.46 kcal mol(-1)). Kinetics of 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (CF) leakage from different liposome systems indicated that the rate and extent of CF release depended on liposome composition and ODPC concentration and that above the CMC it was instantaneous. Overall, the data indicate that ODPC acts on in vitro membrane systems and leukemia cell lines at concentrations below its CMC, suggesting that it does not act as a detergent and that this effect is dependent on membrane composition. The presence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi in long-term cane-growing fields associated with yield decline led to the supposition that VAM fungi may be responsible for the poor yields. A glasshouse trial was established to test the effectiveness of a species of VAM fungi, Glomus clarum, extracted from one of these North Queensland fields on the growth of sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrid), maize (Zea mays), and soybean (Glycine max) for 6 phosphorus (P) rates (0, 2.7, 8.2, 25, 74, 222 mg/kg). For maize and soybean plants that received VAM (+ VAM), root colonisation was associated with enhanced P uptake, improved dry weight (DW) production, and higher index tissue-P concentrations than those without VAM (-VAM). By comparing DW responses of maize and soybean for different P rates, savings in fertiliser P of up to 160 and 213 kg/ha, respectively, were realised. Sugarcane plants were generally less responsive. Apart from a 30% DW increase with VAM when 2.7 mg P/kg was added, DW of +VAM plants was equivalent to, or worse than in the case of 222 mg P/kg, DW of -VAM plants. For all 3 host species, colonisation was least at the highest P application, presumably from excessive P within the plant tissue. Critical P concentrations for the 3 host species were below those reported elsewhere, and for soybean and sugarcane, the critical concentration for +VAM plants was lower than that of -VAM plants. There are 3 implications that arise from this study. First, VAM fungi present in cane-growing soils can promote the growth of maize and soybean, which are potential rotation crops, over a range of P levels. Second, the mycorrhizal strain taken from this site did not generally contribute to a yield decline in sugarcane plants. Third, application of P fertiliser is not necessary for sugarcane when acid-extractable P is
