Through the polymeric precursor method were synthesized samples Ca0.98Sr0.01X0.01TiO3 (X= Eu3+, Sm3+ and Pr3+), which under different heat treatments were obtained with levels of distinct structural order-disorder. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, confirming the obtaining of ahomogeneous material with perovskite-type orthorhombic structure. This characterization allowed evaluating the average crystallite size of the samples that varies depending on the rare-earth ion. The results of photoluminescence emission confirmed the presence of this optical phenomenon at room temperature and its relationship to the level of order-disorder structural system. The photoluminescence emission is more intense in samples annealed at 500 ° C (independent on the dopant ion), the variation of the dopant influence on the emission intensity due to charge transfer between the host and emitting rare-earth ion, where the doped with Pr3+ ion has charge transfer more efficient and hence more intense emission in the photoluminescence. Another factor that favors the optical property of the samples is the charge compensation, as it contributes to the increase in structural disorder due to formation of Ca2+ vacancies.

The Pb1-xLaxTiO3 sintered ferroelectric ceramics with x equal to 0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.30 were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The binding energy of the Ti 2p lines is consistent with only one chemical state, Ti4+. on the other hand, in the case of Pb 4f and 0 Is XPS spectra, apart from the main peaks attributed to the lattice ions, minor peaks related to the surface states were also observed. The presence of Pb-0 state on the surface of all samples was due to the reduction of lead ions caused by the preferential removal of the oxygen ions after sputtering. The non observation of Ti3+ ions confirms that the mechanism of charge compensation that should occurs owing to the substitution of Ph2+ by La3+ is due to the preferential formation of Pb site vacancies, and not to a reduction from Ti4+ to Ti3+ states. Within the limits of the present experiment, there is no evidence of the existence of non-equivalent Pb, Ti, and La sites as the Pb1-xLaxTiO3 ceramic changes from a normal to a relaxor ferroelectric state. In this work, the persistent luminescence mechanisms of Tb3+ (in CdSiO3) and Eu2+ (in BaAl2O4) based on solid experimental data are compared. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows the different nature of the inter- and intraconfigurational transitions for Eu2+ and Tb3+, respectively. The electron is the charge carrier in both mechanisms, implying the presence of electron acceptor defects. The preliminary structural analysis shows a free space in CdSiO3 able to accommodate interstitial oxide ions needed by charge compensation during the initial preparation. The subsequent annealing removes this oxide leaving behind an electron trap. Despite the low band gap energy for CdSiO3, determined with synchrotron radiation UV-VUV excitation spectroscopy of Tb3+, the persistent luminescence from Tb3+ is observed only with UV irradiation. The need of high excitation energy is due to the position of F-7(6) level deep below the bottom of the conduction band, as determined with the 4f(8)-> 4f(7)5d(1) and the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions. Finally, the persistent luminescence mechanisms are constructed and, despite the differences, the mechanisms for Tb3+ and Eu2+ proved to be rather similar. This similarity confirms the solidity of the interpretation of experimental data for the Eu2+ doped persistent luminescence materials and encourages the use of similar models for other persistent luminescence materials. The Li-rich layered transition metal oxides (LLOs) Li2MnO3-LiMO2 (M=Mn, Co, Ni, etc.) have drawn considerable attention as cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. They generate large reversible capacities but the fundamental reaction mechanism and structural perturbations during cycling remain controversial. In the present thesis, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were performed on Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O2 at different stage of charge during electrochemical oxidation/reduction. K-edge spectra of Co, Mn and Ni were recorded through a voltage range of 3.7-4.8V vs. Li/Li+, which consist of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Oxidation states during initial charge were discussed based on values from literature as well as XANES analysis. Information about bond distance, coordination number as well as corresponding Debye-Waller factor were extracted from Gnxas analysis of raw data in the EXAFS region. The possibility of oxygen participation in the initial charge was discussed. Co and Ni prove to take part in the oxidation/reduction process while Mn remain in the tetravalent state. The cathode material appears to retain good structural short-range order during charge-discharge. A resemblance of the pristine sample and sample 4 was discovered which was firstly reported for similar compounds.

Cytochrome c oxidase is a membrane-bound enzyme that catalyzes the four-electron reduction of oxygen to water. This highly exergonic reaction drives proton pumping across the membrane. One of the key questions associated with the function of cytochrome c oxidase is how the transfer of electrons and protons is coupled and how proton transfer is controlled by the enzyme. In this study we focus on the function of one of the proton transfer pathways of the R. sphaeroides enzyme, the so-called K-proton transfer pathway (containing a highly conserved Lys(I-362) residue), leading from the protein surface to the catalytic site. We have investigated the kinetics of the reaction of the reduced enzyme with oxygen in mutants of the enzyme in which a residue [Ser(I-299)] near the entry point of the pathway was modified with the use of site-directed mutagenesis. The results show that during the initial steps of oxygen reduction, electron transfer to the catalytic site (to form the “peroxy” state, Pr) requires charge compensation through the proton pathway, but no proton uptake from the bulk solution. The charge compensation is proposed to involve a movement of the K(I-362) side chain toward the binuclear center. Thus, in contrast to what has been assumed previously, the results indicate that the K-pathway is used during oxygen reduction and that K(I-362) is charged at pH ≈ 7.5. The movement of the Lys is proposed to regulate proton transfer by “shutting off” the protonic connectivity through the K-pathway after initiation of the O2 reduction chemistry. This “shutoff” prevents a short-circuit of the proton-pumping machinery of the enzyme during the subsequent reaction steps.

Experimental results on a loop heat pipe, using R134a as the working fluid, indicates that the liquid inventory in the compensation chamber can significantly influence the operating characteristics. The large liquid inventory in the compensation chamber, under terrestrial conditions, can result in loss of thermal coupling between the compensation chamber and the evaporator core. This causes the operating temperature to increase monotonically. This phenomenon, which has been experimentally observed, is reported in this paper. A theoretical model to predict the steady-state performance of a loop heat pipe with a weak thermal link between the compensation chamber and the core, as observed in the experiment, is also presented. The predicted and the experimentally determined temperatures correlate well.

Nanocrystals of KMgF3 single-doped and codoped with Ce3+ or/and Yb3+ were synthesized separately by the microemulsion method. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns were indexed to show that the KMgF, crystal system was unchanged. The fluorescent spectra of KMgF3:Ce, Yb polycrystal powders were studied and compared with those of the Ce, Yb doped KMgF3 crystals produced using the high-temperature solid phase method. The diffuse reflection spectra and infrared. emission of KMgF3:Ce, Yb were investigated. From the results, the authors could confirm that there were charge transfer processes from Ce3+ to Yb3+ in both KMgF3: Ce,Yb nanocrystals and polycrystal powders.

This paper presents possible selective current compensation strategies based on the Conservative Power Theory (CPT). This recently proposed theory, introduces the concept of complex power conservation under non-sinusoidal conditions. Moreover, the related current decompositions results in several current terms, which are associated with a specific physical phenomena (power absorption P, energy storage Q, voltage and current distortion D). Such current components are used in this work for the definition of different current compensators, which can be selective in terms of minimizing particular disturbing effects. The choice of one or other current component for compensation directly affects the sizing and cost of active and/or passive devices and it will be demonstrated that it can be done to attend predefined limits for harmonic distortion, unbalances and/or power factor. Single and three-phase compensation strategies will be discussed by means of the CPT Framework. Simulation and experimental results will be demonstrated in order to validate their performance. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents an efficient low-complexity clipping noise compensation scheme for PAR reduced orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Conventional clipping noise compensation schemes proposed for OFDM systems are decision directed schemes which use demodulated data symbols. Thus these schemes fail to deliver expected performance in OFDMA systems where multiple users share a single OFDM symbol and a specific user may only know his/her own modulation scheme. The proposed clipping noise estimation and compensation scheme does not require the knowledge of the demodulated symbols of the other users, making it very promising for OFDMA systems. It uses the equalized output and the reserved tones to reconstruct the signal by compensating the clipping noise. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the system performance.

We propose an efficient and low-complexity scheme for estimating and compensating clipping noise in OFDMA systems. Conventional clipping noise estimation schemes, which need all demodulated data symbols, may become infeasible in OFDMA systems where a specific user may only know his own modulation scheme. The proposed scheme first uses equalized output to identify a limited number of candidate clips, and then exploits the information on known subcarriers to reconstruct clipped signal. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the system performance.
