This study was designed to evaluate the effect of nutritional supplementation offered during the pre- and postpartum periods on serum cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipids of Canchim beef cows and their relationship with folliculogenesis. Thirty cows with predicted calving date between September and October, kept in pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu together with their calves, were randomly distributed into three experimental groups: the first received only a mineral mixture (Control Group, CG); the second group received a concentrate with 16% crude protein/kg dry matter (DM) and 3000 kcal digestible energy/kg DM offered for 45 days prepartum and 120 days postpartum (PREG); the third group received the concentrate from parturition until the 120th day postpartum (POSG). Consumption was estimated at 1% of body weight, and each cow received approximately 4.0 kg/day (fresh weight) of supplement. Blood samples were taken and an ultrasound examination of the ovaries was performed twice a week until the 60th day postpartum. The body condition score (BCS) and the weight of the cows were recorded at 15-day intervals from calving until the 60th day postpartum. Data are presented as mean +/- SEM. Mean weight and BCS at calving were, respectively, 448 +/- 54.9 kg and 6.2 +/- 0.25 (PREG); 432 +/- 71.1 kg and 5.5 +/- 0.69 (POSG); and 434 +/- 66.4 kg and 5.5 +/- 0.69 (CG). Total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TRIG) and total lipids (TLIP) were measured using colorimetry until the 60th day postpartum. TC averages were PREG 186 +/- 62.6 mg/dL, POSG 159 +/- 43.1 mg/dL and CG 133 +/- 35.1 mg/dL (P < 0.05). For TRIG, the means were PREG 29 +/- 11.3 mg/dL (P < 0.05), POSG 24 +/- 8.1 mg/dL and CG 26 +/- 12.1 mg/dL (P > 0.05). Serum concentrations of TLIP were PREG 588 +/- 145.6 mg/dL, POSG 512 +/- 137.6 mg/dL and CG 452 +/- 122.4 mg/dL (P < 0.05). The first dominant follicle (DF) was identified on Day 21 +/- 10.3 (PREG), 36 +/- 28.5 (POSG) and 51 +/- 32.8 (CG) after calving. The difference between PREG and CG was significant (P < 0.05). TC was positively correlated with the calving to first estrus interval (P < 0.05). Results showed that nutritional supplementation before parturition assured good body condition at calving and suggested that it was effective at increasing cholesterol availability to maintain ovarian follicle function and to favor earlier resumption of ovarian activity. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the course of maternal blood glucose levels in pregnant rats and its repercussions on the glucose levels and pancreas of their newborn pups. Diabetes was induced by alloxan (42 mg/kg body weight) and streptozotocin (40 mg/kg). Sixty-two pregnant Wistar rats weighing 180 to 250 g were divided into a control group and two groups with moderate (120 to 200 mg/dl glucose) and severe diabetes (greater than 200 mg/dl glucose), respectively. Blood glucose levels were measured in the dams on the 1st, 14th, and 21st days of pregnancy and in the pups at birth. The results were pooled for each litter. The fetal pancreases were removed after cesarian section performed on the 21st day of pregnancy, pooled for each litter and processed for histopathologic examination by light microscopy. Maternal blood glucose levels were significantly increased compared with the first day of pregnancy in both normal and diabetic rats starting on the 14th day of pregnancy. Fetal blood glucose levels correlated with maternal levels. The histopathologic changes characterized by vacuolization and basophilia of the cytoplasm of endocrine pancreas of newborn pups from darns with moderate or severe diabetes suggested pancreatic hyperactivity.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the blood serum components and histopathological findings of commercial layers experimentally infected with Salmonella Gallinarum (SG), the microorganism responsible for the fowl typhoid. 180 commercial layers were distributed into three groups (G): G1 and G2 received 0.2mL of inoculum containing 3.3x10 8 and 3.3x10 5 CFU of resistant SG to the nalidix acid (Nal r)/mL, respectively, directly into their crops; G3 did not receive the inoculum (control group). The birds were inoculated when they were 5 days old and the euthanasia was performed 24 hours before and after infection and 3, 5, 7 and 10 days after the administration of the inoculum. In each day of collection, blood samples were obtained for biochemical tests of the blood serum besides macroscopic and histopathological examination of the birds. Data were submitted to analysis of variance by the SAS statistical program and the means were compared by Tukeýs test (P<0,05). In the serum biochemical profile it was observed that the infection interfered in the values of total protein, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol, triglycerides, GGT and ALT in the infected groups. The macroscopic examination showed hepatomegaly, alteration of the hepatic color and hemorrhagic spots in the kidneys of animals from G1. The histopathology showed degeneration of hepatocytes in G1 and G2 although other lesions like multifocal hepatic necrosis and inflammatory infiltrate on the liver and kidneys were restricted to G1. The alterations were more evident on G1 which received a higher concentration of bacteria/mL when compared to G2. The results showed that the correlation between biochemical alterations and macroscopic and histopathological lesions can assist the comprehension of the pathophysiology of fowl typhoid, supplying important information for the diagnosis and prognosis of this disease.

Background: Doppler ultrasound (DUS) examination provides quantitative and qualitative information concerning the blood flow in veins and arteries, enabling their morphological evaluation and the collection of hemodynamic data. Dogs and cats as well as humans may display neurological signs of brain hypoperfusion secondary to common carotid alterations. Hence, DUS examination might aid in the differential diagnosis of neurological disorders of ischemic origin, among other causes. The objective of this study was to register normal values for systolic peak velocity, minimum diastolic velocity, diameter and resistance index of both common carotid arteries of 12 healthy Labrador retriever dogs between 2 and 5 years of age. By gathering these values, we might be able to improve the sensitivity of hemodynamic studies in clinically important brain disorders. Results: There were no statistical differences between the values for the right and left vessels: the systolic peak velocity was 75.8 ± 16 cm/s, minimum diastolic velocity was 12.2 ± 4 cm/s, common carotid diameter was 0.545 ± 0.063 cm, and resistance index was 0.83 ± 0.07. Conclusions: The results of this study might be used to establish normal parameters for Labrador retriever dogs and thus help in the diagnosis of neurological disorders associated with alterations of the carotid arteries. Similar studies must be performed to evaluate the same parameters in other dog breeds of different sizes and skull conformations.

Blood aspiration is a significant forensic finding. In this study, we examined the value of postmortem computed tomography (CT) imaging in evaluating findings of blood aspiration. We selected 37 cases with autopsy evidence of blood in the lungs and/or in the airways previously submitted to total-body CT scanning. The CT-images were retrospectively analyzed. In one case with pulmonary blood aspiration, biopsy specimens were obtained under CT guide for histological examination. In six cases, CT detected pulmonary abnormalities suggestive of blood aspiration, not mentioned in the autopsy reports. CT reconstructions provided additional data about the distribution and extent of aspiration. In one needle-biopsied case, the pulmonary specimens showed blood in the alveoli. We suggest the use of CT imaging as a tool complementary to traditional techniques in cases of blood aspiration to avoid misdiagnosis, to guide the investigation of lung tissue, and to allow for more evidence-based inferences on the cause of death.

Despite the increased use of intracranial neuromonitoring during experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), coordinates for probe placement in rabbits are lacking. This study evaluates the safety and reliability of using outer skull landmarks to identify locations for placement of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and intraparenchymal intracranial pressure (ICP) probes. Experimental SAH was performed in 17 rabbits using an extracranial-intracranial shunt model. ICP probes were placed in the frontal lobe and compared to measurements recorded from the olfactory bulb. CBF probes were placed in various locations in the frontal cortex anterior to the coronary suture. Insertion depth, relation to the ventricular system, and ideal placement location were determined by post-mortem examination. ICP recordings at the time of SAH from the frontal lobe did not differ significantly from those obtained from the right olfactory bulb. Ideal coordinates for intraparenchymal CBF probes in the left and right frontal lobe were found to be located 4.6±0.9 and 4.5±1.2 anterior to the bregma, 4.7±0.7mm and 4.7±0.5mm parasagittal, and at depths of 4±0.5mm and 3.9±0.5mm, respectively. The results demonstrate that the presented coordinates based on skull landmarks allow reliable placement of intraparenchymal ICP and CBF probes in rabbit brains without the use of a stereotactic frame.

The examination of urine in children can be very complex, due to the difficulty to obtain clean urine specimens in infants and toddlers. Clean catch is an easy system to obtain urine but patience is needed. Transurethral catheterization or suprapubic aspiration is useful in infants and toddlers with sign of pyelonephritis. Urine bag specimens are not useful in the diagnosis of urinary tract infection because of the high rate of false positive cultures. The 24 hours urine collection is frequently replaced by a spot urine and the ratio of the measured substances with the urine creatinine are calculated. Urine microscopy is needed for the evaluation of pathological results in the dipstick testing: confirm that red urine is due to haematuria by demonstration of red blood cells on urine microscopy, dysmorphic cells and red-cell casts are pathognomonic of glomerular bleeding, white-cell casts signify glomerular inflammation and bacteria are easily seen in unstained urine. A urine culture is pathologic if the colony count exceeds 10(4) in the transurethral catheterization or clean void. In the suprapubic aspiration is any number of colony pathologic. Urate crystals in the urine of infants may cause a pink discoloration to nappies. Urine screenings are not very useful and should be performed only at the age of 5 years or by sexual-active adolescents.

BACKGROUND: In view of the obvious practical advantages, the most common test for hematuria is currently a reagent strip. METHODS: A standardized microscopic examination of the sediment was performed in 20 asymptomatic children referred for evaluation of chronic isolated microhematuria detected by means of a reagent strip. RESULTS: In 6 of the 20 children the microscopic examination failed to confirm the result of the dipstick test. CONCLUSIONS: Confirmation for the presence of hematuria by microscopy is the most important step in children with a positive dipstick for urinary blood.
Endothelin inhibition improves cerebral blood flow and is neuroprotective in pneumococcal meningitis

By using an infant rat model of pneumococcal meningitis, we determined whether endothelins contribute to neuronal damage in this disease. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis demonstrated a significant increase of endothelin-1 in infected animals compared with uninfected controls. Histopathological examination 24 hours after infection showed brain damage in animals treated with ceftriaxone alone (median, 9.2% of cortex; range, 0-49.1%). In infected animals treated intraperitoneally with the endothelin antagonist bosentan (30 mg/kg, every 12 hours) also, injury was reduced to 0.5% (range, 0-8.6%) of cortex. Cerebral blood flow was reduced in infected animals (6.5 +/- 4.0 ml/min/100 g of brain vs 14.9 +/- 9.1 ml/min/100 g in controls. Treatment with bosentan restored cerebral blood flow to levels similar to controls (12.8 +/- 5.3 ml/min/100 g). Improved blood flow was not mediated by nitric oxide production, because bosentan had no effect on cerebrospinal fluid or plasma nitrite/nitrate concentrations at 6, 12, or 18 hours. These data indicate that endothelins contribute to neuronal injury in this model of pneumococcal meningitis by causing cerebral ischemia.

Objective-To evaluate pulsed-wave Doppler spectral parameters as a method for distinguishing between neoplastic and inflammatory peripheral lymphadenopathy in dogs. Sample Population-40 superficial lymph nodes from 33 dogs with peripheral lymphadenopathy. Procedures-3 Doppler spectral tracings were recorded from each node. Spectral Doppler analysis including assessment of the resistive index, peak systolic velocity-to-end diastolic velocity (S:D) ratio, diastolic notch velocity-to-peak systolic velocity (N:S) ratio, and end diastolic velocity-to-diastolic notch velocity ratio was performed for each tracing. Several calculation methods were used to determine the Doppler indices for each lymph node. After the ultrasonographic examination, fine needle aspirates or excisional biopsy specimens of the examined lymph nodes were obtained, and lymphadenopathy was classified as either inflammatory or neoplastic (lymphomatous or metastatic) via cytologic or histologic examination. Results of Doppler analysis were compared with cytologic or histopathologic findings. Results-The Doppler index with the highest diagnostic accuracy was the S:D ratio calculated from the first recorded tracing; a cutoff value of 3.22 yielded sensitivity of 91%, specificity of 100%, and negative predictive value of 89% for detection of neoplasia. Overall diagnostic accuracy was 95%. At a sensitivity of 100%, the most accurate index was the N:S ratio calculated from the first recorded tracing; a cutoff value of 0.45 yielded specificity of 67%, positive predictive value of 81%, and overall diagnostic accuracy of 86.5%. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Results suggested that noninvasive Doppler spectral analysis may be useful in the diagnosis of neoplastic versus inflammatory peripheral lymphadenopathy in dogs.

PURPOSE: To analyze how far an ischemic component might have been involved in optic neuritis. METHODS: Case report: a 32-year-old man with symptoms characteristic for optic neuritis underwent extensive clinical, laboratory/serological and vascular examination for systemic associations and vascular involvement. RESULTS: The patient was found to have a temporary ocular blood flow dysregulation and increased plasma endothelin-1 levels which decreased after the acute phase of the optic nerve. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that there might be an ischemic component in this patient with optic neuritis and hypothesize that this ischemic component is at least in part due to a temporarily increased endothelin-1 level.
