According to a recent report by the European Commission, within the European Union, the construction and demolition wastes come to at least 450 million tons per year. Roughly 75% of the waste is disposed to landfill, despite its major recycling potential. The bulk constituents of demolition debris are concrete (50-55%) and masonry (30-40%) with only small percentages of other materials such as metals, glass and timber. In Cyprus, at present, recycling of waste materials is practically inexistent and almost the entire demolition waste products are disposed in landfill sites, with all possible economic, technical and environmental impacts. This research paper presents the evaluation and the effective reuse of waste construction materials, such as recycled lime powder (RLP) and recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), disposed to landfill sites in Cyprus, due to the lack of a lucid recycling policy and knowledge. Results show that both RLP and RCA have the potential to produce good quality and robust concrete mixtures both in terms of mechanical and durability performance. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Self-assembly of binary blends of two triblock copolymers of poly(4-vinyl pyridine)-b-polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine), i.e., P4VP(43)-b-PS260-b-P4VP(43) (P1) and P4VP(43)-b-PS366-b-P4VP(43) (P2), in dioxane/water solution was studied. These two triblock copolymers individually tend to form vesicles (P2) and cylindrical micelles (P1) in dilute solution. It was found that copolymer components in the blend, sample preparation method, and annealing time had significant effect on hybridization aggregate morphology. By increasing P1 content in the copolymer blends, fraction of looped and stretched cylinders increased, while fraction of bilayers decreased. Nearly no bilayer was observed when P1 content was above 85 wt%.

This paper describes the formation of fibril like aggregates from the self-assembly of block copolymer mixture (polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) and polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA)) via interpolymer hydrogen bonding in nonselective solvent. The hydrogen bonding between P4VP and PAA in chloroform leads to the formation of complex. When all the pyridine units in P4VP were all hydrogen bonded to acrylic acid in PAA, the formed complex is insoluble, resulting in the formation of spherical micellar aggregates and nanorods.

Low crystalline order has been proved to be one of the main hindrances for achieving high performance devices based on thin films composed of crystallizable polymer. In this work, we use a facile method to substantially improve crystallinity of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in its pure or composite film via the construction of ordered precursors in the solution used for thin film deposition. These improvements have been confirmed by bright-field transmission electron micrography, electron diffraction, UV-Vis absorption and wide-angle X-ray diffraction.

We propose a simple but efficient, rapid, and quantitative ion-responsive micelle system based on counter-anion exchange of a surfactant with an imidazolium unit. The ion-exchange reaction results in the amphiphilic-to-hydrophobic transition of the imidazolium salt, leading to the destruction of the micelles, which has been successfully applied to control led release and emulsification.

A controllable silver nanoparticle aggregate system has been synthesized by adding different amounts of ethanol to cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) capped silver nanoparticles (Ag-nps), which could be used as highly efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates. This ethanol-induced aggregation can be attributed to preferential dissolution of CTAB into ethanol, which leads a partial removal of the protective CTAB layer on Ag-nps. The optical and morphological properties of these aggregates under various volumes of ethanol were explored via UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Based on electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL), a novel method for fabrication of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) biosensor by self-assembling ADH to Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) -AuNPs aggregates (Ru-AuNPs) on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode surface has been developed. Positively charged Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) could be immobilized stably on the electrode surface with negatively charged AuNPs in the form of aggregate via electrostatic interaction. On the other hand, AuNPs are favourable candidates for the immobilization of enzymes because amine groups and cysteine residues in the enzymes are known to bind strongly with AuNPs. Moreover, AuNPs can act as tiny conduction centers to facilitate the transfer of electrons. Such biosensor combined enzymatic selectivity with the sensitivity of ECL detection for quantification of enzyme substrate, and it displayed wide linear range, high sensitivity and good stability.

We have investigated systematically the morphology of thin films spin-coated from solutions of a semicrystalline diblock copolymer, poly(L-lactic acid)-block-polystyrene (PLLA-b-PS), in solvents with varying selectivity. In neutral solvents (chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF)), a spinodal-like pattern was obtained and the pattern boundary was sharpened by diluting the solution. Meanwhile, loose spherical associates, together with larger aggregates composed of these associates by unimer bridges, formed partly due to crystallization of the PLLA blocks in relatively concentrated solutions. In slightly PS-selective solvent (e.g., benzene), both loose and compact spherical micelles were obtained, depending on the polymer concentration, coexisting with unimers. When enhancing the selectivity with mixed solvents, for example, mixing the neutral solvent and the slightly selective solvent with a highly PS-selective solvent, CS2, loose assemblies (nanorods in CS2/THF mixtures and polydisperse aggregates in CS2/benzene mixtures) and well-developed lamellar micelles were obtained.

A simple thermal process for the preparation of small Pt nanoparticles is presented, carried out by heating a H-2-PtCl6/3- thiophenemalonic acid aqueous solution. The following treatment of such colloidal Pt solution with Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) causes the assembly of Pt nanoparticles into aggregates. Most importantly, directly placing such aggregates on bare solid electrode surfaces can produce very stable films exhibiting excellent electrochemiluminescence behaviors.

Ring- and rod-shaped P4VP-b-PS-b-P4VP ( PS, polystyrene; P4VP, poly( 4-vinylpyridine)) triblock copolymer aggregates are used as templates to synthesize ZnS nanocrystals. Herein, PVP serves as both a stabilizing agent and a structure- directing agent. The resulting ZnS nanocrystals could be aligned along the corona of the copolymer aggregates in near-perfect structures through control of both the molar ratio of Zn2+ to P4VP and the reaction time. The diameter of the as-synthesized ZnS layer on the surface of polymer template is approximate 2 - 3 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the ZnS particles are single crystal in a zinc blende structure. This method provides a simple, reproducible route at room temperature to prepare assembled hybrid polymer - semiconductor nanocrystal nanocomposites.

This paper describes a simple approach to fabricate aggregates composed of monodispersed silica microspheres by modified micromolding in capillaries (MIMIC). Two different kinds of contact modes, namely, conformal contact and non-conformal contact, between the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) mold and the underlying prepatterned substrate, can be controlled during the micromolding, which result in the formation of different aggregates under the influence of template confinement and capillary forces. These aggregates, including woodpile structure, discoid, conoid and rectangular clusters, possess well-controlled sizes and orientation. The possible mechanisms for the formation of different aggregates are discussed in detail.
