The purpose of this investigation was to examine the preparation and characterisation of hexane-in-water emulsions stabilised by clay particles. These emulsions, called Pickering emulsions, are characterised by the adsorption of solid particles at the oil/water (o/w) interface. The development of an elastic film at the o/w interface following the adsorption of colloidal particles helps to promote emulsion stability. Three different solid materials were used: silica sand, kaolin, and bentonite. Particles were added to the liquid mixtures in the range of 0.5–10 g dm−3. Emulsions were prepared using o/w ratios of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The effect of sodium chloride, on the stability of the prepared emulsions, was assessed in the range of 0–0.5 mol dm−3. In addition the use of a cationic surfactant hexadecyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as an aid to improving emulsion stability was assessed in the concentration range of 0–0.05% (w/v). Characterisation of emulsion stability was realised through measurements of rheological properties including non-Newtonian viscosity, the elastic modulus, G', the loss modulus, G", and complex modulus, G*. The stability of the emulsions was evaluated immediately after preparation and 4 weeks later. Using the stability criteria, that for highly stable emulsions: G' > G" and both G' and G" are independent of frequency (varpi) it was concluded that highly stable emulsions could be prepared using a bentonite concentration of 2% (or more); an o/w ratio greater than 0.2; a CTAB concentration of 0.01%; and a salt concentration of 0.05 M or less—though salt was required.

Boron adsorption by soil is the main phenomenon that affects its availability to plants. This, the present study investigated the effect of liming on B adsorption by lowland soils of Parana State, and to correlate these values with the physical and chemical properties of the soils. Surface samples of three lowland soils [Gleissolo Haplico (GX), Plintossolo Haplico (FX) and Cambissolo Haplico (CX)], with different origin material and physicochemical properties were used. Samples with or without liming application were incubated during 60 days. Boron adsorption was accomplished by shaking 4.0g soil samples, for 24 h, with 20 mL of 0.01 mol L-1 CaCl2 solution containing different concentrations of B (0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 mg L-1). Sorption was fitted to non-linear form of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption isotherms indicated that the B adsorption increased with its increasing concentration in the equilibrium solution. Maximum adsorption capacity of B ranged from 3.0 to 13.9 mg kg(-1) (without liming) and 14.7 to 35.7 mg kg(-1) (with liming). Liming increased the amount of adsorbed B in Gleissolo Haplico and Plintossolo Haplico soils, although the bonding energy has decreased. The amount of adsorbed B by Cambissolo Haplico soil was not affected by liming application. The most important soil properties affecting the B adsorption in lowland soils were pH, clay content, exchangeable aluminum and iron oxide contents.

We studied an in vitro model of continuous venovenous haemofiltration to determine levofloxacin adsorption by polyacrylonitrile (PAN) filters. Four doses of levofloxacin (5, 25, 50 and 100 mg) were used, resulting in circulating concentrations of levofloxacin at 120 min of 3.56 +/- 0.14, 15.84 +/- 2.08, 31.42 +/- 1.95 and 58.23 +/- 1.10 mg/L, respectively. Adsorption at 2 h was 0.65 +/- 0.17, 5.99 +/- 2.49, 12.30 +/- 2.34 and 30.13 +/- 1.32 mg, respectively (P < 0.001). From 2 h to 4 h, increasing the blood pump rate and the ultrafiltration rate had no effect on adsorption. When the concentration was decreased from 3.55 +/- 0.13 mg/L at 4 h to 2.16 +/- 0.11 mg/L at 5 h by addition of lactated Ringer's solution, adsorption decreased from 0.67 +/- 0.16 mg to 0.21 +/- 0.25 mg (P < 0.05). These data show that adsorption of levofloxacin by PAN haemofilters is concentration dependent and reversible in vitro and suggest that adsorption by haemofilters is unlikely to affect levofloxacin pharmacokinetics significantly in vivo. Hydrocarbon spills on roads are a major safety concern for the driving public and can have severe cost impacts both on pavement maintenance and to the economy through disruption to services. The time taken to clean-up spills and re-open roads in a safe driving condition is an issue of increasing concern given traffic levels on major urban arterials. Thus, the primary aim of the research was to develop a sorbent material that facilitates rapid clean-up of road spills. The methodology involved extensive research into a range of materials (organic, inorganic and synthetic sorbents), comprehensive testing in the laboratory, scale-up and field, and product design (i.e. concept to prototype). The study also applied chemometrics to provide consistent, comparative methods of sorbent evaluation and performance. In addition, sorbent materials at every stage were compared against a commercial benchmark. For the first time, the impact of diesel on asphalt pavement has been quantified and assessed in a systematic way. Contrary to conventional thinking and anecdotal observations, the study determined that the action of diesel on asphalt was quite rapid (i.e. hours rather than weeks or months). This significant finding demonstrates the need to minimise the impact of hydrocarbon spills and the potential application of the sorbent option. To better understand the adsorption phenomenon, surface characterisation techniques were applied to selected sorbent materials (i.e. sand, organo-clay and cotton fibre). Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) and thermal analysis indicated that the main adsorption mechanism for the sorbents occurred on the external surface of the material in the diffusion region (sand and organo-clay) and/or capillaries (cotton fibre). Using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), it was observed that adsorption by the interfibre capillaries contributed to the high uptake of hydrocarbons by the cotton fibre. Understanding the adsorption mechanism for these sorbents provided some guidance and scientific basis for the selection of materials. The study determined that non-woven cotton mats were ideal sorbent materials for clean-up of hydrocarbon spills. The prototype sorbent was found to perform significantly better than the commercial benchmark, displaying the following key properties: • superior hydrocarbon pick-up from the road pavement; • high hydrocarbon retention capacity under an applied load; • adequate field skid resistance post treatment; • functional and easy to use in the field (e.g. routine handling, transportation, application and recovery); • relatively inexpensive to produce due to the use of raw cotton fibre and simple production process; • environmentally friendly (e.g. renewable materials, non-toxic to environment and operators, and biodegradable); and • rapid response time (e.g. two minutes total clean-up time compared with thirty minutes for reference sorbents). The major outcomes of the research project include: a) development of a specifically designed sorbent material suitable for cleaning up hydrocarbon spills on roads; b) submission of patent application (serial number AU2005905850) for the prototype product; and c) preparation of Commercialisation Strategy to advance the sorbent product to the next phase (i.e. R&D to product commercialisation).

The effect of gas molecule adsorption is investigated on the density of states of (9,0) zigzag boron nitride nanotube within a random tight-binding Hamiltonian model. The Green function approach and coherent potential approximation have been implemented. The results show that the adsorption of carbon dioxide gas molecules by boron atoms only leads to a donor type semiconductor while the adsorption by nitrogen atoms only leads to an acceptor. Since the gas molecules are adsorbed by both boron and nitrogen atoms, a reduction of the band gap is found. In all cases, increasing the gas concentration causes an increase in the height of the peaks in the band gap. This is due to an increasing charge carrier concentration induced by adsorbed gas molecules.

Granular reactive materials have higher permeability and are therefore desirable for in situ groundwater pollution control. Three granular bentonites were prepared: an Al-pillared bentonite (PBg), an organo-bentonite (OBg) using a quaternary ammonium cation (QAC), and an inorgano-organo-bentonite (IOBg), using both the pillaring agent and the QAC. Powdered IOB (IOBp) was also prepared to test the effect of particle size. The modified bentonites were characterised with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and uniaxial compression tests. The d-spacing increased only with QAC intercalation. The Young's modulus of IOBg was twice as high as OBg. Batch adsorption tests were performed with aqueous multimetal solutions of Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions, with liquid dodecane and with aqueous dodecane solutions. Metal adsorption fit the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption occurred within 30min for PBg, while the granular organo-bentonite needed at least 12h to reach equilibrium. IOBp had the maximum adsorption capacity at higher metal concentration and lower adsorbent content (Cu2+: 2.2, Ni2+: 1.7, Zn2+: 1.4, Cd2+: 0.9 and Pb2+: 0.7 all in mmolg-1). The dual pillaring of the QAC and Al hydroxide increased the adsorption. The adsorption of liquid dodecane was in the order IOBg>OBg>PBg (3.2>2.7>1.7mmolg-1). Therefore IOBg has potential for the removal of toxic compounds found in soil, groundwater, storm water and wastewater. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The semiconductor photocatalyst, platinised titanium dioxide, Pt/TiO2, is used to promote the destruction of bromate ions to bromide and oxygen by 254 nm ultraviolet light. The kinetics of bromate removal are first order with respect to [BrO3-] and are inhibited, although not completely, by competitive adsorption by other anions, including bromide and sulfate ions. The Pt/TiO2 can be used not only as a powder dispersion, but also as a thin film in a flow reactor for the destruction of bromate ions. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

The results of a kinetic study of the oxidative dissolution of ruthenium dioxide hydrate to ruthenium tetroxide by periodate ions, IO4-, in acidic solution are described. The kinetics of dissolution give a good fit to a 'soft-centre' model in which the particles of RuO2.xH2O are assumed to be monodispersed, spherical but inhomogeneous in composition, comprising a difficult-to-corrode outer shell and a more easy-to-corrode inner core. In this work metaperiodate appears to act as a two-electron oxidant. The observed kinetics fit a reaction scheme in which the rate-determining step is the reaction between a surface site and an adsorbed IO4 ion and there is competitive adsorption by any IO3- present. In the absence and presence of an excess of IO3- ions, the overall activation energy for the corrosion reaction was determined to be 38 +/- 2 and 54 +/- 4 kJ mol-1, respectively.

Currently microporous oxidic materials including zeolites are attracting interest as potential hydrogen storage materials. Understanding how molecular hydrogen interacts with these materials is important in the rational development of hydrogen storage materials and is also challenging theoretically. In this paper, we present an incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of the adsorption of molecular hydrogen and hydrogen deuteride (HD) in a copper substituted ZSM5 zeolite varying the hydrogen dosage and temperature. We have demonstrated how inelastic neutron scattering can help us understand the interaction of H-2 molecules with a binding site in a particular microporous material, Cu ZSM5, and by implication of other similar materials. The H-2 molecule is bound as a single species lying parallel with the surface. As H-2 dosing increases, lateral interactions between the adsorbed H-2 molecules become apparent. With rising temperature of measurement up to 70 K (the limit of our experiments), H-2 molecules remain bound to the surface equivalent to a liquid or solid H-2 phase. The implication is that hydrogen is bound rather strongly in Cu ZSM5. Using the simple model for the anisotropic interaction to calculate the energy levels splitting, we found that the measured rotational constant of the hydrogen molecule is reduced as a consequence of adsorption by the Cu ZSM5. From the decrease in total signal intensity with increasing temperature, we were able to observe the conversion of para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen at paramagnetic centres and so determine the fraction of paramagnetic sites occupied by hydrogen molecules, ca. 60%. The molecular arrangement in organic thin films is crucial for their increasing technological applications. Here, we use vibrational spectroscopy by sum-frequency generation (SFG) to study the ordering of polyelectrolyte layers adsorbed on silica for all steps of layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. In situ measurements during adsorption and rinsing showed that the adsorbed polymer has a disordered conformation and confirmed surface charge overcompensation upon polyelectrolyte adsorption by probing the interfacial electric field. In dry films, the polymer chains acquired a net orientational ordering, which was affected, however, by the adsorption of subsequent layers. Such a detailed characterization may allow the control of LbL film structure and functionality with unprecedented power.

In this work were synthesized matrix-based commercial white clay in its composition having large amounts of kaolinite and quartz, with a certain percentage of iron oxide for use as an adsorbent for hydrogen sulfide (H2S). To characterize the effect of initial matrix techniques were used to characterize XRD, FTIR, XRF and TG. The initial clay mineral matrix was placed in contact with 0.1 molar solutions of the salts of Co2+, Ni2+, Cr3+ and a solution 0.1 g / 100ml rhodamine B. During the synthesis process, the solutions were placed in contact with the initial matrix for a period of 48 hours in order to have ion exchange with the clay mineral. To check the amount of exchanged metals, we used the technique of X-ray Fluorescence (XRF). After synthesis was initiated the process of adsorption of H2S, where the arrays were placed in the reactor, then by passing a stream of hydrogen sulfide. The matrix along with the reactor was weighed before and after to measure the amount of gas adsorbed. Based on the gravimetric data the matrix which had the highest performance of the adsorption matrix was exchanged with Ni2+ ions, obtaining a result of 11.13 mg H2S / g matrix, then the matrix coated with rhodamine B which was reached 10.13 mg H2S / g matrix

The role of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in association to calcium carbonate particles (CaCO3) in most water-based drilling fluids is to reduce the fluid loss to the surrounding formation. Another essential function is to provide rheological properties capable of maintaining in suspension the cuttings during drilling operation. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to correlate the polymer chemical structure (degree of substitution, molecular weight and distribution of substituent) with the physical-chemical properties of CaCO3, in order to obtain the better result at lower cost. Another important aspect refers to the clay hydration inhibitive properties of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in drilling fluids systems. The clay swelling promotes an undesirable damage that reduces the formation permeability and causes serious problems during the drilling operation. In this context, this thesis consists of two main parts. The first part refers to understanding of interactions CMC-CaCO3, as well as the corresponding effects on the fluid properties. The second part is related to understanding of mechanisms by which CMC adsorption occurs onto the clay surface, where, certainly, polymer chemical structure, ionic strength, molecular weight and its solvency in the medium are responsible to affect intrinsically the clay layers stabilization. Three samples of carboximetilcellulose with different molecular weight and degree of substitution (CMC A (9 x 104 gmol DS 0.7), CMC B (2.5 x 105 gmol DS 0.7) e CMC C (2.5 x 105 gmol DS 1.2)) and three samples of calcite with different average particle diameter and particle size distribution were used. The increase of CMC degree of substitution contributed to increase of polymer charge density and therefore, reduced its stability in brine, promoting the aggregation with the increase of filtrate volume. On the other hand, the increase of molecular weight promoted an increase of rheological properties with reduction of filtrate volume. Both effects are directly associated to hydrodynamic volume of polymer molecule in the medium. The granulometry of CaCO3 particles influenced not only the rheological properties, due to adsorption of polymers, but also the filtration properties. It was observed that the lower filtrate volume was obtained by using a CaCO3 sample of a low average size particle with wide dispersion in size. With regards to inhibition of clay swelling, the CMC performance was compared to other products often used (sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride (KCl) and quaternary amine-based commercial inhibitor). The low molecular weight CMC (9 x 104 g/mol) showed slightly lower swelling degree compared to the high molecular weight (2.5 x 105 g/mol) along to 180 minutes. In parallel, it can be visualized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) that the high molecular weight CMC (2.5 x 105 g/mol e DS 0.7) promoted a reduction in pores formation and size of clay compared to low molecular weight CMC (9.0 x 104 g/mol e DS 0.7), after 1000 minutes in aqueous medium. This behavior was attributed to dynamic of interactions between clay and the hydrodynamic volume of CMC along the time, which is result of strong contribution of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bounds between carboxylate groups and hydroxyls located along the polymer backbone and ionic and polar groups of clay surface. CMC adsorbs on clay surface promoting the skin formation , which is responsible to minimize the migration of water to porous medium. With the increase of degree of substitution, it was observed an increase of pores onto clay, suggesting that the higher charge density on polymer is responsible to decrease its flexibility and adsorption onto clay surface. The joint evaluation of these results indicate that high molecular weight is responsible to better results on control of rheological, filtration and clay swelling properties, however, the contrary effect is observed with the increase of degree of substitution. On its turn, the calcite presents better results of rheological and filtration properties with the decrease of average viii particle diameter and increase of particle size distribution. According to all properties evaluated, it has been obvious the interaction of CMC with the minerals (CaCO3 and clay) in the aqueous medium
