The mechanisms of densification and creep were examined during spark plasma sintering (SPS) of alumina doped with a low and high level of zirconia or yttria, over a temperature range of 1173-1573 K and stresses between 25 and 100 MPa. Large additions of yttria led clearly to in situ reactions during SPS and the formation of a yttrium-aluminum garnet phase. Dopants generally lead to a reduction in the densification rate, with substantial reductions noted in samples with similar to 5.5 vol% second phase. In contrast to a stress exponent of n similar to 1 for pure alumina, the doped aluminas displayed n similar to 2 corresponding to an interface-controlled diffusion process. The higher activation energies in the composites are consistent with previous data on creep and changes in the interfacial energies. The results reveal a compensation effect, such that an increase in the activation energy is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the pre-exponential term for diffusion.

Infrared (1.2-1.6 mum) luminescence in a yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) crystal, co-doped with Yb (10 at.%) and Cr (0.05 at.%) ions, was investigated under CW laser diode pumping (lambda = 940 nm). The Cr4+ emission band was observed with its peak at 1.35 mum and measured to be about 6% with respect to Yb3+ IR luminescence (lambda = 1.03 mum). Analysis of the crystal absorption and luminescence spectra allows one to conclude that Yb3+-Cr4+ energy transfer is a mechanism responsible for the B-3(2)(T-3(2))-B-3(1)((3)A(2)) emission of Cr4+ ions. This crystal is promising as an efficient source of the near infrared emission. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report the synthesis of high-luminance Y2O3:Eu nanocrystal through a citrate-nitrate complexation combustion method at a low temperature of 200-280 degrees C. The as-combusted Y2O3:Eu phosphors are almost equiaxed crystallites with an average size of 30-40 run, and have an intense red luminescence. The present fuel-deficient method suggests that by control of the ratio of citric acid to nitrates, it is valuable for the fabrication of Y2O3 nanoparticles without heat treatment. This process should be applicable to a wide range of nanocrystal oxides.

Y4Al2O9:EU3+ phosphor was synthesized through a sol-gel combustion method. The Y4Al2O9 phase can form through sintering at 800 degrees C. This temperature is much lower than that required via the solid state reaction method. The average grain size of the phosphor was about 30 run. Compared with the amorphous phosphor, the charge transfer band of crystalline phosphor shows a blue shift. The emission Of Y4Al2O9:Eu3+ indicates the existence of two luminescent centers, in agreement with the crystal structure of Y4Al2O9. Higher doping concentration could be realized in Y4Al2O9 nanocrystal host lattice. This indicates that the sol-gel combustion synthesis method can increase emission intensity and quenching concentration due to a good distribution of EU3+ activators in Y4Al2O9 host. In Yb3Fe5O12, the exchange effective field can be expressed as H-eff = -lambda center dot center dot center dot M-Fe = -lambda chi(eff)center dot center dot center dot H-e = -gamma center dot center dot center dot H-e where gamma is named as the exchange field parameter and H-e is the external magnetic field. Then, in this paper, by the discussions on the characteristics of the exchange field parameter gamma, the properties of exchange interaction in ytterbium iron garnet (Yb3Fe5O12) are analyzed under extreme conditions (high magnetic fields and low temperatures). Our theory suggests that the exchange field parameter gamma is the function of the temperatures under different external magnetic fields, and gamma = a+b center dot center dot center dot T+c center dot center dot center dot T-2, where the coefficients a, b, c are associated with the external magnetic fields and the magnetized directions. Thus, the temperature-dependence, field-dependence and anisotropic characteristics of the exchange interaction in Yb3Fe5O12 are revealed. Also, excellent fits to the available experiments are obtained. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report on recent experimental results of the spontaneous antiphase dynamics that occurs in a laser-diode-pumped multimode passively Q-switched microchip Yb:YAG (where YAG is yttrium aluminum garnet) lasers with a saturable absorber GaAs. We observe that the pulse sequence of the first mode characterized by one, two, and three pulses as a group and all the modes display an antiphase state as the pumping ratio rises. We modify the multimode rate equations to account for nonlinear absorption due to GaAs in the presence of spatial hole burning. We perform numerical simulations based on the proposed rate equations and reproduce the observed antiphase state of two and three active modes.

La2Zr2O7 (LZ) is a promising thermal barrier coating material for the high-temperature applications, which could be significantly toughened by the YAG nanopowder incorporated into the matrix. The composites of xYAG/(1-x)LZ (Y=10, 15, 20 vol. %, LZ-x-YAG) were densified by means of high-pressure sintering (HPS) under a pressure of 4.5 GPa at 1650 degrees C for 5 min, by which a high-relative density above 93% could be obtained. The morphologies of the fractured surfaces were investigated by the scanning electron microscope, and the fracture toughness and Vicker's-hardness of the composites were evaluated by the microindentation. The grain size of the LZ matrix drops significantly with the addition of YAG nanoparticles and the fracture type changes from the intergranular to a mixture type of the transgranular and intergranular in the nanocomposites. The LZ-20-YAG nanocomposite has a fracture toughness of 1.93 MPa m(1/2), which is obviously higher than that of the pure LZ (1.57 MPa m(1/2)), and the toughening mechanism is discussed in this paper.

By using metal nitrates and oxides as the starting materials, Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and YAG: RE3+ (RE: Eu, Dy) powder phosphors were prepared by solid state (SS), coprecipitation (CP) and citrate-gel (CG) methods, respectively. The resulting YAG based phosphors were characterized by XRD and photoluminescent excitation and emission spectra as well as lifetimes. The purified crystalline phases of YAG were obtained at 800degreesC (CG) and 900degreesC (CP and SS), respectively. Great differences were observed for the excitation and emission spectra of Eu3+ and Dy3+ between crystalline and amorphous states of YAG, and their emission intensities increased with increasing the annealing temperature. At an identical annealing temperature and doping concentration, the Eu3+ and Dy3+ showed the strongest and weakest emission intensity in CP- and CG-derived YAG phosphors, respectively. The poor emission intensity for CG-derived phosphors is mainly caused by the contamination organic impurities from citric acid in the starting materials. Furthermore, the lifetimes for the samples derived from CG and CP routes are shorter than those derived from the SS route.

By using metal nitrates and oxides as the starting materials, Y2Al5O12 (YAG) and YAG:Re3+ (Re = Ce, Sm, Th) powder phosphors were prepared by solid-state (SS), coprecipitation (CP) and citrate gel (CG) methods. The resulting YAG and YAG-based phosphors were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and photoluminescent excitation and emission spectra. The purified crystalline phases of YAG were obtained at 800 degreesC (CG) and 900 degreesC (CP, SS). At an identical annealing temperature and doping concentration, the doped rare-earth ions showed the stronger emission intensity in the CP- and SS-derived phosphors than the CG-derived YAG phosphors. The poor emission intensity for the CG-derived phosphors is mainly caused by the contamination of carbon impurities from citric acid in the starting materials.

By using metal nitrates as starting materials and citric acid as complexing agent, Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and Y3Al5O12:Eu (1 mol%) (YAG:Eu) powder phosphors were prepared by a citrate-gel method. The formation process of YAG and YAG:Eu were investigated by means of XRD, TG-DTA and FT-IR spectra. The purified crystalline phases of YAG and YAG:Eu were obtained at 800 degreesC. The crystalline YAG:Eu phosphors showed an orange-red emission with D-5(0)-F-7(1) (591 nm) as the most prominent group, whose intensity was dependent on the pH value of the starting solution, citric acid content and firing temperature. It has been found that the suitable pH and citric acid/metal ratio are 3 and 2 for obtaining the highest emission intensity, respectively. The emission intensity increases steadily with increasing the annealing temperature from 800 to 1200 degreesC, and nearly remains constant after 1200 degreesC. Furthermore, great differences were observed for the lifetimes and the charge transfer band of Eu3+ in crystalline and amorphous states of YAG.

The density matrix resonant two-photon absorption (TPA) theory is applied to a rare-earth ion-doped laser crystal. TPA cross sections for transitions from the ground state to the first 4f5d state in Pr3+:YAG are calculated. The results indicate the density matrix TPA theory is attractive in studying TPA in laser crystals. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
