Testing for Market Power in Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output Industries: The Australian Grains and Oilseeds Industries

Recent empirical studies have found significant evidence of departures from competition in the input side of the Australian bread, breakfast cereal and margarine end-product markets. For example, Griffith (2000) found that firms in some parts of the processing and marketing sector exerted market power when purchasing grains and oilseeds from farmers. As noted at the time, this result accorded well with the views of previous regulatory authorities (p.358). In the mid-1990s, the Prices Surveillence Authority (PSA 1994) determined that the markets for products contained in the Breakfast Cereals and Cooking Oils and Fats indexes were "not effectively competitive" (p.14). The PSA consequently maintained price surveillence on the major firms in this product group. The Griffith result is also consistent with the large number of legal judgements against firms in this sector over the past decade for price fixing or other types of non-competitive behaviour. For example, bread manufacturer George Weston was fined twice during 2000 for non-competitive conduct and the ACCC has also recently pursued and won cases against retailer Safeway in grains and oilseeds product lines.

O projecto “Principais tendências no cinema português contemporâneo” nasceu no Departamento de Cinema da ESTC, com o objectivo de desenvolver investigação especializada a partir de um núcleo formado por alunos da Licenciatura em Cinema e do Mestrado em Desenvolvimento de Projecto Cinematográfico, a que se juntaram professores-investigadores membros do CIAC e convidados. O que agora se divulga corresponde a dois anos e meio de trabalho desenvolvido pela equipa de investigação, entre Abril de 2009 e Novembro de 2011. Dada a forma que ele foi adquirindo, preferimos renomeá-lo, para efeitos de divulgação, “Novas & velhas tendências no cinema português contemporâneo”.

EVALUATION OF THE MOLLUSCICIDAL POTENTIAL OF HYDROALCOHOLIC EXTRACTS OF Jatropha gossypiifolia Linnaeus, 1753 ON Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818)

The action of extracts from the stem, leaves, and fruit of Jatropha gossypiifolia on Biomphalaria glabrata was studied by analyzing survival, feeding capacity and oviposition ability. The extracts were obtained by macerating the plant parts in 92% ethanol, which were then evaporated until a dry residue was obtained and phytochemically studied. The molluscicidal activity on B. glabrata was investigated using the procedures recommended by WHO (1965). The amount of food ingested and oviposition were measured during each experiment. The extract of leaves from J. gossypiifolia was shown to be a strong molluscicidal agent, causing 100% mortality of B. glabrata, even in the lowest concentration tested, of 25 ppm. Regarding the fruit extract, there was variation in the mortality, depending on the concentration used (100, 75, 50 and 25 ppm). The snails that were in contact with the fruit extract had significant reduction in feeding and number of embryos in comparison to the control. The stem extract did not present molluscicidal activity nor had any influence on the feeding and oviposition abilities of B. glabrata, in the concentrations tested. In conclusion, the extracts of leaves and fruits of J. gossypiifolia investigated in this work show molluscicidal effect and may be sources of useful compounds for the schistosomiasis control.

A efeméride suscita a curiosidade de públicos muito diferenciados o que é sempre estimulante. A produção escrita dá conta de um assinalável recrudescimento em volta do tema, como algumas das imagens agora recuperadas para a nossa comunicação ilustram . Contudo, alguns anos antes, o CETAPS, Centre for English, Translation and Anglo‑Portuguese Studies, à época, CEAP, Centro de Estudos Anglo‑Portugueses, fora pioneiro na divulgação de temas e obras relacionando o que a História e a Literatura haviam dado a conhecer, no respeitante aos Estudos Anglo‑Portugueses e à temática em epígrafe. Saliente‑se, em especial, o mestrado desenvolvido em torno das campanhas napoleónicas visando colmatar lacunas sobre o conhecimento relativo à presença britânica no nosso país e à imagem que os relatos dos militares nelas envolvidas haviam dado conta. Vários foram os documentos científicos produzidos (nomeadamente teses e comunicações), alguns dos quais foram depois editados. A obra assinada por Gabriela Gândara Terenas, O Portugal da Guerra Peninsular – A Visão dos Militares Britânicos (1808‑1812), dada ao prelo em Junho de 2000, em muito veio suprir essa lacuna, pois a um só tempo se propôs conciliar temáticas complementares, reunindo os aspectos que a literatura de viagem e os testemunhos de guerra oferecem.
