Mathematics is beautiful and precise and often necessary to understand complex biological phenomena. And yet biologists cannot always hope to fully understand the mathematical foundations of the theory they are using or testing. How then should biologists behave when mathematicians themselves are in dispute? Using the on-going controversy over Hamilton's rule as an example, I argue that biologists should be free to treat mathematical theory with a healthy dose of agnosticism. In doing so biologists should equip themselves with a disclaimer that publicly admits that they cannot entirely attest to the veracity of the mathematics underlying the theory they are using or testing. The disclaimer will only help if it is accompanied by three responsibilities - stay bipartisan in a dispute among mathematicians, stay vigilant and help expose dissent among mathematicians, and make the biology larger than the mathematics. I must emphasize that my goal here is not to take sides in the on-going dispute over the mathematical validity of Hamilton's rule, indeed my goal is to argue that we should refrain from taking sides.

Peristaltic pumps were normally used to pump liquids in several chemical and biological applications. In the present study, a peristaltic pump was used to pressurize the chamber (positive as well negative pressures) using atmospheric air. In the present paper, we discuss the development and performance study of an automatic pressurization system to calibrate low range (millibar) pressure sensors. The system includes a peristaltic pump, calibrated pressure sensor (master sensor), pressure chamber, and the control electronics. An in-house developed peristaltic pump was used to pressurize the chamber. A closed loop control system has been developed to detect and adjust the pressure leaks in the chamber. The complete system has been integrated into a portable product. The system performance has been studied for a step response and steady state errors. The system is portable, free from oil contaminants, and consumes less power compared to existing pressure calibration systems. The veracity of the system was verified by calibrating an unknown diaphragm based pressure sensor and the results obtained were satisfactory. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Resumen: El trabajo que presentamos a continuación tiene como objetivo abordar distintos aspectos sobre la construcción de las imágenes y de las prácticas discursivas que se proyectaron sobre el Islam y los musulmanes en la Castilla medieval. En este sentido, daremos cuenta del contexto mediterráneo y peninsular en la tensión Cristianismo-Islam, así como también de algunas medidas que desde la Iglesia romana se proyectaban sobre los moros. Recogeremos los antecedentes de las polémicas antiislámicas para luego adentrarnos en el universo castellano y ejemplificar estas disputas con algunos escritores cristianos para analizar sus posturas respecto del Islam y la veracidad de su religión.

Resumen: ¿Cómo se describe y, por lo tanto, cómo se percibe el paisaje natural en ámbitos en permanente tensión y confrontación? ¿Cómo hacer referencia a una realidad geográfica conocida y temida a la vez? Para responder a estas cuestiones recurriré a Los Milagros de Guadalupe conservados en el Archivo del Real Monasterio de Guadalupe (Cáceres, España), milagros que me permitirán profundizar una línea de análisis escasamente desarrollada, como es la del lugar dedicado a los conocimientos geográficos. Estos conocimientos resultan ser muy valiosos, dado que otorgan veracidad al relato guadalupano a la vez que ofrecen caracterizaciones que, además de edificantes desde una perspectiva moral y religiosa, resultan útiles desde un punta de vista práctico al indicar distancias, profundidades de ríos y arroyos, animales a los que temer, etc.

[ES] Es obligatorio para las empresas cotizadas que cuenten con una página web para atender el derecho de información de los accionistas, y donde difundir información relevante y obligatoria. Por ello, se creó la normativa necesaria para regular tanto la información mínima que las empresas debían aportar en sus webs, como los requisitos técnicos y jurídicos que dichas páginas debían poseer. No obstante, todas las empresas no presentan la misma información en sus webs, ya que muchas no se limitan a presentar solo la exigida por ley, y ésta puede ser más o menos útil para los usuarios. Por eso, es imprescindible poder conocer de alguna forma la transparencia que las empresas muestran a los usuarios en sus páginas web y en particular a los accionistas, si existe asimetría informativa o no, y saber cuál es el grado de calidad de la información presentada, así como la confianza que se puede tener en la misma.

Com a chegada dos europeus ao Brasil, inicia-se a intensa exploração dos recursos da Mata Atlântica, direcionados primeiramente para uso da coroa e, posteriormente, para os assentamentos populacionais da colônia. As informações sobre o uso de madeiras na época do Brasil-colônia de Portugal (1630-1822) são escassas e se encontram dispersas. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma referência cruzada utilizando três diferentes tipos de culturas materiais: documentos históricos, artefatos e paisagem. Tendo como foco as senzalas da Fazenda Ponte Alta no estado do Rio de Janeiro/RJ, relacionou-se os dados históricos sobre o uso de madeiras de construção no período colonial com o conhecimento científico atual sobre a flora de Mata Atlântica, identificando as espécies utilizadas no passado e sua ocorrência nos fragmentos florestais remanescentes. Para tal, foram visitadas bibliotecas nacionais e internacionais; analisadas amostras das madeiras da estrutura das senzalas e realizado um inventário fitossociológico nos fragmentos florestais remanescentes. Como um dos principais resultados, destaca-se o expressivo número de espécies madeireiras da Mata Atlântica que eram utilizadas nas construções do Brasil-colônia. E que a preferência de uso de determinados táxons pertencentes à Leguminosae, Sapotaceae e Lauraceae, reflete a disponibilidade e abundância dessas famílias no Bioma. Das espécies identificadas nas estruturas das senzalas, 68% foram citadas nos documentos históricos como sendo utilizadas em construções no período colonial e 37% dessas, também foram amostradas no inventário fitossociológico realizado. Constatou-se que as espécies utilizadas para construção no Brasilcolônia apresentavam, na maioria, boa qualidade e alta resistência o que lhes conferia uma multiplicidade de uso. Essa demanda, certamente, tem reflexos diretos na distribuição geográfica, no tamanho populacional e no status de conservação atual das espécies. Os resultados indicam, também, que os construtores do período, principais atores da história, detinham o conhecimento necessário à utilização das florestas locais. Assim, os dados obtidos nos diferentes materiais analisados se mostraram complementares e com interação entre si, agregando informação e veracidade aos argumentos inicialmente postulados

Esta dissertação se detém em duas das principais características da literatura brasileira contemporânea: a profusão de escritas de si e a recorrência de personagens-escritores na produção romanesca. Nesse contexto, a discussão concentra-se em algumas das obras de um dos mais consagrados escritores brasileiros da atualidade: Cristovão Tezza. Em se tratando das escritas de si, discutimos a respeito do premiado romance O filho eterno (2007), por ser uma narrativa que congrega elementos factuais e criação ficcional. Nesse sentido, fazer da relação com o próprio filho Down a matéria-prima de um romance significa enveredar pelos caminhos dos gêneros autobiográficos, estabelecendo um novo paradigma em relação a suas obras anteriores, já que, até então, nenhum espaço para a abordagem de elementos referenciais havia sido aberto. Na discussão dessa obra, consideramos que, apesar de se inclinar à autobiografia, o autor lhe distribui índices de ficcionalidade que colocam em xeque a veracidade do discurso, o que impossibilita a delimitação do gênero entre autobiografia e romance. Nesse caso, o que passa a estar em jogo é a ficcionalização do eu frente à criação literária. Num segundo momento, refletimos sobre a inserção de personagens-escritores na escrita tezziana, recurso amplamente utilizado pelo autor em diversas obras ficcionais, investigando os motivos e implicações dessa recorrência. Para empreender tal análise, recorremos às noções de metaficção e gesto literário, visto que a tematização do universo íntimo do escritor na esfera ficcional evidencia o ato de escrever e seu caráter problematizador. Por último, fazemos uma leitura comparada entre o romance de matiz biográfico O filho eterno e a autobiografia literária O espírito da prosa, tendo por premissa que esta pode funcionar como peça-chave na recepção daquele

The chemical index of alteration has been used widely for reconstruction of the palaeoclimate. However, the mechanisms and environmental factors controlling the chemical index of alteration of sediments are not yet fully understood. In this study, autocorrelations of the chemical index of alteration in nine sedimentary profiles, from both the land and the sea, spanning different geological times, are discussed. The sediments of these profiles have different origins (dust, fluvial or ocean sediments) and are from various climate situations and sedimentary environments. Autocorrelations of chemical index of alteration series are ubiquitously evident in all profiles. It is suggested here that autocorrelations may be caused by post-depositional changes such as persistent weathering and diagenesis. As a result, the chemical index of alteration may not reflect climatic conditions during the time of sediment deposition. This study strongly recommends the confirmation of the reliability and veracity of the chemical index of alteration before it is adopted to evaluate the weathering degree of parent rocks and to reconstruct the past climate. Significant autocorrelations in loess profiles were specifically observed, suggesting that the existing understanding of loess deposition in terms of climate conditions requires re-examination, and that previous reconstructions of rapid climate changes (for example, in centennial-millennial scales) should be treated with caution.

CANopen是一种开放的应用层协议,其应用可以进一步提高系统的可靠性、通讯效率及灵活性,而且可以使产品具有很好的兼容性。本文采用CANopen通讯协议实现了CAN总线DSP系统与上位机CAN卡之间的通讯,并通过测试实验验证了信息传递的可靠性,保证了全数字网络化伺服驱动系统中对电机控制的准确性和实时性。

1. A first step in the analysis of complex movement data often involves discretisation of the path into a series of step-lengths and turns, for example in the analysis of specialised random walks, such as Lévy flights. However, the identification of turning points, and therefore step-lengths, in a tortuous path is dependent on ad-hoc parameter choices. Consequently, studies testing for movement patterns in these data, such as Lévy flights, have generated debate. However, studies focusing on one-dimensional (1D) data, as in the vertical displacements of marine pelagic predators, where turning points can be identified unambiguously have provided strong support for Lévy flight movement patterns. 2. Here, we investigate how step-length distributions in 3D movement patterns would be interpreted by tags recording in 1D (i.e. depth) and demonstrate the dimensional symmetry previously shown mathematically for Lévy-flight movements. We test the veracity of this symmetry by simulating several measurement errors common in empirical datasets and find Lévy patterns and exponents to be robust to low-quality movement data. 3. We then consider exponential and composite Brownian random walks and show that these also project into 1D with sufficient symmetry to be clearly identifiable as such. 4. By extending the symmetry paradigm, we propose a new methodology for step-length identification in 2D or 3D movement data. The methodology is successfully demonstrated in a re-analysis of wandering albatross Global Positioning System (GPS) location data previously analysed using a complex methodology to determine bird-landing locations as turning points in a Lévy walk. For this high-resolution GPS data, we show that there is strong evidence for albatross foraging patterns approximated by truncated Lévy flights spanning over 3·5 orders of magnitude. 5. Our simple methodology and freely available software can be used with any 2D or 3D movement data at any scale or resolution and are robust to common empirical measurement errors. The method should find wide applicability in the field of movement ecology spanning the study of motile cells to humans.

UVES interstellar observations from the Paranal Observatory Project are presented for early-type stars located in the line of sight to the nearby open clusters IC 2391 (Omni Vel) and NGC 6475 (M7), with spectroscopic resolution R similar to 80 000 and signal-to-noise ratios in the Ti II (3383 angstrom), Ca II K, CH+ (4232 angstrom), Na I D and K I (7698 angstrom) lines of several hundred. The sightlines are a mixture of cluster and non-cluster objects. A total of 22 early-type stars (A and B type) are present in our sample towards IC 2391, with 21 towards NGC 6475/M7, and enable us to probe for differences in column density on scales from similar to 0.07 to 7.3 and similar to 0.05 to 4.9 pc in the respective clusters. Additionally, towards Praesepe the Na I D interstellar variation only is probed towards 13 sightlines and transverse scales of similar to 0.16-10.7 pc at R = 70 000. Towards IC 2391 variations are found in Ti II, Ca II K and Na I D column density in different sightlines of up to 0.7, 1.0 and 1.8 dex (excluding one star), respectively. This kind of variability correlates well with the Hipparcos parallax of the objects, and probes structure within the Local Bubble. For cluster-only objects the variations are 0.3, 0.3 and 0.5 dex, respectively. For the field of view towards NGC6475 the corresponding maximum variations are somewhat smaller, being 0.5, 0.3, 0.8 and 1.0 dex for Ti II, Ca II K, Na I and K I, respectively, for all objects and 0.4, 0.2, 0.6 and 0.7 dex for the cluster-only objects. These are uncorrelated with parallax, and again demonstrate that Ca II K tends to be more smoothly distributed than Na I D. A few likely cluster sightlines show evidence for CH+ and variations in this molecular species of a factor of 10 in equivalent width over sub-pc scales. Towards Praesepe variation in interstellar Na I D is small, being a maximum of only similar to 0.4 dex (including measurement errors), but with fewer sightlines studied. Overall, the scatter in the data is similar for the singly ionized species Ti II and Ca II, lending more support to the hypothesis that these two species sample similar parts of the interstellar medium (ISM). This also appears to be the case for the neutral species Na I D and K I in the one cluster studied. Finally, multiple-epoch observations from a variety of archive sources are used to search for astronomical unit (au) scale structure in the ISM towards 46 sightlines. There are tentative indications of structure on scales of tens to thousands of au for three sightlines. Future observations will confirm the veracity or otherwise of the time-variable components and others presented.

Contemporary settled democracies, including the United States, England and Wales and Ireland, have witnessed a string of high profile cases of institutional child abuse in both church and state settings. Set against the broader literature on transitional justice, this analysis argues that there are significant barriers to truth recovery within the particular context of historical institutional abuse by the clergy in the Republic of Ireland. In the main, I argue that the frameworks of the inquiries and commissions into historical institutional child abuse are not conducive to truth recovery or the search for justice in dealing with the legacy of an abusive past. It is the church-state relationship which makes the Irish situation noteworthy and unique. The Catholic Church and child care institutions are especially self-protective, secretive and closed by nature and strongly discourage the drawing of attention to any deficiencies in organisational procedures. The nature of the public inquiry process also means that there is often a rather linear focus on accountability and apportioning blame. Collectively, such difficulties inhibit fuller systemic investigation of the veracity of what actually happened and, in turn, meaningful modification of child care policies. The article concludes by offering some thoughts on implications for transitional justice discourses more broadly as well as the residual issues for Ireland and other settled democracies in terms of moving on from the legacy of institutional child abuse.

This paper compares the applicability of three ground survey methods for modelling terrain: one man electronic tachymetry (TPS), real time kinematic GPS (GPS), and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Vertical accuracy of digital terrain models (DTMs) derived from GPS, TLS and airborne laser scanning (ALS) data is assessed. Point elevations acquired by the four methods represent two sections of a mountainous area in Cumbria, England. They were chosen so that the presence of non-terrain features is constrained to the smallest amount. The vertical accuracy of the DTMs was addressed by subtracting each DTM from TPS point elevations. The error was assessed using exploratory measures including statistics, histograms, and normal probability plots. The results showed that the internal measurement accuracy of TPS, GPS, and TLS was below a centimetre. TPS and GPS can be considered equally applicable alternatives for sampling the terrain in areas accessible on foot. The highest DTM vertical accuracy was achieved with GPS data, both on sloped terrain (RMSE 0.16. m) and flat terrain (RMSE 0.02. m). TLS surveying was the most efficient overall but veracity of terrain representation was subject to dense vegetation cover. Therefore, the DTM accuracy was the lowest for the sloped area with dense bracken (RMSE 0.52. m) although it was the second highest on the flat unobscured terrain (RMSE 0.07. m). ALS data represented the sloped terrain more realistically (RMSE 0.23. m) than the TLS. However, due to a systematic bias identified on the flat terrain the DTM accuracy was the lowest (RMSE 0.29. m) which was above the level stated by the data provider. Error distribution models were more closely approximated by normal distribution defined using median and normalized median absolute deviation which supports the use of the robust measures in DEM error modelling and its propagation. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Spatially resolved polarization switching In ferroelectric nanocapacitors was studied on the sub-25 nm scale using the first-order reversal curve (FORC) method. The chosen capacitor geometry allows both high-veracity observation of the domain structure and mapping of polarization switching in a uniform field, synergistically combining microstructural observations and probing of uniform-field polarization responses as relevant to device operation. A classical Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi model has been adapted to the voltage domain, and the individual switching dynamics of the FORC response curves are well approximated by the adapted model. The comparison with microstructures suggests a strong spatial variability of the switching dynamics inside the nanocapacitors.
