A series of novel polyimides was synthesized from alicyclic diamines and various aromatic dianhydrides by one-step polymerization in m-cresol without a catalyst. The polymerization was conducted for 4 hours with refluxing, which was enough to obtain the polymers with high molecular weight. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polyimides were in the range of 0.30 similar to 1.29 dL/g. The prepared polyimides showed excellent thermal stabilities and good solubility. All the polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrachloroethane (TCE), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), etc and the glass transition temperatures were observed at 199 to 311 degrees C. UV-visible spectra were obtained to measure the transparency of polymer films. All the polymers showed high transmission above 90% in the wavelength of 400 similar to 700 nm.

Iron(II)-8-quinolino/MCM-41 is prepared. Its catalysis is studied in phenol hydroxylation using H2O2 (30%) as oxidant. The experiment shows that Iron(II)-8-quinolinol/MCM-41 has good catalytic activity and desired stability. Based on cyclic voltammetry, ESR, and UV-visible spectra studies of iron(II)-8-quinolinol complex in liquid phase, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and used to demonstrate the experimental facts clearly. The electrochemical behavior of the title compound (denoted Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-)) in aqueous solution has been studied using cyclic voltammetry, sampled d.c. voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and bulk electrolysis with coulometry, The stable pH range of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-) is determined with UV-visible spectra. In the potential range between 0.70 and -0.45 V vs. SCE, the anion in pH 3.8 aqueous solution undergoes one-, one-, two- and two-electron steps of four redox processes attributed to electron addition and removal from the molybdate-oxo framework. The adsorption of the anion on the dropping mercury electrode and a self-inhibition influence of the adsorbed anions on the redox process of those anions dissolved in solution are found. The unusual dependence of the formal potentials on pH is explained with the competition of the protonation and ion-pair formation due to the high negative charge of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-) and its reduced forms. The electrocatalytic effects of the anion on the bromate are investigated.

Functionalized polypyrrole films were prepared electrochemically in the presence of indigo-carmine from aqueous solution. The film shows a couple of reversible redox peaks superimposed on a large background of polypyrrole. The redox reaction is pH dependent. The film has good stability in air and can be cycled between -0.1 and 0.4 V (Ag/AgCl) for several hours without any significant changes in the voltammograms. UV-visible spectra indicate the incorporation of indigo-carmine into the polymer matrix.

Nickel tungstate (NiWO4) nano-particles were successfully synthesized at low temperatures by a molten salt method, and characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet visible spectra techniques (UV-vis), respectively. The effects of calcining temperature and salt quantity on the crystallization and development of NiWO4 crystallites were studied. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized NiWO4 nano-particles with about 30 nm in diameter could be prepared at 270 degrees C with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to NiWO4 precursor. XRD analysis confirmed that the product was a pure monoclinic phase of NiWO4 with wolframite structure. UV-vis spectrum revealed that NiWO4 nano-particles had good light absorption properties in both ultraviolet and visible light region. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. With addition of methanol in acetic acid solvent, m-phenoxytoluene could be oxidized to m-phenoxybenzaldehyde selectively by a cobalt bromide catalyst. Paratemters such as the ratio of Co/Br and the reaction time of m-phenoxytoluene oxidation as well as visible spectra of cobalt bromide in acetic acid/methanol solvents, were also investigated. Addition of methanol caused the oxidation of aldehydes to proceed more slowly than it did solely in acetic acid solvent. The decrease of cobaltous-multibromides in acetic acid/methanol solvents was responsible for the improvement in the selective oxidation of m-phenoxytoluene. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. This paper describes the status of the 2008 edition of the HITRAN molecular spectroscopic database. The new edition is the first official public release since the 2004 edition, although a number of crucial updates had been made available online since 2004. The HITRAN compilation consists of several components that serve as input for radiative-transfer calculation codes: individual line parameters for the microwave through visible spectra of molecules in the gas phase; absorption cross-sections for molecules having dense spectral features, i.e. spectra in which the individual lines are not resolved; individual line parameters and absorption cross-sections for bands in the ultraviolet; refractive indices of aerosols, tables and files of general properties associated with the database; and database management software. The line-by-line portion of the database contains spectroscopic parameters for 42 molecules including many of their isotopologues. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.

The kinetics of the alkaline hydrolysis of trinitrotoluene, TNT, in an aqueous solution is a possible approach to destroying the active agent in unwanted munitions. The kinetics are shown to have a rapid initial step, step A, in which a highly coloured species, X (lambda(max) = 450 nm) is formed via an equilibrium reaction: TNT + OH- double left right arrow X. The bimolecular rate constant for the forward part of this equilibrium process, k(1), is: 0.099 +/- 0.004, 0.32 +/- 0.02 and 1.27 +/- 0.05 dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1), at 25, 40 and 60degreesC, respectively. The activation energy for the forward process is 60 kJ mol(-1). The first-order rate constant for the reverse of this process, k(-1), is: (5.3 +/- 2.6) x 10(-4), (1.2 +/- 1.0) x 10(-3) and (7.7 +/- 2.9) x 10(-3) s(-1) at 25, 40 and 60degreesC, respectively. The activation energy for the overall equilibrium process (k(1)/k(-1)) is ca. -5 kJ mol(-1). The subsequent alkaline hydrolysis of X to form the final product P, i.e. step B, is much slower than step A and appears to comprise two processes coupled in series, i.e. steps B1 (X +2OH(-) --> Z) and B2 (Z+OH- --> P). At 25degreesC, Step B1 appears rate determining throughout the decay process. At 45 degreesC and, more so, at 60degreesC, step B appears increasingly biphasic with increasing alkaline concentrations, as step B2 begins to compete with step B1 for position as the rate determining step. The trimolecular rate constant for step B1 is: 0.017 +/- 0.001, 0.0085 +/- 0.0002 and 0.0011 +/- 0.0001 dm(6) mol(-2) s(-1) at 25, 40 and 60degreesC, respectively, and the process has an activation energy of 64 kJ mol(-1). The transition from uniform kinetics, described by step B1, to mixed kinetics, described by steps B1 and B2, as the reaction temperature and alkali concentration are increased most likely occurs because (a) step B2 has a lower activation energy than B1, although it was not possible to measure the former parameter, and (b) step B2 has a lower (1st) order dependence upon [OH-] compared with that of step B1 (2nd). The bimolecular rate constant for step B2 is 0.0035 +/- 0.03 dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) at 60degreesC. A brief NMR study of the initial hydrolysis product in water, acetone and chloroform, coupled with UV/visible spectra, provides evidence that species X is a Meisenheimer complex.

Azobenzene dyes derived from various anilines and aminothiaheterocycles ate-coupled with commercially important N,N-diethyl-m-toluidine (T series) and iv,N-diethyl-m-acetylaminoaniline (A series) are positively solvatochromic. The visible spectra of 16 pairs of derivatives have been measured in up to 22 solvents, and the transition energies related to Kamlet-Taft solvent polarity parameters. In general, A-series dyes are more bathochromic than their T-series counterparts in nonpolar solvents, consistent with colour chemistry tradition, However, in more dipolar solvents the more bathochromic T-series representatives unexpectedly become more bathochromic than their A-series partners. The relative solvatochromic shifts of the A and T series are related to their respective dipole moments, These in turn are distinguished by the effect of the anilide carbonyl group dipole moment, which is antiparallel to, and thus reduces, the dipole moment of the chromogen.

Optical absorption and emission spectral studies of free and metal naphthalocyanine doped borate glass matrix are reported for the first time. Absorption spectra recorded in the UV- VIS-NIR region show the characteristic absorption bands, namely, the B-band and Q-band of the naphthalocyanine (Nc) molecule. Some of the important spectral parameters, namely, the optical absorption coefficient (α), molar extinction coefficient (ε) and absorption cross section (σa) of the principal absorption transitions are determined. Optical band gap (Eg) of the materials evaluated from the functional dependence of absorption coefficient on photon energy lies in the range 1.6 eV≤Eg≤2.1 eV. All fluorescence spectra except that of EuNc consist of an intense band in the 765 nm region corresponding to the excitation of Q-band. In EuNc the maximum fluorescence intensity band is observed at 824 nm. The intensity of the principal fluorescence band is maximum in ZnNc, whereas it is minimum in H2Nc. Radiative parameters of the principal fluorescence transitions corresponding to the Q-band excitation are also reported for the naphthalocyanine and phthalocyanine based matrices.

Optical absorption studies of free base and rare earth incorporated phthalocyanine doped borate glass matrix are reported for the first lime. The absorption spectra recorded in the UV- VIS region show two well defined absorption bands of phthalocyanine (Pc) molecule, namely the Soret band (B) and the Q band. The Q band always shows its characteristic splitting in all the doped glass matrices and the intensities of these components are found to vary from one Pc to another. Some of the important optical parameters, namely optical absorption coefficient (a), molar extinction coefficient (ε), absorption cross section (σa), oscillator strength (f), electric dipole strength (q2), absorption half bandwidth (Δλ) of the principal optical transitions have also been evaluated. Moreover, the spectral dependence of refractive index (n) and thereby the optical dielectric constant (ε) on wavelength yielded values of carrier concentration to effective mass ratio (N/m*) of the phthalocyanine molecule in the present glassy systems. Optical band gap (Eg) and width of the band tail (Et) are computed and their variations among the prepared samples are also discussed.

Wavelength dependence of saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of zinc phthalocyanine was studied using 10 Hz, 8 ns pulses from a tunable laser, in the wavelength range of 520–686 nm, which includes the rising edge of the Q band in the electronic absorption spectrum. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent and switching from RSA to SA has been observed as the excitation wavelength changes from the low absorption window region to higher absorption regime near the Q band. The SA again changes back to RSA when we further move over to the infrared region. Values of the imaginary part of third order susceptibility are calculated for various wavelengths in this range. This study is important in identifying the spectral range over which the nonlinear material acts as RSA based optical limiter.

Due to the great versatility of the properties of polymer thin films, special interest has been taken in recent years on their preparation and electrical properties. The present thesis is entirely devoted to the study of the formation, structure and electrical properties of plasma» polymerised polyacrylonitrile (PAN) thin films. Eventhough the studies are confined to a single polymer film, the results in general are applicable to similar polar polymer films.
