On the basis of N(1s) core-level spectroscopic studies, it is found that nitrogen interacts with multimolecular films of C60. More interestingly, mass spectrometric studies show that contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of N2 or NH3 yields nitrogenous products tentatively assigned to species such as C70N2, C59N6, C59N4, and C59N2 involving addition of or substitution by nitrogen along with the species due to C2 and C4 losses.

An experimental setup using radiative heating has been used to understand the thermo-physical phenomena and chemical transformations inside acoustically levitated cerium nitrate precursor droplets. In this transformation process, through infrared thermography and high speed imaging, events such as vaporization, precipitation and chemical reaction have been recorded at high temporal resolution, leading to nanoceria formation with a porous morphology. The cerium nitrate droplet undergoes phase and shape changes throughout the vaporization process. Four distinct stages were delineated during the entire vaporization process namely pure evaporation, evaporation with precipitate formation, chemical reaction with phase change and formation of final porous precipitate. The composition was examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy that revealed nanostructures and confirmed highly porous morphology with trapped gas pockets. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high speed imaging of the final precipitate revealed the presence of trapped gases in the form of bubbles. TEM also showed the presence of nanoceria crystalline structures at 70 degrees C. The current study also looked into the effect of different heating powers on the process. At higher power, each phase is sustained for smaller duration and higher maximum temperature. In addition, the porosity of the final precipitate increased with power. A non-dimensional time scale is proposed to correlate the effect of laser intensity and vaporization rate of the solvent (water). The effect of acoustic levitation was also studied. Due to acoustic streaming, the solute selectively gets transported to the bottom portion of the droplet due to strong circulation, providing it rigidity and allows it become bowl shaped. We study the vaporization and precipitation dynamics of a nanosilica encapsulated water droplet by levitating it acoustically and heating it with a CO2 laser. For all concentrations, we observe three phases: solvent evaporation, surface agglomeration, and precipitation leading to bowl or ring shaped structures. At higher concentrations, ring reorientation and rotation are seen consistently. The surface temperature from an infrared camera is seen to be dependent on the final geometrical shape of the droplet and its rotation induced by the acoustic field of the levitator. With nonuniform particle distribution, these structures can experience rupture which modifies the droplet rotational speed. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3493178]

By carrying out contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of Fe(CO)5, an iron-adduct with C60 has been obtained. The adduct has been characterized by various techniques including mass spectrometry, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and Fe K-EXAFS. Properties of this adduct are compared with those of an adduct prepared by solution method where Fe is clearly outside the cage. Results suggest that FeC60 obtained from the gas phase reaction has the Fe atom in the cage.

Hydrolytic polymerization of caprolactam to Nylon 6 in a semibatch reactor is carried out by heating a mixture of water and caprolactam. Evaporation of volatiles caused by heating results in a pressure build-up. After the pressure reaches a predetermined value, vapors are vented to keep the pressure constant for some time, and thereafter, to lower the pressure to a value slightly above atmospheric in a preprogrammed manner. The characteristics of the polymer are determined by the chemical reactions and the vaporization of water and caprolactam. The semibatch operation has been simulated and the predictions have been compared with industria data. The observed temperature and pressure histories were predicted with a fair degree of accuracy. It was found that the predictions of the degree of polymerization however are sensitive to the vapor-liquid equilibrium relations. A comparison with an earlier model, which neglected mass transfer resistance, indicates that simulation using the VLE data of Giori and Hayes and accounting for mass transfer resistance is more reliable.

Thin foils of copper, silver and gold were equilibrated with tetragonal GeO2 under controlled View the MathML source gas streams at 1000 K. The equilibrium concentration of germanium in the foils was determined by the X-ray fluorescence technique. The standard free energy of formation of tetragonal GeO2 was measured by a solid oxide galvanic cell. The chemical potential of germanium calculated from the experimental data and the free energies of formation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide was found to decrease in the sequence Ag + Ge > Au + Ge > Cu + Ge. The more negative value for the chemical potential of germanium in solid copper, compared to that in solid gold, cannot be explained in terms of the strain energy factor, electro-negativity differences or the vaporization energies of the solvent, and suggests that the d band and its hybridization with s electrons are an important factor in determining the absolute values for the chemical potential in dilute solutions. However, the variation of the chemical potential with solute concentration can be correlated to the concentration of s and p electrons in the outer shell.

The vapor pressure of pure liquid indium, and the sum of pressures of (In) and (In2O) species over the condensed phase mixture {In} + , contained in a silica vessel, have been measured by Knudsen effusion and Langmuir free vaporization methods in the temperatue range 600 to 950°C. Mass spectrometric studies reported in the literature show that (In) and (In2O) are the important species in the vapor phase over the {In} + ; mixture. The vapor pressure of (In2O) corresponding to the reaction, deduced from the present measurements is given by the equation, The “apparent evaporation coefficient” for the condensed phase mixture is approximately 0.8. The energy for the dissociation (In2O) molecule into atoms calculated from the above equation is D°0 = 180.0 (± 1.0) kcal mol−1.

The solubility limit of oxygen in liquid antimony has been measured by a novel isopiestic technique in the temperature range 995--1175 deg K. The results can be expressed by the equation log c = --5500/T + 3.754 ( plus/minus 0.04) with c in at.% O and T in deg K. The oxygen potential over Sb + O alloys equilibrium with Sb2O3 has been measured by a solid state cell using a fully stabilized CaO.ZrO2 electrolyte. The cell was designed to contain the Sb + Sb2O3 mixture in a closed volume, that the vaporization of the oxide can be minimized and true equilibrium attained. The Gibbs free energy of the reaction 2 Sb(s) + 3/2 O2 = Sb2O3(s) is Delta G deg = --719560 + 274.51 T( plus/minus 500) and Sb(l) + 3/2 O2 = Sb2O3(l), Delta G deg = --704711 + ( plus/minus 500) ( Delta G deg in J/mole, T in deg K). The combination of these results with Sieverts' law yields the standard free energy of solution of oxygen in liquid antimony according to the reaction 1/2 O2 = \O\Sb,at.% as Delta G deg = --129620 + 14.23 T ( plus/minus 950). The standard enthalopy and entropy of the solution of oxygen in Sb are compared with values for other metal- oyxgen systems, and with the standard enthalpies of formation of corresponding oxides. The resulting correlations permit the estimation of the standard free energy of solution of oxygen in pure metals for which experimental information is lacking. 24 ref.--AA

The standard Gibbs energy of formation of ReO2 in the temperature range from 900 to 1200 K has been determined with high precision using a novel apparatus incorporating a buffer electrode between reference and working electrodes. The role of the buffer electrode was to absorb the electrochemical flux of oxygen through the solid electrolyte from the electrode with higher oxygen chemical potential to the electrode with lower oxygen potential. It prevented the polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. The Re+ReO2 working electrode was placed in a closed stabilized-zirconia crucible to prevent continuous vaporization of Re2O7 at high temperatures. The standard Gibbs energy of the formation of ReO2 can be represented by the equation View the MathML source Accurate values of low and high temperature heat capacity of ReO2 are available in the literature. The thermal data are coupled with the standard Gibbs energy of formation, obtained in this study, to evaluate the standard enthalpy of formation of ReO2 at 298.15 K by the ‘third law’ method. The value of standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K is: View the MathML source(ReO2)/kJ mol−1=−445.1 (±0.2). The uncertainty estimate includes both random (2σ) and systematic errors.

We study the thermal effects that lead to instability and break up in acoustically levitated vaporizing fuel droplets. For selective liquids, atomization occurs at the droplet equator under external heating. Short wavelength [Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH)] instability for diesel and bio-diesel droplets triggers this secondary atomization. Vapor pressure, latent heat, and specific heat govern the vaporization rate and temperature history, which affect the surface tension gradient and gas phase density, ultimately dictating the onset of KH instability. We develop a criterion based on Weber number to define a condition for the inception of secondary atomization. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3680257]

Preferential accumulation and agglomeration kinetics of nanoparticles suspended in an acoustically levitated water droplet under radiative heating has been studied. Particle image velocimetry performed to map the internal flow field shows a single cell recirculation with increasing strength for decreasing viscosities. Infrared thermography and high speed imaging show details of the heating process for various concentrations of nanosilica droplets. Initial stage of heating is marked by fast vaporization of liquid and sharp temperature rise. Following this stage, aggregation of nanoparticles is seen resulting in various structure formations. At low concentrations, a bowl structure of the droplet is dominant, maintained at a constant temperature. At high concentrations, viscosity of the solution increases, leading to rotation about the levitator axis due to the dominance of centrifugal motion. Such complex fluid motion inside the droplet due to acoustic streaming eventually results in the formation of a ring structure. This horizontal ring eventually reorients itself due to an imbalance of acoustic forces on the ring, exposing larger area for laser absorption and subsequent sharp temperature rise.

There exists a minimum in the Waring function, psi(T) = -d(ln p)/d(1/T), and in the Riedel function, alpha(T) = d(ln p)/d(In T), in the liquid-vapor coexistence curve for most fluids. By analyzing National Institute of Standards and Technology data for the molar enthalpy of vaporization and the compressibility variation at the liquid-vapor phase change of 105 fluids, we find that the temperatures of these minima are linearly correlated with the critical temperature, T-c. Using reduced coordinates, we also demonstrate that the minima are well-correlated with the acentric factor. These correlations are used for testing four well-known vapor pressure equations in the Pitzer corresponding states scheme.

The velocity scale inside an acoustically levitated droplet depends on the levitator and liquid properties. Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV), detailed velocity measurements have been made in a levitated droplet of different diameters and viscosity. The maximum velocity and rotation are normalized using frequency and amplitude of acoustic levitator, and droplet viscosity. The non-dimensional data are fitted for micrometer- and millimeter-sized droplets levitated in different levitators for different viscosity fluids. It is also shown that the rotational speed of nanosilica droplets at an advanced stage of vaporization compares well with that predicted by exponentially fitted parameters. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V.
