Hydrogen Vanadate as an Effective Stabilizer of Pd Nanocatalysts for Formic Acid Electroxidation

In this paper, a simple chemical reduction route is discussed that results in small size, uniform dispersion of Pd nanoparticles supported on carbon black. HVO42-, the tridentate oxoanion with its O-O distance of 2.76 angstrom, closely matching with the Pd-Pd distance (2.75 angstrom), is expected to be an effective stabilizer for Pd according to the lattice size-matching binding model (Finke, R. G.; Ozkar, S. Coord. Chem. Rev. 2004, 248, 135). Because it has never been tested, HVO42- is exploited and found to be a very simple and effective stabilizer.

Hot-corrosion behaviors of overlay-clad yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings in contact with vanadate-sulfate salts

A dense clad overlay with chemical inertness was achieved on top of the plasma-sprayed YSZ thermal barrier coatings by laser in order to protect them from hot-corrosion attack. The Al2O3-clad YSZ coating exhibited good hot-corrosion behavior in contact with salt mixture of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) for a longtime of 100 h at 1173 K. The LaPO4-clad YSZ coating showed corrosion resistance inferior to the Al2O3-clad one. Yttria was leached from YSZ by reaction between Y2O3 and V2O5, which caused progressive destabilization transformation of YSZ from tetragonal (t) to monoclinic (m) phase. The chemical inertness of the clad layers and the restrained infiltration of the molten corrosive salts by the dense clad layers were primary contributions to improvement of the hot-corrosion resistances.

A novel 2D arsenic vanadate network grafted with a transition metal complex: [Cu(phen)][(VV4As2O19)-V-IV-As-V]center dot 0.5H(2)O

A novel organic-inorganic hybrid compound [Cu(phen)](2)[(VV4As2O19)-V-IV-As-V-O-V].0.5H(2)O 1 has been hydrothermally synthesized. Its structure, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, exhibits an unusual two-dimensional arsenic vanadate layered network grafted with the [Cu(phen)](2+) complex. The chelating phen ligands project perpendicularly beyond the inorganic layer. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that both ferro- and antiferro-magnetic interactions exist in 1.

Homologous size-extension of hybrid vanadate capsules – solid state structures, solution stability and surface deposition

The dimensions and cavity sizes of the molecular capsules with the general formula [V₁₀O₁₈L₄]¹⁰⁻ can be controlled modularly through the nature of the bifunctional, rigid organophosphonate ligands L¹ and L² (L¹ = bis(4-phosphonatophenyl)ethyne and L² = bis(4-phosphonatophenyl)butadiyne); the solution stability of the molecular entities as demonstrated by ESI-MS studies permits their assembly on the Au(111) surface on a sub-monolayer scale giving rise to a 2D supramolecular structure that is comparable to the packing arrangements of the capsules in the crystal structures.

Activation of MAP kinase by insulin and vanadate in adipocytes from young and old rats

Vanadate has insulin-like effects in adipocytes without stimulating insulin receptor kinase activity. However, it activates IRS-1 associated PI 3-kinase, suggesting that it mimics insulin effects by stimulating signaling elements downstream of PI 3-kinase. Here we analysed the stimulation of MAPK by insulin and vanadate and observed that both elicit a rapid 3.5–4 fold activation which is abolished by wortmannin and PD98059. Simultaneous addition of insulin and vanadate does not result in an additive effect neither on MAPK nor in MEK. Whereas insulin action is transient, vanadate stimulation lasts up to 20 min. In insulin-resistant adipocytes from old rats, insulin stimulates poorly MAPK, whereas a normal activation is achieved with vanadate. We conclude that: (a) insulin and vanadate use a common signaling pathway from PI 3-kinase to MEK and MAPK; (b) vanadate but not insulin, elicits a sustained activation of both enzymes; (c) this pathway is functional in old rat adipocytes.
